Where Will Jordan Morgan Fit in the Packers Offensive Line in 2025 and Beyond?
By GilMartin

When the Green Bay Packers selected Jordan Morgan in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, experts were divided as to where he would best fit in the NFL. He played left tackle in college and played it well. However, many scouts felt Morgan would be better suited to playing guard in the NFL because his arm length was a bit shorter than the ideal measurements for a tackle.
In his rookie season, the Packers had Morgan taking reps at both left tackle and right guard at OTAs. But the coaching staff quickly realized that his best chance of playing as a rookie would be at right guard. By training camp, Morgan was playing almost exclusively at right guard and battled with Sean Rhyan for that starting spot.
Injuries limited Morgan and he ended up as the backup at right guard. He rotated in for several series per game with Rhyan and even started one game when Josh Myers was out with an injury and Elgton Jenkins had to slide over to center.
Unfortunately, injuries ended Morgan’s season after just six games. He spent the rest of the year watching, rehabbing his injured shoulder and waiting for another chance to crack the lineup.
This year, Morgan has again been battling at both left tackle and right guard. But injuries to several offensive linemen impacted where Morgan has lined up in training camp and during the preseason.
Starting left tackle Rasheed Walker missed some time due to a groin injury and that gave Morgan more reps at his old college position. He played well there in both preseason games. Despite the first team offense’s struggles, Morgan has not allowed a sack or a pressure in either game. He has demonstrated the footwork and technique to play tackle in the NFL and did it against the opponent’s first-string defense.
Walker has now returned to practice. The battle for the starting left tackle spot may be the most significant competition in the final week of the preseason.
But another offensive line injury has complicated things. Starting left guard Aaron Banks, who the Packers signed to a lucrative free agent deal during the offseason, has been struggling with a back injury that hasn’t fully healed. That means that Morgan has seen some time at left guard in practice recently and has acquitted himself well there when given the opportunity.
So, Matt LaFleur and the Packers coaching staff have some decisions to make both for the short term and long term. For the short term, we still don’t know if Banks will be ready to play in Week 1 when the Packers host Detroit. Since LaFleur has often said he wants the best five offensive linemen on the field, that could mean plugging Morgan in at left guard if Banks isn’t ready to play. That would create a starting offensive line of Walker at left tackle, Morgan at left guard, Jenkins at center, Rhyan at right guard and Zach Tom at right tackle.
But for the long term, the Packers need to decide if Morgan is predominantly a tackle or a guard. If he beats out Walker for the left tackle position, he will start there. If he doesn’t, when Banks is healthy, Morgan could very well serve as the first man off the bench at every position along the offensive line except center this season. LaFleur could also continue to rotate Morgan into the lineup for several series each game, possibly even at multiple positions.
Both Walker and Rhyan are entering the final year of their entry level contracts. The Packers cannot afford to give both of them big contracts to stay in Green Bay next season after paying Banks, Tom, and possibly Jenkins. Will the Packers look at Morgan as a tackle who can also play guard, or a guard who can also play tackle? Where will he compete first for a starting job next season if he doesn’t win one this year?
The key to the answer will likely be which lineup allows the Packers to get their best five offensive linemen on the field. The versatility the team loves in the linemen will certainly come into play when they make that decision. The fact that Morgan can play four of the five positions along the line will work in his favor.
Morgan has taken a step forward in his second preseason with the team. Now, we’ll find out where he plays and how big a step he’s taken when the season gets under way.

Morgan's play at LT has certainly reduced my anxiety about what we are going to do next year as Rasheed is very likely going to be playing for some other team. Hopefully we can get him on the field as a starter, but if not it is good to know that he can be the first guy off the bench should an injury occur.

Yeah. I think the plan the entire time was to keep Jenkins, extend Tom, and use Morgan to replace Walker, who would leave in FA. In the meantime, as long as Walker is playing well and people are healthy, we actually have the luxury of being able to develop a premium talent for a couple of years before he's called upon to start.

This is exactly the right answer for every player at every position regardless of draft position.

More concerning is the Banks issue with the back ... you would think the Packers would have put him through a complete physical before signing him to a huge contract? Back injuries do not coincide well with playing in the trenches...

I have no doubt they did. It’s standard practice league wide. Back injuries can occur any time. I share your concern though, both for Banks and Jenkins.

IIRC, if Banks was not that highly rated, should we have passed on him and possibly resigning Walker? Then we could have Morgan play right guard.
Just wondering if this would have been a possibility.

My guess is they wanted a G who had already stood out in the run game to address the lamentable depth of first contact for the RBs last year. That’s not really Morgan.

You put your line together from LT, which is your most important spot, to Center, your second most, and then RT. The guard spots are the #4 and #5 spots on the line, with RG being least important.
So spending a high draft pick on the least important position on offense is kind of bad business. I'm pretty sure this is falling exactly the way the team wants this right now. We can afford to develop guys like Belton and Morgan because the guys ahead of them are "good enough". When/If injuries strikes, this is what is called depth, and I'm damn glad to have it.
Next year, Day One, we know we can line up Morgan at LT, Tom at RT, Jenkins at C, and Banks and Belton at the guards. Without signing or resigning or drafting or getting anybody in Free Agency, we'll be able to put those guys on the field.

Then who would play Rhyan's RG spot in 2026? Doubt they would resign both Walker and Rhyan. I guess Belton might be a candidate, but who backs up at T, then?
I hope Banks gets healthy...but some IOL talent was needed with Jenks to C and Morgan declared a contestant for LT. Don't think Walker, if Morgan takes his spot, would be played at G. So the long term view was needing IOL depth for today, but more so next season.

Well, it's the least important place on the offense, and it's next year,
I don't think the Packers will bring back Walker or Rhyan, and both will leave in FA. We get compensation when that happens.
The people we already have under contract for 2026: Jenkins, Tom, Morgan, Belton, Banks, Glover, Monk. I'm sure we have others and they all have a year to prepare for that spot,or we could sign a FA and move some people around.
This team has remodeled the offensive line with Banks and now another FA, as well as another high draft choices in Morgan and Belton. That's a lot of addition.

Back injuries tend to be a bit spontaneous. And can be very problematic. Can be chronic, though most often they resolve but some slower than others.
If you think I have experience with them...:-((

Do you know they didn’t? I would think every player goes through rigorous health testing before being signed. And it is possible he hurt it after signing! But yeah. Amy opportunity to bash BG! 🙄

"Will the Packers look at Morgan as a tackle who can also play guard, or a guard who can also play tackle?"
Who knows? TC is over and the regular season prep begins and the OL remains unsettled. That's well, unsettling.
Maybe the Packers after rotating 6 or 7 players to be "The Best Five" weekly during the season will eventually look at Morgan as a tackle who can play tackle.

Best 5 available out there at any time. That’s all that matters. I don’t care where Morgan he or Walker is playing as long as one of them is not sitting for a lesser player because neither were adequately prepared .
I don’t know where Morgan will be next year. If Belton takes a big jump, he’s a RT. Long term that could mean Tom at LT. Alternatively, Belton moves to G and perhaps Morgan is LT. Who knows?

How will the Best 5 be determined every week...as Stenovich plans a 6/7 OL rotation during the season?
Or should they decide on the Best 5 after the 53 and practice them together all season unless someone gets injured or plays himself to the bench?

I think the plan for Belton long-term is RG, with Tackle potential if injuries strike. Gutey does not draft college Guards, and Belton's skill set would fit better there.

So Walker will get crazy money in FA and be gone. Seems like everyone expects that. So Morgan is at LT next year.
What kind of money will Rhyan command in FA? The kind the Giants paid Runyan? If so, adios!
And where does Belton fit in? Gotta expect a 2nd rounder to start sooner than later…

It's a financial decision and my guess is the FO wants Morgan.

I think injuries if there are some will have to provide the answers. Who plays well when a starter misses time? If the OL is very healthy then the Packers will have to make decisions without having new and better information. It is still better to have a healthy year, of course.
I suspect that Morgan is the best right guard on the team. Assuming Walker is the week one starting LT and Banks recovers in time to start at LG, I think Morgan is the week one RG.
If Rhyan gets significant time starting at center AND proves able, that would be interesting. Lots cheaper to re-sign Rhyan than to retain Jenkins, plus Rhyan's year one cap number can be low and fit into the window delimited by when Love's cap number explodes in 2028.

You know this better than me, TGR. Do many playoff favored NFL teams go into the regular season planning to rotate 6 to 7 OL players week to week?
Maybe some do and it works. The Packers never did it until the Runyan/Rhyan ongoing mix/match and the Nijman/Walker mix/match deep into the season.
Familiarity, communication and cohesiveness on the OL is important...is it hampered by mixing in two more OL to perfect the FCC advantage week to week?

How do the Packers resign Rhyan for less than $10M/year? I'm not seeing how we resign him for $10M/year, or even why we'd want to.
As regards lining up for the opener, the preferred lineup is Walker, Banks, Jenkins, Rhyan, Tom. Morgan is first guy off the bench. #7, #8, #9 are TBD. You'd like to give some game time to people like Belton, etc., but this is one of the most important games of the season and we should play our best. We can develop people later.

My guess would be that Morgan is the future at LT. One does not spend a premium pick on a Guard.
From Left to Right, if I had to predict, this is what the Packers' starting OL will look like in '26:
Morgan-Banks-Jenkins-Belton-Tom

Yes. You want to draft LTs there. Belichick thought he was a LT. The Packers scouting department thought he was. He's look pretty good in camp, apparently. He's our LT.
Morgan Banks Jenkins Belton Tom. These guys are all under contract for 2026 already.

That Banks back injury is pretty scary. I have a feeling Morgan is going to be starting at LG to start the year… :(
