5 Things to Watch in Packers at Eagles: Can Green Bay Generate Explosives Without Watson?

The Packers will need to lean on the likes of Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks to create big plays against the Eagles.

Can Green Bay generate explosives without Watson?

The availability of Christian Watson has been a huge factor in Green Bay’s ability to generate explosive plays this season.

With Watson on the field in 2024, the Packers receivers rank first in the NFL for explosive plays per route. Without him, they fall to 19th.

Whether it is Watson causing the damage, or his presence drawing attention and opening up opportunities elsewhere, he has been a force multiplier for Green Bay. After an ACL injury was confirmed, along with other knee ligament damage, he will not suit up for a while.

Philadelphia’s defense, coordinated by veteran coach Vic Fangio, excels at keeping everything in front of them, and is therefore very stingy in the explosive plays department. Fangio’s unit allowed the fewest net yards gained per pass attempt in the NFL in 2024.

All of that adds up to a potentially difficult task for the Packers to pick up big chunks of yardage on Sunday afternoon. So, how can they find a way?

Getting back to leaning heavily on Josh Jacobs could provide an avenue for success, after lightening the load on him of late. If there is an area in which the Eagles defense is not truly outstanding, they ‘only’ rank 11th in yards per carry allowed.

For all the success the Eagles have had defensively, they also only rank 28th in pressure percentage.

The Packers have a strong pass protecting offensive line, so Love has a good chance of being able to get comfortable in the pocket and look downfield, while his pass catchers should have time to run longer developing, deeper routes.

But with Watson out, the question still remains; who will step up for Green Bay? Jayden Reed exploded for 138 yards in the first matchup with Philadelphia, but he has been quiet of late and fumbled in the season finale versus Chicago.

It might be time to fully trust in Dontayvion Wicks, and give the receiver a big helping of targets. Wicks is the best route runner on the team, has been catching the ball much more cleanly of late, and could be Green Bay’s best answer to their issues getting open against man coverage specifically.

Without Watson, the Packers are going to have to get creative to avoid becoming predictable on offense.

Is Jalen Hurts rusty?

When Sunday’s game kicks off, Hurts will have thrown just four passes – and only one completion – in live action in the previous 28 days, thanks to a concussion suffered against the Commanders in week 16.

Although his team ultimately prevailed, Hurts did not have his best game against the Packers way back in week one. He threw two touchdowns and two interceptions in Brazil in a performance which provided his worst passer rating of the season in a game he has finished.

The Eagles quarterback has only thrown three interceptions since that game, but perhaps the Packers have his number.

They will need to keep him in the pocket – like they did in week one – and make him win as a passer, although a smidge more pressure, while not compromising the integrity of rush lanes, would be welcome this time around.

Hurts has not been tasked with moving the offense quite as much this year, with the addition of Saquon Barkley at running back shouldering most of that responsibility, but he is far from a perfect quarterback. Making the Eagles throw to win could be a recipe for success on defense.

Saquon Barkley

The NFL’s rushing champion, and one of just nine players in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, Barkley will be the focus of everyone’s attention on defense at all times this Sunday.

When the Packers saw Barkley back in week one, the league did not yet know what was about to hit them, but the star running back made a statement in his Eagles debut, registering three total touchdowns in Brazil.

It goes without saying that Barkley is going to be productive, but Green Bay must stop him from taking over the game. Fortunately, the run defense has been a strength for the Packers this season.

Having T.J. Slaton available, who is questionable with an ankle injury but told reporters earlier this week that he would play on Sunday, would be a huge boost for the Packers. Slaton is their only true big body on the defensive line.

While Barkley stole the headlines back in week one with his three scores, the 4.5 yards per carry he accumulated in that game is actually his fourth-worst mark of the season. Of course, he is also a threat to do damage out of the backfield, as the Packers found out.

Containing Barkley to any significant degree has to be the top priority for the Packers defense in Sunday’s game.

Defenders reinforcements arriving?

The Packers have a chance of getting two key defenders back for their postseason run, with Quay Walker and Evan Williams both having a chance to return this week. Walker has been out with an ankle injury, while Williams has dealt with a quad issue.

Before picking up the injury, Walker appeared to have turned a corner, producing some solid displays. In his absence, his fellow linebacker Edgerrin Cooper has become a true difference maker, seeing his snap count rise to the point he is now essentially playing every snap on defense.

Getting Walker back out on the field to pair with Cooper could help solidify the linebacker position at a key time. Eric Wilson and Isaiah McDuffie have filled in admirably, but both have deficiencies in coverage especially.

The return of Williams would give Green Bay more flexibility and depth on the back end, as well as freeing up Xavier McKinney to go and make plays rather than babysit his safety partner.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has had to shuffle the defensive backfield too often as of late, mostly due to injuries. Having a trustworthy player like Williams back at his disposal would clear up the picture considerably.

Can the Packers corners hold up against Brown and Smith?

The Eagles have two excellent wide receivers at their disposal in A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, and although both players popped up on the injury report this week, they do not have designations ahead of Sunday’s game, meaning they will play.

Brown killed the Packers in the previous matchup, racking up 119 yards receiving and a long touchdown, and Green Bay had their top corner Jaire Alexander in that game, who will not be available this time around.

There has been a positive change in Green Bay’s cornerback group since then though, as Carrington Valentine has seen his share of snaps increase as the year has gone on, and the second-year man has taken advantage of his opportunity.

Valentine played just 12% of snaps in the season opener, but has not left the field in each of the last two games. In the regular season, he ranked 14th out of 116 qualified corners in coverage grade according to PFF.

Keisean Nixon has also improved throughout the year and has somewhat surprisingly adapted very well to being moved from the slot to outside corner. Even Eric Stokes has stepped up in the second half of the season, playing solid ball.

There is no doubt Hafley has done his best to hide his corners at times, but they also deserve credit for the way they have played. If Williams returns at safety, the configuration of Valentine and Nixon outside, with Javon Bullard in the slot, may be the preferred combination.

Facing Brown and Smith will be one of the toughest assignments Green Bay’s corners have faced this year, but there is some evidence they can pass the test.

"Fortunately, the run defense has been a strength for the Packers this season." It seems like years since I've read this about the Packers, but they have been stout against the run the 2nd half of the season. Gary hasn't gotten the sacks, but he's become an excellent run stopper.

Here's another key to the game after I heard this nugget from the guru himself, Greg Cosell:

The Eagles defense has played the least amount of snaps in the NFL....and they do not substitute very much at all. On one hand, they fly to the ball, because they're usually fresh. On the other hand, what it means for the Packers is that they must sustain drives. That means more than just keeping the ball out of Barkley and Hurts' hands, but keep the Eagles defense on the field and just wear them down with Jacobs and the WRs.

Yep I said earlier this week their 2nd team Dline isn't nearly as good as in years past, especially with Brandon Graham being lost for the season. LaFleur has to keep on calling run plays even if they aren't that effective because if they get a Vernon Davis off the field the backups are between 44 and 50 lbs lighter.

Good call that it might be time to trust Dontayvion Wicks. The first half of the season was a nightmare for him, but lately he's been catching the ball. It can't be all on him of course, but he could be that X factor. Yes, I'm afraid that's what it's come down to. Reed, Doubs, and Kraft probably can't carry the passing game all by themselves. Maybe Malik Heath could provide an assist too. He seems like kind of a clutch player.

how can a guy with less than 100 yards receiving on the season be a clutch player?

I said "seems like." He made a very difficult contested catch to give the Packers a late lead against the Giants last year and caught another nice TD a few weeks ago. I was also impressed by him high-pointing a ball for a great catch against the Bears last week. If he's called on, the moment does not seem too big for him.

The problem is he’s not going to stretch the field. He’s a possession WR. He’s the guy I see as the WR next to Musgrave in the spectrum of TE to WR on this team (definitely on the WR side.

If we want to stretch their D deep then I’d want some route trees with Melton and Reed. Neither are big but both run 4.3s. I would personally have Melton outside and Reed take the middle. Fangio’s D isn’t typically easy to get behind. Absent Watson that’s what we’d have to do. I don’t think a single deep threat will stretch their back end enough to get favorable match ups.

The primary goal is to keep them deep and allow us to thrive in front of them and to stop them loading the box if we pound Jacobs and Wilson all day, as I hope.

if heath and Melton were good enough, they would be playing. Melton is speedy so maybe there is hope for him but heath is just a body. all receivers make catches. that does not make them anything special. the fact is we have no difference makers at the position.

Let's hope that JLove takes advantage of the middle of the field and doesn't force it deep into this defense's strength.

Kraft and, against this D, Musgrave, could thrive in front of their safeties. Use them to draw focus and try to slip Reed or Melton behind them.

I agree about Wicks, he is our best route runner, best since adams. Maybe, this will be the game they bring out Musgrave to stretch the seam. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve been holding back some plays for him.

Wicks has never been a good route runner here or in college technically. He’s naturally gifted at getting separation, but he does not run precise or consistent routes. That’s one of his issues. Technically, the only one who does is Doubs.

Agree.

Wicks has good quickness and separation moves at the snap, but I never heard him mentioned as the best route runner on the Packers.

Doubs is indeed that guy. His route running is why Love looks to him as his "go to". Doubs will be exactly where the play was drawn up in the playbook.

where is that quickness and separation after the catch? he doesn't make guys miss or break tackles. let's face it. if he gets 40 yards today it will be a big day for him. hopefully today is the day he breaks out

That’s probably true, my thoughts were getting separation and I put that into actual route running…my bad.

Adams has both now...incredible quickness at the snap to get separation and follows that up with great routes. The best Packer I watched running routes was Greg Jennings.

Also...Adams was not viewed as the #1 WR until he had stopped the drops and perfected his routes. We may yet be calling one of the young men in the current WR room #1 in the near term.

Yes, Heath has to be a bigger part of the Game Plan. He catches all his targets--move the chains.

how do you like your clutch heath now? jumps in the air for an easy catch and critical first down and lands out of bounds while wide open. the final nail in the coffin from your clutch guy.

More two-back sets with Love under center. Counters and wheel routes to move their D-line back and forth.
Set the line and run the play, don't read a novel, burning clock, letting the defense tee off the snap. Love works best
in hurry up mode.

Time of Possession game!

The team that does the best Job keeping the other team's Offense on the sideline will probably prevail. If the game's box score displays the Packers owning the TOP and yards gained, it will very likely show them with the winning points line too.

Big lift. It can be done. Pound them on the ground!

Explosive plays are nice, theyre MLF's fav play, chuck it deep down field hope for a catch or a pi call...but what's wrong with just moving the sticks down the field eating up clock....as long as it results in points...grind it out today...use the middle of the field and the TE's more..

Great article! It's a blow to lose the unique combination of size and speed that Watson brings and his absence will be felt. But we have to adjust and we have a couple of options that need to be more involved in the game plan. It's imperative that MLF start designing more plays that focus on Kraft. He's also a unique talent who has proven to be a more than reliable asset. Kraft is a playmaking, YAC machine TE and MLF needs to let him cook. He can't keep this guy on ice any longer, just look at how the Chiefs, Ravens, 9ers and even the Raiders have made the TE a star position.....we have an emerging star in Kraft and it's time MLF starting using him that way. We also have, when available, Musgrave who has shown that he can stretch the field and create mismatches. He's healthy now and needs to be on the field more now that Watson is gone. We have a couple of legit race cars in our top TEs, now is the time to rev up their engines and let them fly....

Ha, yeah.....call me crazy for expecting more game planning for our TEs in this game.....and a wasted year for Musgrave who was in on only 15 snaps against Philly....MLF has to do better with this group as they are versatile talents.....
