5 Takeaways From Packers 10 - 30 Jets: Defensive Front Shows Promise

Green Bay could have some real depth on their defensive front, with multiple young defenders making splash plays on Saturday night.

After waiting over six months for a taste of Packers football, fans were quickly reminded that the preseason is mostly not real football. Here are five takeaways from Green Bay’s ugly preseason opener:

Drops plague Packers receivers, except one

It is absolutely not time to panic regarding Green Bay’s drop issues from 2024 bleeding into the 2025 season, but it was still frustrating to see drops from Packers pass catchers, particularly when they came from more experienced players like Romeo Doubs, Mecole Hardman and Malik Heath.

The drops from other receivers made Matthew Golden’s impressive sticky hands, which have been the talk of training camp, look even better in contrast. Good things happened when he was targeted, which is hopefully a harbinger for things to come. Golden is ticking all the boxes so far.

Defensive front showing promise

If Saturday is any indication, the Packers could have some enviable depth at both defensive tackle and end, as Green Bay’s most promising performances of the night came from their defensive front.

From looking like he would be struggling to keep his job, Colby Wooden suddenly looks like a new player. Sporting a bulkier frame, he has earned positive reviews in camp and backed up the hype in the first preseason game as a consistently disruptive force.

Meanwhile, the rookie duo from Georgia of Nazir Stackhouse and Warren Brinson also made their presence felt on the interior, continuing their upward trajectory which has built throughout the summer.

At EDGE, Barryn Sorrell is already showing why he was viewed as a steal in the fourth round, rushing with power and professionalism to put the Jets quarterback under pressure regularly.

Brenton Cox Jr and Kingsley Enagbare made their own strong cases for roster spots and playing time with some notable plays. Lukas Van Ness only played one drive with the starting defense, but looked more confident and impactful, giving credence to the optimism around his camp.

Monk and Rhyan need to switch positions

There are no hard and fast rules with the Packers and how they use their offensive linemen. Players move around constantly and the team always seems to find a winning combination, but the way Jacob Monk and Sean Rhyan are being deployed currently does not seem optimal.

Monk, a college center, played at guard on Saturday, as he often has in practice, while Rhyan, a college tackle who has played guard for the last two years for Green Bay, played center.

Both players seemed to have some struggles, Monk more obviously so. The second-year player out of Duke seems more suited to play center in terms of his physical dimensions, while Rhyan’s more stout frame projects better to guard.

Rhyan is in a contract year, so training him to potentially play center is unlikely to yield any long term results, even if it means he is capable of playing there in a pinch this season. The Packers seem to be overthinking this one.

Linebackers struggle in coverage

It was not a banner night for the Isaiah’s – McDuffie and Simmons – who both looked a little lost at times at linebacker.

McDuffie was deeked by a running back (ironically named Isaiah) into thinking he was being thrown the ball downfield, while quarterback Justin Fields ran the ball in for a touchdown within shouting distance of the Packers linebacker.

Simmons bailed out of a zone in coverage which looked like the wrong decision as a Jets tight end caught a pass and galloped for a bunch of yards. He showed some of the issues which have caused him to fail to establish himself as a starting linebacker in the NFL.

Don’t sweat it

Around this time last year, when the Packers were whipped 27-2 by the Broncos in the second week of the preseason, I wrote: “The frustration of fans should come from having watched a truly pointless game of football more so than anything that happened during said game.”

The same applies here. There was little to no joy to be found in Green Bay’s performance on Saturday night, but it means next to nothing of significance for what the Packers will be once real football begins.

This seems to be digging deep for optimistic spin in some instances. But I would agree that there's no reason to freak out as long as the ship shows signs of being righted in the next game.

It's time for the coaching staff to take a hard stance regarding the drops. You obviously want to give a veteran like Doubs a chance to redeem himself, but everyone else needs to be catching the football; if they don't, put someone else in.

Monk did more than "seem" to struggle. Maybe it was the position switch and maybe it wasn't, but the Packers are going to need a viable option for reserve center, and this was not it.

Defensive front: Promise is nice, but results are better. No sacks were recorded. But Cox did have an impressive TFL in the red zone. I would think he is almost assured of getting a roster spot. Wooden is probably going to have to continue to make plays to secure his. And here I'm reading LVN "looked more confident and impactful" for one drive. So what exactly does that tell us? I mean, really!

McDuffie and Simmons aren't known for their coverage skills, so nothing new here. Can't wait to see Cooper, and am hopeful that we'll see some improvement from Walker.

It's best top forget about this game, as each team had different objectives. The Jets were out to make a statement with their new head coach, and the Packers, well, just seemed to be interested in getting a few of the starters' feet wet and doing a lot of experimenting.

The main thing we need next game is for the offense to stabilize and carry on with much better execution (actually ANY execution) that results in solid drives that aren't heavily aided by defensive penalties.

Well for one thing the fans come to Lambeau and spent a whole lot of money only to see such a crap of a game, no intensity at all compared to the Jets...starting to have a few too many dud's at Lambeau the past couple of years...loyal fans deserve better at least at home...

Fans who pay to watch Preseason games should be aware of what they're getting into.

They're not regular season games. Teams are working out kinks in systems and using preseason games to workshop new concepts and evaluate.

It's like saying people who would pay to go to a table reading of a major motion picture script deserve to see special effects and fully orchestrated soundtracks. If you don't know what a table reading is, that's on you.

Lack of intensity hopefully doesn't carry through to the regular season. If it does, it will be a long season for all of us. Crispness of execution was non-existent. That does not portend well.

For me, the biggest disappointment was that they looked like last year. 2nd biggest disappointment is how injuries seem to be piling up already, and it doesn't seem like the typical overcautious preseason stuff.

Oh well, long way to game 17.

Monk took his first 12 snaps at center, and 24 at Guard.

It was during his 12 snaps that two balls were sent flying over the QB's head.

Rhyan struggled at Center as well, giving up pressure that led to a strip sack, but no, they shouldn't switch positions. You can't have your center tossing snaps up and over the QB's head. We haven't seen that kind of lousy QB exchanges since.. well, the last starting center the Packers had on the roster.

I don't remember the ball being snapped over the QB's head against the Jets. Are you sure you're not thinking of Family Night, when Donovan Jennings did that a couple times?

I don't remember that being a problem with Josh Myers either, if that's what you're implying.

I didn't get out of the hospital until today, so I didn't get to watch it, but I'd been reading all the comments and following on the net, etc. It always looks a lot different with your own eyes than it does in print.

Not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. This was the Jets second scrimmage., and half way through the second second quarter, it was 7-3 and we had the ball. So, even. Of course, then there was the sack/fumble on Willis and it went to 14-3 and we never got closer. But the point is these guys are a game ahead of us and we're playing them even.

Both teams stopped themselves, especially with penalties. It's hard to keep your offense on the field when you're getting called for holding.

Abikanda, Fitzpatrick, Belton, Morgan, Enagbare.....these guys all had good appearances.

Can we please stop trying to field punts inside our 10?

OK, rear view mirror.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Love, apparently , whacked his wrist and Willis fans will get a treat. Good. I think the rest of the next couple of weeks should be focused on the fundamentals, like running and playing defense, and being a lot smarter on special teams.

Our first plays in the game were Jacobs, Doubs, Doubs. If we keep the ball in the hands of the guys that we want, we're going to be in good shape. This game only shows that practice helps, because the Jets already had a practice game and we didn't. It showed.

“The frustration of fans should come from having watched a truly pointless game of football more so than anything that happened during said I don’t know. After watching that game it’s really concerning that we are tied for last place in the NFCN. Or third…or second.. OMG we are actually tied for first in games that count. All this angst over performance for players playing out of position while running vanilla play against a team trying to establish a new culture with players mostly UN chosen by the current regime is good practice for the season to come.

Who cares about drops

Love will get drilled based on the left guard players worse

Won’t be drops. Will be getting sacked.

That might be the end to the GM…that signing……

"the way Jacob Monk and Sean Rhyan are being deployed currently does not seem optimal."

Really? THIS is what you're going after? We know Rhyan is unlikely to be displaced as the starting RG. I have no problem with them cross-training him as a C. Virtually all of the Packers' past backup C have cross-trained at G. Even Josh Myers cross-trained in camp at G.

"Rhyan is in a contract year, so training him to potentially play center is unlikely to yield any long term results, even if it means he is capable of playing there in a pinch this season."

I think what this tells us is that they need someone who can play C on game day in case of injury, and they don't want it to be Tom. It also possibly means they don't see Monk as one of their best 7, and/or--if they do--they see him as too one-dimensional as a C to be a helpful game-day active.

"Simmons bailed out of a zone in coverage which looked like the wrong decision....He showed some of the issues which have caused him to fail to establish himself as a starting linebacker in the NFL."

First game, new system, but the concepts don't change that much for a vet, and he's had several practices to get the feel of the system. I share your concerns. Early optimism when playing without pads is looking more like someone who brings more athleticism than Welch and will need to demonstrate his STs prowess to make a difference (or even make he 53).

We know what the Packers have in McDuffie: plays hard, can play the run, fairly assignment sure, but not athletic enough to keep up with coverage responsibilities.

"It is absolutely not time to panic regarding Green Bay’s drop issues from 2024 bleeding into the 2025 season, but it was still frustrating to see drops from Packers pass catchers"

A couple of the early passes labeled as "drops" were defensed. A couple were just bad drops. A couple were guys turning to run before they secured the catch. Still, it's not too early to be concerned about issues from 2024 that should be cleaned up by guys who should be taking pride in their craft and wanting to earn that next--and bigger--payday. Drafting two WR early should be sending that message--not gonna sit around and wait for guys to clean up their acts.
