How Will the Packers Respond to Micah Parsons' Challenge?

The Green Bay Packers started the 2025 season with two convincing wins. They beat the defending NFC North champion Lions and the Washington Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season, in dominant fashion. Since then, however, the Packers suffered an upset loss to the Cleveland Browns and an unsatisfying tie with the Dallas Cowboys. Now, after the bye week, Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons has issued a challenge to the team to play at a different level and to change their mind set. But will the Packers be able to answer his challenge?

Parsons challenged his team not only to bounce back this Sunday by beating the Cincinnati Bengals, but to make this a “statement win.” The only way to have a statement win against an inferior opponent is to win the game going away and to leave no doubt who the better team is.

“You should be pissed off. Like, you're sitting down pissed off,” Parsons explained. “We just gave up 40 points and we're talking about we can't give up 20 and how we shouldn't lose games. Well, that's how you lose games. So, we should be pissed off. We should be ready to come out here, play Sunday regardless of who's playing and whoop some butt if you're really dogs. That's how I come, that's how I look at it. Like, we really say who we want to be. We should take that last, how we finished last, and we should punish these guys, and we should want to leave a statement. Like, it should be a statement win, should be a statement on defense. I just think it's a statement. These guys should be pissed off because I was pissed off.”

The statement was primarily aimed at the defense, which gave up 40 points to the Cowboys after allowing a combined total of 44 points in the first three games of the season. But it really should be directed at the entire team and the coaching staff.

The Packers defense needs to start creating more turnovers. Through four games, they have two interceptions and no fumble recoveries. Because the Pack has only turned the ball over twice, they are even in turnover differential, but great defenses create turnovers and that just hasn’t happened frequently enough in the first four games of the season.

On offense, the Packers need to get better play from their offensive line, especially when blocking for the run. The Packers may get starting right tackle, Zach Tom and left guard Aaron Banks back in the lineup this Sunday. Injuries to those two players have hurt the team’s ability to open holes for the running game thus far.

Josh Jacobs continues to gain yardage after initial contact, but because of the struggles of the offensive line, too often, that first contact has occurred at or even behind the line of scrimmage. An injury to Rasheed Walker may cause yet another shuffle to the offensive line personnel this week, but the team needs to overcome it and play well.

The team and the coaching staff also need to clean up the mental mistakes that have led to so many penalties on both sides of the ball. The occasional pass interference call or holding penalty are frustrating but they will happen. But lining up offsides? An ineligible man downfield? Illegal motion? These mistakes are avoidable and have cost them team in some key situations.

And don’t get me started about special teams. The blocking for extra points and field goals has been terrible and led to a blocked field goal and a blocked extra point that was returned for two points by the Cowboys. Punt and kick returners have difficulty knowing when and where to catch the ball and when to let it bounce. The coverage teams continue to give up long returns at inopportune times.

Then there’s the play calling. Matt LaFleur and the offense seemed to have no urgency in overtime. The Packers had plenty of time to score a touchdown in their only possession of overtime and win the game. They didn’t manage the clock well at all and almost lost the chance to tie the game with a field goal on the final play of overtime.

Parsons has laid down a challenge to his new team. Like the Browns and Cowboys, the Packers are the better team on paper and should beat the Bengals. Real Super Bowl contenders not only win those games but win them convincingly when they are playing well and find ways to win when they’re not. The Packers have to prove they belong among the true contenders. The challenge has been issued. Now, how will the team respond?

I've been really busy with work lately(two days off in September), is Leatherhead still saying the Packers are a run 1st team and Stockholder still licking South American Tree Frogs and going all stream of consciousness on you guys?

Great to see Parsons pushing to be a dominant defense but also time to lead by example. Going out and having a monster game would go a long way to making sure the D as a whole has a great outing.

Parsons has only faced Cinci twice, but has a couple sacks and several QB hits...I'm not surprised he's feeling confident.

After the first three games I started believing in the Parsons/Covington effect. Gary, Van Ness and Wyatt were finally performing to their draft/talent level. The underperforming defensive linemen were finally being difference makers. Then came the debacle in Dallas. They reverted back to their underperforming ways. I no longer believe that Parsons/Covington will get the Packers defense to the Super Bowl because of that game. I do, however, still believe that Parsons has the ability to allow the defensive linemen to perform at a Super Bowl contending level of play. I just don't believe they have the heart (controlled aggression and will to dominate) to play at a championship level consistently. Not even a Parsons can instill a championship attitude in these first round draft picks with their out of this world ras scores.
His challenge will go unanswered over the next 13 weeks whenever the Packers play a good offense.
My challenge to the defensive line is: Prove Me Wrong!

O line. Offensively and play calling takes us to the spot we will be. Whatever that is .
On paper should be a big win but why does it feel like it will be closer.or on a nice crisp October day they actually take care of business in a big way.
These are the days of our lives Packers Fans. 5 more home games after this and 7 on the road.
No room for error.
Joe will throw the long ball and wide out screens.

Maybe a game in all 5 phases would be nice for once.

Gutenkunst gave away the farm for Micah. Micah is a great pass rusher, but this is not Ron Wolf in the 1993 pre Salary Cap world of the NFL. White cost the Packers nothing but $$$$ - Micah - TWO first round draft choices and the best run stopper of last year not named TJ Slaton - Kenny Clark.

And Jordan - forget about it. All of 2019-2020 college football - both FCS and FBC - leading interception throwing machine, Jordan is mentally unaware and SLOW SLOW SLOW in the uptake and processing what is in front of him.
As just another example, in the Cowboys game:
1) the First half fumble - he does not move in the pocket and has no awareness of defenders around him. The ball should have been released long before Jordan had the ball poked out of his grasp.
2) the Packers last possession in overtime - on the last plays Jordan had open running backs and receivers yards down the field and ignored them and instead dumped the ball off to Golden on 1st and 10 with 32 seconds left for a loss of 3 (packers had to blow a time out) and Wilson for a loss of 1 (28 seconds left on 2nd and 1)) - and both Golden and Wilson should be credited for not losing the ball or losing more yardage.
And who can forget the interception into triple coverage just 3 weeks ago against the lowly and futile and inept Browns with the Packers leading 10 to 3, 3 minutes and 18 seconds left in the 33th quarter and the Packers with 3rd and 3 at the Green Bay 25 and just needing to let Whelan punt and run out the clock.

For some reason the Packers are 14 point favorites tomorrow at home against the Bengals - the largest point spread this week in the entire NFL - yet they will be lucky to get out with a win, even with 40 year old Joe Flacco at the helm.

Jordan Love completed one of the best games of his career leading the team to 40 points and 3 TD passes and you feel the need to dump on him?

Mentally unaware and slow processing his reads? To the contrary, Love's grasp of the offense is excellent. He knows where his targets are and he usually hits them.

The fumble happened after Walker got pushed back and let his man run free to his left and into Love...as he was prepared to fire a pass.

SLOW SLOW SLOW DOWN. How about getting some honest facts before posting what you make up to be truth? Reggie White was signed as a free agent. Micah Parsons was traded for. You evidently don't understand the difference. In free agency the team deals with the player and his agent on a new contract. In a trade the team gives the other team compensation for the player and assumes his contract. The compensation was fair for a player of Parsons abilities and age. Clark wasn't playing up to his contract.
Love had the ball stripped at the 4 second mark. Walker let the pass rusher get by him for the fumble. What was the play called and where were his first three reads? Love runs, for the most part, what LaFleur calls. Whether it's a long developing play or short. Regardless, Love played one of his best games against the Cowboys.
Same for the dump off (your term) to Golden. Was he the first read? Same for Wilson. Was the play designed for the running back to get the ball?
The interception was terrible, but your depiction of the Browns defense is all wrong. They were probably the number one defense in week three.
You have refused to implicate LaFleur in the end of game mismanagement. Why? He might have called plays for Golden and Wilson playing not to lose.
You're right in calling out the 14 point spread against the Bengals. It easily should be 21+.

There is no comparison between Parsons and Reggie White!!

Reggie was an all around defensive player - as good at stopping the run as rushing the passer.

Micah is one dimensional and he sure has a BIG MOUTH.

Reggie did his talking on the field.

As for Wolf and Gutekunst - Gutekunst couldn't carry Wolf's shoes nor Ted Thompson's jock!!!

I agree with you on Reggie—he was all world. But, Reggie liked to talk. It was said of him that he called for more team meetings than a Secretary of State.

I still have belief in the Defense. They played well but then collapsed badly late in the 3rd quarter and in the 4th. Dallas' defense did too. Both were gassed.

The killer was the Packers driving for a late TD in the 4th and the STs promptly gave up a KR to midfield. Dallas needed just 4 plays for a TD.

But the Defense fought back in OT...holding the Cowboys to a FG after a long drive where it looked dire...but they stopped them on 3rd down and goal. At least that showed me some "want to".

Micah can talk big this week.

Bengals are dead last - 32nd in yards per rushing attempt at 3.1 yards per carry and 31st in passer rating at 75.

They are desperate enough to sign 40 year old joe Flacco.

We usually don’t hit on number 1 draft picks anyway

Ted Thompson. Derek Sherrod. That defense linemen who played 6 games maybe. Justin Harrell guy.

Let’s see datone jones. Randall

Kevin king not 1st round close enough

Aaron rogers feel into our lap. He didn’t pick him. Feel into our lap

Find the bread and butter 2-5 rounds

No TJ watt. Come on

Rogers feel into our lap.

He did get Matthew’s Bulga Clark

He screwed up many. And that was the plan. We don’t really ever want to pay 1 round money unless really good talent

Come on people you should now that only certain positions

Micah is a player. Plays when he wants ..

TT tried to trade picks, for more picks.
That way he had more chances for success.
It worked for him.
Especially when you consider the OL that he picked.
For every bad player, he did find a good player.
And Give him credit for the CM3 trade.
He knew when to draft a position early.
The problem was his staff was raided.

His health went down, and the waters became
to muddy for him to navigate.

My response is that Micah is the upgrade
you need for your team now.
The past is the past. And risks are worth taking.

Should that give Gute a free pass on his picks?
No - Period!
TT never had to look good on paper.
He could find All-pros.
Gute just buys them.

Detroit has one loss, and plays in KC tonight.
SF and Tampa each have one loss, and will play each other today.

Green Bay has one loss. They play at home against Cincy today.

If the Packers win today, we'll be about 1/3 of the way through the season with a 3-1-1 record. If Detroit loses, we'll be in first place in the division.
