The Green Bay Packers selected eight players in the 2019 NFL Draft and all of them made the team as rookies. But where do these players stand heading into the 2020 season? What role will they play on the Packers in the coming season and beyond. Who will start, who will be role players and who are likely to be let go?

Here is an early look at the Packers draft class of 2019 and what to expect from them in their second year in Green and Gold:

Round 1: OLB Rashan Gary

Gary played in 24 percent of the Packers defensive snaps as the fourth OLB/Edge rusher on the roster last season behind Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Kyler Fackrell.

Gary made 21 total tackles including two sacks, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits and he recovered one fumble.

With Fackrell likely to depart in free agency, Gary will step up and assume his place on the depth chart. Expect Gary to play at least half of the Packers defensive plays next season and expect him to line up in different places on obvious passing downs to create mismatches against opponent’s blocking schemes.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will look for more ways to integrate Gary’s speed and skills into the defense as Gary gains experience playing as an OLB in the NFL.

Round 1: S Darnell Savage

Savage stepped in and started right away as a rookie. He played 14 games while missing two because of injuries. Savage made 55 total tackles, was credited with two forced fumbles, five passes defensed and intercepted two passes.

At the end of the season, Savage was selected to the NFL’s All-Rookie Team, a well-deserved honor.

The Packers will look for Savage to take the next step in his development. That means reading plays better and not committing himself and getting caught out of position as frequently as he did in his rookie season.

Savage has good speed and hits hard. He needs to stay healthy and learn to time his hits better which means knowing when to commit to make a tackle and when a fake or double move is being made against him.

If he takes those steps, he has a chance to be a quality starter in this league for years to come.

Round 2: G Elgton Jenkins

Elgton Jenkins was the second Packers pick in 2019 to make the NFL’s All-Rookie Team. Jenkins took over as the starter at left guard when Lane Taylor was hurt during Week 2 and started all the team’s remaining games.

Jenkins played very well as a rookie and did not allow a sack all season. His run blocking was very good as well, but he could improve a bit more in this area moving forward.

The Packers think Jenkins has Pro Bowl potential as he gains experience. He should take his game up a notch in 2020 and be the team’s starting left guard from the start of training camp.

Round 3: TE Jace Sternberger

Sternberger spent the first half of the season on the injured reserve before being activated on November 2. The Texas A&M product played in six regular season games and did not catch a pass. He showed good blocking skills which many scouts had questioned coming out of college.

In the playoffs, Sternberger caught three passes for 15 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

The Packers will likely give Sternberger a chance to win the starting tight end job next season unless they pick up a big-ticket free agent at the position.

Sternberger has showed flashes of ability but most show that consistently to earn the starting job next season. Expect him to have a much bigger role in the Green Bay offense next season.

Round 5: DL Kingsley Keke

Keke played in 14 games in a reserve role for the Packers and was credited with 10 total tackles and one quarterback hit. He showed flashes of pass rush ability during his limited regular season action and during the preseason.

The Packers hope Keke will get more playing time in 2020 and be a bigger part of the defensive line rotation. As a rookie, Keke played in only nine percent of the Packers defensive snaps. The Packers are hoping he can at least up that to somewhere between 25 and 40 percent next season.

The highest ceiling for Keke would be to win a starting job and play in more than half the team’s snaps.  

Round 6: CB Ka’Dar Hollman

Hollman had a strong preseason and made the team but was active for only four games as a rookie and played mostly on special teams. The Toledo product played only four snaps on defense in 2019.

Hollman plays an aggressive, physical style of pass coverage which Pettine likes. For Hollman, the next step would be becoming a part of the dime package and being active for all 16 games. He is also likely to continue to play on special teams units as well.

Hollman is not a lock to make the team and must show progress to return in 2020.

Round 6: RB Dexter Williams

The Notre Dame alum showed good rushing ability during the preseason but his inability to pick up blitzers and run accurate pass patterns kept him out of the lineup for most of his rookie season.

Williams played in four games and carried the ball five times for 11 yards. He was active for 10 offensive snaps and played on special teams when he was in the lineup.

If Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams remain healthy, it’s unlikely that Dexter Williams is anything more than the third string running back. He must improve his blitz pickup and route running in order to earn more playoff time in 2020. If the Packers draft a running back this year, Williams may be in a fight to make the roster.

Round 7: ILB Ty Summers

Summers made a lot of tackles during the preseason and earned a spot on the roster as a rookie. He played in all 16 games and was a big part of the Packers special teams coverage units making four total tackles.

Summers did not see any snaps on defense as a rookie. With Blake Martinez and BJ Goodson both expected to depart in free agency, Summers may have a chance to play a role on defense in his second season. Pending free agency, both starting positions may be up for grabs and Summers will compete for a job but is unlikely to enter training camp as the favorite to start.

The TCU alum needs to be a more consistent tackler on defense to assume a bigger role on defense in 2020. If he continues to shine on special teams, he should guarantee himself a roster spot.
