These Depth Wide Receivers Made a Big Impression at OTAs

The Green Bay Packers have a crowded receiver room. The team will likely keep six wideouts on the 53-man roster to start the season and they have a lot of candidates to fill those spots. First round pick Matthew Golden and third round pick Savion Williams are locks to make the roster. Jayden Reed led the Packers in catches last year. Dontayvion Wicks and Romeo Doubs both played major roles last year. Yet, two other wideouts made a big impression at OTAs. They are free agent addition, Mecole Hardman and Cornelius Johnson who spent last season on the practice squad.

Hardman signed with the Packers over the offseason after spending the last six seasons with the Chiefs and was part of three Super Bowl winning teams. His most productive season as a receiver came in 2021 when he caught 59 passes for 693 yards and two touchdowns. His production has fallen since then. In 2024, he caught just 12 passes for 90 yards.

In addition to being a receiver, Hardman is a talented return specialist. He earned Pro Bowl honors as a return specialist in 2019. At the 2019 scouting combine, Hardman was timed at 4.33 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Wednesday, Hardman closed out practice by catching an impressive 74-yard bomb from Jordan Love. Deep plays like that may be more important because Christian Watson will miss at least the first half of the season as he rehabs from knee surgery. Hardman has been noticed at OTAs by his playmaking and highlight reel catches.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said Hardman has done a “Great job” at OTAs. “Obviously the value as a returner has always been there, and he has had some production. And obviously he's made some big plays throughout the course of his career,” LaFleur added. “It’s just nice to have a guy that's played and played in some big-time moments. You always want competition, so it's great to have a guy like that.”

Meanwhile, Cornelius Johnson made a good impression during OTAs as well. The former Michigan star spent time on the Packers practice squad last year. He was a seventh-round pick by the Chargers in 2024. He has good size at 6’3” and 208 pounds and recorded a relative athletic score of 9.46. His 40 time at the combine was 4.44. The Packers signed him to a futures contract after the 2024 season ended.

Johnson was productive at Michigan and was part of their national championship winning team in 2023. That year, he caught 47 passes for 604 yards.

Johnson has made an impact this week at OTAs. He scored two touchdowns on Thursday and grabbed three passes on Wednesday including a 40-yard grab thrown by backup quarterback Malik Willis.

Johnson remains a long shot to make the Packers roster. But he has certainly made a good impression during OTAs, which is the first step for any player trying to make the team after a year on the practice squad.

Meanwhile, Hardman may have a better chance to make the final roster because of his experience and his ability to return kicks and punts. If the Packers want to avoid exposing Keisean Nixon to injury if he is going to be the team’s top cornerback, Hardman gives the team a realistic alternative.

Anything that happens at OTAs has to be taken with a grain of salt. There is no contact and no pads and the scrimmages are not played at full speed. But, as the expression goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression and both Hardman and Johnson made a good first impression this week at OTAs. They still have their work cut out for them once training camp begins late next month.

Looks to me like it's Hardman, Melton, and Heath competing for the sixth and final WR spot. Hard to see Cornelius Johnson breaking into that conversation. He would need to be really impressive to jump ahead of three players who have been in the league for awhile.

I'm thinking Hardman has the edge right now due to his experience as a returner. I wonder if Hardman's strong showing in the OTAs had something to do with Melton being tried out at CB. Hardman and Melton are similar players, but on special teams, a return specialist is generally more valuable than a gunner. That difference could make it extremely difficult for Melton to beat out Hardman for a roster spot at WR.

Unfortunately, I think Melton will go the way of Alex McGough. It’s laudable the Packers are giving them an opportunity to bolster their resumes before the cut to 53.

It is way too early to name the front 6 before the end of preseason . I think Golden and Reed are the only "for sure's" The rest of the positions are open. In fact all the positions are open at this time. Once agsin Melton gets no respect. I have him as three dimensional at WR, Spec teams and CB. Frankly, I see him in the CB room permanently. I think he may be one of the big CB surprises at training camp. But, of course time will tell.

I guess the 1st week of training camp will be interesting for Melton. I don't know who prompted who to try but looking at a 90 man w/ ten or twelve receivers fighting for 6 positions would have me looking for a alternative route to the 53. Do I think Melton can do a Shield at age 26 IDK but like Shields he has one elite trait (speed) and he is a willing tackler so why not. He isn't going to start but he could learn enough to be corner 6 and do ST.

You want to carry 6 and play the 5 healthiest.

I would submit that the Packers are going to carry Reed, Wicks, Golden, and Williams. Barring an Act of God, they'll be on the 53. If/When Watson is ready to play, he'll be on the 53. So all of the rest are competing for maybe one spot.

Hardman could be our #5. Melton could be our #6.

+++++++++++

I haven't mentioned Doubs, because as I've explained earlier, this guy is a $3.4M hit. He has a concerning injury history. If he gets hurt, we've lost $3.4M, and if he stays healthy and plays well, we can't afford to resign him. I don't see him as part of the future after this season, and I do think we'd be better off keeping a guy like Melton or Hardman, at least until Watson is ready to roll.

I think Doubs has been a real good player for us. The injury history and contract make me hope that we'll move forward without him.

You don't not include him because he might not be here next year. If you're saying we're getting rid of him before we have to set a 53, fine, but if he's in Green Bay he's ahead of Wicks and Williams until one of them proves otherwise

Doubs is one hit (head) away from retirement. He is not worth the financial risk.
Trade him now - while there is value.

If Doubs is as big of an injury risk as you think he is, what trade value does he have?

Think about it- you basically just said he can't be resigned because he's a ticking time bomb. If you believe that, what makes you think another team is going to trade anything of worth for him?

The biggest ROI the Packers can get from Doubs is his play on the field. If he plays well, Great! If the Packers can't afford to keep him because he played so well.. Comp Pick! If Doubs goes down with injury and his career ends? Despite what Leatherhead might have us believe, $3.4 million is as close to a non-issue cap expenditure as can be.

The reality is, every player on the field is one play away from being retired. Doubs is an asset. Play the man. Worry about injury and re-signing when/if those issues come to be. In the meantime, this WR bird in the hand is worth much more than the (very small) Trade bird in the bush. That's corny, but you know what I mean :)

Why Wicks? He’s been hyped a lot on here especially , but honestly I have not seen much production from him and definitely not as good as Doubs in the red zone.

Ty Summers also made a big impression in OTA's several years ago. Supposedly he was the steal of the draft based on OTA's and 2 preseason games.. He made 37 tackles in 3 years and is now on his 4th team. OTA's with no pads doesn't tell you a whole lot.
