Packers Practice Roundup - July 23, 2024

The Packers held another non-padded practice on Tuesday, though this day featured a lot of rain.  Per Ryan Wood: It is currently build-an-ark raining at practice. The team is remaining outside. For now.  [This photo from Matt Schneidman will give you an idea of how much rain there was - it was described as a monsoon.  [Okay, this video from Wes Hodkiewicz has to be included as well.  TGR]

NOT PRACTICING:

Jordan Love (contract holdout but Love is attending today's practice), Marshawn Lloyd (hip), Corey Ballentine and Caleb Jones (hamstrings), Reed (toe), Donovan Jennings (knee), Kitan Olapado (toe), and Tucker Kraft (pec).  Zach Tom still only doing individual work.  TE Tyler Davis getting some work after being solely in the rehab group during OTAs and minicamp.  Gutekunst said that he expected Olapado to return soon and that the team was close to reaching an extension with Love, and Jayden Reed should not be out too much longer.  Per Tom Silverstein, LaFleur said he didn't think rookie RB MarShawn Lloyd (hip) would be out too long. He said probably would miss the next couple of days.

The Packers do not have to fine QB Jordan Love $50,000 (per day) because he reported to camp, two sources said. The NFL requires teams to fine players who hold out, but since Love is with the team it's up to the Packers to decide. They aren't going to fine him.  Silverstein

PERSONNEL:

The Packers recently waived hotshot long snapper Peter Bowden to make room to sign former fourth-round QB Jacob Eason, who is on his fourth season since entering the league in 2021.  It appears that the Packers decided they could not wait for Love to return as they needed a third QB to throw passes to the teams' 12 wide receivers.

OFFENSE:

Packers starting OL in walkthroughs: Walker - Jenkins - Myers - Rhyan - Tom.  Per Matt, seems like Elgton working at center yesterday was more cross training and trying to limit some of Josh’s snaps on day one. (Herman)

AJ Dillon just had a run up the middle and he had the most burst/acceleration I’ve ever seen from him. Great run. (Herman)  MLF waxed enthusiastically about Dillon after the practice.  (Herman)  [LaFleur said Dillon was faster and had better burst/acceleration today than at any time in the past.  Apparently Dillon came in absolutely ripped.  TGR]

Grant DuBose with a good grab across the middle, ball was a tick behind him from Pratt but plucked it.  Hodkiewicz

DEFENSE:

Rashan all over a Jacobs run Rashan is so damn violent at the point of attack. No idea how Rasheed’s just contained him. Rashan & Preston force a throw away. This DL has been relentless. Offensive line has been a struggle.  2) Andre Dillard has no shot at blocking Rashan Gary. Just a massive mismatch. Gary with another “sack” And Rashan Gary follows it up with another sack. Just unstoppable.  3) Enagbare sack #3. Been a tough start to camp for Dillard.  [That is, Dillard gave up two or three sacks in today's practice.  Enagbare also had 3 sacks today and another sack yesterday, but I can't tell who gave them up.  Herman said Tenuta and Dillard had really tough days.  Gary had three total sacks today. TGR]

Rashan Gary asked if he’s ever had three sacks in four plays before. Like he did in practice today. “Probably.” Have to admire the honesty.  Wood

LaFleur said the operations were clean with the quarterbacks on the first day without Love. He said the defensive line had its way with the offensive line and that affected QB play.  Silverstein

Edgerrin Cooper just flew in like a missile for a diving pass breakup. Awesome play by the rookie.  Herman  2 plays where you see Cooper’s explosiveness: identifies dump off to RB and flies into backfield. Breaks on pass over middle for PBU.  Bretl

Stokes the starting CB opposite Jaire.  2) Valentines second pbu of the day. He’s off to a very nice start to camp.  Herman [Yet, Stokes is still getting the starts over Valentine.  TGR]  Hell of a cover deep from Carrington Valentine against Romeo Doubs, breaking up a jump ball. And Valentine let Doubs hear it. Don’t count out last year’s seventh-round pick for a potential starting job.  Wood

AJJ now picks Clifford.  Evan Williams pick (maybe pick six) to start next team period Clifford at QB.  (Herman)  [That is two picks on Clifford today - it was raining hard but still.  Also, yesterday it was McKinney and Bullard but today it was McKinney and Evan Williams with the start. TGR]  Javon Bullard was asked yesterday how comfortable he is in Packers D. Rookie safety started on Day 1. “I ain’t gonna lie, I don’t even like the word ‘comfortable.’ No disrespect, but I don’t really like that word, especially in this profession because the second you get comfortable, somebody’s got your job. And I don’t even have a job yet.”  Schneidman  [LaFleur loved it when he heard what Bullard said.  TGR]

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Carlson 3/3 (now 6/6 on the day). Joseph 3/3 (now 5/6 on the day). So through 2 days Carlson 6/6 Joseph 5/6 Turner 4/6.  Herman

MISCELLANEOUS:

Push-ups for the offense. Someone says, “Hey do the push-ups, Love!”  Schneidman

Remember 2022 when too many people got excited over the fast start by the defense but it turned out the offense was actually just so-so and the defense was nothing to write home about?

I am more interested in various camp battles. Bullard seemed fine yesterday and Evan Williams looked good today. Herman said he was a very active communicator on the field and of course he had an interception today. I imagine the Packers will give Olapado a good look when he gets healthy.

Valentine gets favorable comments noting excellent coverage. Stokes only gets mentions because he is starting. Time will tell there.

Cooper flashed athleticism. That is good, but we know that instincts and recognition play a huge role in the development of ILBs.

So love is at the point where he doesn't need to practice? What will he be learning on the bench? How to drink water? Or learning how to be a professional holdout? Very disappointing.

Let me try to understand...you expect Love to practice in shorts, in a rain downpour, while he is finalizing a once in a lifetime compensation package, and risk an injury?

Apologize for disappointing you, but I have no understanding of that view. Nor do the Packers.

You do understand if he did practice and suffered a serious injury, he would be negotiating a very different, less lucrative contract, right? And it would likely be delayed for months. If I were Love, I would do the very same thing. I think you would too, wouldn't you?

He's not holding out to demand a new K...he's holding "in" while the mutually agreed new deal is being finalized.

Great comment by Bullard. He just earned 800lbs of respect.

That what you get when you bring character into the equation when you draft players
