Packers Deeper and More Talented at Wide Receiver

For the past few years, the Packers have had questions at the wide receiver position beyond Pro Bowl WR1, Davante Adams. But now, the team is deeper and more talented at the position than they have been in recent seasons.

Green Bay’s offense led the league in scoring in 2020 and now the receiving corps looks even better on paper entering 2021 than it did a year ago.

Here is a look at the Packers depth chart at wide receiver heading into minicamps:

1. Davante Adams

Adams is the undisputed number one receiver in Green Bay and may be the best wideout in the league right now. He set a Packers franchise single-season record with 115 catches for 1,374 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing two games due to injury.

The Fresno State alum has exceptional chemistry with Aaron Rodgers and beats defenders consistently despite a lack of elite speed. Adams uses fakes and body control to gain an advantage on corners immediately off the snap of the ball.

He is in his prime now and should continue to provide the Packers with exceptional play for the next several seasons assuming he signs a contract extension as expected.

2. Allen Lazard

Lazard is the Packers best blocking wide receiver and he uses his size to his advantage when creating interference on running plays.

In the passing game, he uses his 6’5”, 227-pound frame to get open in the middle of the field and to pick up key first downs.

The former undrafted free agent from Iowa State has earned the trust of his quarterback and has become more consistent as he continues to develop into a reliable NFL receiver.

In 2020, Lazard caught 33 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns despite missing six complete games due to injury. If he can take another step forward, he can carve out an even bigger role in the Packers offense.

3. Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Make no mistake about it, MVS is a burner. His elite speed makes him dangerous any time he gets his hands on the football. The key for Valdes-Scantling will be making the catches he’s supposed to make on a more consistent basis.

Last season, MVS caught 33 passes for 690 yards and six touchdowns while leading qualified receivers in the NFL with a 20.9-yard average. The downside is that his catch percentage was only 52.4 according to Pro-football-reference.com. One big reason for the low catch percentage was that Valdes-Scantling was credited with seven dropped passes in 63 targets.

If MVS can become more consistent with his hands and at winning contested balls, he can be a special weapon in the Green Bay offense. The 2020 season was a big step forward for him but this year will be a key campaign to just how good he can become.

4. Amari Rodgers

The Packers coaching staff is excited about the potential of third-round pick Amari Rodgers out of Clemson. Although he’s only listed at 5’10”, Rodgers is a strong 210 pounds and has the body type that suggests he can take the pounding of an NFL season.

Rodgers is expected to be utilized in the slot and on gadget plays like jet sweeps, screens and end arounds as a rookie and will also get a chance to be part of the return game in training camp.

Because of his different body type and skill set, Rodgers should have a role in the Green Bay offense almost immediately. He is likely to take over the Tyler Ervin role as a rookie and could eventually develop into a player like Randall Cobb in his prime.

The big question in 2021 will be how quickly he picks up the playbook in his debut season.

5. Devin Funchess

Funchess is a bit of a wild card for the Packers in 2021. He signed with the team as a free agent prior to last season but elected to opt out of the 2020 campaign because of concern for family during the pandemic. Now he is back and ready to contribute.

The former Michigan star’s best season came in 2017 when he had 63 catches for 840 yards and eight touchdowns with the Carolina Panthers.

Funchess has only played one NFL game over the last two seasons since he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 of 2019. If he can return to his previous form, he can give Green Bay a reliable big target who can be a threat over the middle and in the red zone because of his size.

6. Equanimeous St. Brown

This will be a make or break season for St. Brown. The former Notre Dame star has battled injuries that cost him all the 2019 season and several games in 2020. Last year, he made seven catches for 117 yards and caught his first career NFL touchdown.

At 6’5”, EQ has outstanding size and he can run well after making the catch. The key to his game will be staying healthy and being more consistent.

St. Brown has shown flashes of ability especially late in his rookie season. If he can put it all together in his third year in the NFL, he can be a steady contributor to the Green Bay attack. If he doesn’t step up and show improvement, he may not make the final roster.

7. Other Candidates

The Packers have several other wide receivers in camp who will be fighting for spots on the roster and/or the practice squad. Malik Taylor made the roster last year as an undrafted free agent and caught five passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. The former Ferris State star was pedestrian at returning kicks but may get a shot to compete for that job again in training camp. He was also a steady contributor on special teams.

Reggie Begelton spent most of the season on the practice squad but was activated for one game and played two snaps on offense without having a pass thrown his way. The Packers are hoping the 27-year-old former CFL star can continue to adjust to the NFL game and provide the offense with another weapon.

Other undrafted free agents who will be in training camp include Chris Blair, a deep threat out of Alcorn State, the same school that Donald Driver came from and Bailey Gaither, a San Jose State product who set a school record by scoring touchdowns in six consecutive games in 2019. Also returning is second-year man Juwann Winfree who played two games with the Packers late last season, taking eight snaps on offense and 21 on special teams.

The potential is there for this to be a deeper and improved unit over the group the Packers had in 2020. Of course, the question that still needs to be answered is who will be throwing them the football this season.

Oppy - can’t get back to the other thread from earlier today. But the article I referred to is on Lombardiavenue.com.
Titled, “Rodgers situation shows lack of confidence in Love.”

I don’t know if the writer is reliable or not but that was the source. Probably just more off season fantasy.

One of the most risible articles out there. The premise is simple: if Love had showed anything at all, at the first shingle from Rodgers, the Packers would have shown Rodgers the door. From this he infers that the reason that the Packers want to keep Rodgers us that Love is massively inept.

I could go on to point out the failures in his understanding of the Favre process or history, but the whole premise is so ridiculously backwards. Zero credibility would be my answer to the question you posed. I quote the cite of his “thinking”:

“If Love was showing even the faintest glimmers of promise in practice everyday, the Packers would do the same thing they did with Favre, and turn the page. They’re not keeping Rodgers around because it’s the best thing for the team. Rather, Brian Gutekunst knows how royally he screwed up the whole situation, and doesn’t want to see Jordan Love on the field within the next 10,000 contractions of the universe.”

If you buy that, I’ve a used bridge to sell ...

If you want an excursion to the absurd, you can find the whole piece here: https://lombardiave.com/2021/05/19/packers-aaron-rodgers-confidence-jord...

I read this article. If I were still teaching school, I’d use it to teach critical reading.

The article is chock full of unsubstantiated claims, and even some mind reading by the author, Evan Siegel. He shows his bias, early and often, and his central premise is that the Packers front office doesn’t know what they’re doing.

So, you can buy what he’s selling, or you can look at the facts. Either the Packers are run by a bunch of bumbling nitwits who hired more bumbling nitwits who make draft choices that make no sense.....or the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about and is currently stuck on Anger/Blame.

I’ll take “Authors who don’t have a clue” for $1000, Alex. This piece isn’t analysis; It’s fanboy venting.

Interesting that it was Evan Siegel who posited the most recent trade scenario that includes both AR and Davante to DEN. Makes me wonder if he isn't more of an Aaron Rodgers fan ...

Fanboy, Evan Siegel. Why don't you start looking for places in Denver, Evan???

Exactly. I haven’t seen anything by Seigel before. I figured someone here in CHTV might be more familiar with him than I am. I don’t know if he is part of the GB/Wisconsin media or not.

But now that greengold pointed out his trade scenario it seems like he goes pretty far beyond the fringe.

I only saw the article because one of my research team from my company stays in touch with me now that I retired by sending me relevant business articles, white papers and some Packers stuff like this article by Seigel.

He’s a Rodger’s guy but he is in it for Fantasy Football rather than being a Packers fan. Rodgers has been his FF QB from Day One. He also knows that I don’t follow the other blogs so he sent it along with his daily communication with me.

In any case I will be filing this under crazy, outrageous off-season sensationalism as opposed to usual off-season crap and speculation. Thanks, Since ‘61

The writer is completely in lala land.

When you draft a developmental QB you need to develop him so ya, The Packers aren't thrilled about him starting a year or two earlier than planned.

But an even bigger failure by the author (who was just looking for click bait reaction by throwing out red meat for the clueless fans to gnaw on) was that What GM worth their salt wouldn't reconsider the timeline after the huge turnaround AR just showed? Sure Gute would probably like to see AR repeat that for a year or two before paying a 40YO QB top dollar. That may no longer be an option. Somehow we love to take a winning situation and turn it into a losing situation. AR wasn't playing like a Top 5 QB for the last few years and was showing some age along with resistance to change. they draft a QB of the future as insurance both in his play and AR Salary Cap Issue. What happens - OHH Nooo AR has an MVP season. Cool, thats an awesome thing right, more good news, he's still under contract for 3 more years, just push the Kid back if need be and see what happens. So you now have an aging MVP QB under contract and a Developmental QB on the Roster. Great situation to have around the most important position on your roster. But no, somehow its a bad thing. Yes, AR is throwing a fit (ps, he would've anyway he wants more years and guaranteed money whether Love is there or not and being under contract this is his only option and guess what it may just work for AR).
OH but they are wasting a 1st and 4th rd pick - So what if they do. Its peanuts compared to the big picture. theres no doubt he did obtain the best value on the board. They could of used the Pick to help the team - ya right- to make the #1 offense the #1 offense by more? ok. Its not the lack of players that cost them but the good players they had making mistakes that cost them. That's not even debatable. ARhas stated publicly that Love is not an issue (mike Silver article) so people this was going to happen this offseason no matter what once AR had an MVP season.

True, Leatherhead, but the offense did very well last year despite what the fans and experts said and the additions of Amari Rodgers and Funchess plus the potential improvement of players like MVS, Lazard and EQ gives reason for hope. Will be interesting to see how this unit performs this season. Thanks for commenting.

Amari R I like a lot because he has potential, Lazard could be ok if he can come back, and MVS is mainly a deep threat that catches the ball half the time.. But hold on mvs had the best season out all the wr that year as you profoundly proclaimed as fact..:) I guess us “ fans” need better fact based info like you provide right ?

I don’t know about the season, that would be Adams as the best receiver. MVS certainly improved his catch rate and the variety of routes over the season and was definitely the best receiver in the championship game.

Overall, the O was the best O through the regular season, so the overall threat and efficacy is there and supported the ratings that Rodgers achieved. It takes 2 to make a downfield play (at least: not to forget the line and blockers).

Why would you root for a team that has garbage? And by extension, the GM who drafted them and the organization that drafted him? And how does garbage put 40 passing TDs on the board?

MVS was our best receiver in the Championship game. Fact. He dropped some balls. His catch rate is also affected by the number of deep balls where he’s targeted, because those are completed at a lower percentage than short throws.

In his first two seasons, Davante Adams had a catch% just above 50%. Thank God the people running the show didn’t think he was garbage.

I love MVS and he is definitely a mismatch problem for opposing Ds. Myself, just hoping this ship does turn around.

Remember when Davante had all the drops? The next season, he'd drop another important, easy ball to start the game, but, then he'd make most of his catches the rest of the game? Miss the early super easy, then make all these insane, tough grabs.

Thinking maybe we see that kind of improvement. There is another factor that comes into play having Jordan Love throwing to him, should this trade thing be real. Davante started really turning around year 3 & 4. Maybe for MVS it is year 4 & more...

AR put a ton of pressure on his WRs to complete plays. Rightly so, but, I think he overdid that a bit to a fault. Wouldn't even throw to guys who might have liked to win a contested catch...

Maybe things are very, very different in GB with our WR room if AR leaves. There is that possibility they might rally around Jordan Love. We'll see.

Funchess ran a 4.7 at the combine. Scouts laud 4.3 as elite, 4.4 as fast. 4.5/4.6 as WR pedestrian. What is 4.7? Plodding?

He must run really good routes or has Adams like quickness at the snap or both. Some good production at Carolina.

My dark horse is ESB. Size and excellent speed and a very good blocker. Kid cannot stay healthy. If he does, it will be like getting two new producing 2021 WRs in ESB and Amari.

MVS will can now continue his growth and become a legitimate #2. Lazard will get so many snaps because of his run blocking (50% of the snaps are runs), and his size/speed to make himself a target.

Funchess has great size. He even played TE initially at Michigan. Speed is not his game, but his size and route running allow him to gain an advantage on smaller defenders.

I am pulling for St. Brown to stay healthy and get a chance to show what he can do.

If MVS gets more consistent, look out. Thanks for the comment, LambeauPlain.

Funchess was seen as the best TE in that draft and probably most teams might have used him there (move type of course).

He also ran a 4.48 at his pro day, so under 5 even with a big adjustment. Probably that size and speed got him moved to WR.

ESB was my favorite WR pick (for the Packers) in that draft.
I think he has great potential but as you said, can't stay on the field.

As gil mentioned in the article, he started showing what he could do at the tail end of his rookie season, but between health issues and squandered opportunities, I'm not sure what to make of him any more.

He's definitely got a nice skill set. Wishing for the best.

It takes 0.2 seconds to blink. So, in gym shorts, over 40 yards, that’s the difference between elite and pedestrian?

Don’t put so much stock in 40 times.

So the CB covering him can’t just line up two yards farther downfield? Have you ever played DB? Don’t you give those burners a little more space? Or is it just not possible to cover a guy who is faster? Why wasn’t MVS open on every play?

Don’t believe the hype. Speed is nice but that 0.2 doesn’t really mean that much unless you’re chasing them.....in which case, you’ve already screwed up.

I’d say is 50:50 he makes the roster. I question his desire and focus, a concern voiced by scouts when he came out. He also seems to be sidelined by injury easily. With the ball in his hands, he has potential, but I think it is now or never, I think others will push him hard. His contract is now no longer than Funchess’s, it’s definitely not a given that he is retained.

Lambeau,
I too have always had high expectations of ESB, particularly after his rookie season. If healthy with his skill set 'if a QB' targets him he has the highest upside in my opinion to really flash this year out of the unknown WR's on the team. The talent is definitely there!

I also hope the Packers renew MVS contract. I only see continued growth and upside for MVS. He definitely has upside and is steadily improving each year. IMHO, I believe he is one of those players who will continue to improve for the next 2 or 3 years before plateauing. He is one of those late bloomer type players.

For 'fans' who can't tell the difference, the following is sarcasm.
------
If only the Packers had spent a first-round pick on a wide receiver in 2020! Why the Packers certainly would have won the Super Bowl! Never mind that the defense looked shaky. That new wide receiver would have stunned the world and led to a certain Super Bowl! Look at the Vikings who took one of those sure-bet receivers. He did pretty well, but gee, there must have been something wrong with the general manager because they didn't win the Super Bowl! All it takes is drafting a receiver in the first round!

Those dopes in the Packers front office picked a....QUARTERBACK! A guy, though his name is Love, we simply can't show any for him because...HE'S NOT A WIDE RECEIVER! Not drafting a wide receiver made the $240 Million Dollar Man cry and now he wants to take his ball and go home unless the Packers do more!

You really need another superstar wide receiver so he can stand around on the 50 percent of plays called by Matt LaFleur! Who needs to run the ball half the time when you have a HIGH DRAFT PICK standing all alone in the end zone for another touchdown pass? Forget the tight ends who also need the ball, the All-Pro running back and the other wide receiver! Throw it to the draft pick who will win all the games!

And remember, only #1 draft picks are worth anything. Not Adams, a second rounder, or the Packers All-Time leading pass catcher, Donald Driver, a seventh-rounder. Bart Starr was a worthless QB, too, drafted in the 17th round for goodness sake!

Yup, if only the Packers had drafted a wide receiver number one last year all would be happy in Packerland.
And we won't even bring up the fact they waited until round 3 this year to pick a WIDE RECEIVER!

I think Amari Rodgers could be a valuable asset as a WR for the Packers, but I wouldn't expect to see him on end arounds and jet sweeps. He's not a burner type.

But motioning across the formation and taking a direct snap and working between the tackles in a so called "gadget" play? Yeah, I could see that.

Oppy, he is perfect for jet sweeps, fake sweeps that result in a flat screen as well as pure slot routes. His calling card is power and RB ability to make guys miss or run through tackles.

ML will have a blast using his skills to open up runs and passes for AJ and DA. He's not a gadget player, he's an offensive threat that DCs will have to account for.

Illusion of complexity will be his contribution to Matt's O.

Oppy, Amari Rodgers is plenty fast for jet sweeps. His 4.44 is faster than Deebo Samuel's 4.48.

AmRod is insanely elusive, runs like a RB and is perfect for all the jet concepts in LaFleur's O. Personally, I think AmRod is very advanced, and should be able to step into a starting role as a rookie WR. Wouldn't surprise me if he wins the #2 this TC with Jordan Love at QB. All new relationships are being built anyway if AR is traded. AmRod being a coaches son will have little to no problem understanding MLF's playbook, and he's a great route runner.

I think he'll be a fine WR lining up on the LOS and running routes.
I don't think I want to see him running sideline to sideline behind the LOS after the snap of the ball trying to get the edge.

I’m going to be watching Gaither. I think he may surprise with his readiness despite being a small school player, and ability to move inside and out. I think he will contest the last slot (s). He can also return kicks. Let’s hope they all stay healthy and enjoy the competition.

Sign me up for both Reggie Begelton & Bailey Gaither!!! EASY!!!!

I think we'll be seeing a lot that is different with this final roster, and who lands positions for 2021. Both players can and have run jet concepts, along with Amari Rodgers. Being three deep there would be smart for this team, not to mention all 3 are returners.

Begelton had 9.5 ypc rushing, 21.7 yd avg on KR.

Gaither had 7.8 ypc rushing, 18.9 yd avg on KR.

Rodgers had 7.7 ypc rushing, 7.8 yd avg on PR and 29.0 on KR.

It wouldn't shock me to see these 5 WR make this roster:
Adams
Lazard
Rodgers
Begelton
Gaither

I bet they keep 6 this year though (MVS), and I wonder if DEN tries to pull Lazard away from us for Jerry Jeudy - which is entirely possible in closing out a trade deal. DEN may prefer parting with multiple players over higher number of picks. What if they offer Surtain II, Chubb & Jeudy plus 2 R1s? For AR & Lazard?

Not for Diva. They are not stupid. It is very unlikely that Packers will get for Aaron Rodgers what you all believe he is worth. Be realistic.

Hey croat, have you seen the trade proposals being bashed around? I actually thought this return might be low, considering that...

I wouldn’t doubt if the Packers could easily get Surtain ll, Chubb and 3 R1s plus an R2 for AR alone. I’ve seen four R1s as mentioned by Dan Orlovsky. I’m not sitting here dreaming this shit up. These proposals are being discussed out there.

And, I agree the real price will most likely be lesser than the hype.

Was thinking with Jeudy being a #15 pick, maybe take one less R1 and give them Lazard so Aaron has a WR he knows. Guessing there might be value there for DEN.

This is looking like maybe the best overall team GB has fielded in the AR era and instead of leading the charge, our 'field general' is busy blowing up every bridge he can find.

Go figure.

This is a good collective group:

An Elite #1 WR Adams

A big sure handed, great blocking possession guy who has a knack for converting 3rd downs Lazard

A true “take the top off the defense “ speed guy MVS

A big physical almost TE size guy in Funchess

A 211 pound slot/Jet sweep kid who can also return punts in Rodgers

And a 6’5” smooth a silk speed guy in EQ who has shown enough to at least compete for the #4 or #5 spot

What’s not to like about this group that was part of the #1 offense in the NFL?

As long as #12 is the one throwing the ball that is....

We have a good WR group now..................but it might look very different in a year if Adams is unaffordable for the Packers (any new deal will cost rather more than $20m pa).

I had the Packers round 1 pick of the 2022 draft as a DL (most likely), or ILB (unlikely but possible). Taking into account possible player losses, like Preston Smith and D.Adams, a pass rusher or more to the point of this post, a no.1 WR, become good options.

Just saw a trade scenario presented by Evan Siegel that includes Aaron Rodgers AND Davante Adams for 6 draft picks and 5 players.

Three R1s, one R2, two R3s and one R4 along with CB Patrick Surtain ll, WR Jerry Jeudy, WR KJ Hamler, OG/OT Dalton Risner and QB Drew Lock... this is starting to get wild. I don’t want to give up both Aaron & Davante. Best QB and best WR in the NFL, for that? No way.

Am I not seeing this clearly? They can throw Chubb in there and keep Lock, and make it 4 R1s.

I don’t think we need them. Just shared the trade proposal. There has been talk here too of packaging Aaron & Davante. Personally, I don’t dig that, because I don’t want to lose Davante too. AR is enough.

Curious how big the drive will be to join AR with both Davante & Lazard, or, are they in the Love camp? Interesting how that might work out.

Jeudy, I think his really low production numbers could be from poor QB play. Lock threw the most picks in the NFL last year.

Davante on last year of his deal? Love can’t simply be a game manager through most of 2021 as he gains experience? Nate? They are trading AR. What are our options but to support Jordan Love? As a Packer fan?

Seems reasonable to me. Please, tell me how confident you were in 2010 after we lost to Detroit. FFS.

GG,
I have been suggesting packaging Adam's with Rodger's for several weeks now to be able to fleece a team like Denver. If Gutey could get what was proposed he better run all the way to Denver to consummate the deal. However, it sounds fantasy to me as Denver would be gutted.

Let's face it if Rodger's is traded Adam's value drops precipitously. He only has at best 2 more seasons in his prime. With Rodger's at QB he normally gets like 10 or 12 targets a game. If Love is at QB he 'might' get half those targets. I don't see any reason to keep him, particularly with the King's ransom you outlined. Jeudy and Hammler as young WR'S in return....hmmmm...JUST DO IT AND HAVE IT READY TO GO ONE MINUTE AFTER MIDNIGHT ON JUNE 1st.

Yeah. I know what you're saying, but I wonder if Davante wouldn't be a godsend to a young QB like Jordan Love. He knows the offense inside and out. He's quite possibly the best WR in the NFL. Why trade him away? He might even want to stay in GB, and if we trade AR, we ought to be able to extend him no problem.

Let's put it this way, I'd rather have Davante than Jeudy. We can draft another top WR next year, but we are essentially built for a legit Super Bowl run this year. Removing Davante from the 2021 equation would hinder those efforts greatly.

Figure, if all we need is a good running game, an improved D and STs, and a QB who doesn't have to be a world beater, but rather, a serviceable game manager who can make some quality throws here and there...

Players are where it is at, more than scheme. Davante is one of the best around. I don't want to give him to DEN, even if it means we only have him for this one year. He might wish to stay, depending on how things go with Love at QB. Paired with Amari in the slot? Could be really good.

gg, if we trade Adams with AR we can get a return for him. If we trade AR we probably lose Adams to FA after this season and get nothing in return. Davante wants targets and receptions. If Love is a game manager that means less receptions for him and probably for all of the WRs.

AR is Davante's money maker. Anything can happen but he is very likely to want to follow AR. If we include him in a deal with AR we get a return and free up even more cap space. I don't like it either but that's where we are.

I thought that the point of this season was to keep the band together. If we trade AR we've already broken up the band so we may as well get returns and free up cap space. Put a new band together. Thanks, Since '61

Make no mistake. I want nothing but more Lombardi Trophies to be won by the Packers.

I'd rather have a QB who listens to his HC, runs the rushing plays that are called when they are called by his HC, and gets the job done, instead of pass happy, don the Superman cape BS in yet another losing effort.

Personally, I think Jordan Love can pull this off and win us another, possibly easier than AR could, because AR is AR... and he has to be the passingest MF on the planet.

When you pass, and it is incomplete, the clock... it stops...

Favre did a lot of that shit too. Both players are without a doubt phenomenal passers, but, c'mon! Win the goddam game. How many NFCC games have we left out there in almost 30 years?

FYI, we've lost 12 divisional round or wildcard games, 6 NFCC games and 1 Super Bowl in that span. We also won 2 Super Bowls during that stretch of Favre-Rodgers.

Last two NFCC games:

16 carries for our RBs combined. LOSS.
16 carries for our RBs combined. LOSS.

I’d argue had Aaron Jones & Jamaal Williams had 16 carries -each- in those two games, we win them both, and possibly another Lombardi Trophy or two. The conversation today would be different, wouldn’t it?

We've been knocked out of advancing in the playoffs 8 times since winning it all in the 2010 season.

RUN THE ROCK!!!!

I'm actually of the mind that if Love takes the helm, everyone not named Adams will get more targets, and Adams will still get more than everyone else- just not 25%+ like he's accustomed to.

GG,
I understand your thought process but I think Since61 does a good job explaining.

Without question Adam's if he is with the Packers in 2021 and Rodgers is gone he is going to get significantly less opportunities with Love. LF will be more into the game management with Love at the helm. Lot's of running and lots of check downs. Amari will probably have the highest # of receptions along with Tonyan.

If a betting man I'd say Rodger's is going to copy cat Brady and have players be recruited and follow him anyway like Adams. Adam's absolutely knows Rodger's is his ticket to continued stardom and possibly to the Hall of Fame. If I was in a position to do so I'd guarantee Adam's will not resign with GB if Rodger's leave. Therefore, why wouldn't we want to trade Adams this year and get a King's ransom for him?

Separately, every time Adam's missed games the Packers won without him. They spread the ball around more making it tougher for the defense to stop our offense. As I have mentioned previously....it wasn't until Sharpe was injured that it forced Favre to become a better QB by spreading the ball around. Adam's value this year without Rodger's (if that happens) will be so significantly less than what we are used to seeing him do in the past. Would the ROI make sense if he is only catching 4-5 passes a game and for significantly less yards? Personally, I do not think so and if we could end up with some of the talented young WR's from Denver that would grow with Love it would be a win-win situation in Green Bay. Then instead of using one of the 1st round draft choices on a WR next year (that takes a couple years to develop) I'd take a big old nasty DL, or a knock the snot out of you OT, or possibly a Devon White type ILB because we would be set at WR for many years, particularly if MVS and possibly ESB are re-signed.

Just my thoughts!

That assumes Davante Adams is ready to hitch his trailer on the AR train. What if he's not? What if Lazard is not? I mean, there is a real possibility these WRs have seen what Love can do, and that they might want to stick with the Packers instead of following AR to DEN.

That's my thinking... and, we won't know until we get a little further into this.

It's possible because:
1. Jordan Love can throw the dimes.
2. GB will have more cap room to make better offers to these WRs who know LaFleur's system.
3. GB might be better set up to win the Super Bowl - for a number of years - if they stay to play with Love.
4. These guys want to win, and they want the big payday. Both are possible over a longer term in GB.

*You don't think they've seen diminished arm strength on the long ball? Hell, they ran the routes...

AR can still sling it with the best of them, but, we've watched him every week for his entire career, under a microscope. Your eyes know.

FWIW, I re-watched last season and MVS dropped 6 by my count (7 according to offical stats = 11%). Those 6 would have been about 130-140 yards, 3 maybe 4 first downs, and 1 TD. All but one drop was important, 3 or 4 of them would've really impacted the games.

IMHO, though, what bothers me about MVS is how he still goes for almost every ball with a basket catch. He's not learned the importance of high pointing a ball, of fighting for it as if the DB is trying to steal his little sister's lunch money. Or he's just not capable of doing it. He's no Devante, but look how Devante has grown over the years from 'promising talent' to #1 in the league. If MVS could've just grown from #3 on the list to #2, that would've been really helpful to the team. I just don't see any reason to think he'll make a jump now.

I, for one, really appreciate your sharing this info, jont.

Kinda confirms what I recall. I wouldn't give up on MVS because we know he's working on it, and development isn't always a straight line.

However, that dude has his work cut out for him. No question. There are those development steps, and he went to 50 something as a rookie, to 40 something year 2, then to 50 something in year 3, and he's still under what Davante Adams had in his worst season for Catch%.

Plus, there's more competition on the roster.

That is just not good trending. Doesn't matter how much you like the guy, and I do... Maybe the numbers finally go the right way with Jordan Love throwing to him.

I think about that pressure to get on AR's good side, and what that must have been like for our WRs. Maybe a bunch of them get a real chance and explode with Love at QB1.

Jont,
I dont disagree about MVS with how he catches the ball and the drops. However, his development from year one to year three has been significant. His play in the NFC Championship game was outstanding. The guy is still developing. Frustrating yes but boy does he have amazing potential.

They are both talented and really are the assets of the team. I really enjoyed watching that match. But, when they will continue the matches? I think there are matches that they haven't held yet, right? I really miss watching this kind of sport. I am bored watching their recorded matches. Not like in the NBA they are already allowed to play and they only have to stay or have to lockdown in their bootcamp. But anyways, I hope football will continue.
