Watched Odom in the Falcons preseason, looks like a force, solid Bull rush, strong. His measurables don't blow you away but he looks to play faster than his combine numbers would indicate, he' similar to Noah Spence in that regard. I think Fackerell is not on the roster later this year.

I took a little grief for suggesting that Elliott isn't very good, and that Fackrell was a better player now and a better long-term prospect. Of course, we might find that GB offered Fackrell first but could only get a conditiional 7th in the year 2525.

Anyone know anything about Chris Odom? Must have impressed the Packers scouting staff to get him signed right away even though he wasn't drafted by Ted. We can certainly use the depth at OLB.

He was claimed, which means he goes straight to the 53. Hence the dealing of Elliott for a conditional pick (which is a blow to the immediate depth). I know Brooks is coming in (hopefully), but Odom likely doesn't give much for a couple weeks.

Well Brooks was signed so there is that! I'm curious about your opinion regarding Fackrell? Still think he's the "all world difference maker" that you predicted prior to last year's draft? I don't think he'll be on the roster much beyond this season if that.

Dobber; thanks for the explanation on the chain of moves re; Elliot caused by claiming Odom. When I read the announcement, the logic escaped me, but this makes sense. Maybe the issue with Elliot's back reduced his value to the 2017 "all-in" campaign.

Well two of the cut players I wanted back - Hill and Price are gone.

I said yesterday I thought Hill would be gone. Why? Because at 27 he doesn't want to be strictly a developmental player. My guess is the Saints suggested he'll get a real chance at playing. And Hill has a little bit of cockiness about him to believe he can do it now. He seemed to take control of the huddle when he did come in.

Now whether Hill can play within the confines of their offense, I don't know. With the deficiencies in our backup o-line it was extremely hard to tell what any of the backup QB's could do with more than a three step drop.

It was almost always quick passes or a scramble drill. One of the most disappointing aspects of the preseason games is we rarely saw the backups go downfield. I still couldn't tell you what kind of touch and accuracy any of them possess.

Totally disappointed about losing Price. He was the only plus sized d-lineman we had in camp. Played pretty well when he was in from what I could see. Why cut him when there were a couple others who would appear much more likely to make the PS? Think they blew it there. I know Oppy will be bummed.

Had Hill been 23 instead of 27, they'd have surely kept him on 53.

I think Ringo is really emerging, which might explain why Price became expendable. Also, offensive line depth is clearly a priority this year. After all, without #12, none of it matters.

If I'm Hill I'd much rather take my chances at age 27 to overtake the awesome Chase Daniel for the number 2 spot on the NO roster while making at least the rookie minimum, then on the GB PS developing in MM's QB school. It wouldn't even be close.

5 guys, two of which haven't even practiced for the Packers, yet. A very different OLB group from what any of us expected even a week ago. I'm guessing Odom will be a healthy scratch.

"Why would Fackrell not be around?"

Well one reason would be because he's not a very good pass rusher. Another would be because he's a really bad run defender. Although given his draft slot I expect him to get one more season to prove otherwise.

It appears he's better than both Gilbert and Elliot, two of the favorites of many here to unseat him. Let's not even discuss the many WR that most all spelled doom for Janis.
I have often been told I'm wrong and yet my guys stick around like Starks for 6 years.

Elliot has one good pass rushing move (the speed bend) and Fackrell has none. Both of them almost never hold the edge, even against backup Tackles. The difference might have been that they where able to get something back for Elliot. The Packers keeping guys around so long says more about Ted's historic stubbornness with draft picks than it says anything about the amateur GM skills of commenters on this site.

Let's not be revisionist, here.

You didn't say Fackrell was merely going to 'stick around',
you pretty much claimed he was going to unseat both Matthews and Perry. Claimed he was the pass rusher that Dom Capers has needed all this time.

Maybe he will be. Maybe he won't. But let's not change the predictions in order to maintain being "right". Everyone can be "right" all the time when they revise the predictions.

Chug...I still believe the Packers are going to use Clark, Daniels, and Lowry on some passing downs too more than in the past for sure. All 3 are strong as hell and are hard to block with just one OL. Those 3 with Perry/Brooks or CMIII/Brooks or any combination of our OLB group you might want to use to go with those three.

One game at a time but Seattle is going to struggle against the Packers defense next Sunday.

It'll be interesting to see how Dom uses his chess pieces this year. I can't imagine he'll be dialing up the one-DL psycho package as much as he did in the past - not with this D line. The OLB roster has stabilized compared to a couple weeks ago, and I expect Dom will come up with some exotic stuff that sends Burnett and Jones from time to time. It's good to have options.

The key is we need decent coverage on the back end. I'm much more confident this will the case in 2017 with our revamped secondary.

Well, I expect a very vanilla defense for first quarter of season. Hasn't that been the trend last few years? I doubt DC gave the real playbook to the 90 prospects in preseason. So, the exotic stuff is just being printed....and only a week to practice. We won't see much.

I LOVE both the Brooks and Odom signings.... why?
These guys are tough, attacking, violent agressive football players.... something we've been missing on D for a while.
Last week our 3 & 4 OLB were Elliot/Fackrell..... Fackrell is now 5 IMO
This week they are Brooks and Odom..... IMO a huge upgrade.

Fackrell is fine and finesse and will play well on ST's,... he will do some good things in other ways and Beigel will show up half way thru the year

The more I think about it this a good move. Get something for Elliot, (assuming hee passes a physical) and get and upgrade which he is, in Odom. Back issues are a concern, and clearly TT was concerned. Dropping out of 3 practices and a preseason game tells me this is a lingering issue and back issues can really be big problem.

I for one am glad we got Dupre and Gilbert back. The kid they claimed Chris Odom looks lie he's got a motor for sure.

Now, an O-Lineman Ted. Preferably one who's played in the NFL before, snapped a ball before, and one who can block would be swell too.

Getting rid of Elliot for a 7th round pick???? why would you trade a known quantity for an unknown quantity that late in the draft? How many 7th rounders have delivered much for Packers? The risk/reward with Elliot seems better than risk/reward in 7th round. I think that is poor odds, poor trade.

Also....why even did TT draft so many WRs if he was pretty happy with the vets he had (in addition to TEs). Those picks should have gone to other position groups, taking flyers on guys to see if he could have come up with more gems in OLB especially.
I really don't understand all of the draft picks on WR, only to cut them.

Ten offensive linemen (at present) on 53 and two more on PS (so far).

Here's a fact: Aaron Rodgers is getting older. His ability to escape pressure and run is going to be less than before.

This the reason why we see:

1) a large stable of OL players
2) more running backs, and running backs who can pass protect.

The years when you could just chuck Marshall Newhouse out there at LT and not worry about it are GONE.

I don't think #12 would survive such a season at this point. It turns out that the most important player on the team, other than #12 is Bakhtiari. If he gets hurt, then presumably a hobbled Bulaga plays LT and either Spriggs or Murphy goes to RT.

That's pretty much a nightmare scenario.

I don't think we have a HB who is good in pass pro. Williams isn't bad, but he isn't great at it. Everyone else stinks at it. We can play a lot of Rip at FB, but doesn't that negate the whole point of having Monty on the field?

Not if you line up in a power formation and line up Rip in front of Monty. Now you have a bruising RB who can pass pro pretty well, and a shifty RB who can split out wide..

Add in Bennet, and your pick of 2 WR's, and you now have an offense that can give defenses a decision to make: Are they in a power run formation with two WRs? Are they going to split Bennet out for a 3 wide look with max protection for Rodgers? Does Bennet stay tight and Monty split out for a 3 wide look with Rip a potential short yardage threat on a draw, release valve in the flat, or protection? Do the Packers split Bennet and send Ty out wide for a 4 WR look with Rip still in the backfield for protection?

...and once the D picks either a LB or CB/S for the 11th man, there's hopefully a mismatch to be exploited by formation, and then you know the drill- up tempo, no huddle offense and eventually get that shot play when the defense tries to substitute.

Can't understand the extra running back (Mays). Joe Kerridge went to injured reserve, per reports.

Big let down is Brian Price. Would rather they let either Ricky Jean or Joe Thomas go (like last year) and have Matthews available should Nitro (Burnett, Jones and Brice)/Jake and Blake not be enough to man the on-field position. Hurry back and develop Montevravius.

Still looking for two more WRs and an ILb to come back for practice squad.

I don't understand how anybody could worry about the guys that were cut or the late round draft pick WR's ?

Obviously some fans here think they are great evaluators of talent. Potentially huge problem opened up at OL so extra bodies stashed there makes perfect sense. Guys here upset that the 175th and 247th picks in the draft and a couple of UDFA's did not make the 53 man roster. Good grief.

Trevor Davis and Geronimo Allison have been chosen to fill the young developmental WR roster spots. Nelson, Adams, Cobb, Janis, 3 TE's, and a couple of capable pass catching RB's (remember Monty was a WR). Plenty of targets for #12 and only so many balls to go around.

NF, A voice of reason. Hope you are ready for the inevitable thumbs down. Every year the Packers fans (and I'm sure it's the same on other team's fan sites) over value the bottom of the roster. None of these players will be the "key" player who would keep us out of the SB. I guess it's natural that fans fall for a favorite "long shot", but sometimes it gets a little ridiculous. Now I can wait for my own dislikes for agreeing with you (sigh).

Thanks Spock. I think Janice in the post just after mine is probably correct that most comments are not really "upset". Part of the fun of being a sports fan for all of us is developing attachments to players and opinions too. I'm in the same boat as everyone in that regard.

I probably just focused too much on a few comments made in the past 2 or 3 days where people seemed so passionate about some bottom of the roster prospect. As you wrote, very unlikely one or two of those players would have made much of an impact.

Of course you are correct. -- Late round WRs are a dime a dozen. --- And... most fans have absolutely no basis for evaluating the bottom of any NFL roster. ----- It's actually a bit comical to read the analysis of fans who don't even attend practices and fall asleep during preseason games.

i would keep the guys that performed in practice and games over guys that are kept on the roster in case someone gets hurt!!!!! Patrick and McCray over Price, McCaffrey, Gilbert, Dupre????/ come on....stash those OL on the PS and call them up if there are injuries. letting your better players go just to have 10 OL makes no sense to me!

I agree with much of your comment NitschkeFan, all but the extra O-Linemen making perfect sense. Now I do agree with the EXTRA part, I don't agree with who the actual bodies are through. I understand they're at least familiar with the system, but they couldn't block 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string players. How in the hell are they going to block and actual starting caliber D-Linemen?

Agree 100% on the receivers though. 12 is stacked and doesn't have any shortage of talent to throw too. I didn't think Davis would do much but I admit he changed my mind about him this summer. Allison is going to continue to get better and better. He already has some damn good hands, can get off the line, and he works back to Rodgers when he starts buying time scrambling really well.

We need someone who is healthy that knows how to snap the ball. That's McCray. Patrick is a little better, but he's still in concussion protocol. Barclay (the 2017 prior to his ankle injury version) is a little better than Patrick, but he is (being generous) just a serviceable NFL OG, a marginal OC, and purely theoretically RT, and now he's on IR.

Surprised the FO couldn't find someone better than McCray. They didn't want to waive/injured Patrick as that has financial repercussions and it means we can't re-sign him right away, IIRC.

"Surprised the FO couldn't find someone better than McCray."

What about Creco or Zuttah? Both are veterans who were actually starters last season IIRC. I understand neither is familiar with the offense but I'd imagine they could catch up quickly enough to be serviceable in a pinch. Maybe they don't want to be backups, maybe it's a money thing, but I'd sleep better at night knowing McCray isn't coming off the bench should Lindsey get injured.

I don't think anyone here is this Ray N: "obviously some fans here think they are great evaluators of talent." It's just fans expressing their opinion on today's happenings is all I see, just as you are in your post, which is valid too.

I agree Denise, and sorry I just referred to you as "Janice" for some reason in my response above to Spock. I don't think most posts were unreasonable, just a few in the past couple of days that I didn't understand such passion about bottom of the roster prospects.

From thefalcoholic.com website:

"Two former Falcons got picked up and added to some active rosters (DE Chis Odom, WR Reggie Davis). In fact, it was two players we thought might make the roster. . . . "

"Odom looked really impressive and was given a ton of snaps this preseason. I had him penciled into the final 53."

I wish that we could have brought Hill and Price back.
Price would be good depth on the DL.
Can't say that I'm surprised that both were picked up. Disappointed that McCaffery was not brought back.
I don't see Yancey over McCaffery or Clark.
At least we have Donatello Brown back for depth in the secondary.
7 days to a meaningful football game.
Thanks, Since '61

Haven't heard anything about Clark, but according to Packer beat writers Dupre and McCaffrey have no interest in coming back.

I know nothing about Odom but if he a) couldn't make the Falcons final 53 and b) made it all the way to Green Bay on the waiver claims (they'd be what, #29 in the pecking order?), he's probably not gonna step in and help out much this year. Hopefully he can at least contribute on special teams.

If Barclay was going to IR, you've gotta have a backup C. My guess is they can't say whether Patrick will make it out of the concussion protocol by kickoff with Seattle...which forced them to keep McCray.

Can't play if you're not on the 53.

i'm way out (far out?) here in California,
so I may be less tuned to all the local
knowledge, but it struck me as odd that
the Packers kept 5 running backs.

Cowboys claimed Brian Price.

He's one of three DT's on their active 53 man roster.

Yep.. I'm pissed off.

I thought it came down to Price or Ringo, but not both. I preferred Price to Ringo, but it was a close call. I thought Price was the only DL who could play NT. GB does have RJF and Clark, even Daniels, who can and have played 1 tech. Oh well.

McCaffrey and Price should have been on the 53. McCray and Thomas should have been gone. i like Thomas but he can't cover anyone over the middle and he is our 3rd down LB????

Not smart thinking. I read few comments above why they are keeping McCray - Patrick is in concussion protocol and they are not sure if he will be cleared, while Barclay is placed on IR. So, if Corey will not be able to play against Seatlle, would McCaffrey or Price play center than?

I'm glad they are keeping Clark on PS. I thihnk he has much more upside than McCaffrey and almost certain more over Dupre...

Clark thinks on similar way as Aaron, and that is why Aaron likes him a lot. Now, if he will be able to develop on PS, I think he will be hell of WR next season - with that speed and size he might be new Megatron!

I like this Odom pick up. We may now have gone from an area of weakness to one of strength wherein we can now spell our 2 fragile stars at OLB and not see an appreciable drop off. We can rest our starters now and not get runned over as usual. Maybe they Perry and Mathews can last a season now
