He's Back

The Packers will bring Aaron Rodgers back on a four year, $200 million deal.

Aaron Rodgers will return to quarterback the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to a four year, $200 million deal, per NFL Network.

We will obviously need to wait and see on the exact details regarding the cap number and how the next three years of the contract actually break down.

But for now, the Packers will continue to attempt to win a championship with Aaron Rodgers under center.

Next up - getting a long term deal done with Davante Adams.

I'll be interested to see the contract details, but it tells us several things:

1. Front office doesn't see enough potential in Jordan Love to turn the keys over to him.
2. The salary cap is out the window. Kick the can down the road some more and then this roster is getting blown up.
3. Gutekunst and LaFleur's contracts are up soon too and perhaps that factored into this....when you win a Super Bowl you earn a longer leash and more credibility.
4. Douglas, Campbell, Z and others are toast....as is that championship defense we once had.
5. The Russell Wilson trade confirms that we knew Denver was willing to sell the farm for Rodgers....oh my goodness what a deal that was, I would've just said keep Lock and send a WR instead!
6. We will never have any money for anyone worth a crap on special teams.
7. Rodgers claimed he wouldn't drag it out, but guess what? He did! Free agency starts next week! Time for Gutekunst and co. to burn the midnight oil and figure out this mess.
8. The Rodgers - front office drama narrative is shattered.
9. NFC got weaker with Wilson leaving Seattle and Brady retiring.
10. Ted Thompson is probably rolling in his grave somewhere. This ain't draft and develop anymore.

What's this championship defense you speak of?

The defense might have been good enough to help win a super bowl. I don't think Rossonero meant it was a dominant defense. If they had beaten the 49ers, then perhaps ZaDarius, Alexander and Mercilus might have had enough time to regain their form, enough so to make it quite a good defense. Or maybe not.

I thought it was the best defense we've had since the last Super Bowl run. They played lights out vs. the Niners. What cost us was the offense sputtering and the special teams implosion. The defense did its job and was only getting healthier as TGR noted - Jaire, Z, Mercilus, etc.

As long as this deal tanks us in time for Arch Manning I’m good with it!

Qb contracts outdate faster than any other, because it is not about the player but instead about the time they sign. Every new contract pushes the bar further. Rodgers was going to get that money in GB, in Pittsburgh or Denver. The next one (for example kyler murray) is going to reach new heights even though he is not a better player. So i do not hate the contract money wise. With the salary cap rising it isnt a huge lift from the percentage they are spending now in the position, its about 1/4.

We all knew the retirement talk was blackmail from Rodgers and the whole thing was about guaranteed money. Unless he retired they had contractual control of him til 2024, with cap hits of 46M in 2022 and 33M in 2023. The franchise tag for Qbs is 29,73M this season,so no matter what franchise tagging him say 2024 was going to be cheaper than what he is going to make with his new deal. GB has been incredibly generous towards him.

There are good and bad things to say about the deal. First, maybe he shuts his mouth off for a change. Good for him if he gets more money and guarantees, isnt it what we all want in our regular jobs? Then we can stop talking about him and focus on the packers. Hope is the last thing you lose...
The main positive is we are going to remain competitive. I dont trust Jordan Love and lets face it Rodgers is great if not the best in bussiness. We will suck in the near future as all rebuilding teams do. There are no sure things when you have a ton of draft ammo. But lets not rush it. We are a better team now with AR and Davante than we were going to be. A watchable packer team come fall is always a good thing.

The negative. The formula of a superstar Qb (who is getting older) who accounts for a quarter of our budget hasnt worked so far. The same can be said of a lot of teams. Most of the active Qb that made it to the SB did it on their rookie deals. Brady took much less than Rodgers both in GB and in Tampa. Are the Rams an outlier? we will see. I dont think sticking with Rodgers is going to win us a Superbowl but who knows, NFC is cheaper and cheaper, Bucs and Rams are losing talent, and if Gutekunst manages to put a similar even a worse roster than the 2021 one, probably the gap between GB and the rest of the conference is bigger.

Go pack go!
