Packers Game 9 Recap l Lions 24 Packers 14

The Green Bay Packers fall to the Detroit Lions 24-14.

It was a rainy day at Lambeau Field as the Packers mistakes poured against their division rival resulting in a frustrating loss for Green Bay. QB Jordan Love threw another costly pick increasing his league leading interceptions to 10 for the season. Although RB Josh Jacobs had a big first half, Green Bay neglected the run once they fell behind as he finished with 95 YD on 13 CAR. WR Jayden Reed had a big game with 5 REC and 113 YD and the defense with CB Jaire Alexander still sidelined with an injury caused a rare 0 turnovers. In case you missed it, here is the recap:

Packers received first starting at their own 25 with RB Jacobs getting back-to-back carries of 9 and 13-yard gains. On third-and-3, QB Love hit Jacobs on a short pass as the measuring chains were brought out confirming fourth-and-inches. GB went for it with C Elgton Jenkins leading the helm on a TE Tucker Kraft direct snap pushing for the first down (starting C Josh Myers did not play because of a lingering wrist injury). After a 19-yard completion from QB Love to WR Christian Watson, GB found themselves at the DET 28 with a chance to put points out the board first in the sloppy weather conditions. On third-and-6 at the DET 12, QB Love threw behind RB Ahmad Brooks as the ball went off his fingertips for the incompletion leading to a successful 30-yard field goal attempt by K Brandon McManus. The score was GB 3 DET 0 with 7:06 left in the first quarter after the 14 play drive.

DET started their first drive with an 8-yard run by RB David Montgomery. RB Montgomery picked up an 11-yard first down run into GB territory. After a 19-yard pass from QB Jared Goff to TE Sam LaPorta, the GB defense continued to look vulnerable stopping the run as a 5-yard first down run by RB Montgomery set up first-and-goal at the GB 8. The final play of the first quarter was LB Edgerrin Cooper stopping RB Montgomery on third-and-goal (the quarter flew by lasting only 25 minutes). GB 3 DET 0.

Second Quarter: Packers 3 Lions 0

DET was able to get the Packers defense to jump offsides setting up 4th-and-Goal at the GB 3. QB Goff had enough time in the pocket for WR Amon-Ra St. Brown to run his route connecting for the touchdown. K Jake Bates made the extra point giving them the lead DET 7 GB 3 with 14:56 remaining in the second quarter.

With the weather conditions getting worst, GB first play was a 37-yard run by RB Jacobs hustling his way to the DET 39. GB had another mental mistake as a false start pushed them back setting up third-and-8. QB Love was pressured by the DET breakout blitz and threw away the ball setting up a P Daniel Whelan punt to the DET 9. QB Goff threw his fifth completion in a row on a short pass to RB Jahmyr Gibbs for an 11-yard gain. On third-and-4, the GB defense swarmed QB Goff as DE Arron Mosby and DT Rashan Gary split the sack for an 8-yard loss forcing DET to punt.

With the GB possession starting at their own 18, QB Love was able to move the chains after short completions to TE Kraft and RB Jacobs. The Packers offense continued to gain momentum with RB Jacobs hitting over 100 yards of total offense halfway through the second quarter. GB had 7 penalties compared to DET 0, but an unnecessary roughness helmet-to-helmet hit by S Brian Branch on WR Bo Milton led to a 15-yard penalty and automatic first down. After New York reviewed the play looking further into the illegal hit, S Branch was ejected from the game and tacked on another 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Packers failed to capitalize on the penalties on as TE Kraft dropped a perfectly thrown pass leading to a missed 46-yard field goal attempt by K McManus. GB consistent self inflicting mistakes continued to plague them.

On the first play of DET second drive, QB Goff found a wide open WR St. Brown in the middle of the field for a 26-yard gain. QB Goff completed his 11th pass in a row to WR Tim Patrick setting up second-and-1 at the GB 18 as the clock ticked down to the two minute warning. Another positive gain by RB Montgomery set up first-and-goal at the GB 10. On third-and-goal, the Packers defense blitzed QB Goff who had to quickly throw the ball away for incompletion. The 27-yard field goal attempt by K Bates was good increasing the Lions lead to DET 10 GB 3 with 58 seconds left in the second quarter.

Looking to put points on the board before the end of the half, the GB offense came out with a sense of urgency. After a 9-yard completion to WR Romeo Doubs, the Packers hurry up offense came to a screeching stop with a soft throw by QB Love that was intercepted by LB Kerby Joseph for the pick 6. K Bates made the extra point bringing the score to DET 17 GB 3 with 32 seconds left. The last play of the miserable first half was a 41-yard pass completion to WR Jayden Reed as time expired with GB having no timeouts. Halftime DET 17 GB 3.

Third Quarter: Lions 17 Packers 3

The Lions received the ball to start the second half as QB Goff completed a quick pass and dash run by WR St. Brown for a 10-yard gain. On third-and-6, an incomplete pass by QB Goff was salvaged by another painful Packers penalty with a defensive holding by CB Keisean Nixon giving DET the first down. A deflating penalty it was as the Lions responded with an 18-yard run by RB Gibbs to the GB 24. After QB Goff threw only his second incompletion setting up fourth-and-1, DET decided to go for it as RB Gibbs went untouched into the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown (is Quay Walker even out there?). K Bates made the extra point as the lopsided lead was now DET 24 GB 3 with 9:32 left in the third quarter.

After back-to-back runs setting up third-and-3, QB Love threw a slant pass which was dropped by WR Dontayvion Wicks for the Packers fifth drop of the game. A lousy three and out by the GB offense was not an ideal response as P Whelan punted the ball giving DET possession at their own 6-yard line. The GB defense was able to contain the Lions run game setting third-and-6. A 5-yard completion to WR St. Brown was stopped short leading to a three and out punt by DET giving the Packers possession at the GB 25 with 5:25 left in the third quarter.

Needing to put points in the board now, QB Love found WR Reed for a 32-yard completion. On third-and-1 at the DET 30, QB Love was pressured out of the pocket and completed a 3-yard tippy-toe grab by WR Reed. Lions HC Dan Campbell challenged the play, but it was upheld as DET lost a timeout. The rain started to pour and caused problems for the Packers offense as two mishandled snaps pushed the offense backwards setting up a successful 38-yard field goal attempt by K McManus. The score was now DET 24 GB 6 with 48 seconds left in the third quarter. The final play of the quarter was a RB Montgomery run on first down that was tackled for a 1-yard loss. DET 24 GB 6.

Fourth Quarter: Lions 24 Packers 6

On third-and-10 at the DET 39, QB Goff threw his third incompletion of the game as he and TE LaPorta were not on the same page forcing the Lions to punt to the GB 17-yard line. GB found themselves on 4th-and-5 as QB Love threw a laser back shoulder pass with a miraculous catch by WR Reed for 28 yards. QB Love completed a 19-yard pass to WR Melton to the DET 18. On third-and-1, WR Wicks had another drop this time in the end zone setting up fourth-and-1. RB Jacobs was stopped short of the first down marker for a turnover on downs with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter.

DET tried to get cute with a double wide receiver reverse which was stopped in its tracks by DE Kingsley Enagbare for a 12-yard loss. GB was able to force another three-and-out as DET punted to the GB 45. After a 27-yard gain by RB Wilson on third down, QB Love tried pushing the pace into DET territory. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by the Lions gave GB the first down at the DET 11. QB Love completed a 9-yard pass to TE Kraft setting up a 2-yard touchdown run by RB Wilson. QB Love completed a two point conversion pass to WR Watson bringing the score to DET 24 GB 14 with 3:49 left in the fourth quarter.

The GB onside kick attempt rolled out of bounds giving DET the ball on their own 47. On third-and-1, RB Montgomery picked up the first down putting a dagger into the hopes of any Packers comeback. QB Goff took multiple victory formation kneel downs as the final score was DET 24 GB 14.

The Packers are now 6-3 while being 0-2 in the division heading into their bye week.

I remember when the Packers would never have lost this type game, in the rain, at Lambeau...MLF should be ashamed...happened more than once now...

MLF should be ashamed? You’re showing recency bias. Losing games at Lambeau goes back to at least 2003 against Atlanta in the playoffs.

Man the outdoors used to be our thing. We will never bear good teams until we clean up the drops, penalties, and turnovers. Detroit was the far more disciplined team. 2nd time this year we have been embarrassed at home in a division game.

Also embarrassing to only win games with last minute FG's. It's the same as any other win but as for the determination of a team, it sucks.

Can't win games with a weak defense and 3 point FG's on offense.
