Micah Hyde: 2015 Packers Player Report Card
By jasonperone
Micah Richmond Hyde

- Age: 25
- Ht./Wt: 6'0", 209lbs
- College: Iowa
- NFL Experience: 3 years
Expectations coming into the season: With Morgan Burnett and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix entrenched as starters at safety, Hyde was to be a role player on defense. His bigger role was to be as punt returner on special teams. Hyde would fill in on defense in certain packages and in case of injury. With his known struggles in coverage, Hyde was slated as more of support near the line of scrimmage (run support, blitz packages). A role player on defense, at most.
Player’s highlights/low-lights: Hyde posted three interceptions on the season. His first two came early in each game, against the St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders. His last, in week 17 against the Minnesota Vikings was a phenomenal catch with his back to the ball and grabbing the pick one-handed while falling away from the line of scrimmage. Hyde had the presence of mind to turn and fall so he could secure the turnover. Hyde's low light was his down field coverage. This has never been a strength of Hyde's and he was put in some tough spots, having to defend some of the better pass catchers. Opposing offenses were able to create mismatches on Hyde on a regular basis.
Level of Expectations met: Hyde had some fumble recoveries in addition to his interceptions. He wasn't consistently great throughout the season, but he gave the Packers some decent snaps. His coverage hasn't improved and that's something that will limit Green Bay's usage of him on defense in future.
Grade: B-
Player’s contributions to team success: Hyde's contributions on defense were good and bad at times. He created or secured at least four turnovers on the season, which isn't anything to scoff at. It's hard to argue that he didn't help the defense but he has a limited role. His coverage issues led to points by opponents on several occasions, but as mentioned, that was also partly due to his known deficiencies in coverage.
Grade: B-
Player’s contributions in the playoffs: Hyde had a good day against Washington, posting eight tackles and defending one pass. He had just one tackle against the Arizona Cardinals. Defensively, Hyde wasn't a huge factor in the postseason for Green Bay.
Grade: C
Intangibles/misc: This is an area where I really like Hyde. He's a smart player. He may not get there in coverage, but he often knows where he needs to be. He's a good teammate and becoming a steady presence on this roster. He's certainly a team player, taking on special teams duties in addition to those at defensive back.
Grade: B+
Overall Grade: B-

I agree on the intangible and expectations grades. The other two grades seem a tad high, but are within range. Still think Hyde would do well as a SS, where he filled in for Burnett earlier this year, if given more reps. I am very comfortable when he is back to field punts. My overall grade would be a C+.

It was very good review and I agree mostly with you, buz you might gave him solid B, as well! That game against Arizona was very strange. Everything that might gone against Packers went against. Even the most incredible ball ricochets...

I had him at a C plus but you pretty much covered it. He has his moments both good and bad but I do like his energy he plays hard.

This is one of my hopes in the draft; a pass-coverage backup safety. Maybe in the middle-late rounds, there's a guy who's more of a free safety than a thumper.

As a DB he continues to get better every year even though he does have some areas to improve upon, he can get the team through a few games as a starter as was proven this year which the team cannot do at LT for example. As a returner he has shown the first few years that he can take it to the house and few have better hands on punt returns. However, his judgement on when to come up and catch it versus letting it roll took a step backwards. He is just a real solid football player with a long future ahead of him, hopefully he can stay in Green Bay.

I'd give him a D+ in Contributions to Success
Too often, I've seen him trail a TE(MIN and DEN)
IMO, he's the weak link in our Secondary, but I'm getting really nitpicky when I say that. Love his character tho.

I should probably view Hyde as a starter, since he plays so many snaps, but I really view him as a jack of all trades: back -up/dime guy, PR, STs, but he has the hybrid role as well. He is deficient in coverage due to his speed. Somewhat less than average as a hybrid, average as a dime, good as a PR and on STs. Still, a valuable guys who can fulfill multiple roles, and who is still on his rookie contract.

Hyde is so football smart. Unfortunately God did not gift him the gift of speed. His physical limitations really limit his impact. Solid and consistent on defense and sure hands on Punt returns, although in the two playoff games he costed them a total of 60-75 yards or so of field position by not fair catching 3-4 punts.... Fair grade, smart player

Wouldn't that be awesome if Hyde was about 30 lbs heavier? he'd be a great middle line backer with his football IQ

Too soft on the report card grade, I wish my kids had you as their teacher.
He had a C+ season at best. Just another guy.
