This Young Packers Team Is Showing Resilience Early

We all knew this young Green Bay Packers team would have growing pains this year. But the good news so far is that this team has shown resilience and a never-say-die attitude in overcoming obstacles to win football games despite those growing pains.

The Packers have a new starting quarterback in Jordan Love who entered the season with just one NFL start under his belt. If that wasn’t enough, he was taking over for a future Hall of Famer who had been the quarterback for the previous 15 years who took over for another Hall of Famer who was under center for 16 seasons.

None of the Packers wide receivers have more than one year of NFL experience and the two top traditional tight ends on the depth chart are rookies.

Green Bay entered their Week 3 game against the Saints facing some early adversity. The team had just blown a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter against Atlanta to lose 25-24.

They also entered the home opener against the Saints without four of the best players on their roster. Running back Aaron Jones, left tackle David Bakhtiari and left guard Elgton Jenkins were all starters and former Pro Bowl players and all three were out with injuries against the Saints. So was the team’s top deep threat in second-year wide receiver Christian Watson.

On defense, the Packers learned that Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander would also miss the game with a bad back. In the first half, former All-Pro inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell left the game with an ankle injury.

That meant the Packers were without six of their best players and oh yeah, they fell behind the Saints 17-0 after three quarters.

It would have been easy for this team to quit. They had been outscored 30-0 in the last four quarters of play and were struggling to find any consistency and rhythm on offense. But they picked themselves off the canvas and mounted a comeback.

The defense stepped up and kept the team in the game, allowing just five first downs and zero points in the second half. The defense tightened up its coverage and not only got the ball back but got it back quickly. The Saints punted on their first five possessions of the second half and didn’t have a drive longer than six plays until their final possession of the game.

The offense started to move the ball and gradually shaved points off the New Orleans lead.

Despite being shorthanded and facing a very highly regarded defense, the Packers scored on three consecutive drives and won the game 18-17.

The young skill players on this team showed confidence and never gave up in the face of adversity. There were plenty of mistakes throughout the game including 11 penalties for 90 yards. There were also lots of poorly thrown passes, unfinished pass patterns, or players who ran the wrong routes altogether, but it didn’t stop this team from believing in themselves.

With the game on the line, Love was able to keep his cool and improvise when plays broke down. The successful two-point conversion was a great example. The original target wasn’t open but Love scrambled, extended the play and found Samori Toure to pull the team to within six points. The Packers sideline erupted, and this young team had a sense the game was still there for the taking.

The growing pains were on full display, but they still found a way to stay in the game and ultimately win it.

The 2023 Packers are not yet a great football team. Many players are still early in the process of learning how to play and win in the NFL. But the fact that this team is clearly having fun again, is showing confidence and is somehow winning football games while they learn is a very encouraging sign.

This team will likely have some ugly games before the season is over, games when everything goes wrong, and they just look bad in all three phases. But the attitude this team has played with and the way they don’t quit gives Packers fans plenty of reasons for optimism about the long-term future of this team even at this early stage of the season.

the injuries are piling up again. Its kind of obvious now, and the pack cant hide it, that Bahk is done and never really healed from his major knee injuries. Time for a medical settlement and move on.
Pack need to investigate the training staff and why all the lower body soft tissue stuff.
I used to say Ted T was terrible in the draft. Dont think he ever took past injuries into consideration and thats why this team led the league in injuries all the time. Picking injury prone people.
Gutt must have picked up on this too.
Lions will feast on that O line were putting out on Thursday. Your behind the eight ball and the game hasnt even started.

Care to share your official data on this claim?

pretty sure most NFL teams have injuries to starters just like the Packers....only thing im wondering is why do these spring up when these kids enter the NFl? Is it the weight training and added muscle that the training staff wants them to have?? Watson wasn't injury prone in college...

that you "used to say" something does not prevent it from being objectively ridiculous.

get back to us when the lions actually win something.

Probably not a good idea to leave your seat before the game is over with this bunch. I was all ready to go out to the pool but I never thought it was over . I actually figured NO would make the FG and we’d have a minute to answer.

If we ever get all of our horses on the field at the same time..

I was at the game and the 4th quarter euphoria quickly dissipated when the Saints quickly drove down the field into FG range with a backup QB.

The miss was fortunate or this board would be very different this week.

But you know what, LH? The way the OL was pass blocking with Love and the young WRs were making plays...with Carlson on the sidelines...I think the Packers would have drove for a winning FG in the last minute.

yes, lets not forget that while the "W" was nice, the saints were missing Carr, the Pack had two long DPI's to help, and the Saints had driven into a fairly easy FG by NFL standards....but...its a win...gotta have these kind once in awhile...

And learn to play run defense like the Lions? Maybe watch the Lions-Falcons game and realize Ridder is no Mahomes or anywhere close to that zip code.

Packers should be 3-0 and blew it. The more physical teams wins tomorrow night.

This team is showing self belief and unity. I think that it’s in part youth and a sense of a fresh start without vast expectations in part. Love however, seems to be a unifier. His temperament and demeanor seems to just foster trust and unity. I didn’t see that coming. That’s one hell of a quality in a QB. The players all reference Love as the focal point constantly. That is the most impressive development for me this year.

I think some of the young guys might be showing a little toughness that was lacking in the recent past. I definitely think the more physical team will win tomorrow night.

Of all of the attributes this young team and its nascent QB may or may not have possessed, the one I was most curious about was how would they respond in the face of adversity? To quote Kipling, "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you."

They passed their first trial with aplomb and answered one of Kipling's measures of a man.

We need to get healthy soon. Does anyone know if Watson had injury issues in college? Obviously very concerning with all the time he’s missed going back to last year.

I’m a NDSU fan—and yes, Watson missed a few games in college too.

He missed 3 games with a hamstring at one point, but that’s the only multi game one I remember from looking at him pre draft. He certainly wasn’t what I would call
Injury prone.

I heard a comment in the radio today about Gil's very topic here...the resiliency of the young Packers.

He said "yeah, lots of youth. But the drama of the last few years with Rodgers universally involved with all levels of the team and imposing his personal will on things is gone now. They just want to play football and they believe in their new QB."

I finally got to witness it in person this past Sunday at Lambeau Field. I used to be an avid baseball fan years ago and I just loved the saying that Yogi Berra used to use.

My all time favorite: "IT AIN'T OVER TIL IT'S OVER" and old Yogi couldn't have been more right when looking at the Packer/Saints game. I felt about as optimistic as a man in a hole looking down as we headed into the fourth quarter and the our new quarterback and the rest of the team really turned it on.

I flew out from California to see the game and it was worth every penny.

I like the saying (might be from Mike Tyson?)...everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.

Football is physicality, but when coupled with the mental makeup and grit...truly a thing of beauty.

This might be the making of a rivalry (sorry bears, not sorry)

Yours until eternity,

P-burp
