Cory's Corner: The Vaunted Third Year
This is the year that Jordan Love needs to show growth and consistency.

The third year.
This is the year for Jordan Love.
Josh Allen (4,544 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 picks), Jalen Hurts (3,701, 22 and 6) and Joe Burrow (4,475, 35 and 12) all skyrocketed their status with huge third years.
“If he has that special ability to perform at the highest level during the most difficult times, you will see that emerge in Year 3,” said former NFL executive Bill Polian in 2023. “At the conclusion of year three — and only then — will you know with a firm degree of certainty that you have the person who can lead you to championships.”
We all saw surprising things in Love’s first season as a starter in 2023. He passed for 4,159 yards, with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Last year, he battled injuries but still passed for 3,389 yards.
There are still plenty of people that are unsure about what Love brings. They want to see more, especially in big spots. He’s 1-2 in the playoffs thanks to five touchdowns and five interceptions. I think Love is the guy. He has shown plenty of poise, especially after taking over for Aaron Rodgers.
The problem is his supporting cast. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are questionable for Week 1 and Christian Watson is out for awhile while he recovers from a torn ACL.
“When you talk about Aaron and what he did in his third year, I never try to compare because that’s just so hard to do,” Love during OTAs this summer. “There’s so many different situations that go on, but at the end of the day, I’ve been here in Year 6, going on my third year of playing. Everything is right there in front of us for this team.”
In Rodgers’ third season as a starter, he brought back the title to Titletown as the Packers beat Pittsburgh 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV. Ironically enough, Rodgers wasn’t a Pro Bowler that season, but a year before he was, by throwing 30 touchdowns and only seven interceptions — and that team lost in the first round of the playoffs.
It’s the same way with Love. He doesn’t have to shoulder the load by himself to be a success. He just needs to realize that this team has many ways to win. That could be Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave or the fleet of wide receivers. There’s also the added layer of Love’s feet, which he barely utilized last year because of the sprained MCL he suffered in his left knee in the season opener.
This is Year 3 for Love. Last July, Love signed a four, $220 million extension, but this is when a quarterback is supposed to show real growth and consistency. If Love’s season resembles Trevor Lawrence’s (4,016 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions) third year, there will be more questions than answers.
If people aren’t sure right now, they will be roaring questions after the season. This is the season where the 26-year-old needs to take the next step.
Welcome to the volatile and unpredictable third year.

Love will be ok. Rely on the playmakers around him. Learn how better to protect himself and realize it's ok sometime to throw the ball away and punt then try to force it in there or take a sack. The reliable defense is something new he can rely on too.
How many seasons has it been since we didn't have doubts and questions about our kicking game?

I agree but I may not have the optomism you have. He has to show me growth before I get optomistic.
He also needs to learn to take what the defense gives him. Too many times he is throwing the deep ball and it looks like that is all he was looking to do. Brady was the master at taking what the defense gave him and let his receivers make a play.

He's not a bad runner. If he adds good decision making, knowing when the play just isn't there and running before his lane closes that'll help a lot. Also delivering the short way throws; I think the errors there must be mental, maybe taking a completion for granted or something. Neither are major adjustments, but would improve the outcome drastically.

Lets hope all the injury questions rectify themselves quickly and affirmatively. Including his own.
Planning on a great season full of health, achievement and wins.
But always wary of pitfalls seen and unseen.

"Welcome to the volatile and unpredictable third year."
Well-said, until that last sentence. This is supposed to be the year that is NOT volatile and unpredictable.

So, using the transitive property, "volatile and unpredictable" = "vaunted"?

I am not convinced that injuries was what made Love regress, or at least is only partial. Perhaps it affected a couple games. Love missed too many shots, missed seeing open receivers, and made questionable decisions on where to target at times, and even when not particularly hindered by injuries, didn't take an open lane to run for a first down at times that seemed obvious on the screen. Love has plenty to prove, and while he doesn't have to shoulder the team to a Superbowl, he kind of does need to. It is the QB that is most able to make everyone better, or not. I think he'll have a great season. He needs to. He is paid to.

Allot of those open looks and lanes were because he was getting pushed from up the middle and even when he got the pass off there was a 1 in 3 chance that the receiver was going to drop it.

There is No doubt, he'll continue to grow.
The problem is; can he win in the play-offs.
Based on his last game.
No.
Based on his accuracy.
No
Based on comparisons.
No
All Baseless-
if the packers win the super-bowl.

The only way he can prove he can win in the playoffs is if he wins a superbowl?
Does that mean Aaron Rodgers couldn't win in the playoffs of all but one of his NFL seasons?

He already resoundingly beat the 2nd seed in his first year starting in the playoffs. So yes he can win in the playoffs.

The trouble is that it’s his fifth year, not his third. He should have already made his third year leap.

It's actually his sixth year, but yes, clearly he should've made his third year leap while he was sitting on the bench.

But he wasn't just sitting, he was being coached, running teams in practice, etc, he's a vet now no more "still young" excuses...his accuracy has to improve for one thing...

His accuracy is flippin' EXCELLENT. He's just not consistent with it, and the reasons are beyond obvious. I'm very glad to see Gutey prioritize the O line, even though we don't yet see that materializing as hoped. Usually he had monsters all up in his grill a split second after his release, and never has he had time in the pocket for a coke and a smoke. ALL his footwork problems first showed up AFTER having to operate under that kind of pressure. And he's gotten much quicker at getting the ball out. That's not aligned with good judgment on every throw, and consistently amazing accuracy. This is why I want to see him quicker to tuck the ball and run when the intended play just isn't there. So I'm glad to hear JL10 say that's something he's been working on.

Favre's SB season occurred in his 6th year in the NFL, 4th year as starter. Rodgers in his 6th NFL season, 3rd year as starter. Love is in his 6th NFL season, 3rd as starter.
For several decades now, you could say the Packers have the best prepared QBs in the NFL. Certainly steady improvement in QB play helped lead the march to a SB in their 6th NFL seasons.
And for Favre, Rodgers, and Love a 2nd contributor was a great help to a Lombardi...an improving Defense that was stellar for Favre and Rodgers in their 6 year in the NFL. Will Love get the stellar complementary D this year, his 6th?
Schumer's Packers were the #1 in the NFL in 1996. Capers 2010 D was his best during his Packer tenure...top 5 in the NFL. Hafley's D was #5 last year...this season?
The similarities between the Packers and their last 3 QBs is remarkable.
I do recall Ron Wolf's plan for the Packers to get back to Championship football: He said get a top QB then surround him with an excellent DEFENSE.

Interesting.
When I look at Cincinnati you can see Wolf's point.
KC too.

I believe this is a prove it year for the regime as a whole. Can the team take a step as a whole? Can the D continue the strides of last year and can the O develop the ability to play consistently and win tactical battles at the outset and during games?
Are players developing and the O and D lines playing as units and delivering results? Are we catching balls and showing an intermediate game? Are we effecting covering the short middle of the field?
Love is part of that certainly, but he’s also just one element in a wider test for me. He’s not divorced from what goes on around him and nor is the relationship one way. This season likely has a considerable significance for those off the field, perhaps more so than those on it.

I have to disagree somewhat with those saying he should have already made the leap. His path has been a bit different, with COVID, and the injuries last year. As many coaches and GM's say, you need the playing time in games, to truly improve. Probably more so at QB than any other position.
If the core players can stay somewhat healthy, I'm bullish on this team. Jacobs at times can be a one man wrecking crew. Replacing Meyers with Jenkins should solve the constant pressure up the middle that plagued the offense last year and give Love a cleaner pocket to work from. Get the running game going and let Jordan get it to his play makers. Good defense that should be even better this year.

GB hasn't lost a game! Lol. Lots of reasons to be optimistic,, yes. Amazing talent they had to cut meaning those on the roster are even better; although sometimes the difference is minute.
A LOT of things have to go right for any team to win the SB, so I'm not skeered that GB also needs a lot of things to go right. Right now, that's mostly this rash of injuries proving to be insignificant and the sort of thing that makes them tougher. If these are mostly lingering annoyances that only get worse through the season? That is a possibility, and we'd get to pick early in the round next year.

The keys for Love this season will be remaining injury free and the OL. In addition Love needs to make better decisions and use his legs to pick up first downs when plays beak down. If he can do that he will have a good to great season and so will the Packers.
The bottom line is that the Packers need Love to take the next step on evolving into an elite QB. Thanks, Since '61

I think Love is going to have a good season. But, regardless of how well he plays, if the players around him aren't good, we won't win a Super Bowl.

Other than Simmons, nothing that might be surprising as yet. The rest were PS candidates, if anything.

Did Love really improve his footwork? I think he picked up some bad habits (throwing off his back-foot) from latter-day Rodgers.
Love has not done the footwork 'work' which will impact his accuracy.

A sixth year oft injured QB who makes bad decisions and with little training camp playing time and yet another injury. Protected by an injury riddled O line. Throwing to an injury riddled squad of WR who struggle to catch. An underperforming D line who struggle to get to the QB and an unremarkable CB room already dealing with injuries. Facing a brutal schedule trying to overcome the second best team in the NFC while fending off arguably the best roster in the NFCN and the perennial offseason winners. Yes, Love had best make that third year starters leap. Three NFCN teams will not make the postseason and if Love fails to progress the new GM will be picking in the top 12 at the April draft. Time to put on my rose colored glasses…

OK, here is the Answer.
In 2004,the Packers opened the season on the road against the defending NFC Champion Panthers. The Packers RBs touched the ball 50 times that day. It wasn't always pretty, but it was a win on the road against a good team.
So MY thinking is, we should just do this again. I think this line and this group of backs can do it. Keep it simple and just run over Detroit. I don't believe they'll be able to stop us. Take the pressure off of Love and the receivers. We don't need style points, we need a win at home against a division rival.

at home against the second best team in the division. should win, but won't overreact if they don't. play in rhythm, stay healthy.

I hope we don't get too cute. Keep the ball in the hands of the people who protect it, be patient, and push people out of the way.
It's a long season and we can show off the entire package, but for this first game, we should ride Jacobs and Company.

I agree with this take with one concern, Love's thumb. Will they be running from under center or from shotgun? If it's shotgun, running 50 times will be tough unless they can exploit an eventual 8 man box with something deep now and then.
