Joseph's Gems: Reassessing Ty'Ron Hopper II

A little elbow grease and this Gem could really shine.

We've turned the page on the 2024 NFL Preseason, and the next time we see the Packers take the field, it'll really count. We had plenty of interesting storylines to follow, with the kicking and backup quarterback competitions taking the spotlight. But at a not-so-distant third, the rotation of linebackers certainly deserved some notice. Throughout the three week period, questions abound about when we would see 2nd Rounder Edgerrin Cooper, as well as just how good the 3rd Round Pick and 2024 Gems Selection Ty'Ron Hopper really was.

Let me remind you, this is uncharted territory folks, this is the first time GM Brian Gutekunst has selected a Gem (and hopefully not the last, I gotta job to keep too). And now that he has, did the Packers "get it right"?

If you need to refresh your memory, you can read about my endorsement of Hopper in Part V of Joseph's Gems 2024.

For part one of Reassessing, you can find that here.

Analysis

I'm still making my notes, but in the two weeks of seeing Hopper in action, I was pleased to see him "pop" off the tape. Even when I was watching another player, Ty'Ron would find his way onto the screen, and into my gaze. For a 4-3 LB, that's exactly what I want to see. If you ask me, it seemed like it was an open competition between Hopper and fellow linebacker Ralen Goforth on who could get the most action in the fray.

I need a larger sample size, and apparently Haf does too, as he has yet to win the starting job and is currently #2 behind Isaiah McDuffie. Let's not hit the panic button yet though. McDuffie is the veteran and he was also coached by Haf at Boston College so there's probably a trust factor there that Hopper is going to have to earn before he gets out there. For what it's worth, Cooper is also #2 behind Eric Wilson. It will be interesting to see who starts to chip away at the two starters' snap counts first.

From a purely statistical perspective, Hopper is only credited with missing two tackles all preseason through his 89 snaps. Whether it's Haf or Hopper just getting better on his own, or both. I said it back then, and I'll say it again, the missed tackles are not the problem some of you might think it is. During a typical game, an NFL offense will run on average 47-54 snaps. So if Ty'Ron is only missing 1 tackle a game, I can certainly live with that. Once he's out with the starters I imagine he'll go for multiple-game streaks without missing any at all.

What I really wanted to see, but didn't see from Hopper is his ability to rush the passer. Per PFF, Hopper had only two pass rush snaps, despite being on the strong side of the defense. I'm not necessarily "bummed" about it, but I just wanted to see how he handles NFL offensive tackles on the edge. His primary usage was against the pass, which did leave something to be desired, but I'm going to temper that evaluation because it's the preseason, and teams tend to draw up some real vanilla stuff. I won't get too concerned until mid-season.

Expectations

Hard to really say if he's held up in just the preseason, but Hopper registered 11 tackles with 6 stops - a new stat by PFF that constitutes a failure by the offense. While he had an overall grade by those experts at 50.4, I'm going to throw an asterisk at that since NOBODY looked good playing at Denver, where Hopper himself graded out at 42.3. But once the homecookin' was on at Lambeau, Hopper had a respectable defensive grade of 64.5, which falls within expectations of a rookie 3rd Rounder (at least it does for me). It's hard to really take a guess at what Hopper will do once out there for an extended period of time, but if he can hover around 60-69 for several weeks per PFF, we should start to see his snap count grow before taking over completely.

Comparisons

I'm going to keep this short...for now. But I encourage you to let me know in the comments about your favorite team that's not the Packers and these developing storylines. We're going to compare the four LBs taken before and after Hopper. Since I didn't take the time out during the preseason, I will simply compare their depth chart positions for now.

Before Hopper, 92nd Overall

Edgerrin Cooper, 45th Overall - Packers #2 WOLB (4-3)

Junior Colson, 69th Overall - Chargers #5 ILB (3-4 Hybrid)

Trevin Wallace, 72nd Overall - Panthers #3 ILB (3-4)

Marist Liufau, 87th Overall - Cowboys #1 WOLB (4-3)

After Hopper, 92nd Overall

Adisa Issac, 93rd Overall - Ravens #3 SOLB  (3-4)

Payton Wilson, 98th Overall - Steelers #3 ILB (3-4)

Cedric Gray, 106th Overall - Titans #5 ILB (3-4 Hybrid)

Tyrice Knight, 118th Overall - Seahawks #2 ILB (4-3 Hybrid)

I'll keep my eye out for the above names, but outside of Liufau, who's playing on a Cowboys defense that's depleted after Dan Quinn's departure, a lot of these LBs seem relegated to reserve roles in 2024. I could be wrong, but outside of Cooper, Hopper, and maybe Trevin Wallace I don't see the rest of this group locking down a starting gig as a rookie. I could be wrong, as it's super early at this point.

Conclusion

And with it being early, Hopper just needs to earn the trust of his teammates, as well as his coaches. Gutekunst believes he's the future, and so does your favorite Gemologist. With hard work and dedication on and off the field paired with staying healthy, this Gem will start to sparkle sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for Part III of Reassesing as we evaluate Hopper's first real NFL snaps in Week 5.

I think Hopper is a great addition at LB. IMO, a LBs primary job is to tackle people. Hunt them down, pound them into the ground, and punish them for even trying. But in this passing league, you've got to be able to cover a little, or you can't be on the field on first down. Hopper is a good tackler. He's going to help us this year.

He's a back - up.
He was drafted to be a back -up.
Payton Wilson was the better fit.
For starting and Back-up.

How on earth did you get to the conclusion that a 3rd Round Pick is projected to be a career backup?

While I did like Wilson's game, I can't imagine a single alternate universe where Gutekunst would draft him inside the Top 150 given his injury history.

He was projected late 3-5.
His weight is 230, suggesting that
he'll have trouble solo tackling a 230 RB.
And will wear down in the NFL.

While the past injuries scared off many.
The injuries should not have been a problem
for a back-up roll.
PFF top grade told the story.
Gute was wrong.

You're still on his weight? This isn't the 90s and 2000s, LBs aren't 250+ anymore, especially not in a 4-3.

Cooper - 6'2, 229
Hopper - 6'2, 228
McDuffie - 6'1, 227
Walker - 6'4, 241
Wilson - 6'1, 230

So let you tell it, none of the Packers' LBs can tackle a 230lb RB. Oh and by the way, the average weight for a RB in the league is 215. The game is smaller and faster. You need an update.

Walker - 6'4, 241. is their ILB.

Point - After Walker there was a problem.
Gute had to draft it.

Don't be surprised if Cooper ends his career @ OLB.
He was projected there per some draft boards.

I predict your update will fail.

You can't stop power with small.
What Gute is trying to do,
is put a LB on a RB to stop the pass.
And when Walker is out.
This team will get run on.
It's why Gute drafted 2 !!

Hopper reads faster than Walker. His point of engagement is closer to the LOS, not 4-5 yards back.

His pro day numbers don't work for your point.
The lack of size and strength was pointed out
on the scouting reports.
( weight lifting numbers ?????)

Underwear olympics and track meets do not make a Football player. Instincts and recognition, delivery to the ball and sure tackling make the LB. He is the same size as Roquan Smith and most ILBs in Today's game. I put my money on him.

So you're saying he Smith?
LOL - I get you want to praise any packer pick.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
Just admit your wrong when they don't make All-Pro.
Or better yet; when they can't break the starting line-up.

I would never have selected Walker with the #22 pick. Belichick passed over him. Use it for Watson and preserve the two slots in round 2.
He has to be put in position to be playing to make sparks. Walker will never hold that honor.

I like Walker. Give that whole draft time.
I would not have taken Wyatt. - Still have hopes for him.
But Watson there #28.
I also would have kept the picks in the 2nd rd.
I would have grabbed the TE Mc Bride and the NT . Jones

Is that what you said about that Michigan QB from a ways back? A backup? Not highly regarded by the draft entertainment industry (too slow, too much of a statue in the pocket, mostly a backup at Michigan) so therefore always a backup? What was that guy’s name, Tom something… Tom Beatty, something like that. Ended up having a pretty good career, as a starter even.

OK, so that guy was one in a million, but it’s always like that. Career backup Richard Sherman said that certain players get hype, either through their play or other means or a combination thereof, and are able to generate a positive feedback loop as draft entertainers blather about the almighty combine and other useless bullshit. Hyped guys who flop are forgotten, and the beat goes on.

I get it. Like spring flowers & easter, the draft is a symbol of hope and renewal. I imagine it’s especially powerful when you have been snowed under all winter long in your hollow tree up there in the Chequamegon. It’s that hope for a new beginning that keeps you snowshoeing out to that lonely gas station for that first bit of draft porn every year.

I really liked Hopper and he will probably start ahead of Cooper, down the road. He's instinctive. I would still select a CB in lieu of the LB in the second Rd.,but so it goes. See if Wilson can make it through a season w/out an injury?

You could've mentioned Hopper's excellent pass breakup during Family Night, when he dropped deep into coverage. (The announcers said it was Cooper, but they were wrong. Cooper did not even suit up for Family Night.) Hopper had some nice hard tackles throughout the preseason. He has some pop when he hits people. I think he has earned some playing time, but I wouldn't bet on him starting by the end of the season. McDuffie is better than most people think.

Of all the position groups on the offense and defense, linebacker is the one that has the most to prove. Quay Walker has basically been an average starter, while McDuffie is a late draft pick who was an injury fill-in last year. Then there's the journeyman Eric Wilson. But Cooper and Hopper both seem to have a lot of potential. By the end of the season, and maybe a lot sooner, I'm hoping the LBs are pulling their weight. A year or two down the road, they could be really impressive. (Of course I am greedy, and I want them to be impressive right off the bat.)

Payton Wilson, taken AFTER Hopper, I think will start in 2024 and will be a star for years. It’s ironic, many teams (Packers include??) took Wilson off their board for injury concerns. He’s played all summer, and the guy we took instead, Cooper, can’t get on the field.

Wilson's college highlight reel looked as good as Cooper's. He's actually been healthy for the past couple of years, but from what I heard, he may be one knee injury away from his career being over.

It was pointed out, in a since deleted stockholder post, that Hopper was drafted to be a backup. Given that we want Quay on the field, and that McDuffie is the starter, and we have guys like Cooper trying to get on the field......I think that's an honest statement. He's "hopefully" a backup this year, and a good one. We'll see about next year, next year.

scouting reports from guys who aren't scouts. that tracks 100%. disregard the work of the front office and actual scouts whose livelihoods are dependent on their judgment and defer to clickbait merchants. the problem with your world view is that it's not based in the actual world, but rather a virtual world where you can confirm your own bias.

Pro day opinions along with the combine.
It doesn't matter. They will give his weaknesses.
In fact Draft Buzz and Pff are pretty accurate.
Several have a good reputation when it comes to
the top 150 players.
