Woodson Wants Extension

Charles Woodson reportedly wants a new deal.

That is according to Josina Anderson of FOX 31 of Denver:

Fox31 1st Alert Breaking News: Sources-Green Bay Packers & CB Charles Woodson, t/ 2009 DPOY, r in talks 4 new contract

The desire for new deal is there, will Green Bay Packers step up to the plate?

Hmmm. Team in a bad public relations spot gets pressured into extending star player? WHERE have I heard that before? (sigh)

I don't mind that first Tweet. The second one pisses me off.

UPDATE: A much better and more professional take is available from Brian McIntyre over at The Other 31.

I have a feeling next year will suck for the Pack if it becomes capped again.

Nah, they're handling all contracts as though there WILL be a cap next year. They poured a ton of guaranteed money into this year for Clifton, Collins, and Pickett, not to mention Tauscher.

Hold up a second, I read the opposite on PFT. It's the Packers who offered up the contract in the first place.

Amen to that. As of know it's unclear as to who made the first move. I'd wait to let the details come out during camp in the next couple of days.

As with all very talented players in their 30's,teams are in a quandry of doing the right or best thing long term.Signing a new deal is easy, not having to guarantee the bank is the problem. These players know it's the last contract, and some deserve it and some just want the cash and thats all.Woodson deserves it and a RING!!!

Being the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year, Al Harris coming of an injury and lack of depth at the position give him the leverage to pull this off.

We should offer a contract to Lebron James while we're at it. Boy TT is on fire this offseason!

How does Woodson yearly earnings rank with the other top paid CBs?

I have a feeling it may not be in line. Then again he is getting long in the tooth so to speak.

The other thing that is in the Packers favor is that he is under contract (any body know for how long?) and that the Packers are a contender. Not denying that money is important and the proper respect given, but Woodson does not have a ring.

So his current contract + ring (best chances) + his age = nothing will come of this.

Great call NY.

When's the last time you heard of an underachieving player giving $$$ back? Me either. Play out your contract, play well, you'll probably get taken care of. PERIOD. 8-)

And I'm speaking of Pro athletes in general... nobody specific. The shit just gets old. Until the Bustin Harrells of the world start giving back, I don't want to hear anything from the players. You signed a CONTRACT, man up!

dillagaf,

His current contract is 7 years $52 mil, signed through 2012. He's slated to make roughly $7.5 this year.

Clarification - $52 = MAX, that's with all the escalators and incentives. $39 on the low end. Probably on the low side if you're comparing to an Asomugha (3year $45, $28.5 guaranteed) or Revis (next deal). But the guy ain't starvin'. He can slap down $2 mil at Michigan... he'll survive for a while. PLAY BALL

Of course HE doesn't know her. But his agents, the Poston brothers, sure do.

So you're saying Woodson is omitting the thruth?

Like last year with Collins, I have no reason to not believe Woodson...

Funny you should mention Collins - because that's what makes me so sure. Alan Herman, Collins' agent, ADMITTED to me that he and Collins played good cop/bad cop two summers ago. I suspect the same thing is happening w/Woodson.

Yes, I probably worded that wrong - when Colllins' father passed away. They took "an entirely different approach" this year according to Herman.

I don't doubt that Collins' or Woodson's agents are working to get them a more lucrative contract - if the players get paid, the agents get paid.

But the players and the agents don't necessarily act the same way. In one case, the man's father had passed away. And in this case, Woodson is denying asking the Packers' for a new contract, and is in GB working, when he could be anywhere else...

Having acted in a similar environment (a case against SC Internacional by an ex-representative of Lucio, Brazil's defender, who played for Internacional a while back), I can tell that the agents act on their own a lot of times, regardless of their clients' intentions...

"Pay him. Pay that man his money!" Teddy KGB.

If anyone has earned the right to get some guaranteed cash its Woodson. A little "pay for previous play" which should inspire other players to up their game. Add two years to current contract, but front end load it with guaranteed money(signing bonus). No future ramifications if he does finally revert back to injury prone Woodson. Win/Win. Do it Mr. Ted Thompson.

Love the report by JoJo from Denver. Who? Source was definately somone that knows Charles, but Charles must not know what they are doing. AKA Someone Charles pays. So he can honestly deny it completely. Well played. Well played.

I love Woodson, but be a man and honor the contract you signed. Like others have said, when a player does great, he expects a big payday, but when one under-performs, do they give money back? Is JaMarcus Russell going to give any of his money back to Oakland?

Plus, someone said Woodson is set to make 7.25 million this year? I'm only 22 years old and I could make 7.25 million last the rest of my life. Woodson is 33 and still has money from previous contract years.

7.5 million a year at his age seems like a fair contract, he could be worth more on the open market, but you have to take into account his age.

Last year was a tremendous year for him.

On a side note the pay structure leaves a lot to be desired as a whole in the NFL. I don't have the answer, but the current system is based on your agents abilities (not the players performance).

Just look at Mathews, Brad Jones, and AJ Hawk. Mathews has a chance at another pro bowl year yet Hawk makes far more and may end up playing only half the reps. Then there is Jones who could end up putting up some great numbers and makes only a fraction of what Mathews makes.

No denying that Woodson had a stellar 2009, But at his age and this is not a knock on him, If he is signed through to 2012 you at least have to see how he performs in 2010 before you even consider a contract extension. Then again he is a star and does seem like packer people so who knows what TT will do. I would be happy either way.
