Packers release RB Darrin Hall

-- The Green Bay Packers trimmed down their roster on Saturday, announcing the release of running back Darrin Hall.

Hall, who was claimed off of waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals in July shortly after the start of training camp after injuries clobbered the Packers' backfield, played in all three preseason games. He accounted for 10 carries that registered 39 yards, with 31 of them coming on seven carries against the Baltimore Ravens.

This leaves Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Dexter Williams, Tra Carson and Keith Ford as the Packers' running backs at the moment, with the unknown variable being how many they'll carry into the regular season. Jones is now healthy and would've played Thursday night in Winnipeg had it not been for the disastrous field conditions that prompted head coach Matt LaFleur to pull his starters at the last minute.

According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, general manager Brian Gutekunst has been calling teams around the league in search of another running back to add to his roster via trade.

Jones, Williams, Vitale , and Carson, on the gameday roster. One more inactive and one on the PS. Williams and Bohanon?

Williams has more upside probably.

Bohanon is not PS eligible.

Carson looks to me like the classic around player who is just not quite good enough to succeed in any aspect in the NFL except perhaps as a blocker. I would rather keep Johnson or Bohanan: they are much better blockers and probably would get about the same YPC and in the passing game may offer a little more.

"Gutekunst has been calling teams around the league in search of another running back to add to his roster via trade"

So what's going on with Green Bay's running backs? Why is Gutekunst trying to get another one in a trade? No faith in Jones, J. Williams or D. Williams?

D Williams isn’t ready. Carson looks like JAG.

Methinks Gute makes waiver claims on a few RBs after final cuts...........

I have thought all preseason that GB would go with 4 RBs and 1 FB on the 53 man roster due to the importance of the running game in this offense. With the injury history of Jones, the inconsistency from rookie D. Williams, and the lack of pop from any of the other RBs on the roster, that the 4th RB was not on GB's roster yet. Gutey seems to see things the same way.

Agree. D Williams has a long way to go. Maybe Tre Carson, but he hasn’t been special at all. I think Gute needs to find an experienced back with a little still left in The tank. Not an easy task, but at waiver time it might be easier. Or if he can trade Josh Jones, who knows.

Big IF...but IF Jones and Williams are able to stay healthy the Packer running game should be very productive this season to support Rodgers in sustaining drives. Rodgers will need to defer to their success however and not audible to passing plays too often when the running game starts to dominate.

We may have missed out on a 6th round rb out of Utah named Darwin Thompson. He is lighting it up for KC in camp and pre-season. He was available when we selected Dexter Williams.

He could make a deal for LB Kiko Alonzo, it sounds like the 'Fins might let him go.
