The Lass Word: Hafley's Big Audition
General managers will be taking notes.
By KenLass

Saturday night’s playoff game between the Packers and the Bears promises to be another memorable addition to the incredible rivalry between two of the most famous franchises in pro football history. But for Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, it could be much more than that. It could be the final springboard he needs to nail down a head coaching job in the NFL, something he admits he desires. “Would one day I like to be a head coach again? Absolutely, for sure” Hafley is quoted by Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press Gazette.
There are several reports that Hafley will receive multiple interview requests from among the eight teams currently seeking a new head coach. It’s easy to see why. In 2024, Hafley turned a mediocre unit into a top ten defense, ranking sixth in points allowed, and fifth in yards allowed. Then, bouyed by the last minute acquisition of Micah Parsons, Hafley fielded an even more impressive line-up this season. The Packers’ defense held eight of its first eleven opponents to 20 points or less. Hafley was being touted as perhaps the best DC in the league.
Then Week 15 happened. Parsons blew out his knee on a non-contact cut against the Denver Broncos. Combined with the loss of Devonte Wyatt, the team’s best run stopper, the defense collapsed, yielding 34 points and allowing the Broncos to come back from a nine point second half deficit to win the game. In week 16, the defense played valiantly for three and a half quarters against the Bears. But the unit couldn’t hold a ten point lead with five minutes left to play. The game is mostly remembered for Romeo Doubs’ mishandling of an onside kick. But it was Hafley’s defense that failed to prevent a game tying touchdown at the end of regulation, and a game winning score in overtime.
Then the most disturbing game of all in Week 17. Hafley’s defense displayed a shocking lack of effort and toughness against a Ravens team which steamrolled them for an embarrassing 307 rushing yards, rolling up 41 points in the process. That three game skid could well have given other NFL teams pause as to whether Hafley should still be on their head coach search list. There was a measure of redemption in the Week 18 finale, as Hafley led a unit of mostly subs to a respectable performance in a loss to the Vikings, who played starters.
So where does that leave the second year DC in the eyes of head-coachless teams? It’s hard to say, because NFL rules don’t allow assistants to interview for top jobs until after the wild card round of the playoffs. Hafley’s numbers weren’t elite this season, but were still good. The Packers finished eleventh in points allowed, and twelfth in yards allowed. (Pro Football Reference) The unit struggled to force turnovers, and had a nasty tendency to play its worst football at the end of games.
Which makes Saturday’s post season match-up with the Bears his final audition. Hafley is probably on many lists of head coaching candidates, but perhaps not at the top of those lists. A big shutdown performance by the Green Bay defense, resulting in a wild card victory, would likely get Hafley’s phone ringing. He is affable and good at the podium. His players like him, and he has been a head coach at the college level.
When all is said and done, my guess is that Hafley will end up returning to Green Bay. There are a couple of factors working against him. One is the trend of hiring head coaches from the offensive side of the ball. Most of the teams hiring want, and need, a shot of adrenalin from an offensive mind. The other factor is that there are other defensive assistants with higher profiles also expected to get attention, including at least three with prior NFL head coach experience. John Harbaugh, Robert Saleh, and Vic Fangio are likely to be on lists as well.
For Packers fans, this is a bit of a win-win situation, at least in the short term. If Hafley becomes a post season hero, it likely means Green Bay has had playoff success. If the Packers are a bust, the chances of his returning next year increase.
For his part, the 46 year old New Jersey native is trying to stay focused on the task at hand. “Hearing my name out there, it’s obviously extremely flattering and very humbling,” he said. “I think when you work for an organization like the Packers and have a head coach like Matt, and players like we do and a defensive staff like we do, I’m just honored to be in those. I think right now with all that stuff, it can be a distraction. So I’m trying to lock in on these playoffs and do the best that we can, and then whenever that time comes, we’ll figure it out and go from there.”
The time comes immediately after Saturday night’s game. Let’s hope his resume’ is one game stronger by that point.

My guess is it's a year too soon for Hafley. They say twice is a coincidence, three times a trend. If Hafley can put up a solid unit in year three, he'll be able to cherry pick where he wants to go sit in the big chair.
Of course, there's always the 'strike while the iron's hot' factor for him to consider as well. But Jeff, if Tennessee offers you the HC job, don't walk away from it, run!

I agree that the recent trend for HC’s is to come from the offensive side of the ball. So when the time does come, it’ll be important for JH to have connections with a coach with a rep for being good at developing young QB’s. For selfish, GB reasons, I hope none of those guys want to work with Jeff. 😂🏈

Hafley has worked for the 49'ers as a DB coach and could likely access their insider knowledge re: best OC's

So as GB fans, why would we want that?

Exactly why I say if push comes to shove, make Hafley the new HC if that's the only way to keep him. Offer OC to MLF

Jeff has done a good job given the resources that he had. When you listen to him he presents well and is a great communicator. I can see him getting a gig at the end of this year. It will be a big loss as he appears to be the best coach we have. The loss will be followed by the difficulty of luring a top coach to fill his shoes. The good DCs may assess their chances of success without a decent D-line and weak secondary and stay away. It'll be a big off season for the front office and coach staff if we want to improve this team.

"I can see him getting a gig at the end of this year. "
His college experience as a HC gives him some camera presence. He's likely going to interview very well. The number of fired HC candidates already circulating through the interview process will make it challenging, though.
"The good DCs may assess their chances of success without a decent D-line and weak secondary and stay away. It'll be a big off season for the front office and coach staff if we want to improve this team. "
I dunno. This defense played pretty well until injuries took a couple key pieces out of the equation. They've added some beef back and they'll get just about everyone back in 2026. If you have HC aspirations, you have to put together a resume to prove you belong in the conversation, and the Packers profile as a playoff team in 2026, too. Getting to work with Micah Parsons will be enticing. If anything, I'd argue that the swirling winds around LaF might be more of a deterrent.
There are going to be 8 new staffs put together in the league (plus other changes to fill vacancies)--competition for coaches will be fierce. If Hafley goes and LaF remains, I wouldn't be surprised to see Covington promoted to DC.

Most Disturbing game vs Ravens ( Ken L ) so true it was disturbing, and a set-back for Hafley not that it was all his fault. I agree with the post that says Hafley needs at least another year he is not ready.

The emergence of Harbaugh's availability has placed him in the #1 spot for the most desirable team-the Giants, but Harbaugh has many options and may prefer Miami? Harbaugh may prefer having more input into the Miami GM choice whereas NY has a less popular GM in place. Hafley is a #2 for the Giants. He checks all the boxes. Apparently, the owner, Mara, and many of the Giant's staff are connected to Boston College.

The Packers still have cache and should avoid 'cheaping out' by promoting from within. Yes, Ansley and Covington are considered very good but I bet (hope?) the FO would spend $$$ on a Hafley-esque DC, they have to put effort into the search. I would scour the successful college staffs for up-and-comers as well.

Not trying to be 'that guy', just offering up a clarification for future use.
The word I think you wanted was 'cachet', which is the state of being desired or wanted. 'Cache' is a hiding place for something valuable for future use.
Although if you were using it in the latter sense as to Hafley's value to the Packers, that would be understandable.

If Hafley goes the Packers may need to promote from within. Incoming coaches usually look for team with early round draft picks and cap space to bring FAs who can help them build their unit quickly. The Packers have neither as of this point for 2026.
The same is true for HCs which is why I think it is unlikely that the Packers will make a move on MLF, unfortunately.
For now Beat the Bears and let's go from there. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

There are many brilliant, college-level or promising defensive minds on the staffs of existing teams who would relish an opportunity w/o requiring a big pay day. Sometimes GB doesn't put in the effort, IMO.

If Hafley goes - and Morris is still available - time to get him. A lot of the good teams have an ex Head Coach as their DC - look at KC, Minnie , Saleh is back with the 49ers. Not the time to be dicking around with a wannabe HC- it is time to take advantage of Parsons and Love in his prime.

January 09, 2026 at 08:40 am
I don't see Fangio or Saleh ahead of Hafley in the pecking order. Fangio is on the old side an wasn't very good at all as a head coahc. Saleh D's this year wasn't very good at all. I know he had a lot of injuries but his time with the Jets wasn't great and he didn't have a good year. He has a name and will get interviews because he is a minority coach but I don't see him getting a job this time around.
Every one thinks Harbaugh will just get his pick of the jobs but I don't think it will be that easy. Sure he did well with the Ravens but 1 Super Bowl in 18 years and lots of playoff woes with Lamar will give some owners and GM pause. He has had a rotating door at OC almost the full time he was there and the team has fallen short which is why he is looking for work. I see Packer fans clamor for him but the same people that want MLF fired would have wanted Harbaugh fired if they where Raven's fans.
I would put Hafley ahead a lot of the more known names. Owners and GMs seem more willingly to hire a younger unproven coach with the success of guys like McDonald and Coen. He might not be who the media is fawning over but I do think he gets serious consideration.

I agree. I would choose Hafley over Harbaugh. Hafley is a culture-changer and the Giant's main need is Defensive revitalization.

SicSemperTyrannis
January 09, 2026 at 11:17 am
While I don't support the idea outright, if Hafley is actually offered a job as HC and ready to leave GB to accept it, I 100% would prefer to see Hafley retained which would require making him our new HC as I understand league rules.
Make that 1000%
I think he's the best coach we've got. Do I know for a fact that he'd make a good HC? No I do not. It very much seems like everyone on his side of the ball LOVES playing for him, and he's smart enough to recognize what he's good at vs what he can't do well. I have 0 (zero) doubt that he would do his level best to accumulate a talented offensive coaching staff, and personally I'm willing to trust him with that whereas I'm really not interested in seeing this team without Hafley next season. Don't get me wrong I'd still watch, and I won't even predict our defense would suck; only that losing him would indeed be a huge loss. Just like you don't want to lose your best player(s).
I've said this about Hafley as soon as the possibility of him getting HC offers elsewhere came up this season, (Not last season) but I never spelled out this much detail. Hopefully we're just discussing hypotheticals here, and nothing comes of it. The "coaching carousel" probably works in our favor, IMHO.

I rarely, if ever, get into player or coach acquisitions. A little above my pay grade as a fan.
But with Sullivan in Miami, bringing in Hafley as HC and Willis as QB seems like a fairly likely scenario. Being a first time GM, surrounding himself with familiar faces could certainly be tempting.

So, if he has a good-very good Defensive showing, we more likely lose him, but if he has another poor showing Defensively, we get the privilege of keeping him. How is this a win for GB from either point of view?

I don't think it is just about one performance, that wouldn't be the best way to hire someone. You have to look at their overall body of work. I think Sunday's game has about 2% bearing on what happens with Hafley this offseason.

In a scenario where the Packers lose to the Bears but play well on defense in the game.. and Hafley gets hired away. Then how tempting would it be for a new team president to flip the entire staff?
GregC
January 09, 2026 at 10:27 am
Maybe if a really good defensive coach was available to become a head coach. But I don't see any obvious candidates. The Falcons and Cardinals just fired head coaches who specialize in defense, but I doubt that they will be hot commodities as head coaching candidates. They could get consideration as Hafley replacements, though.

Hafley has already shown enough capability; this game is not that pivotal. Most NFL decision-makers know he is dealing with a bare-bones CB-room (Diggs?) and a weak D-L w/o Parsons.
He has had remarkable success with Willams, MacKinney, Cooper and others.
TarynsEyes
January 09, 2026 at 11:09 am
Yeah, sure, but teams will need to know what he does with bare-bones defense because it will happen to them all to some degree. Near all can be great with great players, but what are you when the cubbard gets bare.
