What Will the Packers' Snap Count Plan Be Against Chicago?
Matt LaFleur announced that all healthy starters will play in the regular season finale against the Chicago Bears. How much playing time will they actually get?
Entering Week 18, the Green Bay Packers have a possibility of two seeds, with three potential first-round opponents.
The Packers can clinch the sixth seed with a win and a Commanders loss. If Green Bay secures the sixth seed, they’ll face either the Los Angeles Rams or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who could still swap the third and fourth seeds. However, a Commanders win will lock the Packers into the seventh seed and a trip to Philadelphia.
Earlier this week, there was discussion on social media about whether the Packers should rest some starters for their Week 18 game against the Chicago Bears. Green Bay is currently the seventh seed and can climb as high as the sixth but no higher. Ensuring the team is as healthy as possible for the playoffs may outweigh the benefits of playing key starters in a inconsequential game.
On Wednesday, Matt LaFleur told the media that all healthy starters will play in the regular-season finale. LaFleur acknowledged the potential backlash regardless of his choice.
"The right answer is whatever works," he said. "You gotta have a philosophy and do what works best for you."
The last time the Packers rested starters in Week 18 was during the final game of the 2021 season in Detroit. Starters played only the first half, and Green Bay lost that game. Two weeks later, they were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.
“We were in a similar situation a few years back, where we played the guys a half and lost in the second half,” LaFleur recalled. “Then we had the bye and lost in the playoffs. So, like, the right answer is whatever works, it’s really what I’ll tell you. I know you’re subject to criticism. If it goes great, then that was the right way to do it. If it doesn’t go the way you wanted to, then you learn from every experience.”
Playing the starters this week is the right move. If the Packers climb to the sixth seed, there’s still a slim chance of hosting a playoff game this year, however unlikely. Just having that possibility is valuable. Additionally, it’s crucial for the team to build momentum after a tough road loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The key question is how LaFleur and the coaching staff will manage the snap counts between starters and backups.
By the time this article is published, Green Bay may have ruled out most starters dealing with injuries. Christian Watson, Quay Walker, Evan Williams, Elgton Jenkins, Brenton Cox Jr, Zayne Anderson, and Andre Dillard did not participate in Wednesday’s jog-through. On Thursday, Watson warmed up inside with the team for the first time since his knee injury against the New Orleans Saints but did not join practice outside. Meanwhile, Williams, Walker, Cox, and Anderson were in the rehab area. Dillard was absent.
The Packers aren’t focused on scoreboard-watching on Sunday. Their priority is taking care of their own business and letting the results unfold as they will. That said, it’s possible they could receive updates on the Commanders’ game. If Washington appears to be on track for an easy win, Green Bay might opt to rest their starters and give the backups a chance to play.
This approach is quite common in Brazilian soccer, where all final matchday games are played at the same time. Teams often keep tabs on other results, and if their goals become unattainable, they tend to ease up. While American sports operate differently, it’s an interesting comparison to consider.
We could see plenty of Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson on Sunday. Josh Jacobs has logged at least 18 touches in five of the last seven games, and the Packers need to keep him as fresh as possible for the playoffs. While Jacobs is the elite back, Brooks and Wilson have proven they can keep Green Bay's rushing attack effective.
Elgton Jenkins has been managing a knee injury recently. While he hasn’t missed a game this season, it’s reasonable to wonder if Green Bay will give their veteran the week off to heal for the postseason stretch. Jenkins is the highest-graded offensive guard in pass-blocking this year and a player the offense cannot afford to lose.
Ty'Ron Hopper has played the least snaps of the linebacker room, with just 18 defensive snaps this season. Edgerrin Cooper is the next closest, having played 432 snaps.. Quay Walker is dealing with an ankle injury, which could open the door for Hopper to take on a rotational role. Fortunately, Cooper is playing like one of the best linebackers in the league, which could help ease some of the pressure on Hopper.
The Packers technically have something to play for, but there’s a good chance Matt LaFleur will choose to share the load of snaps among his players. The primary goal on Sunday is to get out of the game as healthy as possible, and they’ll handle everything else regarding playoff seeding as it comes. Playing the starters is the right choice, but ensuring a fair share of snaps between the starters and backups is also the smart move.

Before we do anything here, we need to discuss the photo accompanying this thought piece. I'm not going to attempt a caption, but I'll say it appears to be either an ad for an otolaryngology practice advocating for awareness of adult mouth-breathing and the link to sleep apnea, or a couple of middle school gym teachers at a break during the LEA conference.

Good points. Matt is right, if it works...people will be happy with it. If it doesn't, he'll get criticized. Make a decision that you're paid to make. I'm fine either way. Advantages and disadvantages for each. Injury risks are there for playing your preferred starters. But if you're still trying to perfect underperforming areas, there is risk if you not put your best guys out there and use the game for yet another opportunity to get better.

Agreed. This game needs to be about focus on fundamentals, execution, and assignment surety. The score will take care of itself, if GB handles it's business.

Only one barber in Green Bay?

Let's go Pack!
*I always wanted to buy a used Bear sleeping bag while attending a tilt at Lambeau vs da Bares. I would act like I'm pulling for da Bears and then towards the end of the game, unzip the Bear sleeping bag and show my shirt which proclaims, "THE BEARs STILL SUCK"

**I gotta give Coach Hafley and Coach LaF some kudos. Their pecs seem defined and rather youthful and spry. At my age, my pecs resemble mud-flaps on the old International farm truck parked outside year round.
***Or, they both are in the Green Bay Prebble community theater and the play is Vision Quest. They are in the 112 lb division and are trying to tell the other one to go out there and wrestle Shute (Dan Campbell)

The Polish and Finnish are a lot alike, they both make furniture shine.
How many Finns does it take to change a light bulb?
Five, one to hold the bulb and four to drink enough vodka to get the room spinning.

LaFleur quoted Belichick in the local newspaper today, essentially saying that it is bad for team morale to sit a select (uninjured) few and then tell the rest of the players that they really aren't as important and they have to play (and, oh buy the way, we expect you to play hard and win.....). Lousy message for team unity and chemistry which Belichick believed was worse than any risk associated with playing everyone.
LaFleur indicated he wants to play everyone who is healthy and win the game although some may be on a pitch count if they are banged up and nursing minor injuries.

Leave the starters on the field until everybody is convinced we're ready for the playoffs. If it's 13-10 in the third quarter, we're not ready.

If it’s 13:10 in the third quarter with our starters in then we’ve got bigger questions.

No. Not at all. We could move up from 7 to 6 in the seeding and open against LA instead of Philly. In either case, I'd rather come in from a win. I don't mind resting Jacobs.
We're playing the Bears Sunday. Beating them is a good thing. Nothing Else Matters.

I look at it differently. I don’t want to play any starter not fully healthy. Beyond that I see the proper imperative as being to play the depth that have not seen snaps and are not experienced that we are most likely to have to call on in game the playoffs.
For me that’s Rochell at CB, OL in whatever order we’d insert, but definitely one T and one G. There may be others on the PS, such as Brown.
Beyond that it’s getting players like McKinney, Kraft, Tom, Jenkins and Jacobs out early enough to give their back ups—maybe a PS RB are elevated this week— A real run out as much as avoiding an injury that would dramatically weaken us. Guys like Hopper and Oladapo need reps badly as we may have to have them filling in during the games ahead.
For the most part that can be done by simply shifting snaps at TE, LB, S and RB. The trickiest one might be Clark, but Wooden and perhaps some experimentation is called for. This is an opportunity to make the overall roster better and test out combinations and ideas. Use that proactively please.

Most players this late in the season are carrying dings, bruises, wrenched muscles, soreness etc.
You cannot play no-one, so its not so much about who is fully healthy (almost no-one), but about the severity of how beaten up they are.
A sliding scale of injury, in effect, where La Fleur (and the medical team) have to weigh up the importance of each player with the level of injury, the need to avoid rustiness, and the type of injury, to make a determination of each player's snap count.

Of course “fully healthy” is a relative and somewhat nebulous term. My intent was to suggest avoiding playing guys who would be questionable in normal circumstances or with something that the week off could realistically benefit physically. Cox and Watson are the obvious ones but there may be a few others that are carrying something.
My real point was that the driver should be identifying players we may need to call on who have not had meaningful snaps and ensuring we find a way to get them some in a game situation case they have to step up in the playoffs.

Yes, good point. Not just refine technique for the preferred starters, but you're suggesting that the next in line who may be needed in the playoffs also need valuable reps. I agree.

I don't think there will be any scoreboard watching. NFL teams don't like to do that. In fact, I remember going to a Packer game at the end of a season in which the score of the other relevant game was not posted on the stadium scoreboard, at the request of the team. We had to find out about it from people who had radios. (This was the pre-cell phone era.)
They should play all of the starters. Don't do the half-ass thing. They can start subbing if they get a big lead in the second half. And you definitely don't want to sub for any offensive linemen if your starting QB is still playing.
