There's a New QB2 in Title Town

The addition of Tyrod Taylor provides stability at QB2

There was one collective notion amongst Green Bay Packers this past March when former backup QB Malik Willis signed with the Miami Dolphins, "Well, there goes our best backup QB since Matt Flynn." For a franchise that's only had three different week 1 quarterbacks in the last 32 years, the only real QB controversy in Green Bay outside of the seasons when Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers were traded was "who will back up the franchise QB?" The nightmare scenario of QB1 going down for an extended period has been fairly rare for the Packers over this period, but as of late, it's not uncommon. And outside of Matt Flynn, Malik Willis, and Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love themselves during their respective time as QB2, that backup slot hasn't been the most reliable.

Packer fans all knew from the start of the 2025 season that Malik Willis likely wouldn't be back in 2026. There was just no way with the success he'd had in relief of Jordan Love that a team in need of a new QB direction wouldn't pay him to start. Just before the season ended, the Packers signed Desmond Ridder, a fourth-year QB, to the practice squad and before their playoff game vs the Bears, elevated Ridder to the active roster. There was a notion that Ridder might compete for the QB2 position in 2026 and that he could be the next Packers' QB talent reclamation project. Ridder wasn't thought of as a reliable backup, but he had just enough talent to be intriguing in Matt LaFleur's offense if things clicked.

Well, we'll never know what could've been with Desmond Ridder, for on Monday, the Packers released Ridder after signing 16-year veteran Tyrod Taylor. Taylor, a bit of a journeyman quarterback, has played for seven different NFL franchises, with Green Bay being his eighth. He's started games for six of those teams, having a total of 62 starts throughout his NFL career. Taylor, originally a 6th-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2011, signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2015 and beat out Matt Cassel and former 1st-round pick, E.J. Manuel, for the starting job. Taylor didn't look back from that and was Buffalo's starter for the next three seasons. After being traded to the Browns in 2018, Taylor would go on to play the QB2 role the next eight seasons for Cleveland, LA Chargers, Houston, New York Giants, and New York Jets, starting 19 games in that span.

Taylor has always been a bit of a dual-threat QB, rushing for 1,575 yards during his starting tenure in Buffalo. But he has also been a good passer, eclipsing 3,000 yards in two of his starting seasons in Buffalo, and he has also taken fairly good care of the football, not being prone to many interceptions throughout his career.

While there are no delusions that the Packers just signed 2015 Tyrod Taylor, Taylor does provide an immediate upgrade at the backup QB position.

The most seasoned QB2 in over a decade

The Packers' philosophy behind their franchise QB over the last 30 years has often been to have a young and talented developmental QB. It's been very rare that they've had a backup quarterback with more starts than you can count on one hand in the last few decades. Probably the most seasoned backup the Packers have had in 20 years would be Seneca Wallace, who started 21 games before his time with the Packers.

Though Tyrod Taylor isn't quite as mobile as he may have been ten years ago and won't be replacing Malik Willis in that category, he still provides a dual-threat ability that fits well in LaFleur's scheme. The Packers are in win-now mode. The last thing they want, if God-forbid Jordan Love goes down, is a QB2 that they have to change the scheme around. Taylor provides them with the insurance they need so that they can put him in the game with minimal adjustment. Most contenders need that luxury, where, sure, it's bad when QB1 goes down, but QB2 may still provide them with enough stability to pull off a win.

Also, a bonus, since Taylor's signing comes after the draft, it won't count against the number of compensatory picks Green Bay will receive next year. So, the absurd amount of 2027 draft picks remains untouched.

Tyrod Taylor has always been a low-turnover, steady presence behind center, which matches Jordan Love's style a bit. While the signing is a bit of a head-scratcher to some, it keeps the QB2 stability intact. Granted, Jordan Love sat behind one of the best QBs to ever play the game for the first years of his career, Taylor may still provide an experienced voice in the QB room for Love to learn from. You can never have too much knowledge in the most important position in football.

I'm relieved Gutey was able to sign him. I've watched him play and he's fully capable of leading the team if Love is unavailable. I wasn't so sure about Ridder.

Ridder is 8-10. Taylor is 30-32-1. So there’s not a lot in it in those terms other than volume. Taylor was 1-3 last year with a bad completion record. However, he was in a terrible offense.

I like the experience as long as the age hasn’t started decline. I don’t see a vast amount of difference between them. Taylor has also made his money in a predominantly short pass game, which is not the Packers’ signature typically and certainly not with Willis. He’s also been injury prone.

I see a lot of people relieved, I suppose I’m not really one of them. With Ridder at least there was a chance we could improve him by scheme as well as coaching. Taylor is what he is, or a slightly less athletic version of himself. Perhaps it’s name recognition, I don’t know, but I’m going to hope he stays healthy and, more importantly, so does Love. The best benefit might be on the sidelines if they gel.

I was one of those who was fine with Ridder albeit from the outside looking in. His termination after a brief four months with the Pack speaks to something going seriously haywire. Whether he didn't mesh with LaFleur or he had an injury or there was an attitude issue or something else, I don't know, but the quick switch from Ridder to Taylor I think says more about Ridder than it does about Taylor. We will see how Taylor does.

I agree with your take. I was not lamenting Ridder per se, rather expressing my puzzlement over the apparently common belief that we just got a lot better with Taylor.

I am with you on the apparent short list of Ridder fans CW. I honestly think we would have been fine with Ridder as a backup in our system. He has never been with a good team in his career, so this was his best opportunity since he was drafted. With his body of work in college at Cincinnati, I thought he would turn into a solid NFL QB.

Taylor is definitely more seasoned, is he 10 or 12 years older than Ridder? I am guessing GB wanted the bigger body of work in the end. Nobody has said what we signed Taylor for, hopefully nothing crazy. Love has been banged up the last 2 years so a solid backup is a necessity.

The kid behind them, McCord seems like a talent to hang onto. His potential is pretty strong. The other QB, Drones, might be an indication of what GB wants at QB. Willis gave us a taste of being able to pass and run, that's a tough combo to stop. Rodgers was mainly a great passer who could extend plays, McCord seems to be that type too.

I guess other options might have been Richardson at Indy. You could bet the Colts would want a number of draft picks for a guy who has shown even less.

I guess they could ask DeShone Kizer to come back.

There's a reason Taylor is still sought in the league. The guy can play and start if he has to. That's why several NFL teams, including the Packers, decided he was worth it.

Both Ridder and Taylor played with mediocre to awful teams. Their won-loss record is another example of how numbers can lie.

Yes Taylor was a good addition . Love it seems has been missing games regularly the last few seasons so Taylor’s experience should come in handy sooner or later . I was a big fan of Willis and I will be rooting for him in Miami . For me it will be interesting to see who has a better season Love or Willis . And who misses more games .

Time will tell but I think lots of Packer fans will see how much MLF meant to Willis and his performance. In his starts he was put in great situations and was basically told to not screw it up. Now that he is starting on a team with a poor roster he will be asked to win games.

Willis hit throw after throw, including several deep shots, while also running for first downs. He did a lot more than just not screwing up.

Willis played great and did everything that was asked of him. But, I agree with the point that Bucky was trying to make. Lafleur is an excellent QB mentor and Willis might not get that in Miami along with a much less talented roster than in GB.

I hope Love and Willis both have great years. We need that 3rd round comp pick in 2027.

If his number is called, I hope he does better than Seneca Wallace. I think Wallace played significant snaps in one game, which did not go well, and the next time he played, against the Eagles at Lambeau Field, he immediately pulled his groin, and that was the end of his career. I remember it well because I was at that game--my first Packer game in years. Instead of getting to see Aaron Rodgers, we had to watch Scott Tolzein. He couldn't do anything, and the Packers lost to the Eagles and Nick Foles, who seemed to be more lucky than good. Foles eventually won a Super Bowl for them, so go figure.

I think Tyrod Taylor is a good choice for QB 2. Fingers crossed that he stays healthy, as he is getting up there in years.

really, we're harkening back to Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzein? my hope is that Tyrod Taylor's opportunities are all kneel downs to close out games.

GregC—I was at the Philly game too. I was actually excited to see Wallace play and then he lasted one play—I was like, you’re kidding me.
And as you said, that ended it for him.
…enter Tolzien…aaaghhh!!

Seemed Ridder was all but locked in to QB2 and it was surprising he was cut...until reading about Taylor.

Good get. 36 yrs old but solid NFL QB skills, over 60 games starting experience, intelligence, takes care of the ball and seems to be a leader. He will be a great wingman for Love.

Taylor could very well be a better QB than Malik Willis. I think he has the more live arm. The system that MLF runs makes decision making easy (easier than most offenses) for QBs. If you go back and look at the film Willis put out in Green Bay he wasn't ever asked to do very much. His average yard per attempt was below average and he didn't push the ball down field very often if at all. I have a feeling MLF can put together a game plan that will allow the talent around Taylor to win games like he did with Willis. Ridder was a QB I thought ok maybe he can get better but now they have a back up that just needs to learn the system.

I think for the next couple of years it will be good to have a QB with lots of experience. Not only for when he will have to fill in, which is a scenario that more than likely happens, but for Love to have an extra coach in the QB room as well.

His average yard per attempt was below average? His career average is 8.5. His two years in GB it was 10.2 and 12.1. All well ABOVE average.

Why is every backup QB deemed to be a good get for whatever team signs them? These guys are backups for justified reasons. They show a flash and fade quickly. Foles was the anomaly and not a rule one should incorporate as the norm.

Hmmm… how can i rain on this parade and score some points for the Dark Side… Well OK, you need a backup quarterback, but… hmm… hmm… I know! Backup quarterbacks suck!

I have nothing against going with Taylor over Ridder. Ridder is younger and has a chance to improve but I believe Taylor provides a better security blanket (yes it is one of those annoying short ones that do not cover your feet). One thing to think about is Taylor has has played under 9 or 10 different OCs so he should bring more knowledge to the QB2 position.

He might win half of the games he starts if needed and that is all I ask of a QB2. No he will not be a Tom Brady when he was a QB2.

I'm also interested in the side show that could happen between Taylor and Drones - as student-teacher. It would be fantastic if the ceiling for Drones turned out to be Malik Willis - with his floor - Tyrod Taylor.
