Other than the pick 6 mistake, the worst thing I saw from Clifford was the pass well short of a wide open Allen. That was a close parallel to the Love miss of Musgrave. Just getting too excited by how open their targets were?

I’ve been really interested in Wilson since watching tape when we picked him up. He just looks faster, more agile than his size and testing suggests. He showed that on several carries last night. Can he protect though? He needs more early work to see.

Fingers crossed for Davis, but I think Allen has been a guy who deserved more snaps were it not for the need to get the 2 rookies time and test Davis. Maybe this is a case of a door opening? I was puzzled by your comment that Allen is not a blocking TE. He needed work coming out as it was t his prime job in college, but physically willing if unpolished. At his size that’s understandably been a focus of his teams since. He also had the best TE run block of the night.

I wonder if Pearson is the main beneficiary on STs—he’s a an experienced college STer (nearly 400 snaps) with a similar physical profile. It could be his route to a roster spot.

No mention of Toure? The guy just seems to get open and looks as polished as anyone.

I don’t see both Wicks and Heath on the active roster absent injuries. Especially given how they are using Musgrave.

More impressed by Sapp than Johnson Jr.. Wooden had a good game I thought among those not mentioned.

CW, agreed on all points. Especially #31, Eric Wilson! Not only is he our second biggest RB behind Dillon, but he flat out comes through and before last night too. One preseason game doesn't end the competition for RB#3 I hope, but he certainly improved his chances last night. WOW!!

I hope #84 Davis' shin injury [ETA: torn ACL. Season ender. Hopefully his career isn't over] I agree that # 49 Allen at 6'8 253# should not be a scrub yet. I'd love to see TE get used a LOT and that includes on runs (or at fullback if we preserve that distinction, I don't see why 49 should be removed from consideration there)

Other injuries: 5 players down?!? I hope these are all minor but odds are probably against that. I only saw Tenuta's; I hope that's not a high ankle sprain and anxiously await news on all of them ...

In college Deguara played H back but nearest to fullback really. The difference is that he didn’t really run the ball personally and was far more involved in blocking for others and the passing offense in terms of motion , focus and variety than a modern FB. He was a passing weapon running route types/concepts we’ve seldom seen—the rare one that comes to mind wax his long TD from Love. He’s a better run blocker than he ever was in line.

That works for me! 49ers use Jusczyk (sp?) like that, to *very* good effect. No reason to think #44 Pearson couldn't be at least as effective as DeGuara at this, eventually. Even if he is #2 for now.
