Five Pleasant Surprises for the Green Bay Packers Thus Far This Season

The Green Bay Packers have gotten off to an uneven 2-3 start to the 2023 NFL season. This was not unexpected given the young and inexperienced players at skill positions on offense and the transition from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.

But here are five players who have been pleasant surprises thus far for the Packers this year. This list does not include players who have missed significant time due to injuries like Elgton Jenkins or Aaron Jones.

5. Edge Rashan Gary

The surprise concerning Gary is not that he is playing well but that he is playing well this quickly.

The former Michigan star suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Packers Week 9 loss to the Lions a year ago. He was ready to start the season after an intense rehab process over the offseason.

Through five games, Gary has been on a play count. He has only played 107 snaps all season, just 30 percent of the Packers defensive plays. Yet he has recorded 4.5 sacks, seven quarterback hits and five hurries.

Gary could get even better once he’s fully healthy and is no longer taking limited snaps.

4. P Daniel Whelan

Some people were surprised when rookie Daniel Whelan beat out incumbent Pat O’Donnell for the punting job.

Through five games, Whelan has averaged 47.5 yards per punt. He has placed four of his 22 punts inside the opponent’s 20 while recording three touchbacks.

Whelan has also been consistent as a holder for field goals and extra points which was an area that O’Donnell had an edge at entering training camp.

The Packers still need to see that Whelan can kick in the colder weather at Lambeau Field in the second half of the season, but the rookie is off to a good start.

3. CB Rasul Douglas

Entering the season, most of the focus at cornerback was on Jaire Alexander who is the team’s top cover corner. While Alexander has struggled with injuries and some poor performances, Rasul Douglas has played well opposite him.

Douglas has one interception this season. He has one fumble recovery and one tackle for loss while making 22 total tackles. The former West Virginia star has also broken up six passes.

Douglas may not be a shutdown corner like Alexander, but he is consistently good and has played well this season.

The Packers need Douglas to continue to play well even after Eric Stokes returns to the lineup.

2. K Anders Carlson

Kicker Anders Carlson had a tough challenge on his hands. He was replacing Mason Crosby, one of the more popular players on the team and the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.

Carlson struggled throughout training camp and the preseason. He made a 57-yard field goal in one preseason game but also missed multiple extra points. He also struggled during training camp and frequently missed many of his kicks.

But since the regular season has started, Carlson has been extremely consistent and accurate. The former Auburn star has hit on all seven of his field goal tries including a 52-yard effort in the season opening win over the Bears.

He has also made all 10 extra point attempts including a clutch PAT late in the fourth quarter that provided the margin of victory in the Pack’s 18-17 comeback win over the Saints in Week 3.

Carlson has also done well at kicking off with 58.3 percent of his kickoffs going for touchbacks.

While Carlson was a major concern going into the season, at the bye week he seems to be the least of the Packers worries.

1. S Rudy Ford

Entering the season, safety was considered the biggest question mark for the Green Bay defense. Thus far, the safety play has been a pleasant surprise.

Rudy Ford has made two interceptions this season, one in each of the last two games. He has also broken up four passes and made 35 total tackles which places him second on the team.

According to pro-football-reference.com, opposing quarterbacks have only completed 52.9 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by Ford this season and their quarterback rating is just 47.8.

Those are impressive numbers for a player who has become a full-time starter for the first time in his NFL career this season.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Since the end of the 2022 season, the Packers have improved in a multitude of ways. Our salary cap situation is more manageable, we're not dependent on a 40 year old (injured) QB, we have an extra second round pick in the next draft.....

We will eventually learn not to keep beating ourselves. In the meantime, it's great to see these guys like Ford getting it done for us.

Gary: Amazing recovery, and great production with such limited playing time. A lot of people like myself assumed he was soft-spoken, but one of his teammates stated he was actually loud and a vocal leader. I wonder when he will get extended?

Whelan: I'm glad the holding wasn't overlooked as that has been a source of discussion of the past couple seasons.

Carlson: I thought he'd get a lot more opportunities, but alas, the offense has stalled on too many occasions.

Ford: This is really good news. Maybe this means we'll have to draft only one safety relatively high because we'll surely need to be concentrating on offensive players.

I might throw Savage and Brooks in there for the next tier. And by season's end, we're going to need to see a couple of pleasant overall surprises on the offensive side of the ball to show we've made some progress here.

This says more about what's wrong with the Packers, players wise, than it does good.

A punter, a kicker, and two guys who have already proved themselves as a value to the team. Five of five should be different players, which would tell me that they are growing/improving their particular phases of the game, and themselves. I understand the kicking game is important, but the real growth/surprises needs to be from elsewhere.

A surprise is getting something you don't already have. Yes, the kickers are nice to see do well, but neither is fixing what ails this team, so where's the surprise(s) that matter. It's a bucket of cold water for deniers.

""A surprise is getting something you don't already have""

I always thought that a surprise was like a lump in a fart. It changes things, and not always in a good way.

Besides a turd coming out of your ass that you didn't feel coming, why is Gary a surprise when you have already seen his plat to a level that is now an expected, not expectation, yes , there is a difference, and is now looking for a big deal. Campbell and Ford have upped their game, but is it really 'surprising, no, it's just above par of what they've previously given.

Pay more attention to what comes out of ass, and maybe your mind will clear.

Gary is a surprise since he came back strong and much earlier than thought from his knee injury.

Musgrave and Kroft playing much, much better would be nice surprises.

Winter weather can make some kickers look worse than they are, and that shouldn't be a surprise, either.

"5 of 5 should be different players"?

You really believe Rashan Gary should be replaced? On pace for 15 sacks, Pro Bowl level, and you want a different guy?

On the list of surprises, yes. He isn't a surprise, he's a should/expected. He's a FA next year looking for a big deal, what is surprising?

I get your point.

Rasheed Walker....I never thought he'd be our starting OT for the first six games of the season.

Rudy Ford....he had a spotty training camp and the usual suspects were talking about how bad he was.

If you were one of the people shoveling dirt on Savage, then you'd include him on the list of surprises because he's played fairly well.

Gary is going to be resigned. We're going to get 9 good years out of Gary before we don't have him under contract. He's one of the very best players in the league at his position, just like Alexander and Clark.

Alexander is overrated and Clark runs hot and cold.

Packers fans always take the best on the team and extrapolate to 'best in the league'.

Fans can be forgiven, they are fans, short for fanatic. When the FO falls for the same nonsense and doles out hefty contracts to above average players that are regarded as best in the league you end up with a mediocre team and salary cap issues.

Just a quick history lesson... you can fill in the other names, if you have been a fan for a while and have been paying attention and use some hindsight, you will see...

Well, let's just say we have different standards. You expect the guy to dominate a game, and I see a guy who's 9 or 10 months off major knee surgery and putting up pro-bowl numbers while working part-time.

I've got a 6th surprise. This year's piss poor offensive line. Basic & fundamental blocking is non-existent. Keep blocking like this, run & pass this team won't win another game this year.

A 7th surprise is this team's passive non-aggressive attitude.

The offense takes a good old-fashioned ass kicking and totally accepts it. Non-violent, passive. No respect from teams. Absolutely nothing to fear. Getting a mouth smashing very acceptable. No pride. No fight. Woke. WTF.

Every training camp video I seen was filled with scenes of the players dancing around showing off there dance club routine skills. I always thought to myself how guys like Reggie would have set them straight. I brought this up a couple of months ago and a few guys ridiculed me, they thought I was just old and crotchety. I said this team was going to get punched in the mouth by a tough team that was serious about winning. I guess if your one of those youngsters or news guys that cover the Packers that like to see the Packers goofin around out on the practice field, you now have the kind of team you like so much.

The surprises are very nice. Given these surprises however one would expect the W-L record to be better. But there has been some disappointments for sure. I personally dont expect a whole lot from first year players. Even those in the first round usually dont exceed expectations - except maybe for running backs and the odd receiver. I am really disappointed in the offense and not really on Love - but on Lafleur. Now some of that can be blamed on injuries - but really Love has wheels and a solid head on his shoulders - so having him sit in the pocket and get sacked seems to be the OC/HC fault and not on the Oline. The fact is that other than the Bears game - we have played poorly on offense and not to the teams strength - ie speed and deception. That is in IMO really showing that AR was the reason for Lafleur's success and not some great offensive mind was possessed by our head coach. That is my big surprise and disappointment. With just a little bit more of a creative approach we could have won every game other than against Detroit.

Thanks, for the 5 positives. Agreed....Looking forward to Gary with the normal amount of snaps. The Offense is the main worry. Hopefully Jones heals up finally and contributes again soon. We need another dynamic RB in the stable and some OL help. Gute, I'm looking at you. ST has done better than I was expecting in the kicking department. GPG
