Packers Practice Roundup: Day 8. Family Night, 2019.

Packers Practice Roundup: Day 8.  Family Night, 2019

Here is a sampling of the tweets by the media observers who watched Friday's Family Night scrimmage.  Note that some were there in person, but others watched it on television.  Many of you (but not all) were able to watch the Family Night, so it will be interesting to learn whether the readers saw the same things that the media folks did!

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Still out: Mason Crosby (calf), RB Jamaal Williams (hamstring), RB Aaron Jones (hamstring), CB Josh Jackson (foot), OLB Kendall Donnerson (hamstring), OLB Greg Roberts (abdomen), T Jason Spriggs (trapezius) and DE Fadol Brown. Mike Tyson (personal matter) and Bolton (illness) returned.  Demovsky
  • Tony Brown and Ka'Dar Hollman getting nickel team reps, along with Natrell Jamerson &Raven Green at safety vs. 1st team offense.  Owczarski

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Rodgers with a fun little scramble. Rodgers looks healthy and unsurprisingly Rodgers looks great.  Herman
  • DeShone Kizer keeps struggling.  Ints by Sullivan and Tony Brown.  Demovsky
  • Kizer is just do up and down. He’s had good moments in camp, made some impressive throws. And he’s had some of these plays too. Really curious to see how he looks in preseason, which will count most for QBs.  Wood
  • Teo Redding with a catch. Shepherd on a slant from Kizer. 34 seconds left. Strong, confident throw by Kizer.  Herman
  • Jake Kumerow, Trevor Davis keep climbing the depth chart.  Demovsky
  • 1:30 to play. One timeout. Big play from Rodgers to Graham. No huddle. Great protection for Rodgers. Now Rodgers find Allison on the slant. Laser throw. Incomplete to MVS setting up 2nd down and 10 from the 40. Sugar huddle by the offense. Alex Light with valuable reps.  Herman
  • Rodgers hits Graham (13 yards), Allison (12), Kumerow (13) but MVS drops one inside the 5-yard line and the Packers have to settle for a Sam Ficken FG (35 yards) in the 2-minute. Demovsky
  • MVS fights through a hands to the face from King, TD.  Owczarski
  • Jake Kumerow alert 2.0: Outstretched grab for 13 yards Demovsky
  • Jake Kumerow alert: 37-yard reception down the right sideline over Jaire Alexander from Aaron Rodgers. Next play, Rodgers hits Adams deep down the middle for a 40-yard completion vs. Kevin King.  Demovsky
  • Boyle overthrows Lazard which admittedly is very hard to do.  Herman
  • Play action fake and Boyle massively underthrows Moore with no pressure.  Herman
  • DeShone Kizer stared down Eq St. Brown on an out to the left sideline, and Tony Brown read it like a book. Turned it into a 30-yard Pick-6. The Packers have to have better from their backup QB. Demovsky
  • Jake Kumerow was so good tonight. Nagler
  • Darius Shepherd with a big catch on 3rd to move the chains. That’s a really nice play for him. Boyle took a high snap and threw a big high and behind Shep who adjusted to get the catch and the first.  [Nice video available – Shepherd outfought CB Rouse.]  Herman
  • Trevor Davis just mossed the bejeezus out of Rouse.  Uglem [2 of his receptions and most of Trevor Davis’ receiving yards including the 70 yarder came against Rouse.]
  • Rodgers to Allison in the slot to convert on "third-and-1" in move the ball.  Hodkiewicz
  • The six BEST wide receivers right now if you needed to play a game today are Adams - MVS - EQ - Allison - Kumerow - Davis. Whether they decide to keep the youth/upside of a player like Moore, Shepherd, or Redding remains to be seen but the best 6 are very apparent.  Herman
  • The wide receiver picture starting to take shape: Kumerow and Trevor Davis belong as the #4 and #5 behind Davante, MVS and Allison.  Kumerow: 3 recs for 63 yards including a 37 yarder against Jaire and a 13 yard back shoulder fade from AR and laid out for a 13 yarder from Boyle.  Davis had 4 recs for 100 yards including a 70 yarder from Wilkins.  Don’t count out Shepherd as #6.  Demovsky [Demosky has ESB as #6 and Herman has him #3?  Or maybe Andy Herman’s aren’t listed in order.  But see below.]
  • [Cutdowns could get interesting.]  Let’s say GB’s set on keeping only 6 WRs but they love their top 7. If nobody is willing to give picks for Allison/Kumerow/Davis but would give a 4 for EQ? Would you take a 4 & Moore or EQ?  Herman

Tight Ends:

  • Nice route by Tonyan who makes the catch and then gets up field vs Burks.  Herman
  • Tonyan gets Raven Greene. Nice throw from Wilkins.  Uglem
  • Tonyan nice corner route for a touchdown vs Savage. J’Mon had a ball go off his hands. Been an issue for him historically.  Herman

Running Backs:

  • Vitale with a big run to the outside.  Herman
  • A little hesitation from D. Williams but finds an opening for a nice gain.  Herman [Interesting how to grade this – LaFleur doesn’t want Dexter dancing in the hole.]
  • Tra Carson a win in pass pro.  Herman

Defensive Backs:

  • Hollman and Sullivan continue strong camps. Chandon Sullivan continues his really strong play. Diving interception for Sullivan.  Herman
  • Kizer's pass is picked off by rookie Chandron Sullivan off a deflection, but it sure looked like pass interference by Ka'Dar Hollman on J'Mon Moore. Demovsky
  • Shepherd just ate Chandon S alive in one on ones. TD.  Uglem
  • Trevor Davis, who is having his best camp, is picking on Nydair Rouse tonight. Just plucked a pass from Tim Boyle over Rouse’s helmet. He beat Rouse for 70-yard TD from Manny Wilkins earlier tonight.  Silverstein
  • Sullivan got beat on the play by Shepherd.  Herman
  • CB Kabion Ento keeps showing up with passes broken up. Played WR at Colorado, but he has cornerback length and a 41 1/2-inch vertical. Interesting prospect to watch rest of camp.  Silverstein

Safety:

  • Kizer buys enough time for Shepherd to beat Jamerson for 15.  Uglem
  • Raven Greene with the 1s.  Herman
  • With Darnell Savage Jr. still not taking team reps, defense went with Adrian Amos and Natrell Jamerson deep and Raven Greene in box for three-safety look. Josh Jones in second team. Wood

Linebackers:

  • Stop by Burks on Carson.  Herman
  • Say this about Ty Summers, he seems to find a way to the QB on blitzes. Demovsky
  • Summers has been an absolute machine on inside blitzes. His athleticism is very evident.  Herman
  • Tra Carson bears Brady Sheldon deep, poor throw from Wilkins. Vitale beats Burks on a slant. Nice coverage by Crawford on Malcolm Johnson. Ty Summers solid coverage on Darrin Hall. Got his head around at the end.  Herman
  • Crawford with a blitz along with Fackrell. Both get home for an easy “sack.” Defends is dominating.  Herman

Kicker/STs:

  • Sam Ficken good from 63 but misses 3 others (54, 50 and 40, all wide right).  Went 9 of 12. Demovsky
  • Ficken finishes 9 of 12 on field goals. Hits from 38, 40, 28, 35, 33, 47, 51, 54 and 63. Misses from 54, 50 and 40.  Silverstein
  • On six punts from a variety of yard lines, JK Scott averaged 4.46 seconds of hang time. He put three inside the 12 and had one touchback.  Demovsky
  • Shepherd back as the 1st string PR.  Uglem

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • MVS can’t come up with a sliding catch. FG attempt upcoming. The Smiths converged on the QB with Za’Darius getting the major pressure through Turner.  Herman
  • Alex Light, who's had a strong camp, is taking the team reps at right tackle for Bryan Bulaga.  Demovsky
  • Alex Light getting first-team reps, and really struggled in move-the-ball period against Preston Smith. Tough matchup against Smith’s speed.  Wood
  • Good pressure from Montravius Adams.  Herman
  • Kizer's O-line not holding up very well. Montravius Adams ran right past rookie G Elgton Jenkins and would have had an easy sack.  Silverstein
  • Kingsley Keke with a run stop at the LOS.  Herman
  • Wilkins seems to be the victim of really high snaps in shotgun more than anyone else. It's not like he's short either. These things keep going way over his head.  Silverstein
  • Madison air-mails a shotgun snap to Wilkins.  Herman
  • Right side of OL responds - nice hole for Tra Carson as Elgton Jenkins turns Tyler Lancaster.  Owczarski
  • Gary also had a solid rush on Nijman on the play. Ficken miss from 50+  Herman
  • Kenny Clark is having himself a practice today vs. Corey Linsley. Disrupted the last pass play. Owczarski
  • McCray hold on Lancaster.  Herman
  • David Bakhtiari gets out in space and just abuses Oren Burks in the open field. Clears some space for Dexter Williams which they count as a touchdown…. Herman
  • Carson stuffed at the line by Za’Darius Smith. Dude is a beast.  Herman
  • Demovsky’s 1 on 1 win chart is interesting.  Pankey (5-0), McCray (6-1), Madison (3-1), Light (6-3), Nijman (2-2) and Keke (3-5) are interesting.  Mr. Demovsky's full chart can be found here.
  • First round of 1-on-1 pass-rushing: RT Alex Light 2-0 vs. Kyler Fackrell RG Billy Turner 2-0 vs. Mont Adams C Corey Linsley 1-1 vs. Kenny Clark LG Lane Taylor 2-0 vs. Dean Lowry LT David Bakhtiari 1-1 vs. Z. Smith.  Schneidman
  • Gary goes 2-0 -- both against Adam Pankey just now. Among the starters: Alex Light (filling in for Bulaga) 2-0 vs. Fackrell; Turner 2-0 vs. Adams; Linsley and Clark 1-1; Taylor 2-0 vs. Lowry; Bakhtiari and Z. Smith 1-1 Demovsky
  • This was David Bakhtiari’s night against Za’Darius Smith. The left tackle won both reps. Those have been some really good battles on camp.  Wood [Demovsky and Schneidman wrote Bakh went 1-1 with ZaDarius – so there is room for interpretation, I guess.]

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • Dexter Williams with a carry - Oren Burks has him for a loss. Green Bay has struggled on this stretch run plays - a key component of the Packers offense.  Herman
  • Attendance down – it was 56.1K down from 64.7K last year.  Demovsky
  • Nice pass rush by Za’Darius Smith who may just be the MVP of camp so far. He & Adams are battling for it imo.  Herman
  • Stock up: WR Jake Kumerow, LB Ty Summers, RT Alex Light; Down: QB DeShone Kizer, CB Nydair Rouse.  Schneidman
  • Standouts: Trevor Davis!!! Jake Kumerow!!! Tony Brown!!! Za’Darius Smith, Alex Light, Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Ty Summers.  Herman

It was a close call, but I put Jake Kumerow's photo at the top of the article. I felt that Kumerow could have replicated his performance in a real game against NFL starters. Tony Brown and Trevor Davis were in the mix, but some of their plays came against backups.

Obviously, using photos of Davante, AR, Bakh, Clark, and to a lesser extent since he is new to the packers, ZaDarius, (who really has looked good) wouldn't tell readers much: everyone knows they are good.

I think guys like Preston Smith and Adrian Amos need to be seen in games.

Pretty much everyone needs to be seen in games, since there's been no . . . . games.

Remember when we would always have a capable backup QB during the Wolf era? I miss that strategy

Any team that doesn't have a capable back up QB is like playing Russian roulette!

If the Packers would have had a decent backup quarterback the last two years, the seasons would have been more bearable.

Remember that we did not need the backup QB that much back than….? Even today AR played all 16 games 4 times the last 5 years.

Might want to give Josh McCown a call. Talk him out of retirement. The backup QB situation looks bad.

Trevor Davis and Jake Kumerow have real good shots at making this team
The depth at RB, WR, CB, and DL should make this a very exciting preseason, if the QBs can put it in the right hands

Darrius Shepherd getting PR chances was interesting. He returned 44 punts for a 13.1 yard average at N. Dakota State. Not advocating, just observing. Davis has done that in the NFL.

I think Davis has pretty much locked up a spot from his performance in camp. Even if he were to get injured they'd just put him on pup with a designation if possible.

This was a glorified practice. I am not locking in anyone until they have played games. People we know are ascending and descending.and others are emerging (Shepherd being an example). Much to play out yet.

Also, flicking back to rewatch, Kizer and Boyle were given an impossible task. Our 2nd O line was just desperately bad individually and as a group. Sadly, Jenkins may have been the worst of the lot. These players looked just not ready yet.

We need to see Kizer and Boyle behind the ones before we judge them. I am dialing back some excitement over Summers (not his athleticism), but that line was just not going to stop granny. Kizer’s first interception (stare down) all on him: Boyle’s major overthrow the same, the rest was significantly muddied by the O line play.

TGR, another great recap! The most important result from family night is no additional injuries. Way to stay healthy guys! Sounds like J'mon Moore is still hurting his chances with dropped passes.
Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

The performance of the WRs/OL sounds positive. Which also means the performance of the secondary doesn't sound great...

Didn't hear Burks name much.

I was watching, and the OL wasnt as good as it sounded in team drills. Obviously there was lots of personnel changes and backup reps, but there were several would be sacks that were escaped or allowed a throw away because the no-tackle rule. We'll see more in the preseason, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the backup QBs running around on a few drives.

There were 14 tweets about the Offensive and Defensive line. 2 were positive for the offensive line, 11 were positive for the defensive line, and one just noted that Pankey was taking snaps for Bulaga.

There were three more about 1 x 1 drills, which were mixed but not too bad for the offensive line.

Burks was mentioned and did make some plays. He wasn’t in against the seconds and thirds which is when Summers made a splash.

It was good to see the packers again. They upgraded this roster with more height , weight and speed. The one thing that sticks out is the physical style and intensity of this team. Time will tell and the packers have given MLF a good first team to work with.

Herman asked would you take a 4th round draft choice for either Jmon or ESB in order to keep Kumerow and Davis?

I think too early in camp yet to decide but boy that would be a hard decision as both those guys need at minimum 2 full seasons to evaluate and most would say 3 full seasons minimum under their belt for a WR. Jmon and ESB have tremendous upside. To prove my point it has taken Davis until his 4th training camp to evolve into what appears a good WR. It has taken Kumerow much longer.

I know Kumerow is a camp darling as the try hard blue collar local boy. Somehow I too want them to keep him with the Packers. He is a everything we fans want as a Packer representing the organization. Kumerow is at his peak right now and there will unlikely be much more if any further elevation of his game. Davis will now unmistakenly has made the team. There never was an issue as a returner only with his WR capabilities and he answered those questions this summer. Basically, what Herman is asking do you sacrifice WR's with more long-term talent and upside in order to keep Kumerow?

I would definitely consider a 4th for Jmon who is a raw talent but if the Pack did it would acknowledge they made a mistake. Jmon along with Adam's are the most athletic WR's, and Jmon undeniably has a huge upside. There are positive reports about Jmon coming out of camp but are they really representative of his play? I would not trade ESB for a 4th under any circumstances nor would I keep Kumerow over him as I think he has stardom capabilities.

Neither MVS, ESB, or even Allison are receiving nearly the opportunities that Davis and Kumerow are receiving so far in camp, particularly during Family Night. Am I just imaging that or are the Packers intentionally auditioning them (and possibly Jmon) to make some hard decisions?

By the way, I am very excited about Ty Summers, Tonyan, ESB, MVS, Brown, and Dexter William's and possibly Jmon. I think these players as low round draftee's and FA's have real upside potential to go along with other young talent on the team.

I have been a big advocate of J’mon on the basis of potential. I still remain so, but the fact is that when you have a player who has a steep learning curve to grasp the NFL systems (as he did), it is a first a question of will the ability flash. There is no doubt that he has flashed what he can do on routes, made difficult catches and shown his ability after the catch in camp.

The next question is whether that shows up in games and the final one is whether that has become the norm.

J’mon has reached stage one of 3. It is equally clear that he did not show that he has reached stage 2 on family night. He has to do that over the coming 4 games. If he does, the Packers have an interesting question.

Do they keep a potential future starter or do they keep a ceiling wide receiver 3-5, In my book, we are loaded with current 3-5s (Allison, EQ, Kumerow, Davis, Shepherd).

At that point The question becomes do I see potential for the future in these players and do I need that many this year. My analysis suggests that Kumerow, Allison and Davis are probably at or near their ceiling. Do I benefit from all 3. EQ will continue to develop I suspect.

At this point, Adams, Allison and MVS appear to be the three most likely to see the field. Behind them, EQ and Kumerow can probably step in adequately for any of those 3 in the event of injury. Do I need that many?

In my view, trading Allison is a reasonable option. I would not worry if EQ or Kumerow were to fill that role. I keep EQ (upside) and Kumerow (assumed lowered trade value due to age/lack of games). If Moore can be an adequate backup depth while he develops I keep his upside.

Davis is another that we could trade based upon return ability and camp performance. He has one year on his deal. If Shepherd shows as a returner as he has on O, arguably we only need one. Take youth, cost and upside every time for a 4+ receiver.

Redding and Lazard to the PS in any scenario where a trade is made.

Coldwell,
Good analysis!

I know Gutey has to look at all the points you mention when making roster decisions. Both for now as well as long-term.

The Ty summers LB is a really good player. He is big , fast and physical and he fits Pettines scheme. His ability to blitz and weave through traffic is the key ,he finds the ball. TCU runs a 4-2-5 defense and Gary Patterson is a great defensive coach and he gets the most out of players.

I'd rather have Shep make the 53 then Moore... He can go in for Davis on returns when he gets hurt... And he has good hands... Shep is the guy in pounding the table to make this roster.
