Packers Usually Look for Youth in Free Agency

Packers General Manager Brian Guteknust's favorite type of free agent is a player going into his second contract. There aren't as many of those players available heading into Week 2 of free agency.

After agreeing to deals with offensive lineman Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs on the first day of free agency, the Green Bay Packers are currently in wait-and-see mode for free agents from other teams.

As free agency enters Week 2 on Monday, the big names who are still available are guys who would make Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams in the last decade, not in the year 2025.

The names of the 30-somethings at edge rusher and wide receiver include: Matthew Judon, Z’Darius Smith, Von Miller, Stefon Diggs, Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen.

The type of free agent that has intrigued Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst are players entering their 5th season, the first year of their second contract. They’ve had a lot of success in going to that route of team building.

Since being promoted to GM in 2018, the biggest money he has spent on free agents from other teams have been players entering their 5th seasons. These players include: 2019 - Z’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Adrian Amos; 2024 - Xavier McKinney; 2025 - Aaron Banks and Nate Hobbs.

According to Pro Football Focus’ Top Free Agents available list, https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-ranking-the-best-available-2025-nfl-free-ag..., the only players in the top 10 who are entering that 5th season are Offensive Lineman Teven Jenkins and Cornerback Asante Samuel, Jr. Both of these players were second round picks in 2021 (like Banks was for the 49ers). In the group from 11 to 20, the only 2021 draft pick is Edge Rusher Azeez Ojulari.

According to CBS Sports’ free agent list, Ojulari was the 48th best free agent going into free agency. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2025-nfl-free-agency-tracker-updates-...

Ojulari, another former 2nd round pick in 2021 (50th overall), fits Gutekunst’s criteria for college preference (University of Georgia) and had a RAS score of 8.18 while coming out of Athens, Georgia.

With the New York Giants, Ojulari had 22 sacks in four seasons, starting 30 of 46 games as an Edge Rusher. With the need at the position, he would be a player who would be added to the rotation of Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare and Brenton Cox Jr.

At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds he’s a lot lighter than what the Packers have desired in their edge players in the last 10 years. In comparison, Enagbare had a RAS score of 6.26 coming out of South Carolina in 2022, but he’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 258 pounds. Enagbare has just 9.5 sacks in three seasons.

If the Packers are to make a move at a position of need, Ojulari makes the most of the players available at the moment. However, he would not be a signing that means that edge rusher isn’t still a psotiom of need in April’s draft. Even with the signing of Hobbs, it’s likely that cornerback is still toward the top of the team’s wish list for the draft as well.

Cheeshead TV writer Felipe Aceti went further into what Ojulari could bring to the Packers pass rush earlier this week in his free agent preview. https://cheeseheadtv.com/blog/azeez-ojulari-is-an-intriguing-free-agent-...

I think we should definitely be looking at Ojulari and Asante Samuel Jr right now. Not quite as sold on Moore due to his size, and I feel that some of the speed he has would be negated by playing on the grass at Lambeau for half the season.

This is not the full picture. It’s true of big money signings. Older players have tended to be post draft value additions. That makes sense because most older players are being paid for the past or at best for right now. A couple of seasons aside, we aren’t in a last dance or with a roster one player away from completion. We blew that last dancing too long and have since been retooling. We aren’t back there yet.

Ojulari does look interesting. I wonder why Asante Samuel has not been signed yet. I heard a lot about him before free agency began. The Packers got their CB now anyway.

If you are looking for a pattern for the Packers in free agency, it might be scheme fit. Maybe you could say that about any team, but the Packers really seem to target players who fit their offensive or defensive schemes, maybe even in a way that is superior to how they fit the team they are coming from.

I don't know that RAS means anything at all when considering free agents. Athletic testing matters for draft picks because it's a way to compare players who have played against different levels of competition in college. But once a player has been in the NFL for a little while, you can tell how he plays against NFL competition, so I think you can pretty much throw out the RAS. Xavier McKinney scored a 5.86 and Josh Jacobs scored a 5.72. Neither one of them were even as good as Kingsley Enagbare!

Asante Samuel is coming off a bad shoulder injury which he says got worse in practice after, preventing a return. It’s unclear if he can pass a physical, though he has met with a few teams apparently. He himself has suggested the shoulder may be a life long problem and that he came into the league with it in both shoulders in a less developed form than it now is in the injured one. He cited stinger like symptoms last year, which, with that, could mean it’s actually more a spinal origin problem manifesting in the shoulders. Teams may be wary of his future durability. He’s seeking to play though.

I agree……I’d stay away from a CB who has shoulder problems. All you have to do is look at Alexander who after injuring his shoulder hasn’t been the same aggressive run defender.

If we are looking to improve edge it is possible that James Pearce could be available at 23. Today big plays are often a matter of split seconds and fractions of an inch. This is why speed matters more today than in the past. If Edge is considered more important than WR or CB than Pearce is the guy for edge. His combine profile is 6'5 247 and runs a blazing 4.47 forty. Another great first rounder who might be there is WR Matthew Golden. He would be a great pick even though Gute never picks a WR in the first round. Did I mention a 4,29 forty?
Last option is CB. I would love to see them kiss an make up with Jaire Alexander and not worry about CB.

Yes—Pearce is also a good possibility.

We lost in the Playoffs because our WR's no showed most of the season and QB1 was underwhelming with 3 INT's....We did lose our NT stopping the run. #1 need is a HUGE UPGRADE at WR#1.....No matter what Gute does that needs to be a HIT at RD1.....So move up high Gute to get a day 1 starting WR1 top 2-3 WR in the draft. If not get the best DL available....but the pick-need is WR in RD1....or we are going nowhere this season. Just put another OL on the line and another TE and no huddle every play until they can stop it.

Personally, I think Gutey will make another FA addition; not sure who? My choice—Hendrickson…yes I know y’all, he’s not doing that. But, there’s some good options still available. I like Ojulari— KGB similarities.
Go Packers!!!

The large free agent expenditures are now over for Gutekunst. He will now go scavenging - looking for other lower-tier free agents , practice squad targets and training camp cast-offs - to add to the roster. Particularly players age 27 and under - i.e., De'vondre Campbell ( 27), Rasul Douglas (26), Corey Ballentine (25), Zayne Anderson (26) Ben Simms (22) etc.

I really like Ojulari as a free agent pick-up. Gives them a different type of edge rusher.Won't command huge dollars and could be had on a 2-3 year deal. This would free up the Packers to go WR or DT in the 1st round and pick whichever they don't get in the 1st with their 2nd round pick or potentially draft CB or OT depth. Right now they have too many needs to fill and only 3 premium picks (day 1 and day 2) to fill them.

I'm confused, at the end of the season last year, players were saying they needed more veteran leadership on the team but Gute prefers young and cheap players and judging from what I've seen so far this year I don't think he will be bringing in any vets, at least not ones that have anything left in the tank as most of the talent, young and old has now been picked over. Azeez Ojulari may be a guy we could use across from Gary but I don't see Gute making the move, I think he'd rather have another late round draft pick.

He brought in two veteranss in free agency. I think that's enough. There's only so much money, and when you get to the cheaper free agents, they aren't going to make much difference on the field, and they are probably not worth signing just for their experience.

I don't recall any players saying they needed more veteran leadership. Who said that?
