Cory's Corner: Deepest Wideout Room In NFC North

The Packers wide receivers are the the deepest in the NFC North. And it isn't particularly close.

The Packers have incredible depth at wide receiver. How good you may ask?

Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are the best team of wideouts in the NFC North. And that doesn’t even count Bo Melton who earned his stripes last year after spending some time on the practice squad.

The Vikings certainly have the best top tier talent. Justin Jefferson could make an argument as a top three wideout and Jordan Addison caught 10 touchdowns as a rookie last year. But after that, the Vikings are grasping at straws. Brandon Powell is on his sixth team and Trishton Jackson, Jailen Nailor and Trent Sherfield Sr. will need name tags when training camp starts because nobody will know any of those guys.

Then there are the Bears. Chicago has to have a lot go right with this crew. They are counting on a lot of things to go right in their wide receiver room if they want to be at the top of this list. Their No. 1 wideout of DJ Moore is solid as evidenced by five solid seasons in Carolina with pathetic quarterback play. Then there’s 32-year-old Keenan Allen. Chicago is hoping that he can turn back the hands of time and add a little spring to his step. He hasn’t played a full season since 2021 but he caught a career-high 108 passes last year. The Bears are hoping that Allen can pull a carbon copy and do that again. Then there’s rookie first rounder Rome Odunze. He’s 6-foot-3 and looks the part but again, he’s a rookie, so expectations should be tempered.

The Lions are similar to the Vikings. Amon-Ram St. Brown is probably a top three wideout even with an average Jared Goff at quarterback. Then there’s Jameson Williams. He had huge expectations as a pro electrifying fans at Alabama. But he tore his left ACL in the 2022 national title game. The expectations are sky high for him, and for the Lions that took him with the 12th overall pick in 2022. Kalif Raymond is on his seventh team as a 29-year-old and Donovan Peoples-Jones put up decent numbers for Cleveland but his production nosedived after 2022. And the expectations for Tom Kennedy and Antoine Green are to just make any impact whatsoever — whether that’s as a wideout or on special teams.

The Packers are five deep. That is absolutely crazy. You could make an argument that Watson, Doubs and Wicks could be a No. 1 wideout on a different team. Yes, Watson is technically still the No. 1 on this team, but it doesn’t really matter. Reed is sensational on third down. Doubs has great staccato movements and solid route running. Tben there’s Melton, who will drop jaws at training camp this summer. And I didn’t even get a chance to mention Malik Heath.

A lot has been made about top shelf wideouts in the last few years. But if we’ve learned anything from the last couple drafts, it’s that you can build and assemble quality wideouts without breaking the bank or using a first round pick.

And there are still people who want to add Brandon Aiyuk or CeeDee Lamb as the #1 WR.

Not that I want them to add Aiyuk but I will say that at the time I wanted the Packers to draft him. And I believe the Packers wanted to draft him but when the Niners took him they moved up to get Love. I do not know if the Packers tried to trade up ahead of the Niners and could not make a deal work or where they would have taken him if the Niners did not take him.

No way we need to get a veteran after last season. These guys showed they can play ball so let them play.

It was a bad move to trade up and get Love they should have traded up for Aiyuk, we would have to pay him a lot less than Love. More cap space, ~

I'm out of practice. This is the first offseason in a long-long time where there hasn't been at least a semi-clamor for a better WR. It was nice.

They don't need a number 1. Any one of the receivers we have can be a number one on a given day. Keep the defense guessing.

Unrelated topic, but the Packer Board just voted to promote Ed Policy to CEO after Murphy retires. Policy is a lawyer and runs the non-football side of the Packers. Maybe Gute gets the chance to be a full powered GM after Policy takes over since Policy is not a football guy. I hope so.......

This Packer offense has the high potential of being one of the very best in the league this year. Think 2011 Packers and you may be close, though this team will be able to run it better than that team could. We saw glimpses last year, even against good defensive teams. I think the Pack will average 30 points a game and many of our receivers, TE's included will become nationally prominent. GPG!

Pro Tip: Memorize any five sentences from this article. Waltz to your favorite fast food restaurant (or post office, DMV, etc) choose the longest line, and occasionally blurt out one of your sentences. Big voice. Project! I'm going with:

-The Lions are similar to the Vikings.

-Then there’s Jameson Williams.

-How good you may ask?

-But he tore his left ACL in the 2022 national title game.

-That is absolutely crazy.

I'm hoping for a nice, 72 hour mental health commitment in the sweet air conditioned confines of the fourth floor.

Does it ever feel to you like we're living in a giant stupid simulation. I knew there was going to be a problem when I was offered the red pill and the blue pill and I reached out and took them both. Old habits die hard

That seems like a lot of work. Why not just use the old standby, "my poop smells funny." You only have to say it to three or four random strangers before they fit you that nice white jacket.

Watson needs to prove he can stay on the field and I would not under-appreciate the caliber of WR talent on all 3 teams; ie., Minnie, Detroit and Chicago.

IMO, opposing teams did not completely respect Green Bay last year and played accordingly. I am certain defensive coordinators are currently paying attention, studying film and game-planning. Green Bay now has a target on their backs and Jordan Love is completely aware of the increased pressure. It's a new game.

I agree about Watson. I also agree that we need to not take the NFC North foes for granted. Remember that is one of the reason we hired a new DC.

Vikings have 4 good receivers and one of them is the TE and another is an aging RB and no one to throw the ball to them.

Lions do not have depth but yes if healthy they can give us a game.

Just like Watson cannot stay healthy Allen for the Bears cannot stay healthy so that is a scratch. They have a rookie QB throwing the ball.

I like our chances for taking the division.

I am sure MLF is changing things up and the DCs we face will not be prepared for the changes.

I have a theory that no WR can outperform his QB. If this is true, then the WRs in Chicago and Minnesota are at a real disadvantage.

Also, when you only have one or two weapons in the passing game, these guys can put up bigger stats than better receivers on stronger teams.

The stat that speaks loudest to me on this is the 32 TD passes we caught last year. 3rd highest total in the league, which was led by Dallas (36). Detroit was just below us. Who has the best receiving group? The team that has the most TD passes.

Top 3 in the NFL last year: Dallas, SF, GB. Look at the receiving corps of those teams.

"I have a theory that no WR can outperform his QB."

I was just about to type something to this extent. The QB makes the WRs...just as a great QB can elevate decent WRs to look really good, a sub-par QB will suppress the quality of his pass-catchers.

We all know that a truly elite pass catcher can make a QB look better. Similarly an elite corps overall can do the same. There are exceptions to the ceiling being set by the talent of the QB.

@LH-It will be fun to test your 'capable QB' theory. I also think a capable receiver and OC can elevate a less capable QB.

(I think many of us are looking forward to watching the Caleb Williams show-lol)

-I still think 'Big Mike' was a bit too relaxed and didn't really prepare for little ol' GB.

Now draft 2 more in mid rounds in 2025 to keep the line of deep and cheap WR room. With all the respect to outstandng duo of Rodgers and Adams I think we've had enough of connection between QB and alpha receiver.

A buddy of mine and I used to wrestle on the indy circuit as a tag team called “Deep and Cheap”, before really hitting our stride as “Vicious and Delicious”.

But I digress. I’d wager a DC would rather face a team with one “A+” receiver and a handful of ‘C” guys, than to try to defend a team with “B+” receivers all over the field.

If your Alpha can be shut down then there is a big problem. It’s very hard to shut down an elite player at his peak, but we lost a chance at a Super Bowl when the 49ers did just that. Was it because the rest of the skill players could not step up, or because we couldn’t break out of the alpha mindset and use them?

If we have 5 catchers active out there who can beat you, there surely is no better position to be in. Unfortunately that’s extremely rare and the cap makes such eras brief. It’s possible this year that our WRs and TEs could actually be good enough to be that though, especially if LaFleur manages personnel and match ups optimally. Thats exciting. Let’s enjoy it while the cap allows it.
