How Will the Packers Handle the Absence of Jayden Reed?

The Green Bay Packers got some bad news after their 27-18 win over the Washington Commanders. Wide receiver Jayden Reed suffered a broken collarbone while making a catch in the end zone. The injury will require surgery. Reed is expected to miss approximately two months. If that timetable holds true, he won’t return to the field until mid-November. So, the Packers receiving depth will be tested, but the team seems well equipped to handle this situation.

Reed led the Packers in catches in each of the last two seasons. He did that despite playing only 56 percent of the offensive snaps in 2023 and 63 percent in 2024. Reed operates primarily out of the slot.

The Packers have some alternatives when looking to replace Reed’s productivity. The team still has five active wide receivers on the current roster. Romeo Doubs and Matthew Golden will likely continue to start, and both could see more playing time without Reed in the lineup. Doubs has been a steady productive player thus far this season.

Golden appears to still be learning and adjusting to the NFL game. He did not catch any passes against the Commanders and still needs to learn how to consistently get open against NFL defenses. The talent and work ethic are there, but could the loss of Reed for the next two months force him to try to accelerate the learning curve? The Packers also could shift Golden to the slot to replace Reed in that specific role and then move a different receiver to the boundary.

The same can be said for Savion Williams. Like Golden, head coach Matt LaFleur is trying to get the third-round pick out of TCU the football in different ways. Right now, Williams has been running jet sweeps or end arounds. He also officially has one catch, but it was closer to a running play in design and execution. Again, Williams will need time to be ready to play a larger role in the offense this season and may not be ready right now to contribute much more than what he’s already doing.

Dontayvion Wicks could step in and assume a larger role in the offense. Wicks currently leads all the team’s wideouts with six catches through two games. While it remains a small sample size, the Virginia alum has not dropped a pass in either of the first two games. Dropped passes were a big issue for Wicks last season when pro-football-reference.com credited him with nine.

Malik Heath may also step up and see more game action. Heath wasn’t seeing many snaps on offense before the injury to Reed. Against Washington, he came up with an impressive 37-yard catch that was initially ruled out of bounds. That was overturned after replay clearly showed Heath did an acrobatic job of getting both his feet in bounds.

Heath has experience and knows the offense. He also has good size and blocking ability, two things the Packers like to see from their wide receivers. It is likely Heath will see more snaps as long as Reed remains sidelined, although how many more will depend on his performance.

The Packers also could look to their practice squad for help. Veteran Mecole Hardman remains would be a good candidate to step in for Reed. First, Hardman has extensive experience in the NFL, having already played six seasons, mostly with the Chiefs. He’s also been a part of three Super Bowl winning teams and can return both kickoffs and punts.

Hardman also has usually operated out of the slot during his time in Kansas City and could easily step in and take reps there with the Packers. He should be familiar with the offense after spending all of training camp and the preseason with the team. He had a rough first preseason game but looked better after that when called upon.

The Packers could simply elevate Hardman from the practice squad next Sunday in Cleveland, but they do run the risk of another team signing him off the practice squad if a need arises at wide receiver on their roster.

Also available on the practice squad right now are Will Sheppard and Isaiah Neyor. Neither has NFL experience or fits the typical size of a slot receiver, but both had strong performances in training camp and could be elevated for a game or two if necessary.

Of course, the other unknown here is how soon Christian Watson will return from the PUP list. He still needs to sit out at least two more games, but if he returns for Week 5, it may make more sense for the Packers to elevate a player for the next two games and just insert Watson into the lineup when he’s ready. If he’s going to miss substantially more time than that, placing another wide receiver on the 53-man roster would make a lot more sense.

The Packers may also utilize their tight ends more in the passing game. Tucker Kraft was the team’s top target against Washington and Luke Musgrave is capable of getting downfield.

The old adage in the NFL when injuries hit is “next man up.” We’ll see who the next man up for the Packers will be at wide receiver and how well they perform. At least the way the current roster is structured, the team has some different options to consider.

This depth is not an accident. Again, Gutekunst has shown that working with LaFleur results in a team that has several players that could be the "next man up". This reminds me of the Holmgren years, when someone would be injured, and the replacement would be up to the job.

For all those who wanted to trade Doubs, this is why you don't. You better start the season with at least 5 legit NFL caliber receivers. I'd think Christian Watson will be back by week 6-8 and Reed by week 10. Golden will get more experience and I think begin to contribute more, Doubs and Wicks are good. I love Tucker Kraft. Most importantly, we may have the best defense in the league.

Savion Williams.
It's easy to forget or discount him, but that's because he was injured most of the preseason. LaFleur made several comments early on about how impressed they were with his learning of the offense and his athletic ability.
I think he's going to break out in a big way.

Obviously, all of the other WRs are going to get their shots in the slot as well, but Williams has the potential to be a superstar there.

I greatly look forward to seeing Savion on the field together with #9 and 0. That gives us 2 WRs at 6'4" and 2 with elite speed. Go ahead and figure out how you're supposed to cover that, lol. While we can still have #8 and 85 on the field at the same time.

Really sucks that #11's TD catch he broke his collar bone on was called back, hope he isn't demoralized by that. Don't know why MLF didn't have Kinnard in? Still a W.

I don't want to see Reed in a game 7 weeks from now. If he could start practicing in limited fashion that fast that would be amazing, and still give him time to ramp back up to getting 100% by the playoffs when we really need him. It might even give his Jones fracture time to heal?

LeFleur showed quite a bit of confidence in Savion Williams by running the Wildcat play where he took the snap and made a nice gain. He may have been a little over exited because he slipped down trying to cut back.

But it let me know LeFluer trusts him to handle the ball. That play will give future opponents something to plan for. Opens up some other possibilities.

Elevate Hardman and fast track the development of Golden. Love already has excellent chemistry with Doubs and Wicks has been very solid so far. We should be able to handle this.

A smaller concern would be punt return duties since our defense is forcing a lot them (yay!). If we elevate Hardman, pray that he does a better job than he showed in preseason. I don't think we want to chance Golden any more in this role.

I agree that bringing Hardman in makes sense. Whether that's signing him or elevating him is the question. It gives the luxury of not having to rush the development of our 2 rookies but letting them learn well at their own pace, and being used as MLF prefers.

First round draft picks (non-QB) should be ready to go when the need arises. They already inserted Belton when a need arose, so it should be no different with Golden. Williams probably belongs in the latter category, though.

"First round draft picks (non-QB) should be ready to go when the need arises."

Should be doesn't mean they will be. If the player isn't ready, don't play them would be my thoughts. Put your best out there regardless of whether they are a rookie or vet. Give them some PT when the game is in hand.

I would expect Wicks and Golden to be the primary beneficiaries. Both can play in the slot and outside and are, with Doubs, the remaining top of the depth chart that is often only starting 2, one of which is usually Doubs. If they elevate Hardman (as seems likely) to handle punts, then he may get a few opportunities too at what is his natural position. If not, if Melton is healthy, perhaps he gets a few opportunities. Slot is a role where we are deep enough to have credible options.

More 12 personnel and involving the RBs in the passing game to help offset Reed's absence...he's a big loss.

It is strange how well the OL pass blocks while it barely gets any push during run blocking. JJ has to mostly create yards on his own.

I believe the OL coaches emphasize pass blocking more than they do run blocking. I was expecting Banks, Jenks, Rhyan would bring more horse power to the inside run game. Not yet.

Exactly, LP. The Packers need to replace catches and yards and first downs; they do not to replace the slot receiver. Two TEs will get catches in the area a slot receiver normally attacks.

Heath made a nice block on the Williams around the edge run near the end of the 2nd qtr, and so did Kraft. Heath's performance was really good in the game, and I would expect to be the primary beneficiary. I think Wicks also had a nice block on tyhe second-half end around.

Lots of weapons - and if Lafleur gets the more motion thing going with the Jet sweeps - and if Love can hit Golden or even Doubs or Williams on the long balls if they crowd the line - the deep ball will be there - and I dont mind the fact that Love is overthrowing the ball a bit on those plays because underthrowing caused INT"s before - in stride usually leads to TDs. I just hope that the Watson injury thing is over because - I mean just because.

For what it's worth (not much?), Dontayvion Wicks is listed as the backup slot receiver on the Packers' official depth chart. If they want to go with experience, he's the guy. On the other hand, I love the idea of just plugging Matthew Golden into that role. He's almost the exact height and weight as Reed, and runs just as fast, but he's more elusive than Reed. In addition to taking on Reed's role, Golden could still play some snaps as an outside receiver--a role he is already familiar with. Gil mentions that Golden did not catch any passes against the Commanders but does not mention that he got open deep twice, and with good throws he would've had a monster game with two TDS and something like 130 yards receiving. He is fully ready to play wide receiver in the NFL. The question is how fast he can learn to play in the slot, if they choose to put him there.

I suspect the Packers will use a mixture of Wicks, Golden, and Savion Williams to replace Reed. This will lead to more opportunities for Malik Heath, and maybe they will elevate Mecole Hardman from the practice squad and give him a few snaps as well. I'm leery of Hardman as a punt returner after watching his butchery of those duties in the first preseason game. I would be okay with Golden returning punts.

It would be nice to see more Golden. Or Williams. Or Heath.

Kraft is our leading receiver, followed by Doubs and Wicks. We have Musgrave, Golden, and Williams. That's not a bad group of targets. We'll get Watson back.

The REAL season doesn't start until Thanksgiving, when you have the stretch run for the playoffs. If you're .500 at that point, you're in the hunt. I hope that Reed, and Watson, are back in time for the stretch run. These are useful guys when you're trying to win football games.

I'd be surprised if GB doesn't go 6-0. I expect to be well above .500 by Thanksgiving. Trap game coming up? I think this team is hungry enough to learn from their mistakes even in a win, and not phone it in against Cleveland who can still hurt you. I love our HC right now! He's honest about both a good start to the season and SO much work to do, cleaning up sloppy mistakes.

Reed was a good weapon and we're going to miss what he brings.

Until he's back, what's The Plan? Doubs, Wicks, and Golden are going to have to play. Heath and Williams should get more snaps. If we play double TE, then Musgrave could get more time on the field while we only play two WRs.

I think playing Doubs and Wicks, along with Musgrave and Kraft, probably puts our best 4 man weapon group on the field.

And we'll run more and pass less. Any of those adjustments can replace what he brought. Remember, last season, when healthy-ish, he only had 75 targets. That's less than 5 targets per game. That's replaceable, at least in the short term.

We're about one injury away from a pretty weak group. When is Watson coming back?

}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Ironically, our downfall in the playoffs last year also featured a lot of injuries at the WR spot. We're right back where we started from.

I'm not so sure this is an issue.

With no #1 wr that gets the majority of targets, the Packers success has been wr by committee.
With the drops down (so far) this season, that just strengthens my point.

MLF has been doing a fabulous job of scheming these receivers open, and a good majority, are WIDE open.

In a lot of ways, all these 2025 collection of receivers are a gift from Gute.
I remember in 2020 Rodgers having Adams, Tonyan, MVS and Lazard.
Not exactly the wr riches of the NFL sans Adams.

Rodgers threw for 4.300 yards, and won MVP that season at 36 years old.

I think Love and the pass offense should be just fine.

The number one receiver in the nfl old news

I want a different one every game.

That’s when you win.

As far as Rogers yah he’s great he did a lot with less.

But when he had Jennings driver jones. Etc. we won a Super Bowl

Rogers gave Doubs and Watson a good start in life.

They may have not like his perfection he wanted but with that said Doubs does great back shoulder catches and Rogers loved Watson one on one

When he was 3 TDS vs Dallas.

No team dares to go one on one with him .

He was the least likely WR to make it to the 53 based on WR talent, that's at least a part of the reason they decided to flip him to CB.

I would expect Savion Williams or Malik Heath to pick up more offensive snaps due to Reed's absence before Melton.

The number one receiver will change every game.

Musgrave will have good games as they look at Kraft

Health one of my favorites will get more opportunities always great catches.

Wicks is open more than a seven eleven. Open 24 hours a day

Golden will get in the mix soon to get Golden opportunities.

Doubs just gets it done.

Watson when he’s back with Golden on the field together. .I might have a heart attack.

Jacob’s pure stud. Leader. Etc etc etc

Wilson Brooks needs some more opportunities

Lloyd get back and run some old pitch plays off tackle for 7 or 8 yards a crack

Defense

I get more excited than. Well I better not say my favorite saying on here

Gary playing his best football
LVN turning it up
Williams and X real good jobs

Bullard go it going Thursday

D Wyatt learned a few things from Kenny and playing real good under DeMarcus

Quay what can I say. Having a good season playing excited

Hobbs will get a pick next game

The more we win the more other teams coming after you.

Need to win all 10 at home this year. 8 regular season 2 playoff games.

Back of the season gets tougher. One game at a time.

Reed played about 60% of the snaps (around 40) and got 5 targets. We can simply redistribute the targets, giving one more touch to Jacobs/Wilson, one more target to Kraft, one more touch to Savion Williams, one more target to Golden, one more target to Heath , etc.

On the plays where he isn't the target, he's either blocking, or clearing out. That's about 35 snaps that have to be made up......Golden, Williams, Heath will have to fill that void.
