Gutekunst Can't Fall for Fool's Gold in 2025

Packers' GM needs to just verify what he's already seen in Indianapolis.

The 2025 NFL Combine is upon us, and like you, I am absolutely stoked about the seemingly endless number of data points we are about to receive in such a short time.

The interviews and medical have already concluded, now all that's left is just for the players to show teams that they are the league's next future star.

But while there will be plenty of "ohs and ahs" about who runs what in the 40 and 3-cone. But my eyes will be trained on one Brian Gutekunst, General Manager of the Green Bay Packers.

We know Brian and the Scouting Department love guys who test well, and I'm sure we will get plenty of traffic on guys who test out of the water. But as many of you have seen in the past, sometimes what you see in shorts doesn't necessarily equate to what will be seen in pads. I'm very lukewarm on this draft class and have yet to assign any Gems this offseason. When it's all said and done, the excitement will last well beyond the 1st Round, with some selections that might catch the more casual fan unaware. It is my hope, that Gutekunst especially prioritizes the tape in 2025, and not let the Combine muddy his evaluation.

"Traits, traits, traits." You've heard that a lot already I'm sure, and you'll continue to hear it til we hear Mr. Irrelevant called for 2025. But unfortunately, based on what I've seen so far, that's what the majority of this class is....just "traits". Are there some future All-Pros and Pro Bowlers to find? Of course. You'll also find some really solid players who would be a welcome addition to any roster as well. You won't need the Combine to know who those folks are. Gutekunst has certainly taken his lumps in the Draft over the course of his tenure but I'm hopeful that because this particular class isn't "loaded" he may be forced to save himself from himself and take the "safe" pick.

What is safe? I'm talking about "high floor" prospects, guys who may never be considered elite but have rock-solid starting potential. I do agree with Brian that you should never chase another team, only worry about yourselves. The Packers are still a very young yet very talented team. For that talent to mature, some curated selections that push the current guys on the roster are needed. In the press conference, Gutekunst spoke about how quickly guys are matriculating to the league, I'd prefer if he reinforces that trend with some Edgerrin Cooper/Tucker Kraft-like selections in 2025.

Speaking of, what about those prospects? Let's dive into a few.

QB

Gutekunst did say he wanted to get back into developing QBs, and it would not surprise me to see him take one late on Day 3. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pay close attention to Jalen Milroe, whose disastrous showing in the Senior Bowl still comes with the pro-comp of our beloved Malik Willis. The QB class is concerningly thin, so it would not shock me to see a team that missed out on either Sanders, Ward, or Ewers to inquire with the Packers about Willis' services. As the old saying goes, the best time to draft a QB is when you don't need one.....

RB

The Packers are all but set at the RB position going into 2025, even if 2024 3rd Rounder Marshawn Lloyd is a relative unknown to those outside of 1265. I'm really super bummed to be honest, because the chance to see Bhayshul Tuten, Devin Neal, or Jaydon Blue in the Green and Gold has me hyped. While Josh Jacobs is no slouch, I'd love to see a little more "Lightning" to complement his "Thunder".

WR

I know, I know, everyone wants a WR, but this class ain't it. Gutekunst may have 2-3 solid stabs if he chooses to elevate the WR Corps. There are plenty of guys who are fast in this group and plenty of guys who have plus length. You won't really see guys who have both outside of maybe TCU's Savion Williams and Tennesee's Dont'e Thornton Jr (need to see ya run first Jayden Higgins). But then you have to deal with Williams being super raw and Thornton not having an adequate sample size to make the proper projection (I still want him though). But if Texas' Matthew Golden just so happens to fall into the Packers' lap on Day 2, I'm not sure Gutekunst can afford to pass that up. There's nothing in my opinion that could be gained in Indy with this WR Class.

TE

Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave have the position in a chokehold, and that Ben Sims guy I like too. But if Iowa's Luke Lachey is hanging around in the 6th or 7th, I'm game. I don't need to see him work out.

OL

The offensive line is the "sneaky need" of 2025. I know Jordan Morgan essentially took a medical redshirt last year but questions abound about Center, and will the real starting Right Guard of the Packers please stand up? That's no dig at Sean Rhyan, I like him too. But I believe that if a guy like USC's Jim Monheim or North Dakota State's Grey Zabel is available; guys who can help the Packers find their "best 5" as they like to call it, they should be priority targets. But if the Packers do decide to go Tackle again, perhaps with the intention of moving Zach Tom inside, a "Mr. Nasty" like Minnesota's Aireontay Ersery, Purdue's Marcus Mbow, Missouri's Armand Membou, or West Virginia's Wyatt Milum would be truly transformative for the offense. Let's trust the tape, measure their arms (because that does matter), and make our pick.

DL

Despite what some may think, I really think the defensive line will really take off, in year 2 of Jeff Hafley's defensive scheme. If there was a time to take a flyer on a traits guy, it's with this position group. The Longhorns' Alex Collins could be a project that's worthwhile in about 3 years, and Florida State's Josh Farmer too. They will both test very well, but we knew that before we got here.

LB

Yuck. This is where Gutekunst has to just find a "football player" if he's going to let Eric Wilson and Isaiah McDuffie walk. I'm "comfortable" with Alabama's Jihaad Campell.  I am starting to fall in love with Oklahoma State's Nick Martin (probably too small) however, and if UCLA's Carson Scwessinger or South Carolina's Demetrius Knight Jr. run well they should be in play. Georgia's Smael Mondon Jr as a project for late Day 3 could be an interesting depth piece. Out of all the position groups with the most to gain, it's the LBs. If a guy with ok or good but not great tape tests well, we may come out of this with some additional targets. But the tape HAS to be there.

DB

I came away from the Senior Bowl thinking Oklahoma's Billy Bowman Jr. MIGHT can play a little nickel...prove me wrong. But Virginia Tech's Dorian Strong should ABSOLUTELY be a target. I'm not convinced on Florida State's Azareye'h Thomas until I see him run. Texas' Jahdae Barron and Notre Dame's Benjamin Morrison will also utilize the Combine to decide where they stand in the pecking order when it's time to make the pick This is probably the only position this year where Gutekunst should put a little emphasis on testing, as CB is probably the second hardest position in the league and its rare (Xavier McKinney) that those who don't test well find success.

ST

Notre Dame's Jack Kiser (leadership/IQ), Auburn's Eugene Asante (athleticism), Oregon's Jabbar Muhammad, and Illinois' Fadill Diggs (both better than average) are guys who might wait awhile during the Draft but would likely add value to any franchise on the back end.

The theme of this year's 2025 NFL Combine needs to be "high floor", aka the "safe" guys. Granted there's no guarantee what these players might become, but I do believe the "right" competition is needed to elevate this Packers roster to make a push for another Lombardi Trophy. The Packers don't have many holes honestly, but what is needed are a "few good men" who may see reps sooner than later, or at least push the guys ahead of them to maximize their talents while on the field. We've still got a long way to the Draft folks, but at least now the picture is starting to get just a bit more clearer. I'll see you guys on the other end of the Combine as we look to crown our first 2025 Gem.

This is a solid breakdown of the Packers' potential draft strategy. Prioritizing "high-floor" prospects over pure traits makes sense, especially in a class that lacks elite depth.

I think it's time to prioritize some nasty, too.

I think it's time to prioritize healthy.

Morgan missed half the season. Alexander and Stokes and Savage all missed significant time. Watson. Wyatt.

When you're spending top picks on guys who can't stay on the field, then maybe you need to reevaluate a little. I know it's a rough game, and I know people get injured, but the unavailability of high draft picks is a theme with us.

Morgan was'nt injured in College and was an ALL-American. He punched 27 reps and had the 5.04 40yd dash. The arm thing is a joke with a quarter inch off the 33.0 and big mitts. He is a prototypical LT with his mirroring and fast feet. LaFleur played him inside, where he never played in college and got his shoulder torqued out of shape.
Walker is the beast to move inside and protect the pocket guy. Stokes and Savage were mis-fires from draft day forward. Savage cost two fourth rounders and he didn't bag Jacobs, or Montez Sweat. I see no causal relationship, unless the Player carried a serious college injury history into the Draft.

My personal wish list regardless of round. Just guys I would love to see in a packer uniform. No particular order.
Grey Zabel - OL - 5 position versatility - could develop into a top center or guard.
Jordan Burch - DL - freaky athlete with production to match.
JJ Pegues - DT - non stop motor. Doubles as a goal line back. Very nimble feet.
Pat Bryant - WR - hands and more hands. For not being an overly fast guy , he gets separation and out runs faster guys with the ball in his hands.
Nohl Williams - CB - Ballhawk with good size. Return capability as well.
Jay Higgins - LB - fantastic coverage/ ball skills. Would be a perfect compliment to Cooper and Quay.
Don't really expect to get any of them, but it would make my day.

Nice list Joseph. Are you involved with the draft guide in any way? If not, Al should be drafting up your services. I'll make sure to look back at this after these guys run, as it seems that's your main concern with most of them.

If there's no one standing out from the crowd, Gute has to make sure of his O-line and O-line depth first. Can't be like walking off a cliff just because your left guard gets hurt in the first series of a playoff game.

Please, no raw projects in round one. How about a guy who can contribute immediately AND improve over time?

Also curious how much moving around GB will do: trading up or down depending on how the (almighty) board falls.

I don't agree with you.
I'd take QB Dillion Gabriel - Left handed
3 different transfers and systems.
OK -Tuten in the 7th works. If you want a RB.
WR- This class is it. The pack will never
get a Great WR in the top 15 picks.
It's always been the second rd.
And that MVP QB is NO longer in GB.
No TE for me. Not this draft. Buy a FA.
I'll take Wilson Center.
DL is the fools Gold. Gute can't wait 3 yr.
Go big or go Home. I'd sign a FA!
Love Campbell. I'm expecting the edge guys here.
The guys their looking at are around 250 lbs.
CB is the bust area. Most questionable class ever.
Safety- Caleb Ransom Toledo Late.
Expect 2 edge guys.

I'd like to think that when assessing any draft class, the Packers' front office is identifying the positions that lack impact players and recognizing that if those positions are a priority, that those are the places to try to push harder in free agency.

Sadly, CB is a money position and young CBs are few in this FA class, and the WR position in FA lacks what the Packers need. I think OL will be in high demand when FA opens.

The top 5 are always there.
It's a matter of getting the top one.
Especially if the need is there.
Do we have needs?. -Yes / No
We have DEPTH needs.!/ Upgrades.

My belief is Alexander is pushing for a Trade.
If you look at why he was suspended.
And the trade with Buffalo.
The Secondary Voiced their Displeasure.

Truthfully if Gary is regressing, and Van Ess
is the bust. That is the demand.
And Alexander knows it.

Van Ess still has his baby teeth. Does he turn 22 this season some time? Not even close to deciding if he's a bust yet. Let them take the training wheels off first.

Moving his First Pick would be another bump on the Gutey noggin. Jaire should have been moved last off-season, if they couldn't handle his "personalty." If you're counting on either Gary, or the hockey player to be a dynamic presence, you're in trouble. The free agency period will determine where he goes in the draft.

Gabriel is a winner. He can pass all over the field and take off running, if necessary. Have to keep him safe. He's a better version of Willis. The CBs at least play a lot of 1:1 coverage. They don't tackle in College any longer. Tyson Campbell was given a four-year extension; Stokes will be on the street. Wilson at center will be a popular choice for most of the teams selecting guys. He will not fall down the lists.

Very Good on Gabriel.
He's left handed.
Size is why he drops.
IMO - If gute just sticks to
BPA per round. He can't screw the draft up.
What do you think about Robinson DT from Neb?
Every one likes him but he's not on some boards.

Shemar Turner is the guy inside for T-A&M. Josh Farmer from FSU. Ty Hamilton from OSU. Stackhouse from Georgia & Jordan Phillips from Maryland. Big Ten guys know how to be physical. I like Robinson's career. This draft should include at least TWO DTs going to the Pack, if he's paying attention. Fast and Low off the ball and into the QB's lap is the Way.

"The offensive line is the "sneaky need" of 2025."

The OL starters in 2025 are likely already in place unless a draft pick or FA jumps up and impresses. The depth just isn't there, though, and if there's one thing the Philly game showed us, it's that the Packers were fortunate in 2024 that they didn't need to dip into their line depth very much.

In 2016, the Packers drafted Jason Spriggs, an athletic T out of Indiana, to groom as their swing OT and potentially as the heir-apparent to one of their two second-contract OTs (Bakhtiari or Bulaga). Spriggs failed to develop and the Packers cut him loose after the 2019 season (which he spent on IR). That failure forced the Packers to feed a big third contract to Bakhtiari...and we know how that worked out. They also ended up moving Billy Turner out to RT to replace Bulaga, and--while capable--Turner was someone who left Packers fans wanting better.

Note that Jason Spriggs right now is 30 years old. We'd probably be talking about replacing him at this point if he'd turned into a quality player, and very possibly the Packers would have never had to deal with Bakh's lingering contract and availability questions. The whole point of this story is to revisit recent history and how failed depth can have long-lasting impacts on the cap, roster management, and player development.

Swing tackle is a huge need.

I think they need at least 2 (and maybe 3) OL in this draft--an OT with the potential to develop and someone on the interior--to fill out the depth chart and to be guys that give the Packers flexibility in how they handle contracts this upcoming season. If the Packers continue to court massive, underprepared UDFA OTs (Nijman, Jones, Telfort, Tenuta), and hope they're the answer, I don't think it goes well.

At least they need to start with the O-line them maybe the D-line before they worry about anything that doesn't just jump out and fall in their lap. If that happens you can forgive it, but there're no TJ Watts or Justin Jeffersons in this draft, as far as I know, that will be there at 23.

Always enjoy reading your stuff Joseph. An extra thing to consider, is where the sweet spot lies for certain positions.
Going by a lot of mocks on different sites I've done - and mashing them together.

You can get an outstanding DL in round one, like Nolen or Grant. But there should still be good ones in round 2 (Tyliek Williams, Alfred Collins, T.J.Sanders). I'm torn whether to get one in round one or round two, but even in round 3 there could be Omarr Norman-Lott, or maybe Jordan Phillips in the 4th. So many to choose from.

Really talented RBs will fall to rounds 4 and 5 at least.

The best choice among the edge guys looks to me like Ashton Gillotte from Louisville, in round .2

If WR Egbuka is still there at pick 23, I'd imagine he has a strong possibility of breaking the Packers 'rule', "don't get receivers in Rd1".

I'd love to find CB Azareye'h Thomas available in round 2. I wouldn't even complain too much if he was our round 1 pick.....

Making a WAG, I'm predicting drafting DT, WR, CB, in that order, with vets having already been added at Edge (taking a premium individual for big bucks) and at Corner (taking a solid vet). Round 4 could very well be a Center - or a guard if the Packers want to move Elgton Jenkins to Center.

I'm glad someone else mentioned WR Golden--definitely worth a shot if he should fall into the second round, but I don't think he would possibly be available by the time the Packers pick in the second round (barring a trade up).

Many mock drafts have Matthew Golden being taken in the first round. I just looked at one on CBS Sports where Golden is taken at #21 overall by the Steelers--two picks before the Packers. Lots of different opinions out there as always. And that's true not just for the mocks, but for the real draft.

Fools Gold-
Morrison- Hip injury will take time. Knees too.
The DL numbers coming in= show short arms.
Take No tweeners!
The Success rate is much better in Free Agency.

The possibility of a TE is better than WR @23.
The Packers must look beyond Musgrave. (per injury)
And Gute has made many mistakes.(Graham)
I would Love the TE from Penn State.
So if he drops take him. Otherwise it's a NO.
Get A cheap FA.
