Van Ness and Sorrell Could Become Late Season Heroes
What's been a buried season for both players could turn around.
By GregMeinholz

Ever have one of those days where you wish you would suddenly wake up and find out that the day you thought you had was all a dream? Well, that's how Green Bay Packers fans felt on Sunday evening. After Micah Parsons went down with what ended up being a torn ACL, fans either wanted that or someone to hit the reset button on the game console. What was a promising season with possible Super Bowl aspirations just took a huge blow.
There is no replacing a player like Micah Parsons. He led the team with 12.5 sacks and demanded the offense's undivided attention any time he was on the field, or he would wreak havoc on the quarterback. There is zero doubt that the Packers' pass rush was improved in 2025 because of Micah Parsons. But now number 1 isn't on the field until hopefully early next season. So, what now?
An easy option to turn to is Rashan Gary. Gary is next in line after Micah Parsons with 7.5 sacks. But Gary hasn't registered a sack since week 8 in Pittsburgh and has only four QB hits. With Parsons gone, he's now likely to command the most attention amongst Packers' pass rushers. JJ Enagbare is expected to see a workload increase without Parsons on the field, but Enagbare has not had a very fruitful season thus far, despite lining up for almost 40% of the Packers' defensive snaps in 14 games. The Packers need some life from two pass rushers who have a lot of talent, but haven't seen the field a lot this season.
Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell have kind of been the forgotten pass rushers this season, and that could change starting on Saturday.
Their Time is Now
Van Ness had a strong training camp and got off to a decent start in the first five games with 1.5 sacks and ten pressures, but a foot injury following his sack of Joe Flacco in Cincinnati cost him half the season so far. He attempted a comeback against Minnesota a few weeks ago, but that didn't work out as after six snaps he found he still needed a little time, and finally returned to the lineup fully on Sunday against the Broncos. He only saw the field for 22 snaps, 32% of the Packers' defensive total, registering two tackles.
If Van Ness's foot is fully healed this time around, he could see an increased workload, and without Micah Parsons on the field, it's his time to show that he wasn't a waste of a top-15 draft pick after all. Back in July and early August, the hype of an LVN year 3 breakout was real. The former first-round pick was in the offensive backfield nearly every time Jordan Love dropped back to pass. He was making short work of tackles Rasheed Walker and Jordan Morgan, causing Love to either scramble out of the way or get rid of the ball a bit sooner than he wanted.
Barryn Sorrell has been a forgotten defensive end this season, mainly due to his place on the depth chart. He's only seen 15% of defensive snaps throughout 12 games this season. In that time, he has registered a half sack and three QB pressures. Throughout training camp and preseason, it was worth noting Sorrell's unique athleticism for someone of his size. He showed an ability to use his quickness to simply side-step block attempts en route to the Quarterback and used his hands very well to avoid letting offensive linemen get a hold of him early out of the gate.
With his regular-season opportunities, Sorrell has shown explosive potential. Against Chicago in week 14, he easily shed Bears' right tackle, Darnell Wright, and if not for the guard stepping in at the last minute, Sorrell would've had another sack on the season. Instead, he flushed Caleb Williams out of the pocket and up the middle for a minimal gain. He's also helped out in the running game, shedding blocks at the right moment to wrap up the ball carrier, and has shown a high motor in tracking down the ball across the field to make a play.
Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell will see an increase in opportunities with Micah Parsons sidelined. They have the talent, but we will find out if they can turn that talent into production and turn around their 2025 season.

It’s as likely Cox does more in terms of getting to the QB, given that he did last year. However, it’s time for LVN to step up, for himself as much as the team.

I agree. Cox is a boatload of talent, waiting to explode. Fuse just never gets lit.
Had he been more "focused" and less goofy in college, he could have been a first round draft talent.
As a Packer, the goofy stuff seems gone. By accounts, he is doing a really good job playing DE in Hafley's D. Then the injury. Crap.
Maybe he's ready to go. It could be fun.

Cox needs to be activated, first, which seems like a gimme at this point. We'll find out about that soon enough.

"If Van Ness's foot is fully healed this time around..."
Raise your hand if you have had a serious foot injury. If Van Ness can bring it Saturday, I will be impressed.
And say, Hercules, I Salute you!

I expected more out of Van Ness but so far he's been flat.
It's more than time to step up, this is when the stars rearrange and come out to be noticed

Just as Philly went and grabbed Phillips, let’s go grab Judon.
Go Packers!!!

I haven’t followed Judon this year but his stats are anemic. Not sure if that is injury or decline but that would be a concern, does he have anything left to bring. - your thought was my initial thought until I saw his stats this year. Maybe someone has more info on that.

Right Tex—I don’t know the details of his release. I thought maybe it was worth kicking the tires.

I'm not sure if they can 'dig down' deep enough. Hopefully, it's not as hard as caliche.

These guys will be practicing with the first team, they'll get their opportunities, and together they'll (hopefully) offset the loss of Parsons a little. The last three opponents are all running teams, so that might help a little, too.

Let's hope that the Luke Ness Monster emerges from the depths of obscurity to terrorize opponents.

We will be fine! (at least for da Bears game).
How do I know this? I reenacted the game 12 times on my old vibrating electonic football board and the Pack won all 12 times!
*I added a couple stacked nickels on the corners of the Packer side of the board. Geez, our O-line had their way with da Bears DL. And you could just imagine our DLine (sans Micah) brought the JUICE!

Come on galz and guyz...we will be fine. I walked into my kitchen and have a good feeling about this game.
I took a swig of coffee, wiped my lipz on my flannel sleeve and put my favorite mug down. I knew right then and there.....
As I looked at the countertop, and just smiled. The rest of the boys on the Packer team will do it for-Micah. Please don't take this current version of the Packers for granite.
Hug someone, and if you gotz long arms...yourself too.
Talk nerdy to me,

When you say granite, are you talking about your kitchen counter?
Talk nerdy?
Just like that?
What, you think we're easy?
You're gonna have to try harder, you gotta to earn it.

Let me go back to the drawing board, erase the Packer Power Sweep...and get back to ya.
Peace you wild and crazy guy.

If Parsons was always doubled why don't we double an area of the OL and shoot a backer thru preferably #56.

Man, you guys and gals...I gotta get some shut eye to be my best tomorrow. Another photo shoot.
But I have an idea I just had to share. How about we have LVN play his normal position on D but also use him as an in-line TE on the first series?
Lean in brotherz and sisterz. I was taught this at an early age:
Luke both wayz, before you cross...the goal line.
Okay, got get up early. Someone has to get up early to shake the trees and wake up da birdz.
Tootbirds. (I typed tootles and this is what AI gave me) ... that right there is funny!

We love you, but listen.
Just because, you go both wayz, does NOT mean that Luke can.
Just sayin.

Kingsley Enagbare is more likely to have an impact worth noting rather than Van Ness or Sorrell. Sorrell is young, Van Ness is a vet so his body of work, or lack of it, is on record.
