I hope we don't get any QB or RB. Wait til next year's draft. We have 2 backup QBs already and aren't going to get anyone better than JL10 now. We're committed to him for at least this year.

A great RB needs to play right away. Dillon didn't do all that much for us last year but we shouldn't write him off just yet. AJ33 might be nearing the end of his prime but together they still give us a run first offense. Hopefully.

On paper our talent on D is still dominant, I'd like to see that ride this year instead of spending draft capital for Joe Barry to waste. (Fill in holes, obviously) Round out our offense! The #1 kicker was snatched up early by SF, can we get #2?

Our ST should be a powerhouse.

I do like the priority of an edge rusher, if Van Ness proves to dominate that can really change games. Contrarian picks so far, to be sure. We'll see ...

This is true.
Jake Witt is a hell of an athlete.
He played basketball at Michigan Tech his freshman year.
He transferred to Northern Michigan University to begin his sophomore year and played tight end.
His junior year he was moved to offensive tackle and played there through his senior season.
He did his Pro Day at Central Michigan University.
Several teams have come up to Marquette to work him out prior to the draft.
I'd love to have a "Yooper" playing for the Packers!

Watch for Jake Witt, a tackle from Northern Michigan. I worked for a paper in the UP when he was in high school at Ewen-Trout Creek. He was a multi sport star in football, basketball and track and field. He's a big guy at 6'8" and very athletic.

I'd really like a DL pick in round 4 as needed, but might Gutey go for another WR? They need a big physical WR IMO. Might they draft AT Perry, or maybe a Dontavian Wicks?

At DT, getting any of:
Adebawore
Brooks
Ojomo
McGuire

- would be a coup.

Could also see them tap Robinson or Skinner at Safety.

Same for CBs Jakorian Bennett & Clark Phillips III.

OG/OC Luke Wypler R5-6.

Crushing bigtime on WRs Matt Landers & Justin Shorter

Colby Wooden, DT

Knew we had to get a DL to help the defense & replace Reed & Lowry.

What is everyone's thoughts on Wooden? Seems light in the shorts & from reading sounds like a tweener. How do you think he is going to be used?

Ah.....was right....I like Dontavian Wicks. Big player at WR at 6'2" and 210 lbs. Runs a little slower at 4.57. I have liked DW all along and believe many of us will come to really like him. Runs great routes! He is a little smaller Lazard and is going to give us a very good player. Great pick & depth!

Colby Wooden DL. I like this young man. He mostly played DE in college but was actually better inside with his 6'4" 280 lb frame. Good speed and strength too. Has plenty of room to pack on "good weight".

I love this:

“He’s a coach’s dream. Nobody is going to outwork him and football means a lot to him.” -- Area scout for AFC team

Emerging theme for the Packers 2023 draft...speed, more speed please. All 5 picks have serious speed for their position.

Very interesting Draft in that for the first time I can remember I am in sync with the Front Office. Not sure if I should be nervous or elated. I thought pass rusher was a need. Van Ness in the 1st. Needed offense…2 TE’s and a WR on Day 2. Need depth on the DLine… versatile Wooden in the 4th.

Considering the Packers still have 2 5’s, 2 6’s and 4 7’s I believe we are going to see a little moving up to grab some more targeted picks. This is shaping up to be a fine draft. Gute is really doing a nice job.

With the upcoming #149 pick do they draft a Safety, or maybe grab their back-up QB? The obvious would be Safety but this seems like a good spot for the QB.

Here are the top remaining players at these two positions:

Safety:

Antonio Johnson
Brandon Joseph
JL Skinner
Jammie Robinson

QB:

Tanner McKee
Jaren Hall
Clayton Tune
Dorian Thompson- Robinson

Would think it would be one of these two positions unless maybe there is a good OL, & particularly an OT available.

Before we get to 149, here's a synopsis from Packers Wire on Wooden, who is anything but:

"Wooden (6-4, 273) produced 30 tackles for loss, 15.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, six pass breakups and a blocked field goal over 40 games and 36 starts at Auburn. In 2022, he set career-highs with 11.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks and three forced fumbles."

That is a good work resume playing in a top college conference.

The Packers D front is going to look very different this year. Opponents are going to have the "heed their speed". I think this room has potential to have the most speed in my memory....Van Ness, Wooden, Gary, Wyatt. Even Kenny at 5 sec 40 for a man his size is pretty good.

Let's hope all that speed translates to effectiveness propelling the defense in the top 5/10. Recognize we are adding a lot of young inexperienced talent with potential, so patience is necessary. This is a young team that will grow both offensively & defensively over the next few years. Really like how Gutey is toggling between both defense & offense filling holes. He has very good balance as he maneuvers through the draft. Very curious what he is going to do with our back-up QB?

I think TE, Josh Whyle being taken a few selections prior to the Packers 149 may have affected the Packers as they had him in for a pre-draft looksie! I don’t know guys. Will Levis couldn’t unseat him. They don’t need starting material. They need a guy that can just come in and win a game or two if Love gets hurt. If they can develop him further or works on arm strength, then he becomes an eventual trade chip.

Sean Clifford: Weaknesses
Turns rhythm throws into extended plays unnecessarily.
Ball doesn’t come out on time.
Sloppy getting feet set to the target.
Engages in long staring contests.
Lacks desired NFL arm talent.:

THAT'S the QB we pick as a back-up? I sure hope Gute has another plain or pick up his sleeve. This guy doesn't have much of an arm and IMO there were much better prospects on the board like Antonio Johnson, Safety (HUGE NEED) from Texas A & M. I think they could have got him with the last pick in the 7th if they HAD to have him.

What I can share is he is fast in the 40-yard running a 4.57. To put things in perspective....Jordan Love runs unofficial 4.65 40-yard dash. Aaron Rodgers ran a 4.71 in the 40-yard, In 2022, Sean ran for 255 yards for a 4.9 yard average.

He is older turning 25-years old this summer, but frankly for a QB with Jordan Love inexperienced and Clifford likely to be back-up it probably is a positive. Clifford had a 100.6 QB rating in 2022. Seems pretty decent to me!

I agree LP!

For the Packers in the NOW situation they find themselves I think it is a positive. They just drafted one of my sleeper WR's who I really like in Wicks. He too will be 25 years old this summer. Hell of a player & will become a fan favorite. Love the pick! They needed a bigger WR & now they picked the smaller & quicker WR in Reed, and then came back and got the bigger sized WR. Telling you......I think Gutey is killing it in the draft. No, I am not sure the media will grade the draft high other than he has been drafting a lot of offense, but I believe in the next couple of years we all will be very happy with a lot of these guys.

Wicks, the guy with the worst hands in the draft. Wow, bad round. A low ceiling, low floor QB and a guy with a 23.1 percent drop rate, notoriously described as a man whose “hands look like bricks half the time.” I would not have touched him unless he can play corner—he is a good athlete.

Just Wow.

IMHO, I see Wicks with a high ceiling and bringing a lot to the Packer offense. When you are drafting in these later rounds you are drafting for talent but with potential. You watch Wicks play & run routes and you see a very good WR. Packers have had a lot of WR's come with marginal hands but they evolve and improve. I am shocked though AT Perry has not been selected. That is a surprise!

After the Wicks selection I feel the Packers now could go in any direction. Hopefully, they draft the BPA available from the collection of these positions. How are they prioritizing the rest of their needs?

1. Could use a big body DL
2. Could use another TE who is an inline TE
3. Definitely need a Safety, or a CB
4. Could use another OL, but particularly an interior OL
5. Kicker
6. Running back

So far just not a huge fan or a fan at all of Clifford and I thought Reed was a bit early but I totally understand the pick.

Louis Riddick and Cough, Cough Mel Kipper LOVE Brooks... Gushing over him actually

I also like the Wicks Pick...I like this draft so far. Nice job by Gute but WHERE is the Safety?

I'm thinking Gute has a plan for a veteran or two. Maybe even Amos for a lot less money.

With all the pass rush help maybe Amos holds up better as does the whole secondary. NO OFF coverage Joe!

Love the Brooks pick.

Indifferent on Clifford. I’m guessing he could be a competent game manager, but the pick may have been better spent on a Safety, OL, or even RB. Could probably get similar production later on or with UDFA.

Dislike the Wicks pick. Dropsies are a red flag even for a great athlete such as him. The FO obviously sees something different, and they know more than I do. I’d prefer rolling the dice on some OL mason jars in these late rounds.

Yeah, we all hope the defense improves, but remember Joe Barry is the Packers DC; when it comes to calling the shots for an NFL defense, he reminds me of a horror movie character, a NIGHTMARE!!

This whole fn draft is that way. Our one TE missed most of last season to injury and he was a two pick and we passed on some of the best TE's available to take him. Myers from ND still on the board? WTF is going on.

Strong leg but a lot of accuracy issues beyond 40 yards. Under 54% success rate for attempts over 40 yards. Not sure he’s better than the guys we’ve been cycling through.

CW,
Hell with our draft haul particularly on offense we should not be kicking any FG's to begin with, but over 40-yards.....come on now! :)

Moody went at the end of the 3rd. Imagine the weeping and gnashing of teeth had Gutekunst taken a kicker instead of TE II in the 3rd.

Dude, you CLEARLY didn't watch the draft. At least LOOK and see who was drafted before making you comments.

I know the 7th round is a dart throw in the dark, but remember, the Packers found Mark Tauscher and Donald Driver in the 7th round.

Hey.....very true, but that's nothing...don't forget Don the Magic Man Majkowski drafted 1987 / Round: 10 / Pick: 225. We won't even talk about Bart Starr and being picked in the 17th round.

Hoping for OL now. OT Jake Witt. I’d also take a flyer on Andrew Vorhees. Got injured at Combine , but has nasty demeanor and came back after injury to do the bench. Gotta love that desire.

My expectations are for OL at this point in the draft much like last year. Problem is they get picked over so fast & heavy. My philosophy....draft them heavily and throw them at the wall & hope one sticks!

First pick…..developmental player….can’t do that with a high draft pick
Second pick…..bad knee only 11 catches
Third pick…..punt returner

My grade c- or possibly a d. Terrible what Gutt could have had and left on the table but its like they deliberately shy away from the big names as in we cant afford them.

I love the S Anthony Johnson Jr. pick. Tough thumper with CB fluidity & ball skills. Great developmental pick.

Agreed. I generally prefer drafting to fill holes in later rounds, but this guy sweats solid value.

2021 he had his worst year as a CB. 2022 moved him to S and he had his best season by far. He may have found his position. Will need a lot of coaching at Safety but showed he can play there.

Pretty good 7th round prospect for a team needing Safety competition to build the depth chart. He'll compete. Obviously loves football staying on at ISU another year to give S a try and it was worth it.

Another WR! Toure & Melton heads up!

Grant DuBose, wide receiver 6'2" and 201 lbs runs official 4.57-second 40-yard dash at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

I really like DuBose. Fun story of perseverance too. A blocking, physical possession type with good hands and strength in contested situations. Runs good routes. Could easily fill the Lazard role if Musgrave isn’t. Tough, physical.

Don't know much about him but looks pretty good. That WR room just got a lot more bodies & competition escalated. While there may be someone else deep on the roster I am missing we have:

Doubs
Watson
Melton
Toure
Reed
Wicks
DuBose
*Musgrave - where does he play? Strictly TE or maybe some in the slot when not in 12 personnel?

Didn't pick up a Super Star WR like a Quenton Johnston, JSN, Kincaid, but Musgrave, Reed, Wicks & DuBose definitely strengthened the WR room. Sorely needed big time! Now....who is going to step forward? Musgrave when healthy is going to blow the doors off defenses. Besides Musgrave....I am mostly curious to watch Reed and the role/impact he has. Gonna be fun!!!! Eat your heart out Aaron Rodgers!

History suggests one or two won’t be healthy at any one time. A couple will struggle. It’s about what we need to get through preseason, though I think we add a few more tomorrow for camp too. The guy you missed was Cotton.

It seems Gute is a maverick in this draft.
It seems he went for many a player who is perhaps underrated due to not having a stellar senior season, but who showed signs of stardom in previous years of college (which is also the story of Jordan Love).
Therefore, it's difficult to evaluate these guys, but it seems that whatever injuries or circumstances hindered them this past season in college are in the past and won't affect them going forward.
My impression is that Gute went for a diverse array of largely overlooked athletic and skillful players with big upsides who are high-energy and hard workers.
Based on the little bit of analysis and film I've seen of these 13 players taken in this draft by the Packers, I'm excited.
My hunch, a largely uneducated opinion, is a grade of "A" for Gute.

Swisch,
Home run & it is outta here!

The typical media analysis following a draft is a joke! Gutey did very well & I think we all are going to be very happy with this draft. Really happy both on offense but defense. LVN, Musgrave, this Reed kid who I had no insight on....wow! Then we have the Wooden guy & the defender I love in Karl Brooks. What a stud! I know some have questioned Dantavian Wicks selection but if you cannot see how extremely smooth and a good athlete he is you should follow tennis. If his hands are questionable now they will get better. Keep an eye out on this kid....he has the potential to be extremely good! Gutey gets an early A+ from me!

Will also add even if some of the picks don't work out like we hope the fact that Gutey recognized the need to bolster the offense and he went after it aggressively alone is worth a hell of a lot of points from me. Damn good job!
