The Packers Running Back Situation Just Got a Little More Complicated
By GilMartin

The Green Bay Packers running back situation just got a little more complicated leading up to the team’s Week 15 game in Denver against the Broncos. The changes may have an impact on the game Sunday and on the rest of the season depending on how serious some of these situations become.
The Packers announced that starter Josh Jacobs experienced swelling in his injured knee after the team’s win over the Bears at Lambeau Field last week. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but was listed as a limited participant on Friday. He has officially been listed as questionable and will likely be a gametime decision on Sunday in Denver.
With the Bears on the schedule in the week following the game against the Broncos, might the Packers decide to give Jacobs a chance to rest his knee and get the swelling down so he’s more likely to be ready to face the Bears? The winner of the Green Bay-Chicago game will likely have the inside track to the NFC North title and a chance at the top seed in the NFC. Beating the Bears is clearly more important than defeating an AFC team, so sitting Jacobs if there’s doubt about his knee would make sense.
If Jacobs sits or is limited, it means a bigger role for backup Emauel Wilson. Wilson certainly has plenty of inspiration when playing against the Broncos. Wilson went undrafted in 2023. He signed with the Broncos a few weeks after the draft. But the Fort Valley State alum never really got a chance in Denver. They released him just three days after he joined the Broncos. The Packers signed him and he surprised everybody by making the team after leading the entire NFL in rushing yards during the preseason.
“How I took that? It was just like, ‘Damn!’ I thought it [my football career] was over, for real,” Wilson said.
Wilson admitted part of the problem was learning the playbook. At Fort Valley State, they ran a lot fewer plays than they did in the NFL and his assignments were more basic. Suddenly, he had to learn a lot more than which hole to run through. He had more blocking responsibilities and pass patterns to learn.
“I’m not a fast learner, but I can catch on once I learn something,” Wilson admitted. Fortunately, the Packers were more patient with the him.
Wilson has gotten over the disappointment, and he’s become an effective second-string running back for the Packers. But he hasn’t forgotten either.
“I ain’t worried about that no more,” Wilson said. “It’s long gone. I still keep that chip right there, though.”
If given the chance, there is no doubt Wilson would want to make some big plays against the Broncos. That would be a nice bit of revenge for him.
The other piece of running back news concerned 2024 third-round draft pick MarShawn Lloyd. The former USC star had returned to practice after the Packers opened his 21-day window to work with the team. He suffered a calf injury during the preseason and spent the season on the injured reserve with a designation to return.
Unfortunately, Lloyd missed Friday’s practice with what was described as a hamstring injury. He has been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Denver. The Packers have a little more than a week to either activate him to the 53-man roster or to shut him down for the 2025 season.
Last year, Lloyd played only one game before injuries ended his season. He later had appendicitis which made it impossible for him to return to action in 2024.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur were both excited about the potential Lloyd could bring to the offense. He has a running style that contrasts with Jacobs and Wilson who are both best running between the tackles. Lloyd would have given the Packers a true change of pace back who could get outside, make one cut and break off long gains.
It now appears that barring a very quick recovery, Lloyd will be shut down for the season. Injuries have derailed the first two seasons of Lloyd’s NFL career and put his football future in doubt.

Another "don't worry about the Broncos so much...focus on the bares!" article. In a parity focused NFL, it is a game of edges...so play the Broncos by blunting yours.
Play the game the way they practiced and played all season.
If JJ can't go, forget a pitch count. Just sit him. If he can, he seems to know his body and how his injuries affect his trademark style.
Obviously there is no way the team will force him to play. He might even tell the team he can't go. If he tells them he's feeling good, he will play.

Swelling on the knee is to be expected with this type of injury. I have no idea what to expect, and Wilson is apparently not at 100% either.

I used to be mad at Marshawn Lloyd for not contributing, but finally just started feeling bad for the guy. Who knows if he'll ever get over the injury issues. I imagine he's dreamed of the NFL since he was a kid and it has to be devastating. I guess it happens a lot, comes with the game. A healthy Lloyd would have been a nice addition.

Lloyd? The problem was gutenshite and his scouts! Of all the rbs eligible in the draft,he drafted and invalid who will never play, maybe the fo will take him to next training camp, if the problems of his ivalidity continue they'll sack his arse! Another wasted 3rd pick by gutenshite and company! Wtf! With all the rbs available, he drafted a crippled, lame invalid!! Today with jj fucked up the pack cant run the ball, can the makeshift ol give love to throw? Its going to gruelling today!

Lloyd was drafted right about where most people thought he would be drafted. He did not have an extensive injury history in college. And Gutekunst is such a bad GM that the Packers have been in the playoffs all but one season since he took over.

Not inconceivable at this point if not healthy enough this season to cut ties with him which would be a big disappointment to never see what he can really be or do!
GregC
December 13, 2025 at 01:25 pm
No reason to cut ties unless the medical situation looks REALLY bad. He's under contract for two more years, so having him on the training camp roster next year is even less of a commitment than it would be for any RB they sign off the street. That's my understanding of how it works, anyway.

Omg. Bullshit! For two years the dude’s been a hammer. Now he’s soft? Why do you hate Jacobs? Cause that’s the only way you could say something that f’ing stupid. Here’s what it is. You’re a BG hater and trying to slam the Jones/Jacobs move. 🙄. Grow TF up.

I was referring to Lloyd not jacobs,it was a bad pick. Like drafting dillon in 2nd round and Josiah in the 3rd, remember? The 2 could have been taken in 5th-6th rounds! His dillon playing at all in Philladelphia? Josiah? No longer in nfl! Gutenshite missed alot of picks, like tt

Wilson is capable of carrying the load on the ground if needed. In addition to picking up pass rushers, we'll probably also need him to catch short passes and screens--anything to keep the heat off Love and avoid sacks, which Denver leads the league in.
Marshawn Lloyd? Sigh, not a bad draft pick at the time, but just very bad luck. I don't know what they do with him after this season; he's on a rookie contract, but his reliability score is obviously zero. I'd like to see them acquire or draft a slashing type to complement the current guys we have if we're moving on.

Bucky Irving was staring him square in the face. A superior talent.
GregC
December 13, 2025 at 02:17 pm
Bucky Irving is listed at 195 pounds. Too small for the Packers. I don't remember the last time they had an RB that small. Aaron Jones was listed at 207.
jannesbjornson
December 13, 2025 at 04:59 pm
His numbers don't lie. If LaFleur doesn't know how to use a back like Irving, his offensive genius designation should be challenged. You can get late round picks to be crash cars in a demo derby offense like Shanahan. He was in the running for offensive rookie of the year in 2024. Looked good Thursday night coming back from injury.

Bucky Irvine is seriously banged up. He appears to be struggling to survive the physicality of NFL. Superior talent or not, his future is also being debated.

December 14, 2025 at 08:49 am
Keep debating, he's dealing with a shoulder injury. Liam Coen went off to Jax-ville and Mayfield is not fully in synch. Jacobs is getting paid a lot more money and Lloyd has yet to see the playing field in two years.

I'd be willing to go with Wilson and Brooks if Jacobs could use a break. They've both shown that they're dependable; they know their assignments, they protect the ball, they block, they can catch.
Lloyd's shot is next year. IF he can stay healthy through training camp and the exhibition season, he could be the replacement for Wilson, who will probably leave in FA. If he cannot, maybe it's time to move on.

I still doubt how much LaFleur would play Lloyd simply because he’s not proven as a protector. That doesn’t mean I don’t see his potential, individually or as an added dimension to this team. It just means that, even if healthy, I doubt we see much of it.
As it stands, we’ve been here before. The result was Wilson running for our only 100 yards ground game this year. That’s more than surviving. Not that I would expect him, Jacobs or anyone to do that on Sunday against the Denver D.
The objective is to keep their D and rush honest and gradually wear them down between passes, or should be. Wilson is as physical as Jacobs and gets hard yards. Let him take the beating this week and Jacobs next.
This game matters. Lose it and we are back to square one next week. I hope the coaches have more ambition and belief than a lot of the scribbling classes are showing.

Picture the offense starting the game with Watson, Reed and Wicks at wide receiver and then Savion Williams and Bo Melton in the backfield. Instant timeout by the defense. Just a thought. Also, TY Montgomery went from receiver to running back. It has been done.

Lloyd just can't catch a break nor can he stay healthy. At this point it seems pointless to activate him. He's had no game time to speak of and, if I recall correctly (it's been 2 years since they drafted him) didn't he have somewhat of a fumbling reputation in college? I think the Packers have excellent backup backs in Wilson and Brooks so we're all right for this game if Jacobs can't go.
Off topic: The December weather here in Tucson, AZ has been really wild! I've got the AC on because it will be 80°F today (was 79° yesterday) with continued way-above-average temperatures continuing for the rest of the month. I'm looking at the temps and snow, ice, etc. in the mid-west and it feels like I'm looking at a distant land. Having grown up in and spent the first 50+ years in Wisconsin and been here for 20 years I'm still having a hard time getting into "The Christmas Spirit" right now. It took me almost a year after moving here before my body had adapted to the higher elevation (nothing like Denver) and my ears stopped popping when driving downhill from the mountain foothills to the city. The high altitude is a real thing for this Denver game. I'm hoping to have the team get some early scoring to avoid the long drives against the defense like the last game.

Jesus Christ, and I came on this site after Lloyd was drafted and told you guys how excited I was to draft this guy. I had saw him play a few times at USC and thought a stronger, bigger, faster, Tyler Ervin right away. I was talking out the side of my neck what a player this guy could be in Green Bay. He's played what, three snaps in the regular season?

Everyone can pretend that Lloyd is a competent NFL running back, but his one game played was uninspiring. I have no idea why he can't stay healthy and, evidently, neither do the Packers. Time to send him to Madison and try to analyze how he can stay healthy. If he gets injured next preseason, cut him.
Denver cut Wilson for not exhibiting the ability to pick up the playbook, by his own admission. While I don't see this as a revenge game for Wilson, he has shown he can be the bell cow. The Packers will be fine without Jacobs this game.
LaFleur will need to be at his best calling plays, especially third down and short yardage, while Love will have to prove he is a serious candidate for MVP, if the Packers are to win. Hafley will need to adjust the defense, especially in the fourth quarter, to give the Packers the win. This game will come down to coaching, not missing players, as the reason for victory or defeat.

Don’t underestimate Strong as a runner. He’s fast (4.37 40) and powerful although a smaller back than Wilson or Jacobs at 207. He’s not going to carry the pile though or bounce off contact. He’s more a shoot through the gap type or an outside runner. He’s a one cut guy without Jones type wiggle. He wasn’t proven as a protector when drafted. I have no idea how much he’s improved since. Brooks would get a big load if Both Wilson and Jacobs can’t go and Strong used as a change of pace option is my guess. I’d still not push Jacobs to play if it will impact next week. LaFleur will have to dust off parts of the Lloyd playbook.

They elevated Pierre Strong from the practice squad. If neither Jacobs nor Wilson can play, it will just be Pierre Strong and Chris Brooks at RB. Not ideal.
Strong was a 4th round pick for the Patriots in 2022. Listed at 5'11" and 207 pounds. Ran a 4.37 40-yard dash. From South Dakota State. Has 99 NFL carries for an average of 5.0 yards, with the Patriots and Browns. Not sure why both those teams let him go.

I played college Field Hockey as center forward and there was plenty of physical contact and contact with fast, errant balls and sticks.
And, yes, the team is misrepresenting the issue. Hobbs hit the guy and was actually benched.

I see the Pack has activated RB Pierre Strong Jr for today. I don't know much about him, but I see he ran a 4.37 forty.at combine .

He’s returned kickoffs for both NE and the Browns as well as 24 in college. His stats suggest he’s decent but not spectacular as a returner. I don’t think he’s handled punts.

He's been on the PS all year and if the team saw return ability he'd have been a ST mainstay by now, I would think. If Savion plays he would be the KR.
Strong, Jr was incredibly productive at South Dakota State that earned him a 4th round selection. He has some good NFL experience.
