Packers Need To Fix Red Zone Struggles On Offense

The difference between winning and losing in the NFL is usually razor thin and the Green Bay Packers came out on the short end more often than expected in 2022. There were many reasons for the team’s struggles this season but one rather unexpected one was their inability to get into the end zone on offense once they got into the red zone.

For the season, the Packers ranked 24th in the NFL in scoring touchdowns once they got inside the red zone.

Head coach Matt LaFleur admitted this was a problem in his press conference after the loss in the season finale against Detroit.

“There is a lot we have to study this offseason,” LaFleur told reporters. “Whether it was poor play design, or lack of execution or all of the above, it wasn’t good enough. We did a piss-poor job in the red zone. I’ve said it before, sometimes you kick enough field goals, and you’ll get yourself beat. That’s kinda what happened.”

The two games against Detroit were perhaps the most dramatic examples of this. In Week 9, the Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw two interceptions inside the red zone on the team’s first two drives of the game. A third interception happened just outside the red zone when the Pack had the ball at the Detroit 22 but the ball was intercepted at the 3.

The next two red zone trips resulted in one touchdown and then the Pack settled for a field goal after reaching the Detroit 7.

A final trip to the red zone late in the game stalled when the Pack turned the ball over on downs at the Detroit 17 in the final minute down by six points.

In the season finale, the offense wasn’t much better. The opening drive saw the Pack have the ball first-and-goal at the Detroit 5 but they settled for three points.

Later in the first quarter, the Packers got to the Detroit 20 but Rodgers held the ball too long and took a sack and again, the Packers settled for a field goal by Mason Crosby.

The Packers later scored one touchdown in the red zone in the game but certainly had several chances to score more. They lost by four points.

The talent is on this roster to do better in the red zone. They’ve done better in the past. For some reason, Aaron Jones, who had eight rushing touchdowns in 2018, 16 rushing touchdowns in 2019 and nine rushing touchdowns in 2020 only for two this season.

Big back A.J. Dillon had only one touchdown through the first 11 games before scoring six late in the season when the coaching staff realized it might be a good idea to give their 250-pound running back the ball close the goal line.

Tight end Robert Tonyan scored 11 touchdowns the last time he was healthy for a full season in 2020 but scored only two in 2022.

Yes, the Packers were without Davante Adams, Rodgers’ favorite red zone target, but there were still experienced receivers available in Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb before Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs got up to speed later in the season.

Too often the play calling was poor and predictable. The team didn’t run the ball enough or effectively. When they tried to throw, Rodgers’ accuracy was off in part due to his broken thumb. For some reason, the thumb injury seemed to hurt his accuracy more on shorter passes like those near the end zone and those in the flat, than they did with longer throws.

The younger receivers lack of chemistry with Rodgers was also a factor early in the season. Down by the goal line, improvising and being on the same page as your quarterback is vital to the success of the team especially when plays get extended and the receivers need to break off their routes. That wasn’t always there especially in the first half of the campaign.

Whether it was play calling, a lack of trust in the new receiving corps or the fact that the offense was not in sync, the team failed to be consistent in the red zone. Unfortunately, LaFleur and his coaching staff now have plenty of time to figure this out before training camps open again in late July.

One thing is for certain, unless the Packers improve in the red zone next season, their results won’t be dramatically better in 2023 than they were in 2022.

Wonder if MaLF is considering bringing in his brother, now that he's been fired by the Jets? I know I couldn't work with my brother, but maybe having his brother around to point out his shortcomings could head off some of these problems at the pass.

Maybe having his brother around as OC or Passing game Coordinator, working in tandem together, MaLF could become a better HC overall? Play design!? MaLF needs a some help for sure, maybe his brother is the answer? IDK

I was wondering the same thing. But I wouldn't feel comfortable hiring his brother as GB does not need another YES MAN in their coaching ranks. I feel that hiring Mike might just be a way for Matt to exert his own flawed ideas down to the coordinator level which I fear has happened this last season with Steno.

Same red zone issues with His brother and Hackett, for the matter. Ineffective Scoring with their Play sets. Move up the COC to LaFleur. Stasis will not produce better results. The Shepherd Express article raised the rest of the hackles. This guy has to go along with his boss. Not looking forward to Packers 2023.

IMO the Packers downward spiral in the Redzone came when Tonyan got hurt. In 2020 Tonyan had 11 TD's. The last 2 years he has had 4 total.

I think its pretty simple. If they want to improve in the endzone they have to get more threats at the TE position!

I think next year will improve with Watson and Doubs having a year under their belts. But, they need to improve the TE position to have real threats in the redzone as well as the downfield passing game.

Which is why I am actually excited we signed UDFA TE Austin Allen. Some college production, big hands, huge wing span, 6' 8" 260 lbs. - I'm hopeful he can come in, develop, and be a Red Zone threat.

Not many DBs can go up high enough to defend a guy 6' 8" with over an 80" wing span, even if he just gets in the endzone and turns around.

The thumb wasn't the issue in the games so much. The lack of practice with his WRs during the weeks before games might have been more of an issue.

The line didn't practice much together all year either.

They kept saying the vets didn't need to, but what about the guys around them? Isn't it hard to know what the other guy's going to do if you don't practice it in game type situations against a D that looks like the one you're going to play?

I couldn't agree more Steve. You would think that paying an over the hill QB $50Mil guaranteed for 3 years would entitle you to expect that the QB would work out early in the off season with his young receivers to develop some chemistry prior to the start of the season? I guess that's too much to ask of Mr Rodgers lol? I would love to be a fly on the wall listening to those GM management/Rodgers talks that are supposedly going on this week? If ever a team needed to change its culture - its GB right now. Now is the time to find some toughness and guts. And maybe a new, tougher cultural direction should start in these talks with Mr Rodgers?

If the Head Cheerleader stays, which is likely, he needs to take strong managerial action like Jets HC - Robert Saleh. He fired his offensive staff which included MLF's brother. This after two years of offensive floundering. The same can be said about the 2 years of GB Packer defensive floundering. In addition, MLF needs to look deep into the mirror for the offensive malaise.

Predictability.
A Defense can certainly get beat between the 20's by a predictable Offense, but a predictable Offense cannot beat a Defense with that same predictable Offense in a restricted area like the RZ. Adams offset that predictability in the RZ. Watson, even with his TDs, wasn't a RZ TD threat. Lazard needs a Defensive breakdown to make him a factor, and why the run doesn't instill the same confidence. Lastly, what about the OL play in the RZ vs between the 20's? That's another game in itself, also, that a Defense can manipulate easier because of predictability. MLF and Rodgers are now, both predictable.

You nailed it TarynsEyes. Even Adams was more or less neutralized by good playoff teams in the red zone. Even before the season began, I bitched that I could usually guess the play they were going to run 80% of the time by the personnel package and formation they were setting up in (pat myself on the back here). It actually got worse when they even started running out of the shotgun to pick up two yards or less.

Excellent point about being predictable in restricted areas.

This is partially a play-calling issue, partially a lack of creativity in regards to personnel (how about some jumbo packages or using a FB once in a while?), and partially a lack of straight up power in the run-blocking department. And a threat at TE would help immensely.

For what it's worth, Hackett was supposedly responsible for much of the red zone play-calling in the previous three years, but we also had Adams for the previous three years, so maybe those two are offsetting.

The redzone is the most compressed field an offense will see. The Packers had problems all year opening up the field and defenses knew it. Now with even less area for the defense to be concerned with the offense ground to a halt. Additional personnel isn't the solution, but a complete change in their approach to the offense. I really don't think MLF has it in his DNA to make the necessary adjustments so a new OC is needed, but that doesn't mean we need another La Poodle or going back to Hackett, but if the choice comes down to MLF playcalling, MiLF, or Hackett, I would vote Hackett every time. The thing that may get lost in the Packers leadership is that THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS.

Like many fans, I feel that GB badly needs a new OC especially in trips into the red zone. But MLF, of course, won't want to change out Steno because, well, that would mean CHANGE and admitting that another of his coaching choices was flawed once again. Sigh... I would love to see Hackett back in GB at least as an offensive consultant. He works well with Rodgers and has good red zone schemes. And better yet, when the "same old suspects" fail again - with old band back together again - in GB in 2023, only then will GBs' FO realize that MLF must go. And this could then be Hacketts' chance again at being a HC. Hopefully, he would have learned from his failure in Denver and be a better HC as a result. I guess we all have our dreams. GPG

Have the Fans learned from their failures? We know MLF needs to go, now. Stay away from the Shanahan coaching legacy. His old man's last gig in D.C. essentially drove Robert Griffin onto the permanent disabled list.
Hackett can collect his cash and watch film of the new offenses coming from the college ranks.

I missed this when I first read the article:

“There is a lot we have to study this offseason,” LaFleur told reporters."Whether it was poor play design, or lack of execution or all of the above, it wasn’t good enough. We did a piss-poor job in the red zone. I’ve said it before, sometimes you kick enough field goals, and you’ll get yourself beat. That’s kinda what happened.”

That is the issue in a nutshell. He needs weeks of film review to have any idea what they did right and wrong (I'm assuming he does get it, but that is up for debate). At this level you need a Head Coach who can make those conclusions faster and sometimes, you know, during the game (*gasp* from MLF). His "instant" analysis is that maybe they kicked too many field goals. Ahhhh, no. Here is a HC who is six feet tall standing at the bottom of the marianis trench trying to spot the surface. i.e. he is way out of his depth. Unfortunately, MLF isn't just challenged coming up with analyzing results he also seems to struggle with identifying which players have potential without a mound of data. Zack Tom showed me enough in training camp/preseason that he needed to get snaps, but MLF double dipped with Jake Hanson and Royce Newman. Amari Rodgers? Does it take that long for MLF to "get it"? Sammy Watkins? He was done the day he had his first snaps with the Packers. Why even gameplan around him, they could have just elevated Winfree and got better results. He just doesn't get it.

He likes consistency. Unfortunately, all the other NFL teams like his consistency too.

Well, very often, after he lose game his statment was: "I do not know what happened and why team do not play better!"

I believe 31 other franchise GMs will make change in coaching staff immediately after first time HC would say that. But not Mark Murphy!

Okay. It pains me to even think that all the coaches will be back next year along with all the same players with restructuring contracts and pushing us even further into a dark cap abyss. We can only hope now that the coaches and FO understand that if they fail yet again, it will have been their last dance as well. If they feel that their seats are hot, maybe they all grow a pair, put a shock collar on Rodgers, play aggressively on defense, MLF delegating his play calling, while actually paying attention to the f’n game and stop waving his arms to the fans like we’re stupid and don’t know when to be loud.

Gil, I understand that you are trying to be positive in this situation when many of us think that the Change is needed to be done immediately.

I do expect nothing new if coaching staff stays as it was last season (and season before). Well, I think ST will improve further, but O and D will be worse. That means worse record next season than this season.

As just finished (for Packers and rest of 18 teams) seasons went game by game I become more contra MLF because of his softness, play calling and game plans. It looked like the coaching staff did not watch opponents and preparing game plans for each opponent specifically, but just picking the number of plays from play book and went from game to game with that.

That view looks logical as we saw same play calls vs different teams without any specific plays that would be designed to exploit opponents weaknesses. It looks like Packers used 20-25 play calls whole season, no matter who was their opponent. Only deviations from those play calls was when ACR was doing something on his hand (like hero balls and similar things).

Total disaster, not because of the result, but because how team play bad and boring. And MLF was surprised why team plays w/o energy and passion.

My God. Another year of the same shit is in front of us.

It seems off to me that players 3-4 years into their career need to be taught tackling techniques, footwork etc. I can see working on weaknesses and building on strengths, repetition etc. to hone skills, but I hope that since most have been through HS, College, and pro training camps they would be excellent at the basic skills of their profession. Maybe a lot of these guys get by on athleticism and finesse, but eventually someone smarter and hungrier guy will out compete them. There were fundamental breakdowns all season in the red zone. Rodgers looked uncomfortable with his receivers and he predictably let the play clock run so everyone knew when the snap would come. Defenses were fooled 3 or 4 times this year, like the one Lewis got a couple of games ago. Rodgers getting sacked at the 17 after trying to throw out of the shotgun on 2nd down ending up with field goals not touchdowns. This happened repeatedly and that falls on Rodgers. MLF’s play calling and game management is boring and predictable.

Tackling and blocking need to be practiced all the time. Just like professional musicians have to practice to keep sharp. The players union won't let them practice it very much and this is what you get.

A professional musician once told me, "Amateurs practice till they get it right. Professionals' practice till they can't get it wrong."

Wrong, wrong, wrong, just all wrong. If the Packers want to score from the red Zone their OL must play better.

Yes predictability is an issue as is play calling but execution is what matters in the red zone and on the goal line. Only Gale sayers could score in the red zone based upon on how the Packers OL has played in the red zone the last 2 seasons. Just watch the game. You will see they are consistently beat off the snap. Except for Bak they are too high and are usually getting pushed into the backfield.

We can blame MLC and he deserves some blame, we can blame a lack of weapons which is mostly irrelevant and we can blame Rodgers because he gets blamed for everything even if he hands the ball off to Dillon in the Red zone and he fails to score. Then we blame him for not working with his receivers even though he did not miss a day or a practice in the entire training camp. WTF??? When else is Rodger supposed to work with his receivers??? Duh! Talk about totally off the topic.

The reality is and the fact of the matter is it's about the OL. They are consistently outplayed in the Red Zone. That is the Red zone issue for the Packers. The other points are just speculation and nonsense not Red Zone football. This is about blocking and how well it is executed.

I would be hard pressed to find a more predictable Red Zone offense than the Lombardi Packers. And yet they were probably the best red zone team of all time.
Why? Because Lombardi's OL executed. It didn't matter if it was Hornung, Taylor, Elijah Pitts, Earl Gros, Grabowski, Donny Anderson, Travis Williams, Ben Wilson or Chuck Mercein, they scored! End of story. Get people blocked and you will score in the Red Zone. Get people blocked and Jones and Dillon will score plenty. Heck get people blocked and even George Plimpton will score.

When Matt LaChooch watches the tape this off season he needs to focus on the OL. Doesn't need an expert, well maybe someone who actually understands football, just watch the execution or lack of by the OL. That's where the failures are. If Matt LaChooch can't figure it out hire an actual OL coach or better yet an actual, qualified NFL HC who knows what he is watching, knows what he is doing and is willing to kick some butt to get results. End of story. Closing time. Case closed. Thanks, Since '61

Not end of story. When they’re inside the 5 yard line, they need to get big and stop this shotgun handoff crap. Going big with the QB under center, they have options. Play action opens up a TE fading away from his block to side of the end zone, power running, PA QB keeper towards the corner of the end zone. Their goal line and short yardage calls and formations are what put the OL in dire straits. These coaches suck. Shotgun should be between the 20’s and even then only be 20% of your snaps.

crayzpackfan - I agree with you 100%. I would stop the shotgun and get big as well. But play action or power run or not The OL still needs to execute. The Packers have used power run with Dillon and have been stuffed because they are getting beat off the snap. Having said that I agree that simpler formations and simpler plays are the way to go but it doesn't go if the OL doesn't make it go.

And yes these coaches suck. Quite frankly it's just stupid football and they are becoming the league's poster boys for stupidity. Speaking for myself I don't do stupid. I just shake my head and walk away.

The beauty of an OL working in synchrony,

The constant changes not due to injury but often due to mere stupidity was the death blow once again. As I keep harping on in a recent post is the priority has to be the OL

Through the draft, and off-season the focus has to be finding BIG mean, fast, and tough Offensive lineman. Then put together a starting lineup with the best available talent and let them play together. Anything else is just going sideways.

I love Jamaal Williams but AJ DIllon is a better back.

So how does Jamaal get 17 TDs and "A.J. Dillon have only one touchdown through the first 11 games before scoring six late in the season"?

Play selection and the QB in pistol at the five and in short yardage instead of under center.

And I get the logic of going to the pass play alternative when the O comes to the line and sees the D lined up expecting a run, but (a) seeing a stacked box cannot be a surprise so maybe make the alternate play a pitch wide or similar to get outside and (b) Ds expect the run because other Os make it work so practice the hell out of short yardage running plays to overcome GB's clear deficiency in them.

For me it's a sad trip down memory lane to explain the problem.
Packers up big on Seattle, winner goes to sb. We intercept and have ball on like the 7. TD probably puts the game away. Seattle has one of the best cover corners in game and are scary good. Rodgers calls three running plays and we settle for a field goal and lose the game.
I said to myself the sob is so worried about tossing a pick he audibled runs 5o save his ass. Nothing has changed except head coach.
