Cory's Corner: What A Difference A Year Makes

The Packers defense just woke up the entire NFL.

Well that escalated quickly.

The Lions came into Lambeau Field having gone 3-1 in the last four regular season games in Green Bay. Detroit — yes, Detroit — was one of the most prolific offenses last year by being ranked No. 1 in points and No. 2 in yards.

The Packers not only pulled out the Lions teeth, but they declawed them by winning 27-13 thanks to a tuned-up defense highlighted by Micah Parsons, who was playing his first game as a Packer.

“I thought he was pretty impactful in the limited snaps that he played,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur.

Parsons only played 45 percent of the Packers defensive snaps but he made everybody better. He had a sack and a hurry opened up holes and lanes for everyone else up front.

That defense was just different. The entire unit looked like it was on roller skates. They were flying to the ball and it wasn’t unusual to see 4-6 green jerseys swarming to the ball carrier at any given time. Jahmyr Gibbs only rushed for 19 yards on Sunday, which was his lowest output since he tallied 17 in Week 2 as a rookie in 2023.

Just the mere presence of Parsons made Jared Goff think twice and it also caused him to hurry a throw that was picked off by Evan Williams late in the first half. Speaking of Goff, his average depth of target on Sunday was only 4.2 yards. Since Goff became a Lion in 2021, he has tallied eight games where has posted an average depth of target less than five yards. Conversely, Jordan Love’s average depth of target was 10.8 on Sunday as he casually slung the ball all over the place.

“It’s like watching a highlight film,” said Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, whose unit registered four sacks and nine tackles for loss. “I kind of want to downplay this thing a little bit, but I’m excited that he’s here.”

And just think about it, Parsons generated this much excitement after only playing 30 snaps. There were 12 guys that played more than him, including Lukas Van Ness, who Parsons is really rooting for this season.

“I think Van Ness is going to have his best year yet this year,” said Parsons about the third-year pro that has averaged 2.5 sacks a season. “I’m going to make sure of it. That guy is a very selfless player. He’s very selfless. He’s one of those guys that can go anywhere, he plays the run, he does everything. He’s the high-quality player that you just want to be around. So I’m going to make sure that guys gets as many plays as possible. I believe in him, and I told him, I said, ‘I think you can be like a Cameron Wade. You can be like a Julius Peppers.”

Those are monumental words from Parsons. Peppers played for the Packers from 2014-2016 and helped Green Bay go 32-16 in that span — including two NFC Championship Game appearances.

I know it’s just one game, but we all just witnessed a statement. This team looks different than other roster constructions. That is nearly unbelievable because of just one player, but that player barely played and he still caused a huge impact.

The rest of the league is currently on notice.

I love that Tucker Kraft called Brian Branch a Pu$$y. It was entirely warranted after Branch ripped Kraft’s helmet off and threw it. Kraft schooled him proper with the TD.

Bigger point was Kraft’s response was a window into the mindset of this team. The Packers showed up to spank the living crap out of the Lions. A mindset we’ve all looked forward to seeing in this Jordan Love era.

Was that brought on by this one trade? It looks like a confident toughness has been infused throughout this entire team as a result. Serious 1996 vibes.

Heard Parsons taking about LVN and it was music to my ears. Not only does Lukas find himself getting better coaching from Covington, in walks one of the biggest badasses to play DE in today’s NFL as a new friend, teammate and mentor.

Bueno.

LVN also isn't changing positions again (went from DT > 4-3 DE > 3-4 DE > 4-3 DE over 4 years including college) and has the same scheme in back to back years as well.

Nice to hear Parsons wants to coach LVN.
Between the addition of new DL coach Covington and Parsons, the DL will continue to shine-built in accountability.

Corry, that win wasn't just because of one player unless you think it was because he fired everyone up. I'll grant you it was exciting to see, and I hope it keeps going. Gute's depth on the O-line has already been put to the test successfully, and I hope it won't have to be continually tested.

Zach Kruse put on Twitter that "Per NFL Pro, Jared Goff got rid of the ball more than half-second quicker (2.80 seconds) with Micah Parson on the field than when he wasn't (3.36 seconds)." That is a HUGE difference in time. That means that the secondary isn't having to cover as long, it means that pressure is getting there OR Goff is seeing ghosts. Both of those are good things. Lets hope this keeps happening the rest of the season.

If I understand the point of this article Cory is saying that the only reason the defense looked so much better was because the Packers traded for Parsons and Parsons presence whether he was on the field or not elevated this defense especially the line play. He neglected to mention the other main change in the defense. The Packers brought in DeMarcus Covington who was with the Patriots for 8 seasons and coached under Bill Belichick and was the DC last year. The Patriots have had a decent defense for awhile.

Go ahead and crown Parsons the king of the defense if you want. He is one player that the Packers gave up a lot to get. He was with the team just over a week before the game. Covington has been here for months. Who do you think had more impact?

I guess the team is now known as the Green Bay Parsons. This fan will wait and see what happens.

How much longer are you going to be a negative Nellie regarding Parsons? I used to enjoy reading your comments. But they have become a more of a rant, hoping for failure, just so you can say "I told you so!"

It reminds me of a sales rep I managed. He was fairly productive. But whenever we met in the field or talked on the phone it was always negative. Complaining. Whining. When I would ask "so what do you think we should do?" He'd say "I don't know!" That was usually the end of the discussion. I'd say "if you can't give me a place to start, what am I supposed to do?

So what do you want the Packers to do? Trade Parsons? Beg Dallas to take him back?

It is abundantly obvious Parsons supercharged the Packers Defense on Sunday with limited snaps. With good health he will continue to do so. So has Cooper. So has Xavier. So has Covington. So has Hafley. So has Gutey with his acquisitions by the draft and free agency. This happens when a good team comes together...with football being the consummate team sport.

Accept the success.

So if I understand you correctly to be a fan you have to support everything that the team does. I will admit that I am pessimistic first.

I will admit that Parsons is a good player. My point has always been he is not worth two first rounds and a quality DT and the amount of cap space he is taking up.

Almost everyone here is blindly following the trail that Parsons is going to lead us to win the SB. I do not buy it. He is one guy. How about we write about the team. My kids have always wanted to buy me a jersey and asked me which one I want and my answer is I am not a fan of one player I am a fan of the team. All of my Packers garments are Green Bay Packers not one player. I look for memorabilia that is Green Bay Packers not a team member.

This is a team and a team effort which includes the coaches.

Cheeze, I also had my concerns about how much they would give up to get Parsons. But, after the trade , analyzing the salary cap implications and watching Parsons film I changed my mind to optimism. The salary cap of Love and Parsons gives this team a 3 year window to win it all. I’m not a big win it all or nothing type of fan, but this one reminds me of going after Reggie White (not comparing the two players) and that worked out great with 2 SB’s and 1 win.

Now, after watching him make an huge impact against what was the highest scoring offense, I’m all in. He did this while not at full strength or knowledge of the defense calls.

No, you do not understand me correctly...at all. Because your partial understanding is while wearing your blinders.

I have been critical of the team many times. The three futile years of Barry Ball, for example.

Make a list. I do this often. Positives of the Parsons deal the left. List the negative on the right. Make both lists with a clear eyed honesty and it will help assuage your bitterness toward the Parsons' acquisition.

The Positives will far outweigh the negatives.

It is completely unfair to say "almost everyone here is blindly following" that Parsons will win the Packers a SB. Most everyone here knows football and can evaluate results. This is simply a risk/reward opportunity that rarely presents itself. Your decision would be to play it safe and avoid risk. I get it. Others would take the risk to secure an elite player.

The Packers did not take your path. It is not personal.

My point has always been he is not worth two first rounds and a quality DT and the amount of cap space he is taking up. -

1. The 2 first rounds picks would have been in the 20s range.
Based on MLF and GBs record/ playoff making ability.
(Gute's pickings in the past 20 range weren't game changers.)
2. You wanted a DT in this last draft anyway.
The Dt position is a 3year learning period. Wyatt??
3. Kenny Clark wasn't in his prime.
Parsons is entering it and still took
on double teams like Clarke use too.

The cap space sends the can down the road again.
With the youngest roster in the NFL.
The "all in" lights the Fire in our players/ Fan base.

The TEAM took it to playoff contender Sunday.
The Parsons "PUMP up" was a trade needed!

Wyatt should be a double digit sacks guy this season, as long as he avoids injury. Covington is letting him play to his strengths as a 3-Tech. He has the speed inside and off the Stunt Game. He has moves like Sapp. The reason he was given the Fifth Year Option, guaranteed $ 12.9 M cash. The Parson's deal was a no-brainer. I thought he would have to give Jones another Two Pick, but they picked his pockets.

I very much agree with your first paragraph CH72. The front seven just looked different (better) against the Lions even without Parsons. Was it Covington, was it a second year under Hafley, was it young player development, was it all of the above.......IDK, but I love it. The Packer defense is going to be better this year and would have been better even without Parsons.

I do believe Parsons adds an elite talent to an already improved defense. I wish you could enjoy that fact a little more CH72. This might be a special team to watch this year and I hope you can enjoy it as much as I plan to.

Guam, I believe this goes to the impact permeating now throughout the entire Packers team.

Top down accountability. The players have had immense buy-in under a still learning LaFleur, after suffering the AR dramas and the cap circus it took to move him to NYJ. Barry hits the road. Hafley brought in.

Gutekunst nabs top shelf FAs in Jacobs & McKinney last year. More buy-in from the players. More accountability shown by Gutekunst and LaFleur. Covington brought in at DL Coach. Dead weight players released in Myers and Jaire, replaced by Banks & Hobbs signings by Gutekunst this year.

Then the monumental trade happens with Micah Parsons in, Kenny Clark out. Being it was Parsons, the players and staff realized, Packer management has their backs. Cards pushed all-in to win.

Wyatt, Brooks & Wooden realize the trust their GM & HC has in them to progress forward in their careers. We’ve seen this young team show accountability, self-scouting, put in the extra work to succeed for 3 years in a row now. The NFL’s youngest team in each of those years.

I’ll be damned if this isn’t the exact same kind of buy-in we witnessed in 1996 with Ron Wolf bringing Keith Jackson and Eugene Robinson in to, in essence, complete the circle. That was a much older team, but they saw Wolf & Holmgren had their backs.

I find all of this quite remarkable.

Maybe it's Covington, or maybe it's replacing two big uglies (Slaton and Clark) who played a lot of snaps with smaller, faster, upfield DTs and playing to their strengths.

And maybe it’s better use of the ILBs and play from that position as well. It’s the first time both Cooper and Walker have really played together.

I do not think it’s just one thing. That’s not discounting Parsons. I’ve long believed and observed that the issues we have rushing are excessive similarity and a lack of elite speed and agility to diversify the threat and finish plays off either directly or by flushing them into the other rushers. We got penetration a lot. Too few of those ended up in hands on the QB. Parsons fixed that, draws attention and is able to exploit weaknesses we previously couldn’t.

However, I do think the Lions blew their best shot. They never really challenged the middle. We came out in base expecting a good dose of Montgomery against a rookie and Wooden. It never came. I’m not sure Washington have the horses for that, but sooner or later we are going to get attacked in the middle concertedly. Then we will find out how well we can hold.

Make no mistake though, the Gibbs approach of Detroit was defeated not by Parsons, Wyatt or Gary, but by Cooper and Walker. They had a big role in shutting down the long game, but the difference in Sunday was that Detroit no longer could simply feed off the near instant short passes that wrecked us in December. We were too fast and tackled too well.

I was glad to see Lukas Van Ness get the start on Sunday. Now people can stop saying he hasn't started a game since high school. Will it be his only start of the season though? Parsons may replace him in the starting lineup in a week or two. Or maybe Parsons will replace Isaiah McDuffie in the 4-3, which is the defense that may be on the field on the first play. If you want to have your best front 7 out there, Van Ness is probably better than McDuffie.

I was asking myself the same thing. There are other options too. They were both lining up everywhere on the line last Sunday so either could move inside if they want and think it's more about speed and pass rush this week. I know one thing. They aren't facing Goff this Thursday and #1 won't catch up to this one as easily as he got his sack on Sunday. So, they better play fast and keep to their rushing lanes and contain.

I think that makes sense against very athletic QB’s like Daniels. You would have two very good Edge players to set the Edge and 3 very quick LB’s to go sideline to sideline. That’s an interesting concept, I like it. That said, against a player like Goff I like Parsons on the line where he can disrupt at a quicker pace.

What I don’t see from Washington is a power run threat between the tackles. Granted it’s only been one game, but what they are most excited about is Croskey-Merrit, a Gibbs-like rookie. They do have a big back option, but he’s behind a stable of smaller, fast outside the tackles types. They are going to run, but the likelihood is it’s Daniels or a Gibbs type.

I think this plays to us using Wooden, Wyatt and Brooks to attack the center, while the edge holds. Could that mean more base with Parsons and Hopper? Might be a sound strategy against a QB likely to run and have designed plays and a stable of speedy backs that seem to be their hoped for bread and butter.

Washington's backfield between Daniels and the rookie whose name I can't remember is about speed. They're going to play to get to the edges.

That said, the Packers did a pretty good job against running QBs last year (except in the playoffs). I'm looking forward to this one.

The frequency is likely limited. After all, that’s where Wyatt and Brooks would expect to excel as 3ts and Wooden as NT based on the use last week as well as his athletic profile. If Cox is out and Sorrel not ready, then moving an DE inside seems even less likely to occur often. Instead we may see more snaps for Brooks to try and avoid over use of the healthy DEs, not more of them playing inside as well.

Parsons seeing the potential in Van Ness and mentoring him shows what a team oriented player he is. Showing Van Ness how to execute some of his pass rush moves can only help. There were a few plays where Van Ness (at DT) and Parsons (DE) played side by side on the right side of the DL and completely collapsed the pocket with relentless pressure. Parsons is a leader on the field and off it.

Kenny is the same way. Players looked up to him because of his talent while leading in practice, in games, in meetings and the locker room. Parsons helps fill the void left by Kenny's leadership.

Covington has had tangible, positive impacts on the DL. Van Ness, Wooden, Wyatt, Gary, Enagbare all looked good on Sunday. Parsons is only to add to the new look DL. Covington had some beautiful stunts designed, executed perfectly. But the constant swarming to the ball was so impressive.

We have a surplus of WR's, especially when Watson comes back. Might be a good idea to entertain a trade with KC for Doubs. If the price is right.

I would definitely endorse a trade of Doubs.

Let's say they have a quality CB to put into a trade. We lack depth there and we will soon have a surplus at WR. Makes sense to me.

I get that, but why Doubs specifically? His is the name that always comes up in these scenarios. It doesn't make sense to me.

It's partly because Doubs is in the last year of his contract, and the Packers may not re-sign him due to all the other WRs on the roster. So people figure they may as well get something for him. I don't want them to trade Doubs, though. They need him this year, and if he leaves in free agency, at least they will get a compensatory draft pick.

I don't understand why so many on here want to get rid of Doubs. I could argue he is the most dependable, clutch WR on the team. He certainly seems to have Love's trust.

As far as "if the price is right", that could be applied to most players. I, for one, think it would be a mistake.

I am not on the trade Doubs idea...and I don't believe it will happen. He was the best WR on the field Sunday.

Some say trade for a CB...a starting CB? Otherwise it is a bad deal. And many teams don't even have 2 CBs with Doubs talent and production to be willing to give one up... let alone a 3rd CB they'd part with worth Doubls in value.

Do you want to win this year? I don’t wish to be blunt, but his is the one role we might not be ready to replace yet. If you doubt me go look at Golden’s blocking on Sunday and then think about what Doubs is called in to do on the majority of snaps.

We could trade Reed if Watson is indeed back and effective without too much difficulty in the sense that Golden could do more in the slot and probably would at that point. We could perhaps trade Wicks as Golden could interchange with Watson. However, if Doubs is out then the chances are it’s Heath, and that’s a significant downgrade I’m not swallowing in a win now window.

Golden will be just fine, give him sometime. Golden can also play every WR position. We have a much bigger problem at CB if we get injuries. If we can get depth/starter CB I'd do it. Sure, it worked against Detroit without Dobbs, but that isn't going to work week in and week out. I didn't like the Dobbs trade because of his injury history.

Golden will be fine, but that doesn’t immediately add strength or blocking technique. This year he’s clearly not physically ready to replace Doubs seamlessly. If you really want to trade without downgrading capability now, then you are by looking in the wrong place.

Reed has two years left on his contract. Doubs would be the trade piece, but nobody will give up a higher pick for him with the concussion history. He has the clutch hands and Reed didn't bring in the strike from Love.
See if they move one of the WRs when Watson is ready.

Win now is not a time to trade a player starting on merit. The two are contradictory.

Good point.

It is clear the coaches are not yet ready to open the playbook for Golden. On one play, he needed to make a crack back block and completely whiffed and his assignment ran free past him and completely disrupted Jacobs' run.

Golden is going to be a stud...and the rookie will continue to grow. I do recall many rookie Packer receivers taking most of their rookie season learning and not getting many targets. Adams, Jordy, Driver, Cobb. Doubs was a bit of an exception as he, like Jennings impressed as rookies quickly learning the routes and assignments. Both had over 40 receptions.

Damn, I love this leadership. Much more than empty words, it's a culture-changing/establishing endorsement by the lead dawg. That's the teammate you'll die for.

Made me smile! Parsons sees the inner "Hercules" to be unleashed. We have all seen LVN's talent flash...he just needs to stack more plays and on Sunday, he did! Having one of the best pass rushers in the NFL in your corner can only feed his continued growth.

Until Parsons Sunday catch up take down sack of Goff, tracking him down like a sidewinder missile, some of the fastest takedowns seen have been LVN flying to the ball for tackle behind the LOS.

" Peppers played for the Packers from 2014-2016 and helped Green Bay go 32-16 in that span — including two NFC Championship Game appearances. "

Parsons, just don't tell a guy to get down after an INT when you have a clear path to FG range. I kid, I kid, Peppers was great but always return the ball into their territory if possible unless you kneel the clock out.

Looking at the box score there are a couple of things that stood out. The Packers on 16 completions and 22 passes targeted 10 different players, no one being targeted more than 5 times. Gibbs for the Lions had 10 targets. I don't think they want the RB with 10 targets but that was a result of Goff not feeling comfortable and finding his outlets. Porta was next with targets with 9. The Lions couldn't get the ball down field. The run game for the Lions was completely shut down which might get more excited than anything else. To hold a team that prides itself on establishing the run to 2.1ypc is a thing of beauty.

"What a difference a year makes"

I'll point to AR's post-game interview in 2019 after they came back and beat the Bears and he said: We have a defense now!

A great first game.
1-0 with some really encouraging play last week.

This is a new week...0-0, with a team with another playoff contender on the schedule.
Build on what they did last week, and go 1-0 this week.

"That defense was just different. The entire unit looked like it was on roller skates."

Um, Cory, this is usually a reference to something BAD for players.

I noticed the roller skate thing too. Just like when Cory was celebrating that the Packers had rolled the dice, and they came up snake eyes!

I enjoyed game one, for obvious reasons.
They Won, they looked good doing it.
We needed it against a strong NFC N. team

Enjoy it...but it's game one of 17.
Detroit has a new Def. coordinator, and a new Off. coordinator.
This team is going to get better, it just is.

Going into this game, i thought what i think about most Lions game i've watched.
Expect this Lions team to fight for four quarters.. Like they have since D. Campbell became head coach.

This Lions teams looked like a work in progress, probably because it is.

Great win by the Packers (no doubt), they deserve their flowers.
But would the Packers look like they did, if they had two new coordinators?

Just my .02
GPG!!

Great week one
