Will the Packers' punt protection improve in 2023?

It can only go up from here.

The special teams for the Green Bay Packers under head coach Matt LaFleur have been a sore spot, to put it lightly. Case in point, the Packers have never ranked in the top 20 in Rick Gosselin’s special teams rankings since LaFleur took over in 2019, finishing 26th in 2019, 29th in 2020, 32nd in 2021, and 22nd in 2022. (Gosselin has ranked all 32 units after each season based on various special teams categories for the past 40+ years.)

However, last season’s performance under special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia was filled with bright spots that could bode well for the future. The unit finished 17th in DVOA, the best ranking of LaFleur’s tenure, and improved in the areas of kickoff return coverage – 26th in 2021 to 21st in 2022 – and punt return coverage, going from worst to 21st. Moreover, the punt defense finished tied for 7th in pressure rate in 2022, tallying six pressures in 60 punts by their opponents, according to Next Gen Stats (via ESPN’s Seth Walder).

Best of all was the emergence of first-team All-Pro honoree Keisean Nixon, who led the league in kickoff return yards with 1,009 yards and was second in average yards per kickoff return (28.83 yards). Had he qualified with the requisite number of returns, he also would have led the league in average yards per punt return at 12.7 yards per return.

One area that must get cleaned up, though, is the unit’s punt protection. On 54 punt attempts, the unit allowed 11 pressures and two blocked punts, per Next Gen Stats (via Walder). The 20.4% pressure rate was tops in the NFL by 3.5 percentage points. To show how bad the Packers’ protection was in 2022 compared to the rest of the league, the difference between the Buffalo Bills, ranked 10th-worst, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ranked third-worst, was four percent. The punt protection unit's two blocked punts allowed were tied for the most allowed in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams.

The high pressure rate might be one of the reasons why punter Pat O’Donnell finished 31st, out of 36, in net yards per punt as he may have been affected by the walls closing in on him more than 20 percent of the time. Regardless, how can a unit be that bad at protecting the punter? Generally speaking, it is either due to missed assignments, which may include a protector not holding his block long enough or not chipping a defender properly, or at least one of the protectors simply getting beat. The pressure generated against a punter can rarely be attributed to the punter if he is rhythm unless he mishandles the snap.

For example, during the Packers’ Week 6 matchup against the New York Jets, the unit had five protectors at the line of scrimmage, three players behind them that somewhat formed a small triangle, and two gunners on the outside.

It is difficult to exactly ascertain the responsible Packers’ player, but the replay appears to show him engaging with defensive tackle Michael Clemons on the right side and then moving on to a different interior lineman to his left. That allowed a clear path for Clemons to block the punt, which was scooped up and returned for a touchdown to give the Jets a 17-3 lead. Was the aforementioned Green Bay player supposed to keep his block for longer, or was he supposed to get help from another protector? Either way, a costly miscue occurred.

The Packers brought in punter Daniel Whelan to compete with O’Donnell and signed long-snapper Matt Orzech, who they attempted to claim via the waiver wire in May 2021, to a three-year deal ($300k signing bonus) during the offseason.

Altogether, the team either signed or re-signed several players during the offseason strictly for special teams purposes. Who knows whether any of them will move the needle regarding punt protection, but something has to give for that area to improve in 2023.

I think they gave up a couple of blocked field goals too, didn't they? I seem to remember at least one.

Wendell Ferreira's Twitter post about punter Daniel Whelan is interesting. I'm increasingly thinking that he has a real shot to beat out Pat O'Donnell. In recent years, Green Bay has been the place where punters go to die. Even when our punters look good at the beginning of the season, they fade down the stretch, and I don't think it's due only to the colder weather.

I tend to judge punters by how they punt in a game vs. the opposing team's punter. Weather and field conditions are the same for both punters, so it's a pretty fair comparison, although of course game situations and field position must still be taken into account. When I'm watching a game, I'm always thinking: Are our punting team and punt return team winning the field position battle? I wish stats were kept about this.

There's little context for the Whelan/O'Donnell comparison given here aside from two guys, a vet who's well-established and a street FA, kicking in minicamp. O'Donnell's in-season numbers weren't great, but for punters who played the entire season, O'Donnell had among the lowest number of punts (52) and almost a 50% rate on his punts of dropping them inside the 20 (which drags down both hang time and net). I'd also like to know how many times O'Donnell kicked from inside his own 5 yd line (which usually means shortening step/approach and shorter kicks). Does Whelan hold on kicks? My recollection is that they brought in O'Donnell in part because he's a "plus" holder.

Don't get me wrong: let the best punter win, but as someone said above--unproven guys struggle over the course of a season in GB. It looks like replacing O'Donnell with a minimum contract guy like Whelan would net the Packers about $1M against the cap in 2023.

Whelan held for field goal attempts during minicamps. I couldn't find any info on previous experience as a holder or how well he did as a holder in the minicamps. The fact that Mason Crosby is gone works in his favor, as Crosby was picky about holders and may not have tolerated having another new one this year. By all accounts, Pat O'Donnell is a very good holder.

A couple things I learned about Whelan while trying to find info on him are that he is a native of Ireland (born in Dublin) and his name is pronounced WEE-lan.

I'd love an apples to apples comparison on these two punters; say 10 each with no pressure just to see who really generates more hang time and distance. With the rule change nothing else matters and I wonder if any team will have all their kicking duties done by one player as a result. Freeing up that one roster spot would be a real advantage.

A new LS might have helped and lessons learned about line protection. I got a feeling that the personal were the problem not so much the scheme.
Whelan does look pretty good right now. Let’s see how he does in the preseason and camp against other teams.

I am hoping they draft that Australian punter from the Iowa Hawkeyes, who is an All American. He is used to punting in cold weather and would be an immediate upgrade.

Nothing to do but have faith in Rich B; turning the ST unit around was never going to be as simple as kissing a frog and turning it into a prince.

The first Tweet is inaccurate; the Packers' Wilson did indeed block a punt that ended up netting 6 yards in the same Jets game.

It looks like it might have been McDuffie sliding too far over to the left and freeing up lane for Clemons in the Jets game. In the Vikings game, Leavitt allowed Mettelus (who also blocked a punt a week earlier vs. the Giants) to blow right past him. At least Leavitt recovered the ball on the 1-yard line, which allowed our defense the opportunity to hold them to a field goal.

I've heard it said plenty of times that the NFL is a "copycat league" and if that is true, why is it that teams like Belichick's Patriots and Harbaugh's Raven's are among the league's leaders in special teams and we are among the lower rated teams year after year. Why don't the Packers' analysts study and copy what these guy are doing? I just think how nice it would be to have a special teams that was rated among the top five for a change.

Yes why not . The sixties teams were always solid in every phase. That should always be our standard.

One word - priorities. ST's hasn't been a priority in many years.
Holmgren had a talented roster, good st coach and struck gold with DHoward.
Since then, ST has been an afterthought.
TT drafted athletes almost more than football players.
IMO, ST'ers are football players moreso than athletes.

I posted here after attending the week 1 game last year... GBs punter takes an extra step in his approach. Idk why this isn't obvious to people that watch tape. Not the OL fault he takes longer to get the ball out.

I'm pretty sure that's not true.
Even If it is true, the number of steps isn't as critical as the total time it takes to get the ball out.
I know they've got stopwatches to monitor time.
