The Packers Still Have a Dilemma at Kicker
By GilMartin

We are roughly halfway through the 2025 NFL season, and the Green Bay Packers still have a lot of questions to answer. The team is 5-2-1 and in first place in the NFC North, but they clearly haven’t played consistently up to their talent level. Head coach Matt LaFleur has some big decisions to make including one about the team’s kicker. Should the Packers stick with veteran Brandon McManus or go with Lucas Havrisik?
Before the season started, McManus seemed to have a secure hold on the kicking job. Afterall, the previous season, he joined the team before their seventh game and solved the team’s longstanding kicking issues. After parting ways with Mason Crosby, the Packers struggled to find a reliable kicker. They drafted Anders Carlson in 2023, but he ended up leading the league in missed kicks.
In 2024, the team went through a half dozen candidates during OTAs and training camp before settling on Brayden Narveson. He also struggled so the Packers turned to McManus. The veteran ended the season with a perfect 30-for-30 on extra points while hitting 20-of-21 field goals. His only miss came on a very windy, rainy day at Lambeau Field.
During the offseason, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst signed McManus to a three-year contract extension worth a total of $15.3 million including $5 million in guaranteed money. The only competition the Packers brought in during training camp was part of the NFL’s International Players Program.
But things didn’t go according to plan this season. McManus suffered an injured quad and missed two games. The Packers signed Havrisik to fill in for McManus and the newcomer delivered. Havrisik made all six of his extra points and all four of his field goal tries. That included a 61-yard field goal against the Cardinals that set a new Packers franchise record for the longest kick. He was also consistently getting his kickoffs into the landing zone.
McManus returned to the lineup when the Packers faced the Steelers, but the Packers still kept Havrisik on their roster. McManus struggled in both games since his return. He’s attempted seven field goals in those two games but missed three of them including two from makable distances of under 50 yards. Were the misses due to the fact that the quad was not 100 percent healed?
Despite McManus’ struggles, head coach Matt LaFleur stuck with him. But now, this week, LaFleur indicated things could be different. When asked about the kicking situation, he hinted at possible changes.
“I think every time it’s a competitive situation,” LaFleur said. “So, we’re going to have both the guys kick today, and we’ll kind of see where Brandon’s at in terms of his health and whatnot and go with who we feel like gives us the best opportunity to go out there and compete and win.”
While LaFleur acknowledged McManus’ struggles, he reiterated he still had confidence in the veteran. When asked why, he simply answered, “Because I see it every day.”
The Packers may keep both kickers on the active roster come game day on Monday. If he’s healthy, McManus will probably start the game as the team’s kicker. But he will have no margin for error. If McManus misses a makable field goal or extra point, LaFleur and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia could replace him with Havrisik for the next kicking opportunity.
Long term, the team also has several options. They know if they place Havrisik on waivers or place him on their practice squad, they’ll likely see him claimed by another team. As long as they don’t have an urgent need for another roster spot, they can keep two kickers on the 53-man roster.
Another option is to place McManus on IR and let his quad fully heal. Under those circumstances, he’d have to miss a minimum of four games. Havrisik could continue to kick in the meantime. Once McManus was fully healthy, Gutekunst and LaFleur would have another decision to make.
The good news is the Packers have a reliable alternative on the roster to kick as long as McManus continues to struggle. But ultimately, the team must determine if McManus’ struggles are due to the injury or if he’s simply no longer able to consistently get the job done. One thing is certain; the Packers cannot afford to lose any more games due to missed field goals or extra points.

With inconsistency all over the field this season, it'd be really nice if McManus was just nice and steady :(

McManus is a good kicker. But the guy is injured. Put Luke in until McManus is healed. No controversy as this article suggests.

I totally agree. Why is McManus on the field if he is not 100% healthy? I just don't understand the logic in that. The coach and special teams coach have to go. This is just stupid. I hope the new president gets rid of both of them before more damage is done. And don't get me started on the head coach's play calling.

81.6% career kicker. That's a mediocre average by today's standards. '24 was by far an outlier and a career year. He's 34. I'd use the young guy until he proves he isn't the answer, if he does. Pack is only stuck with $5 million guaranteed for McManus if they move on from him.

The look on (the holder) Whelan's face in that picture is a classic ... "Oh shit, he's done it again".

There is no kicker controversy. McManus is a stud and we’re lucky to have him. He was/is probably still mildly injured or recovering from the quad. This isn’t about a kicker controversy as much as a coaching decision. We have a great kicker, and his back up isn’t bad either. What the coaches decide to do with that is the real issue., not the kicking talent.

Imagine a kicker comes in and makes all of his kicks including a 61yd record breaking field goal! Then.... he is benched for someone who routinely misses 40+ yd kicks! Stunning! Who makes these decisions? We could be undefeated if we had good special teams.

There must be a very good reason why Bisaccia is paid all that money, promoted to assistant HC, and earned an extension on his league leading ST deal.
For the life of me, is remains a mystery, wrapped in a shroud, surrounded by an enigma.
Nonetheless, LaFleur has decided Rich is the indispensable man must keep him in GB.

If you get a chance, read the article on Acme Packing Company by Justis Mosqedo:
“Well then, you can ask the head coach, but if you’re asking me, it’s Brandon McManus. I didn’t see it as a competition this week. I saw this as he’s getting healthier and had a pretty good week kicking the ball.”
"People miss kicks. People miss tackles. People miss throws. People miss catches. People miss blocks. He missed a kick in the game.”
Huh?

"Another option is to place McManus on IR and let his quad fully heal. Under those circumstances, he’d have to miss a minimum of four games. Havrisik could continue to kick in the meantime."
THIS is what should have happened weeks ago! McManus is injured and in those two games he's out he watches Havrisik kick EVERYTHING though the uprights including a new Green Bay Packers record 61 yard FG. Had he been on IR he could have healed and healed properly. Instead I'm sure he pushes himself and tried to go before he's 100%.
I don't understand some of the things this team does anymore. Putting McManus on IR for 4 weeks seemed like a no-brainer. But then again THIS staff does things like having Zack Tom compete for the RT job in training camp even though he's HANDS DOWN the best O-Lineman on the roster already. Never mind the shitload of money they had paid him too.
All I know is MLF's team better be ready to play. Play with some heart and like you have a pair for once!

Dilemma at the Kicker!!!!
The kicker is the least of the Packers problems!!!
Time to revisit my post from last Saturday, November 1st, prior to the Carolina Panthers visit to Lambeau, in response to Cheesehead Tv’s Gil Martin’s article, “Why the Packers Should Stand Pat at the NFL Trade Deadline”.
Here is last Saturday's response BEFORE Sunday's Panthers loss:
The Packers should stand pat because the GM "Gutey" has destroyed a team that had gone 42 wins and 11 losses (1 of those 11 losses was Jordan's start against the Chiefs in 2021) - best record in the entire NFL over that period - until the 4 time MVP and Super Bowl winning Super Bowl MVP broke his thumb.
In the years leading up to that 42-10 span that ended in October 2022, "Gutey" prevented those 2018-2022 Packers team - that was on the brink of multiple Super Bowl appearances - from accomplishing the team's goals by disrespecting its veteran star players and thus destroying team chemistry and not adding the offensive weapons in the draft that the team needed.
Poor Jordan has been over his head from the start and should have been a 3rd or 4th rounder.
Nice guy, but Jordan's mediocre 22-16-1 record as a starter (I credit Malik with the Jaguar win last year) is only that good because of the play calling genius of Lafleur - Murphy's choice - who has to work with what he was left with .
The true tests come about when the season is on the line against superior teams and Lafleur can no longer use - Aaron Jones, now Jacobs - and some terrific Yards after catch receivers and tight ends that carry Jordan like Rodgers carried the entire Packer team and Gutekunst - saving his job.
Poor Jordan when the season was on the line has graced us with 72.4 passer rating and a 2 interception 4th quarter against the 49ers making yet another mindless throw reminiscent of his all of college football - both FCS and FBC - leading interceptions - and then last year, even worse, 41.5 passer rating and 3 interceptions against the Eagles with the season once again on the line - big time chokes.
Do not be fooled by the 5-1-1 start. The Steelers rank 32nd - in passing yards surrendered per game.
The Cowboys rank 31st - in passing yards surrendered per game
The Bengals rank 30th - in passing yards surrendered per game
The Commanders rank 26th - in passing yards surrendered per game.
The Cardinals rank 25th - in passing yards surrendered per game
In other words, Jordan this year - thus far - has faced the weakest pass defenses in the NFL.
The Browns rank 5th - in passing yards surrendered per game. What happened there.
And to compound the RECORD contact after Jordan held out and held Gutey's feet to the fire, Gutey in desperation gave away the Packers run defense - in TJ Slaton and Kenny Clark - not to mention 2 first round draft picks - for a player that excels as a pass rusher but is a liability against the run. Before the Steelers moved away from their jumbo package last week in the 2nd half - due to the loss of guard Issac Seumalo to injury in the first half - they were running over the Packers defense.
As a die hard Packer fan, it is obvious what has happened despite the NFL's promotional propaganda.
Unfortunately I think it is going to be a long time before we see another Super Bowl.
So RESTRAIN "Gutey" before he does more damage.

Now my post for this week – before tomorrow’s Eagles game.
I AM NOT WORRIED AOBUT THE KICKER - THAT IS THE LEAST OF MY WORRIES!!!
So many Cheesehead TV writers and TV show Packer/Gutekunst Public relations/propagandists were predicting the Packers to blow out the Cardinals last week – some had the Packers scoring in the 40s and high 30s while holding the Cardinals nearly scoreless.
Obviously I was correct.
Now the Packers BRAINTRUST - i.e. "Gutey" - has Packer fans attention DIVERTED to the Kicker - that's just a distraction from the CORE PROBLEM - GUTEY!!
Though all that I wrote has been clear to most Packer fans since Gutekunst’s tone deaf, insensitive initial treatment of Jordy Nelson in March 2018 - and Nelson publicly described that treatment – the trends will continue to make the OBVIOUS clear to those who are still blinded by the FOG deliberately put out through 1265 Lombardi Ave.’s propagandists, all of whom know who controls access to player and coach and GM interviews.
And all but the Packer GM’s paid public relations people/propagandists on this board have known these realities for years:
1) Jordan warranted no better than a 3rd or 4th round draft pick – and that is being generous. If Gutekunst were not GM, Malik Willis would already be the starter.
2) Micah Parson’s is a one trick pony – though very good at that trick. He is one dimensional – great pass rusher and a liability against the run
3) Gutekunst has destroyed a team that would have been a Super Bowl winner and Super Bowl contender each year from 2018 through present and into the future with Rodgers at QB and Rodgers fellow veteran players retained – Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, Rasul Douglas, Mercedes Lewis (signed this week by Sean Payton to the Broncos practice squad).
4) And due to Jordan’s inaccuracy and HOSPITAL BALLS and Jordan’s skittishness and lack of pocket presence/awareness, game awareness and decision making mistakes, Gutekunst has had to over supply the Packers with yards after catch and acrobat receivers and tight ends and offensive lineman in the early rounds of the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 drafts, an abundance that Rodgers was made to do without through ost of his 15 years as a starter in Green Bay.
5) The talent at running back (Aaron Jones and now Jacobs) and gymnastics and yards after the catch abilities of the wide receivers (Watson, Doubs, Reed) and tight end (Kraft) in catching and running with Jordan’s CHUCK IT UP, THROW IT UP, HOSPITAL BALLS has rescued Jordan – last week against the Cardinals – 10th rated in passing yards per game – Jordan’s attempt to win the lottery didn’t work. The week before – against the worst pass defense, dead last/32nd in passing yards allowed Steelers, Jordan won the lottery at least 2 times as the referees didn’t call obvious offensive pass interference on Tucker Kraft – even Cory Behnke called it out on - and Watson was once again answered Jordan’s prayer and another Hospital Ball. This Packer fan hit it on the nose with his comment in Nagler’s “The Good, Bad and the Ugly: Panthers vs. Packers” video piece after last week’s Cardinals loss and Jordan’s incredibly stupid decision making:

Did Aaron Rodgers just chuck up balls to whomever? His receivers ran routes, he knew where they were.
But that fan and anyone that watched Jordan 2nd of 2 years of games in college as a starting quarterback knew Jordan’s penchant for “chucking balls up to whomever” when watching Jordan’s college games and Jordan of course led all of college football both FBS and FCS in most interceptions thrown in that 2nd and last year of college football as a starter at a 2nd level, non Power 5, college in terms of competition.
How can any Packer fan that watched Jordan’s games in college and the NFL question why Lafleur has tightened the restraints on Jordan? Other than Favre – 2nd year Favre and post Holmgren, post Super Bowl Favre of 1999 thru 2006 – what quarterback makes such stupid throws?
So look at each Jordan Love passing chart since Jordan became the starter for the 2023-24 season and put the throwing distances in a spreadsheet. This year 69.1% - or 161 of Jordan’s 233 Next Gen Stats charted pass attempts (Jordan has 250 total attempts but 17 are intentional throwaways out of bounds or spikes) are either thrown to running backs/receivers/tight ends behind the line of scrimmage or less than 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.
Is there any wonder why Jordan’s dead last passing accuracy measure – completion percentage – has increased?
In addition, a) Lafleur’s play calling creativity and coached up wide receiver blocking matched up previously with the b) unique vision and elusiveness of Packers’ locker room loved and fan loved Aaron Jones and Jones ability to find holes/daylight pre contact and then after Jones, matched up currently with c) Jacobs after contact determination and unselfish sacrifice of his body/career have allowed Lafleur to further hide Jordan’s VERY VERY real and obvious fundamental flaws, deficiencies and sleep walking appearance on the field, which makes his consistent poor decision making understandable. And Jordan will throw that interception rather than taking a sack for the good of the team and slide 2 and 3 yards short of a first down on crucial third and longs rather than risk being touched – so Jordan is awake at those times.
And the GUILT for the overuse of Josh Jacobs – as with the wide receiver usage of Davante Adams – can be all be laid at the feet of the incompetent, tone deaf, insensitive “Gutey”. Jacobs shortened career has been laid on him with Gutekunst’s CHEAP INSENSITIVE treatment of the loved Aaron Jones – who is back and led the Vikings defeat of the Lions last week with . For another measly $1 to $2 million in guaranteed money, Joens and Jacobs would have been pared this year and last and the Packers would have been much better and with Emmanuel Wilson to spell both.
Jordan after 5.5 years in the NFL is no better than a bottom tier starter or more appropriately a journeyman backup QB. Nice kid who got his money – good for him!
Give this team soon to be 42 year old Aaron Rodgers – or any other top 10 NFL starter and this 2025-26 team and the last 2023-24 and 2024-25 Packers teams are Super Bowl Bound. 2024-25’s Packers’ defense ranked highest - 6th - in fewest points allowed since 2010’s Super Bowl Winning Season. And the 2025-26 Packers are ranked 8th in points allowed – though it is only a matter of time before opposing teams exploit the undersized Packers line with the departure of Slaton and Clark and the addition of one dimensional Micah Parsons – and the 2023-24 Joe Barry’s Packer defense was ranked 10th.
Only 3 years (2009, 2010, and 2019) in Rodgers 15 years were the Packers’ defenses ranked 10th or better in fewest points allowed – Jordan has been blessed with top 10 defenses – and good average field position - all 3 of his years as a starter. And still Jordan finds ways to give games away!!
And Gutekunst knows he is responsible for preventing the ultimate Packer Super Bowl appearances and Super Bowl victories since at least officially being named GM in January 2018, probably longer given’s Ted’s long declining health. That is a waste of at least 8 years!
And no end is in sight!
When will the Packers see 15-1 again or 13-3, 13-3, 13-4 (13-3 with Rodgers as starter)?
Gutekunst must go – immediately – as much for his insensitive and tone deaf treatment of valued Packer veterans and destruction of team chemistry as for his OBVIOUS destructive – and BRAIN DEAD, LEGEND IN HIS OWN MIND trades and draft picks and record overpaid Franchise destroying contracts to a:
a) one dimensional Micah Parsons – a move Gutekunst made to win the same fan fare as Wolf and Thompson’s shrewd free agent signings of White and Woodson, multi-dimensional players, not one trick ponies
b) a never to be NFL franchise QB and certainly then an unproven Jordan who clearly can’t fill Starr, Favre or Rodgers shoes, nor Dickey’s or Majik’s – and all of them played in an era in which the QB did not have the protections that Jordan has now. Again “Gutey” was hoping for the same fan adulation Wolf received for the Favre trade and that Thompson received for the Rodgers draft pick but Favre and Rodgers had signature performances against #1 ranked Alabama and USC in college not 3 interception disasters and debacles like Jordan’s vs. Joe Burrow’s LSU and Josh Allen’s Wyoming.
Given these OBVIOUS stupid moves, you have to wonder if Gutekunst has been deliberately sinking the Packers.

Maybe. His dad coached the Gophers ..
They did blow it in Rodgers last years.
They know it Rodger’s knows it the fans know it the NFlL knows it .
Brady basically begging for Rodger’s to win with 3 picks …but in the 4th. Brady said you had your chance Kevin king sucks and I’m going to pick on him for tds and soft coverage like the. 49ers playoff loss at home. Blocked punt. 10 players on the field. Came down to that
There qb was hurt and couldn’t throw but the Illinois native came to Green Bay to knock us out throwing for 110 yards…his dream as a kid.
He was horrible that game. But yet. The block punt ….i was at the game on the 4 yard line and couldn’t throw see it coming.
Still makes me sick and disturbed me At Lambeau. Come on
The Vikings almost beat the Eagles with Wentz will see what we have going forward.
It could be worse and could mention other teams but won’t
I think Roger Godell likes 7-9. 8-8 9-8 teams.
It’s almost turning out to be the NBA. Horrible fundamentals and bad basketball….
I remember Zimmer hiring all his buddies in Minnesota and that doesn’t work
Matt has lots of buddies on the team coaching on the offensive side of the ball
It doesn’t work…
We will win by 8 plus Monday night

Short simple answer is put McManus on ir so he can come back for the playoffs.
