Packers 24 Panthers 16: Game Balls and Lame Calls

Of course it wasn't going to be easy.

You are a Packers fan.   You watch this team every week.   You saw Green Bay dominate the 4-9 Carolina Panthers to the tune of 21 to 3 in the first half.

You weren't fooled for a moment, were you?   You did not, could not relax.   You've seen this game before.   Over and over.

The Packers simply cannot stand prosperity.   After walking through Carolina for scores on their first three possessions, somebody, somewhere turned off the switch.   The Panthers made adjustments.   The receivers couldn't get open.   Aaron Rodgers held the ball.   He took sacks on third down.   The running game no longer worked.   Offense was gone.   Up to the defense to hold on to the game.....always an adventure.

Considering the offense punted the ball six times in a row, putting the defense on the field for nearly the entire second half, Green Bay's defenders played pretty darn well.   As is their custom, they did a lot of bending, but they also made a string of very big plays at critical times.   The secondary was especially clutch, breaking up several passes and forcing Carolina to be very patient, which they were.   The Panthers had to run 16 plays and then settle for a field goal in the 4th quarter to make it a one score game at 21-13.   This was the closest the D has come to putting together a complete game.   The same cannot be said for the offense, which got on the bus and left the stadium with about two minutes to play in the first half.

This roller coaster inconsistency drives you mad, but the formula continues to result in victories.   Now at 11-3, the Pack is a step closer to the top seed in the NFC.   But certainly they can't get away with this act when Tennessee rolls into town next week.

GAME BALLS

Adrian Amos

Without question his best game as a Packer.   He was all over the field, knocking down passes and making sure tackles.   In the first quarter he stuffed a pass in the flat for no gain.   In the second quarter he made a diving knockdown, then two plays later acrobatically lunged in to deflect a ball away with his left arm.   In quarter three he stoned  quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for no gain on a scramble.   In the 4th quarter he played a pass in the end zone beautifully to knock it away from Robbie Anderson.    This game is his highlight reel.   Let's hope it's a trend.

Krys Barnes

Besides turning in generally solid work covering over the middle, the undrafted free agent made two huge plays.    With Carolina on the GB one yard line, Bridgewater tried to leap the ball over the goal line.   Barnes met him head on and knocked his arm to jar the ball loose, where it was picked up and returned 52 yards by Kevin King.   In the third quarter, Barnes blew up a screen to Mike Davis.   It's going to be increasingly hard to keep this guy off the field if he can stay healthy.

Aaron Jones

He was the first half hammer for the Packers, rushing for 114 yards and a score before intermission.   He continued to run hard in the second half, but just didn't get much help as Green Bay's offense just couldn't convert on third down.

Mason Crosby

He was all set to kick a 37 yard chip shot to put the game out of reach in the closing minutes, when Aaron Rodgers failed to get rid of the ball and took a 14 yard sack.   No worries.   Crosby calmly scorched a 51 yarder through the uprights.   Now you know why the very first thing the front office took care of last offseason was to re-sign Crosby to a 3 year, $12.9 million dollar contract in February.   When the game is in the balance, I want this guy on my team.

Honorable Mentions

Dean Lowry and Kingsley Keke put a lot of pressure on Bridgewater all night.   The Smith Brothers each had a sack.   Jaire Alexander was all over D.J. Moore to stop a third down conversion in the second quarter, and covered him like a blanket on an end zone route in quarter three.   Allen Lazard had a nice night, with 5 catches for a team high 56 yards, including a clutch third down conversion for 22 yards that set up the final field goal.

LAME CALLS

Constant Horizontal Throws to Davante

They're not working anymore.   Opponents have obviously seen the play on film and they are all over it.   And Davante is taking a terrible beating as defensive backs with a running start tee off on him as he makes the catch.

SHORT YARDAGE

•  Was I the only one who lost his breath in the second quarter when Aaron Rodgers was pulled down from behind on the sideline and his legs buckled awkwardly underneath him?   Fortunately he got up only a bit gingerly and walked back to the huddle.

•  With Jamaal Williams going out early with an injury, A.J Dillon got in for one series, carried the ball once for 19 yards, and then disappeared.   Sure would like to see more of him down the stretch.

•  After having six catches last week, Marquez Valdes-Scantling had but one target in this game, and no receptions.   Either he wasn't getting open or he wasn't in the game plan.   If he's on your fantasy team he's probably driving you crazy.

•  Mason Crosby has hit 16 field goal tries without a miss.   But he has missed two extra points.   Go figure.

•  It may not make you feel better, but Carolina plays everybody like this.   They lost to the defending champion Chiefs by two points.   In fact,  the Panthers have lost 9 games by a one possession score.

•  Favorite snapshot of the game:   The fan holding up the sign wishing happy birthday to the late, great Reggie White.

THEY SAID IT

Adrian Amos (on the defense):   "I just think we are improving each and every week.   Everybody's looking at themselves and saying how we can be better.   Me personally, I'm just trying to be faster to the ball and be more effective."

Mason Crosby:   "I just feel as though my rhythm and my timing is on and I trust the operation and the protection, and those guys out in front of me and I'm able to go out there and execute at a high level."

Aaron Jones:   "Normally it always comes down to a one possession game.   Whenever we come into that situation I just turn to my coaches and say 'hey, I told you we'd be here', and that's when it's time to go execute.....we made it count when we needed it."

Matt LaFleur:   "Any time you hold a team in this league to 16 points, that's pretty darn good, so, we're happy with that.   A lot to clean up, a lot to improve upon, so we're going to turn our focus now to the Tennessee Titans".

Wasnt that Dafney #49 that the Panther guy blew by to almost get to that punt. I dont know who when where or why but ST definitely need to look at all situations and why is a back up out there on the edge in only his 3rd game with the Pack?? There is definitely room for improvement in the whole philosphy of the STeams.

Defense is improving...are you serious? Based on what, one game against an inferior offense. Did you watch last weeks game? How about that great tackling that allowed the last Carolina score?

Carolina defense allows an average of 25.4 points per game.
The Packers' offense scored 24, 1.4 points worse than the average score vs. Carolina in 2020.

Carolina offense puts up an average of 23.1 points per game.
The Packers' defense allowed a total of 16 points, holding Carolina to 7.1 points less than they've averaged per game in 2020.

Packers offense in the second half punted 5 times in a row, with a number of 3 and outs, leaving the defense on the field far too long.

The defense still held the Panthers under their average PPG by more than a TD.

Is the defense great? No, but then, nobody is claiming they are.
Has the defense played better the last few weeks? Yes.

I'm seriously asking you- have you paid attention to how much scoring occurs in the NFL over the last decade? Holding an opponent to 16 points in the NFL is a win for a defense.

By the way, the only other team that has held Carolina to 16 points in 2020 was the Bears.

It's a small step forward for the defense, but it's a step forward.

Much as I am an advocate for removing Pettine, that was the Ds best performance overall, despite being on the field almost constantly in the second half. That doesn’t mean they are a great D, but the D paid the offense back some of what it has owed over the course of this season yesterday.

This is the last time that I’m going to try to talk sense to you, edp, and then I’m going to put you on the “never read because they’re stupid” list.

1. The Packer defense is a better than average defense. That’s a fact that’s available to anybody who wants to look it up. They currently are 15th in scoring, 8th in yards.

2. At home....which is where we’ll be in the playoffs.....we’ve held 5 of 7 opponents to 21 or less. The Bears made it to 24 with some garbage time points. Minnesota scored 28. We’ve surrendered 142 points in seven home games, including two punt returns. That’s 20.2 points per game. If you take away the two punt returns, our defense is averaging 18.2 points allowed per game. How this supports your broken record narrative of a bad defense is a mystery to me.

3. Tampa Bay scored 38, 14 of them off turnovers. Indianapolis scored 34 with the help of 4 turnovers. Minnesota scored 34, 24 of them in the 4th quarter while we played some backups in the secondary to give them a little experience since we had no preseason.

That’s it. IMO, you have to be pretty obtuse to look at the facts and continue to bleat “ baaaadd defense”. It’s not a bad defense; you’re just a bad fan.

That's todays NFL, offense has a big advantage over D. All teams give up big leads. So what may seem like a bad Packer D is actually not that bad.

Packers defense is not bad, but it's not that good, either.

The bottom line is the Packers have so much cap wrapped up on the offensive side of the ball, it is unlikely the defense will be much better than average in the foreseeable future.

I think it is safe to say that the Packers core team building philosophy for the last 15 years has been that you build around offense because the league rules favor it and defense is automatically at a disadvantage. You hope that you catch lightening in a bottle in a few defensive draft picks that outplay their rookie contracts by a wide margin, and the defense gets that boost before we eventually end up having to part ways due to cap limitations. I think the Packers need to start shifting focus to defense to prepare for the future anyways. Clark, Alexander, Gary, maybe Savage if he continues to grow would be good, young players to build around.

I would also give some props to the D-line as they were stout most of the game against the run and were able to keep Martin and Barnes clean to penetrate and pursue. How often have we been able to say that the last few years? The combination of Keke starting and Lancaster giving Clark a breather at NT along with Barnes and Martin at ILB give me some hope against Derrick Henry next week.

I totally agree about the lateral passing game its been on tape for a while and no longer works. Running Jones way too much. If Dillon is not practicing much he cant play even though healthy. Last, its ok for the d backs to play when said d back have closing speed. Ours dont. By the time they cover the distance needed the receiver has already caught the ball and is heading up field. Poor drafting.

Jaire and Savage have outstanding closing speed. King ran 4.43 at the combine, tho admittedly he certainly didn't on the fumble return. Maybe the groin hasn't fully healed to allow him to run full speed, IDK. But either way he's a far better option than Josh Jackson Amos doesn't have great speed by any means but he's playing very good football. If your complaining about backups, that's usually the reason they are backups!

Game ball to the first half defense lead by Amos and Barnes in the first half. Martin played well but out of control a bit, over running plays in the backfield. Also to the Special Teams coverage improvements. First half offensive play calling with deep safeties opening up the run game. Crosby!
Lame calls to the second half adjustments that put Kirksey on the field. Also to the NFL network and poor reporting. Either I missed it or it wasn't reported that Williams was injured. Was Big Dog injured putting Dafney in his roll on the field? Too many dropped passes that hit receivers in the hands, not fingertips. The second half conservative offense that seemed to try to protect a lead and resulted in guards on their backs or looking down at Rodgers on his.

Im fine with Martin pulling the trigger like that and making overly aggressive mistakes. If he makes even half those plays (and he does) then thats already more effective than any ILB weve had since 2010. Martin and Barnes should be on the field for every snap against Tennessee. Get these kids 2 more games of experience together heading into the playoffs. They are the future and the future is now. (at ILB at least def not QB)

One thing that was weird is that AR didn't take hardly any shot plays. One came on the free play in which MVS drew the PI penalty. The other was on a weird play when AR threw deep to MVS who was blanket-covered and had no chance. It didn't seem like AR was running out of time so no idea what that was about. I never saw Tonyan go downfield or down the seam. Just looked and felt odd to me.

It's difficult to see on TV what the defense was doing , but my guess would be a cover two adjustment. I' ve seen that hazy look on Favre and Rogers before when faced against that defense. Gave up on the run too early.

Carolina was playing a lot of 6 DB sets and daring the Packers to run the ball. The Packers took them up on it in the first half, but not the second. When teams jam up the Packers WRs and get push from the front four, the offense struggles.

Completely agree. And what's worse is all the lateral passes which clearly weren't working but were still being called regularly.

Adams was doubled all game and our collection of #3 (at best) and #4 WR didn't get it done, even with only single coverage since Adams was always doubled. Teams are now going to take Adams away and make us win with MVS Lazard et al. That doesn't bode well.

this reminded me of the game vs Washington last year on Dec 8. Pretty poor performance against a team everyone thought we would pummel. I recall having the same disgust during that 20 -15 win. We won the rest of the regular season, so...... I took some antacid and went to bed and feel better about it this morning. Don't know if home field is going to be much of an advantage this year.

What was Barnes injury?? Why was he missing almost the entire 2nd half. TOTALLY different defense with Martin and Barnes in. That first half was hands down the most fun ive had watching a Packers defense since 2014. They are our only chance at getting Henry to ground before he gets goin. Kirksey cant do it. Hes the weak link when hes in. And its clear as day

Eye injury in 3rd quarter. In partial defense of what came after, I think the D looked to be getting gassed in the 4th. Hardly surprising given the time in the field. The D was not a culprit yesterday.

No problems here with the overall play of the D, besides Kirksey. Kirksey is like a statue trying to change direction. If Barnes didnt have to come out Im willing to bet that Bridgewater doesnt walk into the endzone, like he did past Kirksey.

Lazard did not have a good night. He looks rusty. Terrible drop that killed the drive before half time.

LaFleur had a worse night. He has a pattern in games where Rodgers is pressured of going into a bunker from a play calling perspective. This was the 49ers last year, Tampa, Colts and Vikings second game again. Same failure to change things up and sane reversion to a minimalist conservative play set and abandonment of the run. He simply can’t adjust and seems unable to punch back tactically in game. If his plans are stymied he’s starting to look like he can not change. More worryingly, he seems to have no answer to pressure after a year or more.

Agree CW. MLF is lousy at halftime or in-game adjustments which is odd for an otherwise very creative offensive mind. What is worse is that he is not correcting that behavior or getting help from other coaches on the staff to improve the in-game adjustments. That should be a major part of the Packers off-season self study because this will doom MLF as a head coach if he can not adjust.

Again he is 24-6, he must be doing something g right.
Besides, teams don’t control who they play or when they them or what their records are.

Teams can only control whether or not they win their games. In the 3 games the Packers have lost this season the Packers beat themselves with turnovers and penalties in 2 of the losses. Against Tampa they were outplayed by the Bucs on both sides of the ball after the 1st quarter. That happens. Sometimes you need to give credit to your opponent.

Hopefully, the Packers have 5 games left. 2 in the regular and 3 post-season. If they have a 21-3 lead at halftime in each of those games and go on to win each game 24-16, I would sign up for that right now. Thanks, Since ‘61

There you go burying your head in the sand again. LaFleur is doing very well, but that is an obvious issue. His team doesn't adjust well and they don't recover from poor starts either. Those are the from the very same problem . Yes, he has a great record, but make no mistake that is a BIG problem which if not corrected will prevent another Lombardi Trophy.

Bury your head at your own peril.

Since '61 is a great commentator but his statements this time are more rah rah then acknowledging an obvious problem. It is difficult to coach a team up to a level of being good to great and consistently beating teams who are your equal. He's done that and convinced a HOF QB who was getting grumpy to buy into the system. All in all an excellent job. But no one is perfect and the goal should always be the Lombardi trophy. The lack of commitment to the run game and adjustments against teams with strong front four's is a glaring issue that he needs to be worked on.

Maybe I'm missing something as far as the defense being said to have a good game.
It seems our defense still gave up long drives by not making stops on third downs.
It seems our defense still is likely to be in big trouble against playoff teams.

Coldworld, did you think the tackling was better overall; that the players were organized better as far as their assignments; and that there was a better mix of differing looks on defense including blitzes?
I sincerely asking because I have a high regard for your comments; and I'm glad to get thoughts from others, too.
I'm still struggling with the defense seeming to almost always find a way to give up third down conversions to a new set of downs for the opposing offense. Any help there to alleviate my concerns would be appreciated.

Well, 13TimeChamps, I was wrong about the third downs, and you get a thumbs up from me.
It still seems the defense was giving up long drives, though.
The Panthers were near the end zone twice in this game and wound up with only 3 points -- because of a fumble lost in the first half and a holding penalty in the second half.
As Taryn has pointed out, if the Panthers had McCaffrey they would have had a much better chance in those two drives of coming away with 14 points.
In defense of our defense, they do seem to be resilient at times in minimizing the damage after giving up long drives.
However, I don't know if they'll be as good in that resiliency against better teams in the playoffs.
I just can't shake the feeling that the decent statistics for the defense may be deceiving us from seeing that the defense continues to be really shaky.
What I hope is that the defense is getting better along the way, and can rise to the occasion in time for the playoffs. That seems iffy, though.
In any case, I'm truly glad for other fans to provide other perspectives.
This is one of those times when I would be glad to be wrong.

The defense forced a turnover and a penalty to end red zone opportunities? Isn't that what good defenses do?

I will say the overall defensive stats are helped by the usually prolific offense, but not this game. It's a good defense, not yet great. You can certainly make a case they aren't in the "very good" category either but certainly good.

Question is whether its good enough to bring home Lombardi's Trophy?

Against playoff teams;

New Orleans scored 30, below their home average.
Tampa’s offense scored 24 on the defense, below their home average.
Indianapolis scored 34 with the help of four turnovers.

All on the road.

Here’s the deal: If the league’s #1 offense can score 30 at home, and doesn’t have multiple turnovers, we’re going to win.

Game balls to Crosby,Amos,and Jones.
Lame call - is it just a coincidence or does it seem like whenever a player on defense makes a play or does well, they are immediately replaced? Play calling in 2nd half is the definition of lame.
One more note- I don’t think the defense are world batters, but they don’t such as much now as they used to. Packers have to make better halftime adjustments

I’d run the play only FAKE the lateral and let Adams fly down sideline. If defenses are jumping the lateral - maybe they will be out of position. (Of course this doesn’t replace the need to properly go through progressions to see if better receiver options are available. Not sure AR did this too well last night)

The lateral throws for Davante should be thrown out of the playbook. On at least two occasions I can remember Rodgers tossed to Adams there were ZERO blockers assigned to the formation. It was poorly designed to say the least.

They need to use that play as a decoy to throw or pitch out to the other side of the field. Defenses are anticipating and jumping on this. Could be that this is the Packers putting this on film and expecting to play off it later.

"Constant Horizontal Throws to Davante"

^^^ This ^^^^

That play has become so predictable that a half drunk fan sitting on his couch (me) can identify it when he sees a bunch formation with Davante slightly off the LOS. Especially on 3rd and 3-6 (ish). Its maddening and so unbelievably predictable. Stop it. Doesn't work. Only allows opposing D's to tee off on GB's #1 WR.

There's going to be a wide-open deep TD shot to Davante Adams streaking down the sideline next week.

It will come off of a play designed to show run (hopefully drawing up the safety a bit), with Adams looking at the QB from the LOS while the DB shows off coverage. Rodgers will immediately pump fake to Davante as though it's that quick hitter he usually takes when the DB gives a big cushion to Davante on the perimeter. Adams will work his footwork magic and play matador to the incoming DB attempting to Tee off on him, and sprint past him down the sideline for the reception.

That is the usual action generated by the safety help over the top of Adams; My prediction is predicated purely by the success Carolina had smothering Adams' lateral pass receptions at the LOS. It's the kind of thing this offense likes to exploit- show something on film, show the same look, but hit the defense with a variant to surprise them.

This game he didn't get safety help, he simply was double teamed all game. From the time he left the tunnel to the time he left the field. And my guess is it will be the norm for the remaining games. Jones wasn't getting big runs in the second half , but he was grinding out 3-4 yds , so give it to him again and setup a third and short situation. Too many pass plays allows the D to just tee off on the QB.

Give it to Dillon. Have Jones and Dillon on the field together, we weren’t throwing to receivers beyond 5 yards, 2 back sets would have been appropriate. Even get Daffney in to lead block or leak out.

Couldn't agree more. They gave Dillon his one carry for a big gain, then put him back next to the elf.

Dafney looked lost out there. He couldn't find guys to block and when he did, he was soft. It feels like he's on the roster for his player type, but not for his play. Is there a true FB on the PS?

In the analysis later, it was pointed out that AR needed to take one of those late sacks (where Brian Burns got hurt) to keep the clock churning rather than stopping the clock with a throwaway. It made sense in retrospect.

Thing is, Packers almost blew it with a near block on Scott's punt. This team is milliseconds away from disaster on STs.

Carolina's interior DL had their numbers, and they weren't afraid to jam the A gaps in the second half with an extra rusher or two. They played mostly 6 DBs behind it. This is what SF and SD did to the Packers last year, and Tampa and Minnesota did this year.

Game balls: The first offensive drive was a thing of beauty; Amos and the rest of the secondary with some of those athletic pass breakups; Barnes; I thought the defense played with a lot energy most of the game; Scott: a solid good punt at the end of the game from deep in our own end--very helpful.

Lame calls: The last two plays of our last offensive series: the second down rushing attempt couldn't have been any more predictable, and then, did no one see Burns on the following play? Also, as has happened a couple times previously, this offense can't seem to get up off the mat when adversity strikes; MLF must recognize the problem and come up with solutions the next time around.

Overall, I was pleased that our defense kept us hanging in there and was able to close the deal.

I'll agree with you on the play calling seemingly focused on Rodgers MVP status after we got up 21-3. Lafluer kind of alluded to it in his press conference without saying it exactly. On the other stuff I can't agree with you. People are going to have their opinions based on their observations but they only express them because they have a love for this team. We aren't all going to agree on who had a bad game and that's fine, but we all can agree that most of us have a genuine affinity for this team.

@Since61, usually I agree with your thinking but listing Rodgers under Game Ball? Sorry no, no, no, he stunk last night and lost himself the MVP award. I would put Josh Allen and Mahomes ahead of him now.

In post game press conference MLF implied that Rodgers was changing the plays in the 2nd half and switching from running plays (which had been working) to those awful passing plays which almost saw Adams get killed.

On top of that Rodgers went back to his 2018 self, holding the ball too long and taking very poorly timed sacks. Yes some of that was poor OL pass blocking for sure, but some of it was on Rodgers.

Overall that was one of his worst outings of the season (though not anywhere near as bad as his Tampa game).

Nitschke Fan - I gave Rodgers a game ball because he was 20 out of 29 and ran for a TD and threw for another. But more importantly he did not commit any turnovers and took sacks rather than making bad decisions with the football and possibly costing his team the game.

Playing smart does not show up in the final score or the stat sheets. But a mistake by Rodgers during the 2nd half could have resulted in a loss.

QB play is often the result of OL play. 5 sacks tells me that our OL was not very effective in protecting our QB. I don’t know why MLF did not call more rollouts for Rodgers. I also would have used Dillon in the ground game during the 2nd half. Some credit goes to the Panthers for their defensive adjustments.

Nothing was working in the 2nd half but Rodgers didn’t force anything that would give his opponent a short field. That plus the Packers defense was the determining factor in the 2nd half. I’m Ok that you don’t agree but that’s my reasoning for the Rodgers game ball. Thanks, Since ‘61

The problem with playing Dillon is that he apparently is clueless in pass protection. He was poor at it in training camp despite having great size. I am sure the coaches are working on this aspect of his game. I haven't seen his pass catching but the coaches said his hands were fine, so just the routes probably. Surely he can run into the flat at least.

So what - put him in on these obvious run plays ie 3rd and 1 and give it to him - especially early in the games ie not the 4th quarter - we know that our Ollne gets pushed back 1 yard on these plays but maybe he will bulldoze somebody - no bootleg or pass plays when he is in just give him the ball. Jones and Williams have been stopped so many times - it is time to give Dillon a chance.

When Williams went down and Jones already having a heavy workload, it was the perfect time to get him some snaps. And given they were ahead comfortably the onky thing they needed him to do is run the ball. It was a chance to just pummel Carolina with a sledge hammer. I get he needs to know blocking assignments, but they didn't need him to block in this game. They neede him running the ball. IMO it was a missed opportunity.

More than a feeling....we've seen this before; any adjustments seem to be pretty minimal.. The offense has its staple of favorite plays, and when they cease to be effective, there doesn't seem to be a Plan B, at least one that temporarily throws the defense off-balance and gets us out of the funk.

Game ball: Amos, Barnes, Jones, Crosby

Lame: Patrick overmatched and not replacing him. Not using Dillon more often....AGAIN.

Kudos to Defense outplaying Panthers Offense. I have seen an awful lot of half games by our offense. This looks like a full game for the "D". I saw a lot of balls tipped out of WR's hands and good heads up plays by our young ILB's. I also like the DL in 4-5 man fronts and 2-ILB sets. The Panthers play everyone pretty hard especially when it's left close. There is a lot of plus things our Defense will be able to take away from this game including playing tough in the red zone. ML needs to stay with the run and if it takes getting Dillon involved so be it. I think since Patrick was getting steam rolled Rodgers was all jittery like the Bucs game and ML failed to call plays to get the offense going again. We have been here before. I hope he figures it out soon.

Just wonder what happened to our motion on offense. The second half was looking like an MM offense in which we just line up and “ win your one on ones” , how does that put the defense on their heels? We ran the ball so well in the first half but seemed intent on throwing passes around the line of scrimmage in the second. At times Rodgers seems to only look Adams way which isn’t taking what the defense gives you. But the Chiefs and Saints just verily beat the Panthers so they are an ascending team who play hard and are well coached so I’m just happy for the win.

Barnes was really, really good until he sustained the eye injury. It seems like the point when he went out the defense wasn't as good.

The Packers had a plan, and they executed it brilliantly!

- Start out fast and put up big points - 21 - while holding the Panthers to 3
- Move into vanilla offense mode - do not put much on tape that stronger opponents can use. Pre-snap motion all but disappeared. Play of the day was "lateral pass to Adams"
- Defense showed up and kept the Panthers in check. Remember, they gave up just 16 points. And no garbage time points either, which some critics were very harsh about.
- When Panthers came close, offense showed their hand just enough to win comfortably.

When the Packers blast the better opponents, critics will understand why Matt Lafleur did what he did. If the Packers had not taken their foot off the gas, yes, they would have put up big points; but then the defense would have allowed garbage points, and then we would have been even madder.

All-in-all, an excellent weekend for the Packers. All alone at 11-3.

I've noticed a trend. When ever Rodgers start's drinking the Kool aide he has a below average game. Made a statement, Para phrasing, My down year is better than a lot of other QB's career year, then laid an egg in Tampa. Then campaigning for MVP and plays way below his standard against the Panthers. This also negatively feeds the rest of the offense because they see their leader bragging and basking in the spot light and the probably relax a little. Rogers don't take the cheese and get caught in this trap any more, please you should know better.

Is home field advantage at Lambeau really that much of an advantage without a full house of fans making noise? It’ll be cold vs. playing in a dome, but it’s not like the majority of Packers grew up playing in these conditions. It seems like Rodgers and the receivers historically play better indoors anyway - like beating the Saints in their stadium while playing poorly on grass in Tampa or the terrible games at the 49ers last year. On top of that, the Packers have, over the past few years, played poorly after a bye week with no apparent help from the extra time off. They come out sloppy and unprepared.
The only advantage I can see is a pass through the first week of the playoffs and not having to travel. And let’s be truthful, they’re more likely to win that first game against a lesser team and stay sharp vs. getting soft (as they have done) during a bye and then playing in possible frigid temperatures outside. I know it sounds blasphemous, but I remember when Vick and the Falcons destroyed Favre at home in the playoffs, despite being a team from the south and playing in the snow with the Packers having never lost a home playoff game? Then, later, it was the Giants who won with a field goal in a freezing snow storm and went on to the Super Bowl. So... I don’t see the weather being some mystical advantage.

Here's a lame call- Everybody probably forgot it because we're so used to it. Third play of the game, GB has Carolina in third down. But the defense is already totally disorganized, and Uncle Fester is forced to call a timeout. I don't even remember what happened on the ensuing play, but c'mon, three plays into the game and you're already in panic mode?
