Evan Williams Is A Star

It doesn't matter if he plays as a post safety or near the line of scrimmage; Evan Williams is a dawg.

The Green Bay Packers have been finding fourth-round gems in recent drafts. In 2022, they drafted Romeo Doubs, who led the team in targets and tied with Jayden Reed for most receiving touchdowns in 2023. That same year, they picked Zach Tom, one of the top right tackles in 2024.

The Packers traded up to select Evan Williams in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, and it has proven to be well worth it so far. He is currently the highest-graded safety in the NFL and the top-graded rookie according to Pro Football Focus through six games.

Williams has recorded at least an 81.0 defensive grade in three games this season. He achieved an 80.0 tackling grade against the Indianapolis Colts. Against the Arizona Cardinals, he posted an elite 91.2 coverage grade and also recorded an 80.0 tackling grade.

We don't need to rely solely on advanced stats to recognize Evan Williams' impact on the field; the tape reflects it as well. He recorded a season-high in snaps against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5. He was flying around the field and making plays in both the run and pass game.

He made two key plays against the Rams. First, he helped the Packers stop Los Angeles on fourth down inside the red zone. The Rams ran a pre-snap tight end motion to the left, and Evan Williams followed him across the offensive line. As the tight end cut inside, Williams maintained great coverage, leaving him with no chance to make a play on the ball.

With the score at 24-19 in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles was marching down the field to try to take the lead. They faced a fourth down from the Packers' 38-yard line. Green Bay brought a five-man pressure, and Williams was responsible for the tight end cutting inside. He made a crucial play on the ball, which sealed the game for the Packers.

Williams has been physical in run defense. On one play, when the Rams ran a toss to the left, he came from the secondary to help make the tackle. Packers fans haven't seen a safety flying downhill to attack a block in quite some time.

He also had a couple of great plays against the Cardinals. He forced a fumble during a drive when Arizona was nearing the red zone, attempting to get the game back to a two-score margin.

On 3rd and 1, Kyler Murray kept the football on a zone read. Williams lined up on the edge and made a perfect play to stuff Arizona's offense, forcing them to punt.

Evan Williams has been a force against both the pass and the run, and if he maintains this consistency throughout the year, he will be a lock for the All-Rookie Team. He just keeps giving Green Bay Packers fans every reason to believe the franchise has struck gold in the fourth-round once again.

It's nice having safeties that can tackle.

Compare Evan Williams to last season's safety, Darnell Savage.

No more missed tackles, tighter coverage, even punching out the ball to force a fumble.

What a difference.

It's always nice when seeing rookies making flash plays, it's exactly what the team and the fans look for in rookies.

The man has 6 games under his belt, i think it might be a bit early to call him a "star"
I'm not so sure, he's earned those 'star' stripes yet.
Drink the kool-aid, carry the G, whatever gets you there i guess.
Promising?...yes, so lets watch him 'get there'.

Understandably, Williams has a high PFF grade of over 90 in that short time and that is a great start for the team, for himself, and us, the fans.

Now... if were going off of PFF grades in week 6.
Talk to me about Rashan Gary in year 6 after the big contract..

"Rising star," is that better?

Certainly he's played well so far, and gives every indication that he will at least continue to, even if he can't improve from here. Normally players keep improving for at least 3 years and if he does that it'll be nothing short of incredible, perhaps getting as good as X? Hopefully the two of them have a relationship that includes X helping him along, and I'd suspect that's a part of his early success.

This is one of those things that makes the noticeable comraderie significant.

I was surprised when they drafted Williams in the 4th round, as I didn't even remember reading about him in the draft coverage. I just looked back at the CHTV draft guide, and Williams was listed as the 13th best safety. They only wrote a few sentences about him and didn't even have his picture in there. They said he had strong instincts and excellent ball skills, among other things, but his limited speed may prevent him from becoming a consistent NFL starter. So now I'm wondering if he is somehow overcoming that limitation or if he is not as slow as people thought he was.

His 40 time at the combine (4.60) is a tick faster than Xavier McKinney's (4.62) which is identical to Sapp from last year. Anthony Johnson Jr was 4.54.

I guess this stat isn't that important to the position? If true I find that surprising. Jerry Rice was 4.71; he famously sàid no one was chasing him. Did he really get faster throughout his career, or did he just perform poorly at his combine? I'd be surprised if X and Evan Williams both performed poorly at the combine and came in with near identical times.

Whatever's going on with all this I obviously have no clue, but if Evan Williams keeps making plays? That's more important than any measurable like a 40 time. Gutey hit on another winner one way or another ...

It would be interesting to know how ones reaction time could affect or enhance a 40 time? A guy has a 3.8 40, but a terrible reaction time, compared to that 4.6 with great ball skills. The combine is a great tool to measure athletic ability, but there's obviously so much more to the big picture!

I coach football. I have had kids who were some of the fastest runners on my team, offensively they were juggernauts. However, it could be very frustrating when putting some of those kids on defense because despite their overall speed, they were slow to react to the flow of the offense in front of them and slow to read the direction of the ball. Often this resulted in a hesitation of just a second or so in initial movement towards the ball effectively leaving them out of position to make any kind of play.

Instincts and reaction time play a big role in a defenders ability to get moving towards the ball. Speed will not always suffice.

4.6 is not slow for a Safety IF it is teamed with quickness, rapid read and react skills, solid tackling, and intelligence.

Williams has these attributes, including a 1.55 10 yard split. The 10 yard is overshadowed by the more glamorous 40 yard, straight line speed test, but is more indicative of "football speed"...especially for a Safety.

For comparison, Bullard, a pre draft consensus top S prospect, ran a 4.47 and had the top 10 yard at the combine with a 1.51 split. Williams with his 40 at 4.6 nearly matched him with his 1.55 10 yard split.

Gold dust twins to join the "X factor"!

Apparently he's a legend! The combination of instincts and football IQ was what everyone reported on, those few who noticed him at all. I guess that's what Gutey based his pick on, thinking it important for the position. Whatever the backstory is there, right now it looks like a genius move and a player you just can't take off the field.

GPG!

Nobody is a star after 6 games. Williams is still learning. What he has shown is what appears to be rare natural instinct for the ball and play.

That, not his off the charts athleticism, really made Woodson the (multi)generational player he was while he was here. It allowed Micah Hyde, a borderline athlete to become a top safety for years, had we only recognized it. Other than Nick Collins -which took 5 seasons—there are few Packers I could claim have had that level of instinct over 3 decades. That Williams is seriously suggesting he may have through his play is beyond exciting.

It’s very rare that you see that kind of natural feel on any team. Williams appears to have it. It’s frankly even more exciting when one thinks that we probably have 2 on this team that one can say have that, and both play safety. This safety tandem could become historically dominant based on instinct. Certainly we may never see 2 as gifted playing side-by-side on the Packers in generations.

Williams could well become a star. He’s not there yet and neither he nor fans need too much hyping in advance. Let him grow while being excited by the potential.

On the subject of young players blowing expectations out of the water, when are we going to see Emmanuel Wilson recognized as perhaps the biggest steal since Sam Shields or Tramon? A UDFA who averaged 6 yards per carry per injury as a rookie and every time he gets the ball just extends that. He makes yards, he’s got burst, he’s got hands and he’s shown up as the best blocker out of the backfield consistently all season so far. It’s not impossible that only injuries ensured we are benefitting from that not another team.

In the summer most thought he’d be cut. Right now I’d have no issue if he had to start. Were I writing a piece about an unheralded break out, that might be a good one.

Have to say it was the CHTV draft guide in particular that brought him to my attention, Along with Bullard, and Cooper , gave me a lot more to enjoy this year!

Those 3 rookie defenders could wind up making a HUGE difference this year! It seems like the organization is set up to make the most of them between Hafley as DC and X as veteran leadership. Hopefully the coaching staff will improve our play at LB, isn't that Campanelli and his run after the thief spiel?

I like McDuffie and Wilson. You win football games with players like them on your team. But they are back ups.

Good back ups that are pressed into starting roles in the new Pack Attack D because Cooper needed experience hampered by injury. Well, Cooper needs to be a full time starter now. And I believe his talent is best employed at "Mike".

Walker is making a ton of tackles...51 so far and on pace for 144 in season! Yet few impact plays. Admit this is surprising me as I believed he would soar in Hafley's defense being a disruptor. He may be miscast as the Mike because he remains a tic slow in his read and react. Would he be better receiving pre snap direction rather than giving it?

Hopper needs to be worked in too. Like Williams, he was consistent getting to the ball during preseason.

The tackle made on Murry was poetry in motion. How many times have we been burned when the edge wasn’t protected. What a great play he made.

If my memory serves me correctly, I remember reading that one player on Oregon University's football team touted Williams as their best defensive player. There's a reason why Oregon has been a top 10 team in recent years. They have had some really good football players; and Williams is one of them.

Dan Lanning is a monster recruiter, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. There's abundant talent on the ducks.
