Three Packers Who Have Made the Most of Their Chances When Injuries Hit

Injuries are part of football. Every year, key players are out of the lineup as a result of injuries. The maxim for the Green Bay Packers and every NFL team is “next man up.” That doesn’t always work out, but there are times when a backup steps in and takes advantage of an opportunity granted to them because of an injury.

Here is a look at three Packers players who have really stepped up and played well when injuries gave them extended playing time this season:

3. ILB Isaiah McDuffie

The Packers have dealt with injuries to both starting inside linebackers this season. Quay Walker has missed three games while De’Vondre Campbell has missed four and will miss this week’s game in Carolina as well.

That gave backup Isaiah McDuffie a chance to get into the lineup. The Boston College alum has started seven games this season and has played well when called upon.

McDuffie is presently second on the team with 75 total tackles. He made 10 or more tackles in four games this season. McDuffie tends to be better against the run than the two starters. That’s an area of need for the Packers. He also has four tackles for loss.

McDuffie’s biggest weakness is in pass coverage. Opposing quarterbacks have completed 80.8 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by McDuffie this season according to pro-football-reference.com.

McDuffie has been reliable this season as a fill-in for the Packers and his play may make it possible for the Packers to move on from Campbell over this offseason.

2. TE Tucker Kraft

The Packers selected two tight ends on day two of the 2023 NFL Draft with GM Brian Gutekunst adding Luke Musgrave in the second round and Tucker Kraft in the third.

Musgrave won the starting job in training camp and never relinquished it while Kraft took a little longer to adjust to life in the NFL.

The South Dakota State alum had just two catches in the first eight games of the season. He saw most of his action as a blocker and wasn’t a significant factor in the passing game.

But when Musgrave suffered a lacerated kidney, Kraft got his chance. He started the last five games for the Packers and has 15 catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Kraft showed the ability to gain yards after the catch and turn short passes into longer gains.

With Musgrave practicing again and close to returning, the Packers should have a pair of productive tight ends in the lineup before the season is over.

As the duo gains experience and develops better chemistry with Jordan Love, they should be even better in the future.

1. CB Carrington Valentine

The Packers started the season with Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas starting at cornerback with Keisean Nixon as the slot. Former first-round pick Eric Stokes was on the PUP list, but he was expected to play a role in the lineup once he was healthy and ready to return to action.

Seventh round draft pick Carrington Valentine made an impact in training camp and during the preseason and made the team.

Alexander has missed more than half the season thus far while Stokes has appeared in just two games after suffering another injury in his first game back on the field against the Broncos. Douglas was traded to the Bills just before Alexander was injured.

That gave Valentine a chance to get into the lineup. The former Kentucky star has started 10 games this season and has played well despite the shortcomings of Joe Barry’s system which doesn’t play to his strengths.

Barry tends to utilize passive zones and give a lot of cushion to receivers while Valentine excels when he can be physical and bump receivers as they are starting their routes.

Valentine has broken up nine passes this season and made a critical fumble recovery and return against the Giants two weeks ago that set up the go-ahead score in the final two minutes of the game.

Valentine has gained valuable experience this season and has certainly exceeded expectations as the 232nd overall pick in this year’s draft.

From a long term point of view, maybe Kraft is the most important of the three. Having two tight ends with this kind of potential is good news for the offense moving forward. With Musgrave on the shelf, the Packers were forced to abandon their leisurely draft-and-develop routine with Kraft and it has paid dividends; might have also ended the third round curse once and for all.

Valentine has blown away expectations for a seventh-round pick, especially at a position where top talent is often needed to be successful. He is the team leader for passes defensed, and he showed that he has his head in the game with that fumble recovery and subsequent return. Really classy of MLF and Barry to throw the lowly drafted rookie under the bus for missing a call on one of the defense's many third down misadventures lately....

McDuffie has just as many solo tackles as Walker and more combined tackles than Campbell despite playing fewer snaps (in Walker's case, many fewer), so he's done an admirable job when he's been out there.

I’m totally happy with Valentine and Ballentine. Some just pass the eye test immediately.I look back on when GB couldn’t draft a good CB to save their life ( Ahmad Carol) , HaHa etc…and along came Tramon Willams as an undrafted FA. So hopefully this management has an eye for talent. I’m purely speculating here…but Valentine has been better than Stokes when Playtime is compared. I’m not big on the idea of when a guy is in a groove and playing well getting benched because of draft status. He doesn’t seem so injury prone either.I’d take sticky coverage and a penalty here and there vs getting burned deep and poor tackling. If stokes turns out great…hey that’s cool but Ignoring Valentines play and consistency would be huge oversight in my view.

Mcduffoe isn't good. He isn't even average. He can start a game or two in a pinch. Yes, I know Wahle loves him.

don't forget about DWicks and MHeath.
We shouldn't have to draft wr for a few years.
We can start looking for rb's.

WRs should be drafted every year. Doubs and Watson will be in their 3rd year in '24. Hopefully Gutey learned his lesson and they don't go through the Gobi desert of WRs again. In today's NFL the position is too important to not be adding competition every year.

This year I hope they add a speedy receiver for those times Watson can't play.

I’m in the camp of Wicks and Heath getting more snaps…especially with Watson out. I’m not in the Somari Toure camp like some others are…he doesn’t pass my eye test. He might have great camps….But when it counts…I don’t see much out of him. I think Heath definitely deserves play time Over both Toure and Melton.

Draft position is much less important than the ability to be a successful NFL player. RAS scores are nice, but the ability to diagnose and react to a play quickly, and tackle with intensity and get the other player on the ground are more important on defense. On offense, being able to run precise routes, run and pass block effectively, see holes that are about to open, and understanding the weaknesses of a defensive alignment are key.

I'm of the school you draft for quality. Find someone who will fill a position, one position and play that at a very high level.
Shepard Smith is a good example of the Vikes drafting. He had played safety at the pro bowl level for years and years now and is still a vibrant player in his later stages. Not to mention only a few minor injuries over the years.
Our Jairre A had one year the rest were just gawying around and pretending to be something great. He is often hurt, hates to tackle and gets beat often. He was at the end of round one for a reason and a lot of teams knew the reason and passed.

Wow the Vikings made a good draft pick. Still never won anything. You could say the same thing about Davante Adams that you said about Smith. Aaron Jones has been an incredibly productive 5th round pick. Bakhtiari in the 4th round has been better than the number one and two tackles drafted the same year he was drafted. And let’s not even look at the relative ability of the two teams in drafting or picking up free agent QBs.

Stokes and Alexander have been busts from the day Gutt picked them. Add to that the fact that Gary is an average linebacker who looks fat and out of shape this year but we paid him because he had a few sacks.
Throw in Wyatt who has gone missing in two seasons now and yet was a mid first pick.
If Gutt had picked better in those selections this team may be playoff assured. gutt is the one who put this team together and he did a piss poor job at best.
Anyone who thinks Love is the answer is just accepting average as okay and average dont get you squat.
This team lacks play makers on offense and defense. Guys who can turn things around and win games for you.
I have no idea the last time the pass d intercepted a pass. I bet they dont have 5 interceptions all year.

You’re a fucking retard. 🤷‍♂️ You said Gary was fat. So maybe you’re blind too. Retarded and blind. Wyatt has a fumble recovery, 4 sacks and 30 tackles. As far as Love, he’s good and getting better. Everybody knows the elephant in the room for the Packers rn. Just not you I guess. But reading other posts I see you’re just a sad, lonely, loser Viqueens fan. Haha! So pitiful. Smh. Before I go, just to review, you’re a fucking blind retard. Have a nice day.

Bust does not equal all-pro. Alexander can’t be both. You just think these are men and not machines and they should never get hurt playing the most violent game played. You know how many starting QBs have been knocked out for a full season this year? And that’s the most protected position on the field. I can’t even comment on your ridiculous take on Rashan Gary.

THIS: (from GilMartin) "That gave Valentine a chance to get into the lineup. The former Kentucky star has started 10 games this season and has played well despite the shortcomings of Joe Barry’s system which doesn’t play to his strengths.

Tells you all you need to know about Barry. He tries to fit square pegs into round holes where a better coordinator would be adjusting his scheme to emphasise what Valentine does well and minimise the things he does less well. There are far too many "My way or the highway" coaches and they are not what you want in Green Bay.

That’s the Barry defense period. That’s what LaFleur hired him for and that’s what we should be drafting for, if only it worked.

He just hasn’t been the same as ‘21. Too many injuries in ‘22 and ‘23. I feel the guys frustration. But his little public blow-up the other day looked pretty bad.

Very excited about the development of the young players you listed in this article. As many have pointed out, there are other rookie/young players not mentioned who are making significant contributions....which is even more encouraging! I'd like to see McDuffie on the field more often. I've read/heard comments about his being on the smaller/lighter side but his measurables are very similar to those of Roquan Smith, Fred Warner, Bobby Wagner, etc. Heck, the Colts LB Zaire Franklin leads the NFL in tackles and is SMALLER than McD. He's not great against the pass, but who is in Barry's system!? He's a thumper inside who knows how to tackle...just like the names I mentioned earlier. The Packers missed mightily with re-signing Campbell, but with him out and his future in GB becoming murkier by the day, I'd like to see McD in the starting role for the next 3 games. Hopefully the extra PT will help him continue to develop his skill set.....but he's showing what the top LB's in the league display every week, that size at this position isn't as much of a factor as the talking heads would like you to believe......

I’d like to see Kraft utilized more…he just looks like a natural TE in both blocking and catching. I’m fine with Musgrave, but the YAC potential is higher with Kraft.

Like the list however how is LT Rasheed Walker not part of the list? Left tackles don’t grow on trees.
