Packers' Top-5 Draft Needs For 2024 Part 1

A look at the Packers' possible needs midway through the season.

It's time...to say yes to the D.I.C.

(I'm a veteran...this humor will never go away - and I'm this close to Nags making a shirt in the shop)

We're 9 games in now...the proverbial halfway point for the season and it's safe to say we're all disappointed on how it's gone. But 2024 breathes new life, hope, and impeccable storylines starting in April in Detroit. That's right we are less than 6 months away from the 2024 NFL Draft.

Now some of you may be wondering just what direction GM Brian Gutekunst goes with a team that is amongst the youngest in the NFL? Surely he can't go younger, maybe sign some experienced vets instead through Free Agency? Welp, unfortunately, there are no vets in the Draft, so he'll be looking to find the athletes that best help this team to recapture the magic we've all become accustomed to these past 30 or so years. Looking to the future Gutekunst has got some real options on the table, as the Packers have 8 picks total, with 6 of them coming in the first 4 rounds; but when you take into account the Packers' possible compensatory picks, the Packers could have a whopping 11 with 7 in the first 4 rounds. That's some real draft capital right there, possibly the most Gutekunst has ever had. I won't speculate on the infinite trade scenarios here, but you can expect his customary "move around the board" line eventually when the time comes.

8 picks...11 picks...either way it's a lot of picks. We won't go into specifics on possible players just yet (I'm revising my scouting approach and we might have something special planned for yall later), but we'll cover just the most pressing needs as the season toils on (some more obvious than others).

#1 - Offensive Tackle

Well duh!!! It's no surprise with the loss of David Bakhtiari after just one game that the Packers' offensive line would have some struggles this year. Granted, some of that is to be blamed on Head Coach Matt LaFleur and his blatant refusal to play his best players (Yosh Nijman and Sean Rhyan) in spots that set the offense up for success. However, I don't want to pretend this group is completely abysmal, as they are currently the 4th best pass-blocking unit, but when it comes to the run game, a key tenet of LaFleur's offense, they're 25th - per PFF.

With the Packers probably all but guaranteed a Top-5 pick, they most likely will own the rights to the best OT in the Draft. Now food for thought, and maybe a bit of a darkhorse opinion here...but the best OT in the Draft's best position could be at Right Tackle, and that's perfectly fine! It's still a massive upgrade because it allows Zach Tom to move to Center, which basically fixes two positions of need with one selection. Yosh Nijman is an above-average Left Tackle, and he probably won't improve any further than he already has, but with the right selection at RT, we could easily see the Packers going from 4th and 25th in 2023, to possibly 2nd and 13th for 2024. That's huge dividends for Jordan Love and the other skill players.

I could also see a scenario where due to how the Draft falls, two OTs could be taken between Day 1 and Day 2. Both Yosh and Rasheed Walker are under contract for 2024, and while Walker has a long way to go for development, I can live with him possibly coming in and playing RT only in a pinch to get us through a game. But Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker, and the popular Caleb Jones for our reserve tackle group is an acceptable situation.

#2 - Running Back

Some of you probably saw this coming, and if you didn't when Gutekunst admitted he was actively in discussion with the Colts for Johnathan Taylor, then shame on you. Aaron Jones is in his age-29 season, A.J. Dillon is in the last year of his contract. We knew the clock was ticking on Jones, but it's safe to say that Dillon hasn't proven he's the RB of the future either. I'm not a contracts aficionado so I'll defer to my fellow writers on that aspect but I fully see Jones back next year for one last dance and to ensure a proper "handoff" to Green Bay's future RB1. I can see A.J. coming back as well but they're going to force-feed him the hometown discount but I definitely expect at least 2-3 teams to be willing to overpay.

I will give a small applause to Gutuekunst because if there was a class to want a RB, the '24 class is it....and he's held on to both Jones and Dillon long enough to make the transition. There are some top flight options to have on Day 2 and if there was definitely a 3rd Round choice where you could feel "safe" like it wasn't going to blow up in the Packers' faces this would be it. My only concern is there will probably be a run on the position in the middle of the 2nd Round so it may require Gutey to burn the 2nd Rounder from the Jets to get who he wants.

#3 - Cornerback

No brainer here, the loss of Rasul Douglas leaves a glaring hole in the secondary. We haven't seen Eric Stokes hardly at all this year, and may not see him the rest of the season so he can be healthy for 2024. Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine have looked serviceable, which I love for our depth as a group. But I'm not comfortable trotting them out there week to week and we don't know if Keisean Nixon will return to play Nickel; his contract is very expendable but for Special Teams value he should remain. Either way, this group needs some kind of upgrade.

I don't know when Gutekunst will select a CB, but I think most likely the back end of Day 2, however, if a guy with a 1st Round Grade is available with the first of the two 2nd Round Picks, I could see that happening as well. I'm not super impressed with the class this year so the majority of my rankings will probably be guys with a RAS of 9.75 or better and ball production that averages around 2 interceptions per year (I know...leave me be). Whether that's on the boundary or in the slot remains to be seen.

#4 - Interior Offensive Line

Some of you may be saying this is the 2nd largest need, but I say again, with the selection of a Tier 1 Right Tackle, this offensive line is destined for some serious improvement. In my previous article mentioning Sean Rhyan and how good he looked, I think the combination of Jenkins-Tom-Rhyan deserves a potential 1-year run. However, I'm not naive, maybe Rhyan just flashed for one game and that's it. But even still, this is effectively a second rookie year for him, so even if he's not a starter for 2024, he deserves some serious snaps going forward. You don't want to discard a player simply for an isolated bad case of judgment only for them to go be a Pro Bowler somewhere else. If Sean Rhyan went in the middle of the 3rd Round, it's safe to say there were probably 4-7 other teams who probably wanted him there too; and probably 10+ teams who prayed he'd slide to the 4th, but Gutekunst snatched him up first. We need to see this story play out fully.

Honestly, this pick is designed to get rid of two players to free up some cap room: Royce Newman and Josh Myers. If Zach Tom is the starting Center for 2024, we are set for years to come. I'm okay with another Right Guard in the 3rd or 4th Round who can probably challenge Rhyan, but without a doubt render Newman obsolete. Truthfully, that player is already on the roster in Jon Runyan, who I'd love to see back in a reserve/spot-starter role. If Gutekunst were to double or even triple-dip for 2024 I imagine it'd be at this position group right here.

#5 - Safety

Some of you were wondering if I'd ever get here, weren't you? I'm REALLY hoping I somehow find a way to chat with Gutey in person for 2025 so I can pick his brain, but this is the "game within the game" selection if you ask me. Truthfully, as long as Joe Barry is the Defensive Coordinator, Safety play will always be lacking. His scheme/concepts/approach just lends to them looking bad. Is it all him? No...Rudy Ford has done as well as you can ask in the Strong Safety position. Darnell Savage has been "Darnell Average", and I think a DC change brings him up a bit (but a good amount is also on him). Honestly, this pick is more about raising the "floor" of this group than it is about raising the "ceiling". I like Leavitt but he seems to be more of a special teamer. I think we'll finally get a taste of Anthony Johnson next year, and Jonathan Owens has looked like an average spot starter as advertised at the Free Safety. Zayne? Umm....yeah.

This year's Safety class is better than last year's, but still mostly high-cut. I can easily see CB and S flip-flopping depending on how the Draft falls. Barry's system was supposed to rely on some kind of 3-safety system, but we never saw that materialize; truthfully we don't really have the personnel for it either. Maybe in the future, it could be Owens-Ford-Johnson Jr, but I'd rather pray for a new Defensive Coordinator with a new approach, right now we're getting probably 65% of the secondary's potential and probably 75% of the defense's potential overall. A better DC could make the pairing of Owens and Ford alone look pretty good if they coach it up right. So until we see the necessary change, it's hard to mock another safety so high, but I do expect a selection no later than the second of our two 4th Round Picks.

Talking the NFL Draft is always fun, we'll check back in towards the end of the season(probably around elimination time) with some projected players.

#GPG.

way too early for me to think about the draft.
Let's see who's healthy and under contract heading into the draft
Let' see which veteran RB, S, G, WR and/or TE are signed in free agency.
Then I'll be ready to think draft.

Those are our two biggest linebackers. I can wait for development to work, but I'm not sure anyone on this coaching staff is helping anyone develop.

Or Gary? That's the same complaint we heard when he was drafted. I'm certainly not a Brian Gutekunst fan, but when he gets it right I will tip my cap. I was fine with the Van Ness pick. Time will tell, but it's way too early to condemn the pick in my ever so humble opinion.

The season is over. No playoffs this year. Packers will have a Top 10 draft pick, so it's not surprising draft chatter has started.

I think you better let this team,
and staff finish the year first.

If NOT !!!
It's time to get healthy.
Time to trade the often injured guys.
If you can go with Rookies over Douglass and Savage.
You can dump salary and Buy what you need.

And by that time they'll know if they want the Love Era.

In addition, Jaire is now entering the discussion. Maybe his CAP is too large to move? Valentine I had rated as a three pick after watching his play in the SEC. Definitely a 4-3 hybrid will be needed and LaFleur can scapegoat Barry to leverage his Job.

Joseph, if we start talking about the draft right now, what are we going to talk about between seasons? Oh! I remember! We'll talk about what we should have done earlier.

I would love them taking some 5-star O-linemen. Do I believe that will ever happen? Will they even play the best 5 if they do?

I think they have a sleeper plan and are hiding Newman to take the NFL by storm next season.

My current guess is that the Packers will take an offensive tackle with their first pick (and I’d love if it is OL’ Fashioned! 😃)
BUT, if there is a guy they think will be a franchise QB, they have to take him, as they’re worth their weight in green and gold. I don’t think a guy like that will be there.
I wouldn’t take a RB until round three at the earliest; I’m not a huge fan of this year’s RBs (so far).
A very good NT/DT would be helpful.
I wouldn’t go CB until mid rounds; Alexander, Valentine, and Stokes should be solid. I’d love a good Safety, though.
I’m most hopeful that we will pick offensive linemen with two of our first three picks.
I actually think our WRs will develop into a solid group; I also like some of our practice squad WRs…

We literally just drafted an edge rusher who excelled in generating pressure, two defensive linemen who excelled against the run, a boundary corner, and a safety who can also play cornerback????

The Packers need an offensive tackle, a left tackle, for certain. I'm not sure the team thinks that but a draft and go guy like Alt from Notre Dame would be ideal. There's a good chance both running backs will be gone, so that is a need.

But depending where the Packers end up picking in the first round they should consider one other position: quarterback. Love is signed through next year. If the Packers have a shot at one of the bevy of good looking prospects, they should give it a shot. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Think Sean Clifford is the guy to win it all?

If the stars align and the Packers get a shot early on, then that's my choice. You can never have enough quarterbacks.

For draft addicts it is never too soon to talk about the draft. Looks like our first pick will be in the 5-8 range. We should take one of the premier O tackles. Frankly, I think the elephant in the room is how to improve our run defense. Aaron was correct to point out we have a lot of good athletes on defense but seem to lack great tacklers. We have good depth in our front four and hopefully that will improve. It seems our D-line can get pressure on the QB but has consistently had problems stopping the run. That was the most demoralizing thing about the game with the Steelers. We are good at CB especially if Jaire and Stokes get healthy. Also, we have a lot of possible gems on both offense and defense that have really not been given a good look. The most blatant example is Caleb Jones. Why he has not been introduced in short yardage situations as a sixth linemen is beyond me. He is a monster of a man at 6'8 and 370 lbs and he is not even suiting up ? Seriously?

Our run defense I put squarely on Joe Barry for not putting the defense in position to succeed.

Also, I get how everyone loves how large Jones is, but there's a reason people of his size aren't for long in this league. He probably did just fine in college because he could win on sheer size, but more athletic and more technically diverse defensive linemen in the NFL probably give him fits. But he could be ready for some regular season action now for all we know...only LeFleur really has the answer.

Caleb is huge, yes, but he had a terrible RAS. He performed better in the preseason than expected, but not seeing practices, he may REALLY struggle with speed/NFL linemen.

Nijman is not under contract for 2024...he accepted the Packers' one-year RFA tender, then the Packers added void years to push out his cap hit, but not playable years. In recent years, the Packers have not extended other players who were in that position. It seems even more unlikely in this case since the Packers keep trotting Walker out there.

The Packers would need to either extend Aaron Jones' contract or ask him to take a pay cut. His cap hit of $17M in 2024 is untenable given a savings of about $6M against a tight cap. He also has a bunch of void years to figure out if they keep him around.

Thank you for that, I was looking at the cap and forgot those were just void years. I admit I'm not the best with contracts. I think Yosh at least gets a hometown discount tender, especially if Gutey doesn't get all the guys he wants in the Draft.

ALL of these are WRONG - we may need to replace a few that may be leaving ie Dillon and Jones - and definitely Bak. But we do have some guys and we may need to add some others in the late rounds. But in watching the other good to great teams - we need to add to the linebackers/hybrid Dbacks. Guys with get up and go and tackling ability. We have spent enough draft capital both recently and with TT on lock down Dbacks and supposed great middle linebacks - AJ Hawk etc. But the game has changed. The need for speed is paramount. The need for guys who are willing to tackle one on one is paramount. The need for receivers - this time around is minimal - But in the top rounds everything should be spent on the D. In the later rounds bring in some Oline development guys, Tired of seeing our cast offs Billy Turner ( Jets) playing for other teams so get our guys trained and experienced - cant see what Rhyan and Caleb can do on the bench. And I dont know about what other people may think - but we have some quitters on this team who dont want to play through pain and who just want to sit out with a boo boo or 2. When the going gets tough the tough get going. Easy to collect a pay check and hopefully wait for another contract - leadership is lacking both in the staff and maybe on the team.

You could do far worse with Aaron Jones as your RB 1B, even with him approaching 30. Dillon is probably on the bubble and really depends on if Emmanuel Wilson gets any real burn later in the season. I'm not the best contracts guy but I don't believe Jones being cut this offseason is best for business, but absolutely in 2024-2025 he can be let go.

I look to Gutey getting a true bell-cow who doesn't have to get off the field. Combined with Jones, even if he's approaching 30, that should give the offense plenty of great looks to confuse the defense. If Wilson is retained as I expect him to, Dillon is the odd man out.

#33 and 28 are great when they're on the field together. They just need an O line. #28 can also play the fullback role, which might be a better use for him. He and Owens should both work on their speed, they seem well behind their combine times.

I'd love to see #31 Wilson retained. The time to play him was when #33 was out.

I'd be surprised if they can keep both 33 and 28 next year, I think that's a cap casualty.

There aren't any projects that I have inside the Top-10. Just for you though I promise you I'll do an article on the best ones I find for this year's draft class. I appreciate you weighing in on that.

Keep in mind that 3 of the last 4 projects we've drafted have panned out:

Rashan Gary
Zach Tom
Lukas Van Ness

Only Royce Newman failed to live up to any sort of reasonable expectations.

Sh - is top ten first rd on pff but he is a RT right now joe alt is a LT and pff very high on him he is right in gb range now I would even consider trading back a little and taking a mims a very well built LT that lacks playing time due to injury but only if we get another second rd to trade back than a fun wr in the second would be brandan rice ( Jerry’s kid) tall big bodied 4.38 forty time also bullock would be fine safety but corner can also be had in second tj Tampa and a couple more but I’d look for a nickel type guy also to replace Nixon if he leaves. I’d love gram Barton but I think he goes late first - rb can be had in 3rd or 4th

As it stands after Week 10, the Packers have a Top 6-10 draft pick. They could end up 6-11 at the end of the season based on the remaining games and probability of winning those games. With a 6-11 record, they will probably land in the Top 10, but not the Top 5.

Exactly what I was saying above but got 3 downvotes. The name of the game is speed = both offensively and defensively. With the jet sweeps and swing passes and the running QB 's one needs both outside linebackers with speed who can tackle - as well as DBacks with speed and toughness who are willing to tackle. Quay Walker has some better skills on the outside then on the inside IMO. And then when you have this one can rush the passer - with whatever group less passive DC would want to bring. This passive approach means that we get dinked and dunked to loss after loss to good teams.
