Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - It's All About the Depth (and Options)
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

Who says the Packers are cheap!!! I read today that including the signings of McDuffie and McManus, the Packers have spent the fifth-most money in the league on player signings so far this year. And don't come at me with how much they "overpaid" for Banks and Hobbs. First of all, I don't care how much players get paid - if it all fits in the salary cap, let them make what they can. If you've been paying attention at all, the expanded salary cap money has teams shelling out a bunch of dough to a slew of "average" NFL players. It is what it is. The only people that should be mad are the above-average players who got a contract last season that are now out-paid by the new crop of "expanded salary cap babies."
The Packers' two free agent signings are all about depth and having options. I never expected them to take a big swing at a DK Metcalf, or try to trade for a Myles Garrett or Trey Hendrickson. I did hold out some hope for Josh Sweat, so I'm a bit disappointed there. My only surprise about who the Packers did sign is that these players were not what you would call "premier" free agents, so for the Packers to go after them on day one mean they obviously have a specific plan in mind for them. The first part of there plan involves depth,
Assuming Jaire Alexander is really going to be gone, the Packers cornerback room consisted of Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon. making it by far the thinnest position group on the team. Yes, Javon Bullard played in the slot, but technically he's a safety. They HAD to get a cornerback - pronto! Why Hobbs? Options. I could see them using either Bullard and Hobbs in the slot depending on the situation - Bullard on running downs, Hobbs on obvious passing downs. There have been reports that Hobbs will also play at outside corner. This all allows Hafley to mix and match for specific teams, situations, down and distances, etc. It's what Hafley loves to do and Hobbs will be a nice chess piece for him.
As for Banks, the Packers' lack of offensive line depth became painfully clear against the Eagles in the playoffs when we had to watch Travis Glover and Kadeem Telfort try to fill the shoes of Elgton Jenkins. Neither are NFL-starter level at this time and may never be. It's my firm belief that you need to have two NFL-starter level backups on your roster for critical moments like the Packers faced in Philadelphia. They did not.
With Banks added and Morgan back from injury, the other thing this does is give the Packers options. Reports have circulated that the plan is for Jenkins to move to center and Banks to take over at left guard, the position he has played for the 49ers. This makes sense as they didn't just go get any guard, they went and got a starting left guard, knowing they are going to move Jenkins. So what do they do with Morgan? I firmly believe the Packers desperately (maybe too strong a word?) want him to compete with and win the left tackle job over Rasheed Walker. Why? Because Walker will be a free agent after this season, along with a host of other starters. They're not going to be able to pay Walker staring left tackle money and you have four more years of control with Morgan, so they would love for him to claim that job and have Walker be the swing tackle backup for a year. My opinion, but I feel strongly about this one. And no, I think it would be dumb to trade Walker, as I've seen many suggest. That puts you right back in the dangerous position of not having an NFL-starting level backup tackle.
Day two of the legal tampering period (who ever came up with that idea, anyway?) came and went without a peep from our Packers, which didn't surprise me. The free agent pickings were slim to begin with for deep threat wide receivers, so you have to expect that to be a draft priority at this point. Could this finally be the year the Packers select a wide receiver with their first pick? Imagine the delirium you would witness from the home-town Packers fans at the draft! Hey, a guy can dream....

I hoped they’d take a big swing at a pass rusher or DK. I still think they should have with DK. He is big enough that his game will still hold value deep into his deal as his speed leaves him. But what’s done is done.
Hendrickson is an interesting case. He is old. Perhaps only a year or two of elite play left. And he’s going to want 35m AAV.
As far as Banks is concerned, I disagree with Al. It was an overpay. It was also an expected overpay. Al is right on there. The salary cap going up, lots of money out there, and not a great crop of free agents out there. Classic. However, I do take some solace that while the Packers have shelled out the 5th most money, they’re in the bottom 10 of guaranteed money. Both of the guys they grabbed are on 4 year deals, not 3. And they have no guaranteed money after year one. On one hand, they “shelled out” but on the other, they have team options with not a ton of penalty on the cap if they move on after 1 year.
The LVN bust, Gary not being more than a “B” and Clark getting old is what is causing the DL problem right now. It’s a tough one to get out of. Hendrickson might be the only fix for a team that wants to contend for super bowls.

Bearmeat, isn’t the guaranteed money around 1 1/2 years and not 1 year? It’s ironic that you are call LVN a bust after year 2 and feel Hendrickson is the potential answer. Hendrickson, hardly even played in his first 2 years and only was a part time starter in his 3rd. It wasn’t till his 4th year that he truly busted out.

Packers never offered for Metcalf because Gutey learned the price tag would exhaust their cap. Geez, the Packers just crawled out of their crazy cap hell and returned to more normal finances. It makes no sense to return to crazy with a young, talented, mostly stable roster.
Bares need to replace 17 players this offseason, Lions 19, and the Ugly Purple 20. The Packers? Only 7.
Banks fits nicely in the cap...is in his prime as a 3 year LG starter in a zone blocking scheme who doesn't give up sacks, pressures and has ability to get the second level in the run game. Hobbs can work effectively inside or out and fits Hafley's "read and react" defense nicely. He also fits nicely in the cap.
Neither was an overpay...it was market pay due to demand with the growing 2025 cap.

Lambeau, I also think they didn’t go after DK because Gutey really values draft picks (especially this year because it’s in GreenBay:)) I think he’s confident he can find a very good WR in the second round that would’ve taken to get him.
After watching his tape I really like Hobbs versatility. Check out Basarski Production, he has a really good film breakdown on him. After seeing the guarantee on these two players, my only concern is Hobbs injury history as he only played around 4 more games than Alexander over the past 3 years.

4 games is nothing to sneeze at. That's more than half of what Alxander played this season. Didn't he only play in 7?

March 12, 2025 at 08:17 am
I agree, but it’s just a concern…If he stays healthy I think they picked up a really good versatile player. I like that he can play inside or out at the CB position.

Green Bay doesn’t need to placate a fan base or owner. Unlike many teams, we don’t need to worry about ticket sales or generating local market interest. By the time we pick, the draft will already be in full swing, people already present in Green Bay and the key to its success is likely not locals but the experience and interest of the rest of the League and fan base.

I tend to agree Banks is "overpaid" comparatively to his prior performance, however, I think he has room to grow, and really at the end of the day, the OL room got stronger with the Packers effectively moving on from Josh Meyers. I was legitimately afraid the Packers might retain Meyers because they didn't see a good crop of C's in the draft.. I'd rather pay Aaron Banks this money and immediately improve the line overall than see the Packers give a 2nd contract to a guy they drafted who was more of a liability than an asset.
From that standpoint, I'm fine with Banks signing. As far as DL, i'm less down on the Packers DL than most. I think we had an injury issue more than a talent issue in 2024 when it came to DL play. One caveat, I'm not sure our 3-4 OLB types are necessarily cut out to play traditional 4-3 DE roles, but I do like our true DTs and the pieces we move around a bit (Brooks, Wooden).
Draft will be key for DB's.

“And don't come at me with how much they "overpaid" for Banks and Hobbs. First of all, I don't care how much players get paid - if it all fits in the salary cap, let them make what they can.”
Respectfully, I have to disagree with this comment. Every dollar that goes to one player isn’t available to be used for the next, whether that be your own free agent or another. I realize that the salary cap goes up every year, but that doesn’t change the fact that the amount of dollars are limited by the current salary cap in each given year.
That said, now that the contracts have come out, the guarantee’s are quite low on Banks and Hobbs, so the devils in the details and the contracts aren’t as bloated as many of us might’ve thought. As we all know, all contracts aren’t the same and these two are a perfect example of illusion in the numbers. If you look at guaranteed money I suspect GreenBay wouldn’t be near the top 5 in money spent.
So, if player is playing at the level of the total monies the contract states than it’s a win-win….If the player isn’t performing, they can cut after year 1 or 2 without paying most of the contract monies. This makes these signings more palatable. In Gutey I trust.

If the Packers weren't paying Banks and Hobbs, how would you like them to spend that money? That was the going rate for players of their caliber in free agency. I suppose the Packers could've used that money for contract extensions with their own players, but they are not quite there yet with most of them. Zach Tom is the only one they really should offer an extension to anytime soon, and I'm pretty sure they have enough money to get that done.
murf7777
March 12, 2025 at 07:46 am
That’s for the GM to decide, my point is every dollar matters. If it is spent on one player it isn’t available to be spent on another. The best NFL mgmt plan monies spent for years to come and not just the current one. So, I’m not pretending to know what all that might entail.
Was it the going rate for these players? I’m not sure, but when considering the lack of guaranteed amount, as I stated, I think they are much more palatable than just looking at the total contract number, which may never be paid out.

If Morgan (Heavan forbid) can't take over the tackle spot, I hope he can improve the right guard spot and free up Rhyan (who played well) to be the center/guard 1st up. We need Morgan to live up to his 1st round billing and if he can't stay healthy or win at one of these spots, I'll be very disappointed.

It's NOT what you paid these guys, I read the same thing. It's what's GUARANTEED that is what's important. I'm 99% sure when the details of these contracts come out, the GUARANTEED money on both Banks and Hobbs deals will be in the first 2 years, with a fairly cheap option for the Packers to move on from either after 2 years.
Until we see what's guaranteed it doesn't really matter.

What I have read today is the only guaranteed money would be year one at 6 mil and the roster bonus of 6.25 mil. So that means 12.25 mil. The last two years have a larger salary so it appears he will be at most a 2 year Packer.

Agree Al...trading LT Walker would be folly unless an unexpected jaw dropper offer was made before the draft.
It may be Walker gets the Nijman treatment and competes with Morgan during camp...maybe plays musical chairs with him during the season. (I hope not...make the best 5 decision by game one!)
It may be another camp competition between Rhyan and Morgan. Morgan was looking like the eventual starter at RG until his shoulder shut him down.
If Morgan steps us his sophomore season like I expect either Walker or Rhyan will be swing at either T or G. I expect an OL draft choice by the 4th round or so too.
IOL Pressures should plugged, run blocking better, and OL depth greater in 2025.

You can call it "Lam" not trading your LT and a 3rd or 4th 2025 pick for a 30 year old with salary demands that will far exceed his current 2025 $16M salary.
Hendrickson's cost would more far than your starting LT & 3rd or 4th rd pick. He's demanding a new deal at crazy Crosby money.
Bengals want crazy too. They have stated Hendrickson can seek a trade...but it has to be a "crazy, crazy deal", according to a Bengals beat writer.
Packers just got out of crazy cap hell. I cannot see them jumping back into it with Hendrickson.

Sorry, but I can't agree with Al today, and I'm not sold on either of the signings just yet.
Banks 4 year stats don't match Runyan's, who Gutey let walk a year ago, and Hobbs is a "bargain version' of the oft-injured Alexander without the bargain price!
We've got a lot of holes to fill, the Mock boards have jumped from OL, to WR, to Edge, and back-n-forth, round-n-round a dozen times, and only One first round pick, so here we are at 'Draft and Develop' again. You ain't gonna' find an Edgerrin Cooper in the 3rd round every year, so where are we?
OL is probably out now that Banks is on board, so WR? Edge? DT after losing Slaton? A trade? Wait until final cuts and pick up the scraps, again?
I think a veteran WR is important, and it doesn't need be Tee Higgins or????, Just a veteran guy that's been around to show and get the kids all headed in the same direction. Jesus, Baltimore just signed Deandre Hopkins for $6m, Cooper Kupp is still available as I write this and, even MVS is out there, just a "been there, done that" guy that doesn't need to be All-Pro, knows it, and is content with the expectations! Call him an Experienced Decoy if you like!
I'm not touting anyone in particular, just an experienced Vet, and that leaves us in position to take 'BPA For Us', which IMO is Defense in the 1st round, and then start filling holes as it goes.

I have a small disagreement with Al. Yes we got Hobbs on a team friendly deal but from what I have read is that he is not a good tackler. He has missed a lot of tackles. He is mainly a slot CB. Yes he could learn the outside. In modern football it is very difficult to substitute different defensive packages unless the offense substitutes. Most offenses do not substitute unless there is a dire need. Also Hobbs has an injury history.
PeteK
March 12, 2025 at 09:01 am
He is a dilemma there as he has had seasons of 83, 74, and 72 tkls but also missed about 50 total, not counting an injury filled 2024. To me it's obvious that we will draft a CB in round one unless another position falls to us. I can only wish for a rejuvenated Alexander at least for another year.

"According to Next Gen Stats, the Packers allowed the fifth-fewest yards after a missed tackle" in 2025.
And this: PFF had the Packers 4th in fewest missed tackles in 2024 vs 15th in 2023.
Two reasons for this. Hafley demands a swarm to the ball while setting strong edges and forcing the ball inside. And he demands solid tackling.
This bodes well for Hobbs who has AVERAGED 70 tackles during his Raiders career. He will be coached up to improve tackling...and will have teammates swarming with him to minimize any miss while improves on it.

Gotta have tacklers. Gotta draft them! I’m convinced you can’t “fix” bad tackling at the NFL level due to CBA constraints as well as the level of competition.
LambeauPlain
March 12, 2025 at 12:20 pm
How do you explain the one year tackling turnaround under Hafley? Employees respect what you inspect and practice. You are correct about the CBA eroding practice time...especially live tackling. But it can be drilled and demanded better than it was before 2024.
TKWorldWide
March 12, 2025 at 05:47 pm
Good point; I’d have to see individual stats. My initial reaction was the addition (and subtraction) of personnel: Cooper, McKinney, Bullard, and Williams specifically replacing snaps from less proficient tacklers.
I do agree that coaching and points of emphasis matter, but I have a hard time thinking a poor tackler improves all the way to “great”, or at least MUCH better than before.
But I reserve the right to be egregiously mistaken!
Coldworld
March 12, 2025 at 10:18 am
Pff rates him as the 6th best run defender among corners in the 4 years he’s been in the league. He does have a high missed tackle percentage by their reckoning too. How does one resolve that seeming contradiction? Look at what he was asked to do as the “Star” corner in Vegas.
Hobbs is a far better tackler and more physical than any GB corner in the Gute era other than Nixon. If he plays outside, he will be a dramatic upgrade at least in that respect. Inside he is better in pass coverage than we’ve seen in the slot.
Sometimes one has to look a little deeper. This is one of those times.

You seem to be overlooking Jaire, who was a phenomenal tackler and very willing in run support.
Coldworld

No, I think Hobbs is more physical than pre-injury Jaire, which is not intended as a knock on Jaire, who is a much more accomplished corner and was originally more physical than of late.

Does the term "overpay" even mean anything when everybody is getting overpaid? It's the going rate. That's how a market economy works. NFL teams have a lot of money to spend on players, and they might as well spend all of it. That money doesn't do any good sitting in the bank.
murf7777
March 12, 2025 at 08:00 am
I’m certainly not a specialist on the SC., but my understanding is monies can be rolled over into the next year…. The packers will need a quite a bit of bucks to sign the following players next year. Quay Walker & Wyatt depending on what they do with 5th year options, Watson, Malik Willis, Rhyan, Doubs, Tom, Walker and there’s more. That’s a lot of very good players. Even if they rolled over all of the monies it might be difficult to sign all of these players as I think they all will be desirable in the FA market next year.
GregC
March 12, 2025 at 08:29 am
I don't know how much they can roll over into the next year. I think they made a judgment call that these new players are worth more than some of the current players on their roster whose contracts will expire soon. Tom is the obvious one to re-sign, but they may plan on replacing most of the others through the draft, or even free agency. Some of their replacements are probably on the roster already.

A team can roll over any unused cap from one season to the next. The only restriction is that teams must spend (per the CBA) 89% or more of their cap on a rolling 4 year average.
This off season the San Francisco 49ers ($50.01 million) had the highest salary cap rollover, followed by the Cleveland Browns ($41.95 million) and the New England Patriots ($34.86 million). We apparently rolled over $15.11 million

Great article as always, Al! Although DK was a great fit, I never thought Gute would shell out the steep asking price (both $$ and picks). The other two signings were unexciting but very much needed. If anyone watched our OL vs. Eagles, you knew something had to change and with Ja out the door, our CB room was in desperate need. Jenkins at C will be a significant upgrade from the perennial disappointment that was Josh Meyers. With WR and Pass Rush still a need and quality options all but off the board, what can the Packers do?
IMO, trade for Hendrickson.
Don't let his age over cloud your sensible judgement, this guy has gotten more productive YoY, his technique and work ethic are flawless and he's the type of leader any team would want. All of this sounds great but he's 31YO.....well....back in 1993 Ron Wolf signed a 31YO vet who still was highly productive, showed a strong work ethic and had leadership qualities that the young team needed... obviously that was Reggie White....who was at that time 31YO at the time. It changed the trajectory of the Packers that's still in orbit to this day......Having a disruptive pass rusher on this D is the one component needed for this unit to be elite.....

Part of me wants to bite my tongue given Hobbs & Banks deserve a fair shake to live up to generous contracts. IOL has oft been a mid-round treasure trove, so it behooves me to see this franchise having to allocate significant cap $pace to a position normally low on draft capital priority.
Gute's numerous draft warts, in this particular case, failing to acquire Creed Humphrey & Mitchell / DeJean, only magnify concurrent roster deficiencies with (perceived poor value) FA, dare I say, band-aids? Superior, game-altering skill comes at a steep cost at the established veteran level; despite the usual media fluff, it felt there was little chance of acquiring premier talent this go round.
There are far worse situations across the NFL, but you either accept or reject mediocrity; from President, to GM, to Coach, to player--each has played a fatal blow in our past decade of falling short, often with a thud. Gute is once again trying to make amends for past draft mistakes with the FA purse. I could care less if he's been with us 2 or 20 years, I've grown tired of the misses, to the point of apathy--many of them obvious to the common fan. THE DRAFT IS PARAMOUNT TO THIS SMALL MARKET FRANCHISE'S SUCCESS. Should he again fail top round heavy, I'll gladly bellow the proverbial slogan, "GOOD RIDDANCE!"
PeteK
March 12, 2025 at 09:19 am
Yes, first round could be misses, we'll find out this year. However, I'll be more positive and look at the good players we drafted later, Cooper, Bullard, and Evans, also in 2023 there were 7 players drafted that got significant playing time. It makes me happier to look at the WHOLE draft which compares favorably to other teams.

I took some comments and will add my thoughts to these.
"As for Banks, the Packers' lack of offensive line depth became painfully clear against the Eagles in the playoffs when we had to watch Travis Glover and Kadeem Telfort try to fill the shoes of Elgton Jenkins."
- I believe Gutey saw what happened in the Philly game and decided they needed to upgrade not only in players but also in versatility. The reported plan is to have Banks at LG, and move Jenkins to OC. Last year when Jenkins got hurt, they had no one to replace him. Morgan was on IR, Myers was a OC only and Monk seems to be OC only, and they had OT prospects trying to fill in at OG. It didn't work. Maybe they don't feel good about Monk, but if they view him as a center only, then if there is an injury to OG they could put Monk in at OC and move Jenkins to OG. They at least have some options.
"My opinion, but I feel strongly about this one. And no, I think it would be dumb to trade Walker, as I've seen many suggest. "
-I could see them trading Walker if they got a draft pick they wanted. A 2nd/3rd round pick. There are a lot of teams that need/want starting LT, and teams are willing to overpay for things. Walker is entering his final year. They have to pay Tom. They drafted Morgan to be the guy.
Now that being said. you can't have enough good OL. Walker has been a good one.
"Why Hobbs? Options. I could see them using either Bullard and Hobbs in the slot depending on the situation - Bullard on running downs, Hobbs on obvious passing downs. There have been reports that Hobbs will also play at outside corner"
-We will see how they plan to play him, but I trust Hafley and his vision. They have 3 players now that can play slot and another spot. Nixon, Hobbs and Bullard. Having that flexibility is huge if players get hurt, and depending on who they are playing they may need someone else to play those spots.
"Could this finally be the year the Packers select a wide receiver with their first pick? Imagine the delirium you would witness from the home-town Packers fans at the draft! Hey, a guy can dream...."
- I had this exact thought yesterday on my drive to work. They got a CB, and an OL so they have plugged some holes. This allows them to be more flexible in the draft. They do have a need at WR. And what they need a top tier WR. With the draft in GB, I think they are going to want to do something exciting. What position would be more exciting for the fanbase then WR.

"i I believe Gutey saw what happened in the Philly game and decided they needed to upgrade not only in players but also in versatility."
I don't think they upgraded their versatility so much in that they signed a G-only player to essentially replace a C-only player. Prior to that, I think that Jenkins was really the swing OT (with Morgan hurt)...his moving to C means he's probably locked in. I don't think they want to be juggling Cs. I don't think they upgraded their versatility, but they're paying 2 of their 5 starting OL significant money and they'll be upping Tom shortly. That means Walker is probably in his last season in GB and OL still will be an important part of this draft.
""I could see them trading Walker if they got a draft pick they wanted. A 2nd/3rd round pick"
I floated this here the other day, so I'm the dumbest one.
The only way they trade Walker is if they get to camp and find that...
1. Morgan is fully healthy
2. Morgan looks really good at OT
3. They have playable alternatives in the depth chart at OT without moving Jenkins
I don't have any idea what Walker would bring in trade, but I also have no idea what he'll bring in terms of a comp pick (which they would get in 2027) leaving by FA. And remember that if you sign outside FAs at any reasonable clip, you cancel out your comp picks.
"Why Hobbs? Options. I could see them using either Bullard and Hobbs in the slot depending on the situation"
I think they gained that kind of flexibility here...they suffered in the slot when Bullard missed time last year. They've got 3 (and maybe 4) capable slot defenders right now, and we haven't reached the draft yet. That said, you don't pay him this much to be a part time slot.
Hobbs profiles a lot like Keisean Nixon in terms of size, pedigree, and pros/cons. I think they're seeing a similar transition for Hobbs, only he's already got some NFL seasoning at CB while Nixon was pretty much a returner coming in. People are keying on his tackling, and a lot of that comes from his pre-draft assessment, but over the years he's been about average or a little higher for a CB. The Packers went from a mediocre-to-poor tackling team in 2023 to a top 10 tackling team in 2024. It can get better.
""Could this finally be the year the Packers select a wide receiver with their first pick? IThey got a CB, and an OL so they have plugged some holes. "
The needs at CB are diminished some, especially considering their use of S as their primary slot defender in 2024. They still need a developmental CB even if they hang onto JA for the upcoming season. If he goes, they probably need two. OL is not tremendously different--lose a starter, gain a starter--they still need depth there.
The WR market has been relatively tame--DA got his, but otherwise there's not a lot of big contracts. Actually, there just wasn't a lot of quality in the FA WR market. I still think they'll find a WR to sign, yet. Maybe an Elijah Moore--someone who can run and eat snaps if called upon, but it's clear that the difference-maker will have to come from internal development, shifting priorities (hello, Tucker Kraft!), or a fortunate draft selection. I think they'll keep an open mind to taking a WR at 23...or trading down. Still, I think the pick at 23 will be a DL--and hopefully it will be a disruptive DT.

it's distant history, but Mike Flanagan was a center who was first choice swing tackle. there is some precedent.

I don't think they want to rotate C's. But if one of the G's get hurt I could see them bringing in Monk to play C and moving Jenkins to G in a pinch. A lot of it depends on how the others develop as well. I feel like at the end of the year Monk was viewed as C only, and Myers was only a C.
"The only way they trade Walker is if they get to camp and find that..."
I don't think they will just hand the keys to Morgan. I think they want Morgan to beat out Walker. Which is why i don't see them trading Walker. But I won't say never and if a team offers them something good i could see them making the move.

I definitely expect them to draft a CB in the first 4 rounds. We have seen Gutey double up at positions before. CB could be the next one.
"I think they'll keep an open mind to taking a WR at 23...or trading down. Still, I think the pick at 23 will be a DL--and hopefully it will be a disruptive DT."
I would say odds are greater that it will be a DL, Edge or CB. But. That being said I think we maybe closer to drafting a WR in the first round then we have for however many years.

it's many years I am reading cheesehead. the problem here is you NEVER question packers management.
NEVER.
and this time it's happening again.
the expectations here were very high, one out of crosby, garrett, metcalf was coming to green bay.
now looking at the failure of mr gutekunst you simply adapt and create a new narrative.
but the reality is packers off-season is mediocre.
and it could not be different because mark murphy did not resign in january and ed policy has no power yet.
it could have been exicitng to see the first year of a new president, new energy, new ideas.
instead we still have a mediocre president that ruined all bob harlan work and now still want to be the chief till july ruining policy first season.
I would expect to read that here on cheesehead, to wake up this franchise.

Packers Management.....
I remember Packers Management when they were drafting Bruce Clark. And Rich Campbell. I remember them trading for John Hadl. I remember them not drafting Joe Montana.
So you'll have to excuse me if I think that the current Packers management does a pretty decent job. They're smarter than me. They spend more time thinking about this stuff than I do. The nonsense you spout about Murphy is just nonsense.

Last week an article (forget who the author was) evaluated FA spending since Gutey took over personnel.
The Packers have among the LOWEST $ invested in free agency...and near near the top of the entire NFL in ROI from their FA acquisitions.
You prefer the opposite?

I was reading an article (don't remember where) but it was about the correlation between spending on FA and winning. Guess which way it went? Moral of the story, the more you spent the less you won. TT was always boring on the 1st day of Free Agency, but he knew spending a bunch on other teams free agents didn't bring consistent winning. He was very consistent & disciplined, maybe to a fault on the discipline part, but I always appreciate that about a person. Too some extent Gutey follows this thought process.

on my fans group, the italian packers fans, I am writing the same things from at least feb 2015. we italian fans are not scared to criticize packers management, because everything start from the top. and our top mark murphy has been a disaster for the football team. may be he built houses, he let the community be richer but on the sport operations he has ruined all the work the great bob harlan did.
in green bay you are too scared to write mrk murphy was wrong or gutekunst missed on many decisions.
not everybody...zach kruse today wrote about gutekunst trying to recover from his bad 2021 draft overpaying 2 average replacements.

Whose "expectations"?? Some dummies here in the chat section?
None of those 3 players were free agents! Two of them re-signed with with the teams they were still under contract with. Their teams gave them MASSIVE extensions. So that is Gute's fault in your opinion?
The other one (DK) was traded and had to be given a new contract for elite WR money even though he is NOT elite, just good. So in your opinion Gute is a failure for not offering more draft picks than the Steelers (2nd rounder) and a $150 million contract. I guess you are entitled to your opinion no mater how stupid it may be.

Annual plug for the CHTV Draft Guide. Buy it, kids. It's always so well done and helps to give us this space to joust, piss, moan, laugh and cry all for FREE. Everyone has to be somewhere, so purchase the guide so we can continue to come here.
Let Trey find a different new home . Yes, it would be exciting to have a splash free agent, but in the end it will be like wetting your pants.

LOL! Also akin to a "premature evaluation" (channeling LH) for FA who would also demand a new K from any acquiring team that would be Mad Max money.

I get a chuckle from fans who think the Packers have an unlimited budget and can score any free agent the media/"experts" deem as the real deal. It's fairly clear to me that Gute/MLF think this team can compete against the best without drastic(and costly) moves in free agency. I want to wait until all the free agent moves are made to comment on that approach.
I wrote a similar thing to Al's commentary recently that the move for Banks was a prelude to 2026. They likely aren't going to be able to afford to pay market price for the tackles and Morgan would be the obvious choice to take one of the spots. They most certainly will pay Tom but Walker they might let walk like they're doing with Myers this year. I think you will also see them draft at least one more o-lineman this April.
Hobbs is also a serviceable replacement at corner, but it won't stop the Packers from drafting another cornerback. But the priorities in the draft now are on the d-line, both inside and outside.
The team might be holding off to drive down the price of a veteran receiver. I doubt they will hold tight on the current players with Watson out and Doubs a question with concussions.
As much as I criticized Ted Thompson for being a tightwad, he did dip into free agency when it helped the team. Woodson is a prime example. I think Gute takes a similar approach. When you spend outrageous dollars you need a return and as all players know, in the NFL you're one play away from retirement.

March 12, 2025 at 10:12 am
Good comment.
Gutey is more active than Ted in FA. And he's rang the bell several times: Preston, Z, Turner, Amos, J. Reed (too bad they couldn't keep him, but he wanted to return to Seattle), Campbell, Douglas, X, JJ...now Banks & Hobbs (so far).
This is a great year to get DL talent in the draft. Good at CB. Solid at OL. Decent for WR in early rounds.
Offseason is shaping up well with only 7 players who have left the 2024 roster. And even a few of those may be brought back.

March 12, 2025 at 01:02 pm
I hope we bring back Wilson......he played a bunch for us on defense and special teams. He's a vet.
I see a need to upgrade/replace Watson, and we might have a shot at a guy who could do that in the draft. If not, we're going to have to go through the season with a committee of #2s at WR, like we did in 2015. We'll probably need to add at least two.
And we still need one more Olineman that can play. Upgrade the receivers, improve the Oline. On defense, losing Slaton has created a big hole in the DT rotation and that'll have to be filled.

As far as getting any of the many pass rushers available, I believe that only Garrett was truly a game wrecker. The rest were 40 tkls, 8 sack players that received from 10 to almost 20 mill contracts. Is 4 more sacks worth the expenditure when we already have Enagbare with 5, and possibly developing players in Cox with 4 and Van Ness with 3.

So - a little more discord than usual. Often disagreements accompanies progress. Also progress is not necessarily linear. As long as the Packers are headed in the right direction - I am satisfied. We can quibble among ourselves - from afar- on how and what the Packers should do (which is just a bit of fun and nothing else). However, I trust that the Packers will continue to go forward - at their speed - until success will take care of itself.

I appreciate the discord T7S. On some things you wrote:
"levelheaded "- I do strive to be so but Gutekunst is practically synonymous to the word . Which is a quality, I believe, necessary for sound judgement and management.
"Success "- this is a large discussion - as it appears to differ for each person. However, for me - and as it pertains to the GBP - I consider them a very successful team and organization. Especially given their long history of good competitive teams. While it would be pleasing to have more Super Bowl Championships - I have reached the age and stage in my life when I can more appreciate of what I have - rather than what I don't have.
"Striving For Success" - My son once asked me what are humans purpose in life? My only reply was - for us to strive and endure. So I do believe that the Packers do strive for success. Except their approach and process is based on a variety of incremental gains - rather than flash moves and sudden shifts. That being so, I do believe that the Packers are very, very close to progressing into the top tier of SB contenders this year. Their competitive games with the Eagles this last season merely affirms my belief.

Banks is going to be expected to be a starting contributor for a long time I believe.. Packers are improving the OL with Banks.
Hobbs is an insurance piece to hold down the fort while they draft or otherwise acquire talent that will be eventually asked to take over Hobbs' role. Packers are bracing for a potential step back in the secondary with the assumed departure of Alexander and are trying to add stability with another veteran while they look for the future at CB.
Just my intuition, could be wrong.

March 12, 2025 at 08:34 pm
Banks and Hobbs are legit signings. They're young with much football ahead of them. Avoiding the migraine headache named DK Metcalf was a bonus. Too much drama with that guy, which is probably why they didn't even make an offer (meaning, they were never interested). Gute also won't draft a WR in RD1 because there is a strong possibility he already plans to trade out of RD1 (read MT5 on the team website). Plus, as one former GB writer likes to say about WRs, "Dime a dozen." Look for the Pack to draft one or two WRs.
A trade for Myles Garrett didn't make sense, either. Why pay $20M+/yr for a guy on the back end of his career (turns 30 this season)? The real question is why they didn't land Dayo Odeyingbo (EDGE, 6-6, 286lbs ) when the Bears were able to get him for only $16M/yr. He would have been a great fit, and he's only 25 years old. It's also too bad they couldn't poach CB Byron Murphy from the Vikings for slightly more than what they've already paid Jaire.
Jenkins will move to center now that Banks was signed and Myers has signed with the Jets. Morgan will have to overcome reoccurring injuries to complete for a starting OL position. He's had two season-ending injuries in the last three years (ACL and shoulder). Gute will draft a utility guy who can play anywhere on the OL (i.e. Jonah Monheim USC or Grey Zabel NDSU).
Letting Stokes and AJ Dillon walk was not a shock. Drafting two or three CBs in April is necessary. The writing was on the wall for Dillon when they resigned Emanuel Wilson, who played quite well last season. However, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if they draft a RB.

Well stated, Al!.....and a lot of long, but good comments by RC, Dobber, Golfpacker, et.al.
To support Al's comments about "overpaying," consider what the Bears and Vikings just did. The Bears tried to get ahead of what they knew was going to be good market for o-linemen by giving up a 2025 6th round pick and a 2026 4th round pick for 32 year old Thuney and 28 year old Jones while still paying them their salaries and bonuses of $16 & $17.5 million respectively and BOTH WITH 1 YEAR LEFT ON CONTRACTS (Jones has an additional option year at $17 million). Then they signed Dalman to a reported $14 million per year deal with $28 million guaranteed. The Vikings sign Will Fries for 5 year $88 million, and soon to be 32 year old Ryan Kelly to a 2 year $18 million deal. Kudos to our opponents, but Gute and the Packers are not a mess as some would say, as they did not have to go through the extremes our rivals did just to put o-lines together. I also believe we may have been in a battle with other teams (maybe the Vikes) to acquire Banks, WHO was playing in a similar system to what MLF runs. NICE JOB, GUTE!
Al and RC stated my opinion. Gute just stabilized the needs at O-line with 6 starting bodies. The same with CB, you now have 3 guys who have started at slot, and 3/4 who have started at outside corner pending Alexander. What this provides Gute is OPTIONS to sign depth pieces and the OPTION to reach or draft a player not expected to fall to us in the draft without being beholden to a position of need (though I am still in the camp of a Dlineman #1 and WR #2,, especially now). Time will tell on the upsides to these guys, but WELCOME and let's give them a chance!
As a side-note, congrats to my son who identified Hobbs as a potential Packer-type CB....#3 on his list.

I didnt expect much out of Gutt and he never lets me down. I'm of the mindset, this team needs a lot.
Way too many first round picks that arent panning out that have dragged this team down and its not just injuries. These guys werent that good when not injured: stokes, alexander, wyatt, walker, gary.
The people who were on the board that Gutt passed on for these guys could have put us in a SB or at least been a pain in the ass in the playoff run for others.
We just keep hanging on to these guys because they were Gutts prime picks. All I know is there are some really fast linebackers and corners in the first round and if we pass for some receiver its another miss year. The best teams are getting those top defenders in round one and everything else later.
The Steelers coach always draft top defenders in round one and thats why he has a winning season every year, the O aint great but the d keeps them in close games and they win enough to have a winning season.
