The Return of Raven Greene Gives the Packers Defense More Versatility

Go back and watch the Packers Week 1 win over the Chicago Bears last season. It was probably the best game the defense played all season with the possible exception of Week 16 against the Vikings. There was one player who was a big part of what the defense did in that game who was missing for the rest of the season: safety Raven Greene.

Greene went down with a season-ending injury in the third quarter of the Packers Week 2 win over the Vikings. The defense certainly felt his absence both when defending the pass and trying to stop the run. Before he was hurt, Greene played in roughly 77 percent of the Packers’ defensive plays despite not being listed as a starter.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine explained what Greene’s loss meant to the defense. “It was tough. He’s a versatile player who was able to do some good things for us in 2018 and it was unfortunate that in the second game, he went down with an injury. I mean he was going to be a big part of what we were doing, just kind of that hybrid linebacker/safety type. His versatility, his explosiveness, was something that we missed and we’re looking forward to being able to take advantage of it this year.”

That hybrid linebacker/safety type has been something Pettine likes to utilize because it gives him flexibility on defense and the ability to disguise coverages and to run different coverages out of similar formations. Pettine values versatility on defense in part for that reason. Greene can step into the box to help stop the run while the Pack is still using six or even seven DBs or he can help cover opposing tight ends, something that the Packers struggled to do all season in 2019.

Thus far, Pettine is pleased with what he sees from Greene in training camp. “He looks good. He’s smart, he’s tough, I mean he’s always been able to pick up stuff very quickly and we’re certainly expecting big things of Raven this year,” Pettine added.

The former undrafted free agent out of James Madison played eight games for the Packers in 2018, Pettine’s first season as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator. He was in on five total tackles, forced a fumble and recorded a sack while playing in just four percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Last year, he was on the field for 70 defensive plays in a little more than six quarters of action before the injury ended his season.

Greene is 5’11” and weighs 197 pounds. But his ability to both stuff the run when playing that hybrid position and to cover or blitz on passing plays allows Pettine the ability to play his smaller packages which feature six or seven defensive backs and still be confident that they can stop the run well enough to avoid disasters like last year’s NFC Championship Game which saw the 49ers gain 285 yards on the ground and run for four touchdowns.

Several players tried to fill Greene’s shoes over the course of the season, but none of them had the impact that Greene provided when he was in the lineup.

Head coach Matt LaFleur is eager to get Greene back in the lineup this season. “Raven is a very versatile player,” LaFleur told reporters during a recent conference call. “Whether it’s at dime linebacker or in the safety position, we’ve got a lot of confidence in him and his ability to help communication on the back end, play his responsibilities to the best of his level. We’re really looking forward to seeing what he can put together this season.”

Backup quarterback Tim Boyle also expressed confidence in Greene. “He is a talented player, super smart, knows where to be, and is just one of those guys who has a knack for the ball,” Boyle told Packer Report last month. “He is very instinctual. Hopefully, he is back and ready to go. I think he’s going to have a big year on the defensive side.”

If Greene can stay healthy for the season, he will provide the Packers with excellent depth at safety. Between starters Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage, Greene and possibly Will Redmond and rookie seventh round pick Vernon Scott, the Packers have a talented and mostly young group at the position with a diverse skill set.

Keeping Greene healthy and available could go a long way to helping the Green Bay defense improve in 2020 and that could help the team take the next step forward in their quest for another championship.

He reminds me of the another 36 in how he can play all over the field. I hope he has a healthy season

Staying healthy is obviously a key for Raven Greene this year. He has yet to do that for a full season. Thanks for the comment.

Sucks but, as repeatedly stated, it is all about him staying healthy. He is Teeny for an ILB and not all that big for a safety. 90% of the guys he has to bring down, who are running at him with a head of steam, are as big to much bigger. Talk about guts/toughness. Gotta luv a player like that but it's going to be tough for him to stay healthy let alone playing well all banged up. I have my fingers crossed!!! The Packers are better with him as we found out last year. The key is to have someone there so the drop off isn't so dramatic as in 2019.

He's an important cog in our defense--as long as his ankles hold up and is able to play at full strength. What is our Plan B in his absence, particularly when it comes to covering TE's?

Another one that can't stay on the field, although I hear he has his strength back. Plan C?

Not sure what Plan C will be. There are several options whether it's another safety or an ILB. Let's hope Greene stays on the field. Thanks for the comment, splitpea1.

Exactly why I question if we have done enough or anything to really improve. Kirksey can be a nice player but injuries are a huge factor. Burks hasn’t shown anything in two years and might be headed to bust land. I realize Martinez was limited but..can we say the Packers are really better than last year? Heck, we might really be worse off and I really hope that is not the case.

The early looks at Kirksey are positive, but again, he has to stay on the field as does Greene. The potential is there for the defense to be better, but we have to see results. Tougher to gauge with a shorter training camp and no preseason games. The proof will be in the pudding come September. Thanks for the comment, PackfanNY.

Maybe Martin moves Burks out of the way. Could be fluid inside with two ILBs and Greene on the same sets.
The pressure is on Pettine to solidify the inside game.

That is a definite possibility. We'll see how the rest of camp plays out. Rookies are at a definite disadvantage this year. Thanks for the comment, jannesbjornson.

Tough call. Will Redmond may be called on again or Oren Burks/Ty Summers may also be possible. The Packers have a lot of questions behind Greene on the depth chart.

I agree about the potential of Greene. I sincerely hope that we have found a player to back him up, however. Perhaps Scott may be one possibility, but last year was a lesson in the need for depth in that role.

Scott has made an impression on the coaching staff early which is a good sign. Still tough to tell if he's ready to play as a rookie without a preseason and all the reduced reps during the offseason and training camp. I wonder how much we will see from rookies this year, especially early in the season. Thanks as always for the comment, Coldworld.

It would be better if one of the ILB steps up and can take a bigger role in coverage. Kirksey is an upgrade over Martinez, assuming he's on the field, but he's still not the all over coverage and sideline to sideline ILB. Burks is the best chance for that. During last year he could only bench 135 due to his pec injury. But now he's healthy can bench over 350 and has put on good weight to about 240, w/o losing his movement ability. Burks taking over at least a large part of Greene's role would make the D much better than using a Safety all the time. Greene would still have his place and a role but an ILB is what would make the D more formidable.

Keep you hopes on Burks very very low and you won´t be disappointed. He is a great athlete, than can not stay healthy, but a terrible football player that reads the play always one second late, very low football IQ a similar case to Josh Jones. The big difference is the always positive attitude from Burks.

I hope Burks can show we he can do and stay on the field this year. I also like his attitude. He had some good preseason games the last two years before he got hurt, but obviously the regular season is a different game. Why are you so skeptical about his ability to read plays and react quickly? Thanks for the commenting.

I think any of these guys who can run and have more size than a typical strong safety is what Stroh had in mind. Burks happens to be at the head of that pack right now, but I don't any of us really cares who fills that role, so long as they do it well and can stay on the field. Many poke at Burks and his size (230 lbs prior to this year) saying that's why he gets hurt, but if you look at his injuries (blew a shoulder out in warmups, tore a pec), the narrative doesn't really fit.

He didn't have a long injury history prior to joining the Packers. He has to show he can stay healthy for a season and that he is ready to contribute. I hope he can do it. Thanks for the comments, dobber.

This is Burks' big opportunity and possibly his last to claim a starting job. If he can live up to his potential, it could really help the defense. I like the kid, but he's got to say healthy and produce on the field. Thanks for the comment, Stroh.

I think Pettine wants Greene all over the formation. That 3rd safety is key to confusing QBs, I think you will see a few looks with Greene blitzing up the middle and Kirksey dropping into zone.......from what I can tell, Pettine wants to play press man, but also a match zone, it is kinda cover 4.......kinda not......hence, SO much Dime

Greene definitely gives Pettine the chance to create a bit more confusion for opposing offenses and the defense values versatility. Greene has the potential to provide that second or two of doubt that can confuse QBs or offensive coordinators. Hope he can stay healthy this year. Thanks for the comment, Bure9620.

Having Greene back will be a big plus, but the biggest question is what they will do to stop the run.

Greene can help stop the run. I think Kirksey will help as well. The Smith Brothers also need to take better angles and prevent people from getting to the edge when running. It will be a challenge, no doubt. Thanks for commenting, Lare.

Excuse me while I translate Pettine speak. 'Man I hate playing the 3-4. Love me some 3-5 with Raven, protects my backside and I can blitz the Bros all day...' Last year without Greene, the Packers defensive 'Mad Man' went further against the grain with 2-6 daring teams to run with dual DB slots in the latter half of the season. Pettine only plays one true ILB, he seems to prefer hybrid types at LB and DE, I could see Burks and Greene and Kirksey lining up LB with Gray and Z. Smith at DE in some weird 4-3 breaking into some kind of Caperish NASCAR package before the snap. While it may drive some a bit nuts, Pettine is truly different in his conception of the modern NFL defense, especially with the physical dimensions of his players. What is fascinating is while GM Gute has total buy in to Pettine's theory of defense, head coach MLF has not yet bought in. Should be a fun season...for us fans...(even with the virus)

Thanks for the comment, flackcatcher. I like the analysis of Pettine and what he's trying to do, but what makes you think LaFleur hasn't bought in to his defense? Why did he bring him back then?

Gil, I believe that decision was never MLF's. That was Gute's call from day one, and Gute wanted Pettine back. If the press reports are true, then Pettine was Gute's first choice as head coach after McCarthy's firing by Murphy. Right now, Gute is the most powerful GM since the Ron Wolf era. In many respects Gute has even more power and authority than Wolf did. It is Gute who makes the final call on coaches, players and front office personal. How much input MLF gets is clearly up to Gute. It is clear that Gute treats MLF and Pettine as equals in personal and policy. If I were MLF, knowing that I have no leverage over Pettine, I be nervous too.

Let me add that there was 'tell' last season. In MLF last presser he made it very clear how unhappy he was over both the defense and the calls by Pettine during the NFC conference final. His answer to a question was 'I am going to Mark to fix the problem'. The problem of course being Pettine implied by MLF. At the time it looked like a power move by the young coach. Next day Gute had his own presser and calmly made the announcement that he was eval everyone on the coaching staff. When asked about Pettine, he openly praised Pettine for the job he did that season. Message sent. On MLF next presser he made it clear he was somewhat over emotional over the loss, and Pettine did a fine job that year. Message received.

Man, I was so disappointed when Greene was lost for the year. When they picked him up as an UDFA, I predicted in his third year he would take HaHa's starting free safety position. I thought he'd be a great interceptor, as he was in college. Turns out, he's playing more like a strong safety, but that's fine.
The Packers had a really "healthy" year last year, but they did lose a few players who might have made a big difference: Raven Greene, Lane Taylor, ESB, Sternberger, and Curtis Bolton ALL might have played significant roles.

Very true about those players who all had the potential to contribute a lot but were out. Let's hope many of them contribute this season. Injuries hit every year but we have to hope to stay relatively healthy. Thanks for the comment PackEyedOptimist.

On top of the mix is that the fifth round draft pick (Martin) has been looking good. And he has the size to stop the run if needed and play the traditional MLB role.
