Caleb Jones is a reminder to me that coaches and personnel execs see things from watching film of players' performances that I do not. Watching Jones in both games, he looked like a keeper (again) to me, admittedly against deep backups. And yet, he is not, apparently, one of the top 4 or 5 OTs on the team. I won't be shocked if he gets cut, because the people making those decisions are professionals, and I am just an uninformed fan.

Were all kind of with you thinking some guy looks good and he's cut? Dont know how much is the money thing and how much is pleasing the GM's higher draft picks? Or both?
Yesterday they were talking, I think it was Miami or Clevland being so far over the cap and having a hoard of top players up for new contracts, a lot of good talent will have to be let go and a rebuild will be required due to lack of money.

PS: One other thing is image. I remember McCarthy talking O linemen and saying he liked them with shorter arms because they can run block better. Just for the heck of it I checked out O line at the time and all of them were within an inch tall of each other and had about the same arm length. I thought, what's wrong with a 6-8 guy who is as big as a house?

If Telfort could play G, I’d be excited. He is big, he is strong and, to use your phrase, looks dominant in a phone box. The problem at T once the real stuff begins is that he’s a lot less mobile than the others. Gary and others figured that out in a practice. You can’t go through but you can go around. Teams will just use speed against him all day.

Telfort is the least mobile T on the roster. Visibly so. He does have longer arms than all but Jones, but he’s slower. You can’t play T in this league if you can’t stop a bull rush, but you also can’t succeed if you can be spun or simply run around. It may work in games where there’s no game planning and vanilla play. In season that weakness is an open door that any DC will jump on and plan for with blitzes as well as DL matchups and moves.

I think you and I see it the same way. I don't think Telfort, or Jones, or any of the rest should be trusted with protecting Jordan Love. If I had to pick one, I guess I'd pick Caleb and hope Tom stays healthy all season..

You never get to go to battle with the army you want; you always have to go with the army you have. I'm really concerned about the depth on our Oline. Yes, another 30 or 40 practices might help improve some people.

I thought that with Morgan-Walker-Tom we'd have a solid group at tackle. I knew that Newman was our primary interior backup. Putting Morgan at RG pushes Newman farther down, but leaves us with no decent backup to Tom or Walker.

Try it this way. One of the tackles goes down and the swing tackle is Morgan. Let the interior chips fall as they may.
