The Packers Renegotiate Royce Newman's Contract

Royce Newman's 2024 base salary was automatically increased to $3.116M because he earned the Proven Performance Enhancer benefit mandated by the CBA. That meant his cap number for 2024 would be $3.241M ($3.116M base plus the remaining signing bonus proration of $124,834). The Packers have reduced his pay and cap number recently.
Newman's base salary will be reduced to $1.125M, a reduction of $1.866M, but he gets a Game-Active bonus of $1M. Since Newman was active for 17 games in 2023, his new cap number will be $2.375, a reduction of just $866,000. Frankly, I had hoped for more relief.
Newman started two games last year (183 snaps), getting the rest of his snaps (73) on special teams as part of the field goal and extra point teams. Even if the Packers found another lineman to take those special teams snaps, the Packers apparent fascination for Newman suggests that he is in the running for being active on game days as the seventh offensive linemen, so right now it seems quite possible he will again be active for all 17 games. Still, there is a lot of training camp left, and the Packers added OTs Jordan Morgan, Travis Glover, and Donovan Jennings, plus OC Jacob Monk, so the top seven remains to be seen.
I think Newman has a pretty competent agent.

It occurs to me that Luke Tenuta used to get special teams snaps as a protector on the field goal and extra point units. He only got 18 snaps in the last three games of 2022. As for the seventh offensive lineman, Tenuta is a candidate, along the four rookies, Telfort, Caleb Jones and someone named Lecitus Smith, a guard.

He can still be cut if the Packers are sufficiently impressed with the developmental guards on the roster.
In other news, the Packers may be donning alternative white helmets at some this season...Weird!

White helmets? Some people just hate tradition I guess.

How about just cutting the stiff? He’s becoming the Jarret Bush of the OL, the GM sees something in the guy that the rest of the world doesn’t.

At this point you might be seeing Royce Newman hang on and Andre Dillard get his walking papers. Not a good start to training camp for the project known as Andre Dillard.
