Packers Vs. Falcons: Offense, Defense & Special Teams
One thing to watch for in each phase of the game as the Packers prepare to take on the Falcons in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.
Here's some key aspects to watch for in each phase of the game from a Packers perspective...
Offense
- Control the tempo – The Packers need to turn the tables on the Falcons. Atlanta is a team known for their multiple formations on offense that keeps the defense guessing. If the Packers can play two at that game, the tide may turn in their favor. And the job gets easier if James Starks is able to be effective like they he was able to do last week. By rotating seamlessly from three-running back sets to five-wide receiver sets on offense, the Packers will force the Falcons to keep changing their personnel, and at some point or another, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going to be able to find a mismatch at the line of scrimmage, and the Packers can take advantage of it. By the same token, the Packers won't be able to control the tempo if they have a lot of three-and-out series.
Defense
- Get off the field – As I've referenced several times throughout the course of the week on the blog, the Packers offense basically only had seven possessions in the first meeting against Atlanta this year, and seven is a very, very low number. The more opportunities the Packers have this evening, the better. But to be better on offense, the Packers defense has to get the ball back to them whether it's forcing punts or forcing turnovers. If the Falcons go on several, time-consuming drives like they did the first meeting and have done many times throughout the course of the season, they stand a good chance of winning when combined with their home field advantage. Getting off the field will also also help prevent fatigue, which may pay dividends from getting run down late in the game.
Special teams
- Maintain consistency – Head coach Mike McCarthy gave credit this week to his special teams personnel that's stayed consistent over the past couple weeks and has rewarded the team with results against some of the best returners in the game like Devin Hester and DeSean Jackson. The job barely gets easier today when they have to face the Falcons' Eric Weems. The special teams personnel might get shaken up with the return of Korey Hall and Atari Bigby who have been out of action the past couple weeks. No matter who's on the kickoff coverage units, they have the same high level of play they've had the past two weeks.
