What Can the Packers Expect from Mecole Hardman in 2025?

The Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver and return specialist Mecole Hardman this offseason. The 27-year-old Georgia alum should help the Packers on both offense and special teams. But what kind of role can we expect Hardman to have this season?

Obviously, Hardman will contribute on kick and punt returns. Last season, Hardman returned 20 punts for the Chiefs and averaged 10.2 yards per runback. For his career, he has a 9.2-yard average and has returned one punt for a touchdown.

He has been less active as a kick returner in recent seasons. In 2024, Hardman ran back only five kickoffs and averaged 26.4-yards per return. The last time he returned a significant number of kicks was his rookie year back in 2019. For his career, he averaged 23.8 yards on 45 runbacks including a 104-yard touchdown in 2019.

Keisean Nixon already indicated after the season that he didn’t want to return kicks anymore despite being named All Pro as a return specialist twice. Nixon wants to concentrate on playing cornerback. Meanwhile, Jayden Reed has been serviceable at best as a punt returner. The Packers would like Reed to concentrate on being a wide receiver where he is expected to take on an even bigger role in 2025 with Christian Watson expected to miss at least half the season as he rehabs from knee surgery.

On offense, Hardman caught 12 passes last season on 14 targets for the Chiefs. He averaged only 7.5-yards per catch.

Despite the lack of eye-popping numbers from Hardman last season, Chiefs head coach believes Hardman will find a role in the Green Bay offense in 2025. “Yeah, they will find a role for him,” Reid told reporters this week at the NFL owners meetings. “Good kid, and fast. He'll do a nice job for them.”

Speed is the key for Hardman. That’s why the Packers added him. Matt LaFleur could use Hardman in a role similar to what we saw from Tyler Ervin in 2019 and 2020 with the Packers. Ervin didn’t start, but he got about a half dozen touches per game including jet sweeps, end arounds, screen passes, and gadget plays designed specifically for him. Hardman could take on a similar role in 2025.

Defenses won’t view Hardman as a primary player they need to stop, but when he enters the lineup, defenses may be on the alert for gadget plays and packages the team runs for Hardman. That could also open up opportunities for teammates.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst admitted that because of his speed, Hardman could help the Packers in some way to offset the absence of Watson.

“We brought in Mecole and he’s got a lot of speed,” LaFleur said when asked how the Packers will try to replace Watson’s role early in the season. “Certainly, Jayden [Reed] fits that bill as well. Luke Musgrave is a guy if we can consistently keep out on the field, provides a speed element that can stretch the defense, so I think we have that ability even without Christian. Christian’s a pretty dynamic guy, there’s not many guys like him in our league, so when he’s out there it certainly changes things. Getting him healthy down the stretch will be a really important part of that, but I do think we can handle that as we are.”

Hardman will not be expected to play a major role in the offense. As of now, Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks will all start training camp ahead of him on the depth chart. Hardman may battle for a depth role with Bo Melton and Malik Heath and any other receivers the Packers add at the position in this year’s draft.

But don’t overlook Hardman. He could be a useful role player on offense while giving the team solid play as a return specialist. His role may not be big, but it can be effective and useful and give opposing defenses one more player to think about when Hardman checks into the game.

I'm pretty sure he will become WR1 by the time OTA's fire up. He will lead the league in every WR category along with breaking the all time punt and kick return yards and TD's. After the season, we will trade him for 8 first round picks and 2 picks a piece in every round thereafter. In fact, another article written about him and I will be convinced he's on a fast track to Canton. He should probably start getting fitted for his yellow jacket.

Ya and he is good at golf too and wins the masters in his free time.
My guess, he was available for a reason. If I expect little and that's all he does I won't be disappointed.
My dis appointment is, this id deja Vu all over again

CHTV has had a plethora of similar articles since Hardman was acquired. You'd think he was a major signing based on the number of articles. Truth is his contract would allow the team to cut him before the season even starts, lol.

Hardman was brought in to appease.

Much like Sammy Watkins, Devin Funchess, and Earvin.

He'll get a handful of trick plays, a handful of receptions.

He's much like Mike Daniels and Rashan Gary in the playoffs, he doesn't move the needle.

There's probably a reason the Chiefs would let him go for nothing.

The Chiefs don't exactly have a who's who at receiver.
They obviously didn't see much value in Hardman.
I would think if Mahomes valued Hardman, he'd still be a Chief.

Hardman was paid 1.125 million in 2024.
Hardman got a small raise when signing with the Packers.

Who knows, maybe the Packers can do something with him.
But i wasn't impressed with free agent signings of Funchess, and Watkins, and that hasn't changed with Hardman.

Based on his contract, about what his production suggests: a punt and possible kick returner who may get a few gadget or slot snaps on game days, if he makes the roster.

PS. Nothing has changed since the last wave of articles on Hardman, except confirmation that he’s essentially on the minimum contract allowable. That should surely have given pause for thought before penning yet another?
What do we think Malik Heath or even Julian Hicks will do? At least I’d have thought about that one.

Since I am a little concerned about the lack of competition at the returner spots I'll put my two cents in for Nohl Williams, CB California, as a day 3 player. Had 7 interceptions last year and returned kickoffs, including one for an 80 yard TD. Consensus board has him as a 5th round prospect. Average speed but strong player that will win most hand fighting battles.

Exactly. I see him going in the 4th. Ballhawk and a good return man. As they say, he is just good at football. We could use a few more like that. Not everyone has to be an all pro. Just be good at their job and contribute.

Nohl is not a great tackler technically, though very willing. He is stiff hipped and lacking elite speed: he runs the 40 in the same time as Hopper. More concerning is that he does so despite a good initial straight line burst, suggesting his long speed is lower.

I can’t argue with his ball skills/instincts, they are real, but I do doubt whether his lateral athleticism will allow them to translate. A lot of his game relies on physicality, an advantage that I don’t think he will find nearly as often in the NFL.

He might perhaps be a Hafley slot candidate if he can improve his tackling technique and possibly a future S, where his shorter arms and poor vertical won’t be such a factor while his speed will become a relative plus and his lack of lateral agility won’t be abnormal.

Finally! We are hearing something about the exciting new Packer!

Hardman...the new Jeff Janice. Janice, who was also caught footballs during his career, racked up a gaudy 17 receptions in 4 years. But Hardman gobbled up 12 receptions just last year alone!

Janice also returned footballs with his lighting speed...a whopping 24 KR over 4 years. Hardman stuffed the stat sheet on KRs with 45 over 7 years.

Hardman has to be the most hyped JAG acquisition in recent Packer history.

I was interested to learn that Tyler Ervin got half a dozen touches per game when he was with the Packers. So I took a look at his stats.

In 2019, he played in four games and had two catches and one rushing attempt, for a total of three touches. That's 1.5 per game.

In 2020, he played in eight games and had 11 catches and 13 rushing attempts, for a total of 24 touches. That's 3 per game. Then his career was over.

That's some HOF type stats right there. I don't know how Hardman can fill those shoes and realize that production. But how he's being written about, I think the possibilities are endless for him. I'm glad we got him.

Well, he did score the game winning TD in overtime in the Superbowl.

So all they left to do is make it to the Superbowl, get into overtime, and then pass the ball to Hardman for the game winner.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Shit Id be happy with receivers we have running the right routes and actually catching footballs.
Reid had one good year at MSU. His senior year he went missing in games and had the dropsies. Gutt loved him.
Look this team needs so much shit we would need 4 drafts to fix this mess: receivers, corners, safeties, line backers, pass rushers, o line.
The people we have at the above just aren't that good

Why is everyone dumping on the guy? It's about competition. If he can help take a bit of the load off Reed and provide any up tick in the return game at all, it's a plus.

I'm not sure what Nixon's deal is.
His biggest value is as a returner.

But tells us he doesn't want to do it anymore?
Is this why Hardman was signed?

I get it, he wants to be a corner, and make some money.
But the truth is he's graded on the bottom half of the league in pass coverage.

He came as far as he has in the NFL based on his return ability, imo.
