Schedule Breakdown: What will the Packers' 2023 record be?
By rex.sheild

If you ever need proof that NFL is king, look no further than the hype surrounding the annual schedule release broadcasted live on NFL Network Thursday night. What came about from said schedule release for the Green Bay Packers? Well, nothing new because Matt Schneidman of The Athletic leaked the team’s entire schedule Thursday morning. That saved me a lot of time, so I extend my gratitude to him. At any rate, the Green Bay Packers will open up the 2023 regular season, head coach Matt LaFleur’s fifth year at the helm and Jordan Love’s first year as QB1, against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field at 3:25 pm CST on FOX. Will Love begin the process of owning the Bears just like his predecessor owned them for almost two decades? The Packers will also close the regular season against the Bears.
No Aaron Rodgers, no problem in the eyes of the television networks as Green Bay will play five prime-time games – two at home and three on the road – throughout the 2023 season (pending any late-season flexes): Week 4 (09/28) at home against the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football; Week 5 (10/09) on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football; Week 13 (12/03) at home against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football; Week 14 (12/11) on the road against the New York Giants; and Week 17 (12/31) on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers will also play on Thanksgiving Day against the Lions, coming off a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, for the first time since the 2013 season. (Of note, the Packers play both games this season against Detroit on short weeks.) That season, the Packers got smoked like a turkey, 40-10. The last time the Packers played on Thanksgiving Day (2015) resulted in a deflating 17-13 loss to the Bears, the night that the franchise retired Brett Favre’s number.
As Schneidman pointed out, Green Bay will not play a 2022-23 playoff team until Week 8, when they host the Vikings. The Packers’ bye week is Week 6. Among the squad’s first six games, only two are at home.
Arguably Green Bay’s toughest stretch is from Week 7 until Week 14 as they play four teams that made the playoffs last year. I also expect the Broncos (Week 7), Rams (Week 9), and Steelers (Week 10) to be better in 2023 than they were in 2022.
Additional Nuggets
The Packers have the ninth-easiest strength of schedule based on their opponents’ 2022 win percentage (.476), and the easiest in the NFC North, according to NFL Research (h/t Andrew Siciliano).
Green Bay will travel 11,956 miles throughout the 2023 season, the second-least amount in the NFL, according to Bill Speros (h/t Adam Schefter).
The Packers will play every team in the NFC South in 2023, just like they did in 2020. That season, they went 3-1, with the lone loss being to Tom Brady & Co. in Week 6.
- While Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder saw action in only four games a season ago (73/115, 708 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs), 2023 will be his first full year as a starter. Expect the Falcons, who will host the Packers in Week 2 (12 pm CST, FOX) to lean heavily on the run throughout the upcoming season, though, especially against the Packers, with the duo of second-year back Tyler Allgeier and rookie Bijan Robinson.
- The Panthers, who will host Green Bay in Week 16 on Christmas Eve (12 pm CST, FOX), drafted QB Bryce Young with the first overall pick. The Alabama product will reportedly start training camp as QB2, but do not be surprised if he is under center when the two teams face off against each other. Speaking of Carolina’s offense, new head coach Frank Reich & Co. totally revamped that side of the ball as they traded away WR DJ Moore and signed WR DJ Chark, WR Adam Thielen, and RB Miles Sanders.
- QB Derek Carr and his team, the New Orleans Saints, will travel to Lambeau Field in Week 3 for the first time since Week 7 of the 2017 season. In the 26-17 loss that season, Aaron Jones carried the ball 17 times for 131 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Brett Hundley registered a 39.9 passer rating (12-of-25 for 87 yards and one interception).
- When the Tampa Bay and Green Bay meet in Week 15 at Lambeau Field, who will be the Bucs’ starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask? In two career games against Green Bay, Mayfield has completed 33 of 57 total passes (57.9%) for 333 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions, with a passer rating of 55.7.
The Packers will also play every team in the AFC West in 2023. The team did the same in 2019, going 3-1.
- The Packers will travel to play the Raiders and Davante Adams in Week 9 on Monday Night Football. Get your popcorn ready for the Jaire Alexander-Adams matchup. It is only the third time this century, and the first time in Las Vegas, Green Bay has played at the Raiders’ home stadium. The Packers are 2-0 in those games, including an emphatic 41-7 victory on December 22, 2003, one day after Brett Favre’s dad passed away. The Raiders, who finished 6-11 last season, are ushering in a new era at quarterback, with Jimmy Garoppolo under center. The team also signed WR Jakobi Myers in free agency.
- The Denver Broncos, the Packers’ Week 7 opponent, spent over $235 million in free agency, the most in the NFL. Head coach Sean Payton is the new sheriff in town after the team fired Nathaniel Hackett. Green Bay’s trip to Denver will be its first since the 2015 season.
- The Packers will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13 for only the third time in the last 20 years and the first time since 2015, a game in which the Packers won, 38-28. QB1 Jordan Love’s first-ever regular season start came against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium during the 2021 regular season, a 13-7 loss that prompted several people among the fan base to say that Love sucked and was an awful draft pick.
- The Chargers will travel to the Frozen Tundra in Week 11 for the first time since the 2015 season. The Chargers added another big-bodied weapon on the outside for QB Justin Herbert, drafting WR Quentin Johnston in the first round. That’s all fine and dandy, but that won’t help them stop the run. The team ranked 27th and 30th in 2022 and 2021, respectively, in terms of opponent rushing yards per game.
Green Bay will travel to Pittsburgh for the first time since 2017 to face off against the Steelers in Week 10.
LaFleur will greet his old boss, Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams, in Week 9 at Lambeau Field. It will be the fourth matchup between the two teams in the last three seasons (2020-21 Divisional Round, 2021 Week 12, and 2022 Week 15). The three prior matchups resulted in a victory for the good guys.
All four major sportsbooks have the team’s over/under win total at 7.5. Give me the over for a 10-7 record. What do you think the Packers’ record will be in 2023?

Very much appreciated summary Rex.
I'm taking the under, hoping to lose another bet.
I had'm at 14-3 this time last year, so don't pay me any attention.
Looking for a much more entertaining 7-10 season this year, reserving the right to make a change when final roster is in place.
Among the biggest year over year jumps that I want to see are for MLF and JB!

That seems about right. As weak as the NFC and NFC north is it wouldn’t surprise me if they are around 500 and compete for the North. I can see the winning team out of the North being 9-8 or even 8-9. There really isn’t any great QB in our division or for that matter in the NFC, except maybe Wilson and Stafford.

8-9. 3-3 in the division splitting with each team, wins over Atlanta, Vegas, Rams, Yucs, and Panthers.

With eyes of optimist, I say 17(20)-0.
Putting all together, I did not changed my opinion 7-10 to 11-6. It depends what other teams will look like. And I expect NFC North to be from 4-2 to 5-1. Packers will lose at least one game that they should win in the division.
In case of health issues during the season, I'm certain that Packers will be no worse that 7 wins.

Everyone forgets to include the preseason. It does have an impact on the regular season. Remember, Mr. Rodgers didn’t play and that affected the first few games.
So here I go . They lose all 3 preseason games and don’t give Love and his teammates enough time to gel. So they lose the first three games. They end the season at 5-12. Get the #6 pick and the Jets #18.

I agree with your prediction, I say maybe even worse. Packer MGT has handicapped this team for a couple of seasons. Horrible salary cap mgt. Hopefully we will have a new mgt team in place before the start of 2024 draft. Wake up Packers fans the front office mgt team has failed...

I realize this site has a lot of homers, and that's fine. What I don't understand is how knowledgeable football fans can think this team is a 10 or 11 win squad. Maybe those fans are just used to seeing the Packers have double digit win seasons and know nothing of the 70's, and 80's. For that to happen, they would have to hit on all the rookies that are going to have significant playing time, have no regression by the second year receivers, and have the unproven QB play better than league average. That's a tall order IMHO.

This is a squad with a lot of youth and perhaps unexposed potential within it’s coaching. I can see 10 or 11 wins, I can see 5 or 6. To be honest, the more important thing is how we play in getting there. Are we going to be as excited for 2024 but with more actual on field evidence to go on?

"What I don't understand is how knowledgeable football fans can think this team is a 10 or 11 win squad."
Everything about the league is set up to drive teams back to the mean, maximize fan interest, and maximize profits. Last month the team that drafted 8th overall--drafting in the top 10 is historically a sign of crappy teams--won almost half their games (7). The Packers won 8 and were in the playoff hunt until the second half of their last game...they were slotted 15th in the draft with only one win difference with the team slotted 8th. 17 teams won between 7-10 games in 2023. The odds say the Packers--who return most of their starters after getting mediocre play from its QB in 2022 (the key loss)--should be in that 7-10 range.
"Maybe those fans are just used to seeing the Packers have double digit win seasons and know nothing of the 70's, and 80's."
I lived through the Packers teams of the 70s and 80s when the league structure had minimal player movement, no cap, and teams really could only build through the draft. When management teams were retained for way longer than they should be, and a rebuild took crafty drafting and 5-8 years if everything broke right.
Team and roster management are nowhere near what they used to be, and most ownership groups have little patience for lengthy rebuilding plans. YES, some teams suffer continual mismanagement and languish for long periods even with changes in the front office, but even bad teams cycle into relevance every few years. People keep pointing to the 70s and 80s with dire warnings, but that league no longer exists and the comparison is only hyperbole and is no longer relevant.

You have shared a whole bunch of teams that are either not that good or weak QB's.
My key to success is to lean heavily on the running backs (both running and passing) mixed in with shot plays. And for heaven sakes against these weak teams play aggressive defense. If Alexander is not primarily defending the best receiver, our season is sunk.

Your comment and this bit from the article reminded me of this team's maddening tendency in 2022 to NOT stick with the run--or sometimes even TRY to run the football--in close games against teams that came into the game known to struggle to stop the run.
We'll see what happens in 2023.

At least 10-7
We'll win at least 4 of our division games, we'll sweep the NFC south for another 4 wins, and we''ll split with the NFC West. That's 10 wins right there. Put me down for 11 wins.

This team, AT THE MOMENT, isn't a broom to sweep any Division team or another Division, they're lucky to be considered a dustpan brush. However, until we see what their opponents begin the season with, the door for better is open. A 2-3 or worse start to the season makes a 7 win or better season nearer to improbable than possible. However, a 4-1 start won't guarantee a winning season either, as the treadmill gets turned up.

This is probably going to come as a big surprise to you and everybody else, but I don't things the same as you.
There is only one coach in this division who has ever won a playoff game, and that's LaFleur. The guy in Minnesota made the playoffs once. The guys in Detroit and Chicago haven't even managed that.
We return the best defense in the division, by quite a wide margin. Chicago, Detroit, and Minnesota were all pretty bad on defense, and they'd have to improve quite a bit to just improve to AVERAGE, which is our starting point this season.
AT THIS MOMENT, we have a healthy Bakhtiari, Jenkins, and Myers and we're not going to be put into a position where we've got Newman and Hanson lined up next to each other.
We have an exceptional backfield running behind this veteran line.
It's going to boil down to whether Love can throw strikes downfield to this batch of new receivers. I predict he can, and he will, and we won't see nearly as many of these back foot lobs down the sidelines and we'll see Love step up and and rifle some strikes.
If I'm correct, we're going to roll. If not, you can have the satisfaction of saying "I told you so".

I'm in that ballpark - 10-11 wins. I think we're going to be better on offense than we were last year, just by virtue of actually committing to the run game and Love throwing the ball to the open man. The should help the defense as well. These young players seem hungry and determined to prove the doubters wrong and I think they will do that very thing. Teams and the media are going to underestimate them all season and that's going to fuel the fire.

All you need to know is our OL is good...and healthy. Our WR room is packed with speed and potential. Our TE room now has speed and potential. The RB room has fresh blood and 1-true weapon and a couple bruisers. We have an All Pro returner and a QB who just needs to move the chains and not make mistakes and he won't have an issue throwing to ANY receiver...EVER. That's a massive improvement right there. Run game will be there, we will be running motion, sweeps, RB and WR screens and a couple active TE's. 11 wins or more. The defense got a bunch of pocket pushers in the draft. One or 2 will stick. Gary will be back. We don't need Love to throw tight coverage balls because we will finally have speed and separation at WR and TE. He just needs to work within the system and hit guys that are open. We will be better than you and most think. GPG

All I know is that the Pack is undefeated now. Too many unknowns for me to make any kind of prediction about the record without some assumptions and guesses.
It's optimism time, so let's say that the stars align and Love plays like a 1st rounder with three years' good coahing, then ten or even eleven wins and a wildcard berth could happen.
More likely-- team has its weak spots-- so realistically if Love turns in a merely decent season with middle of the pack stats and the receiver room plays as young as they are, then it seems reasonable that the record will be about .500 and missing the playoffs.

Jesus! Thousands of variables to consider here. Thus, rendering any of my predictions useless. An NFL season is dynamic and volatile with how such variables can change a teams stars for the better or the worse. As of right now? If our DC coaches up a mean and aggressive D and our HC doesn't keep ANY remnants of Aaron-Ball along with relatively good health of the players, I can see a 10-11 win season here. However, with the inevitable adversity that is built into most NFL teams whilst having a DC who I'm guessing (hopefully I'm way wrong) will stay passive, unwilling to change and derelict when it comes to in game adjustments, I see this as a 7-9 win season.
I tell ya what though. My level of excitement this year is like the Viagra for Packer Fandom.
You folks have a fantastic and blessed weekend.

My prediction is that Jordan Love misses at least 2 games because of injury. He seems fragile to me , maybe because of the shoulder injury in 2021 preseason game. He's also had at least one known concussion. I hope he stays healthy, but am guessing 7-10.

I have absolutely no idea what the win/lost record will be for the Packers this upcoming season. Love might turn out to be nothing special. The defense run by Joe Barry might be even worse than last season. Matt LaFleur might fail again at calling plays for the offense and might fail again at not getting rid of Joe Barry when the defense falls apart through the first half of the season.
I don't worry about the Packer players on the field. I worry about the Packer coaching.
It's always about coaching. But where do you find another Lombardi?

Whether MLF made good calls that were changed by his QB that failed, it is still MLF's failure. He put up with it all season.
We are going to see this season if MLF is the OC genius we all hope he will be.
As far as his HC abilities, I am expecting he will again concentrate on O. I do hope he at least gives Assist. HC Bisaccia oversight over Defense as well keeping STs helping vs hurting the team.
jlc1
May 13, 2023 at 03:11 pm
This is my take as well. MLF's seat is going to get warm this season. At the end he can toss Barry overboard (finally) to buy himself another year or two if he is not competing for the division this year. I can only hope that the FO brings in a DC who is ready to be the HC in '25 or '26.

I think these sportsbooks are selling the Packers short--they may surprise a lot of people. It's essential that our defense, unlike in years past, gets off to a good start (there's always hope, right?). One variable that we're totally unsure of right now is the kicker--we'll need him to be on the money if we're hoping for 10 wins, which is certainly in the realm of possibility. And for once we should see a meaningful preseason where the starters actually get some time to gel as a unit before the games count.

Explosive athlete with long frame. Fights continuously to create FFs/takeaways.

None of it matters, my friend! All in good fun.
I do like the vibe this year, and can’t wait to go up for that first practice open to the public. Get an in person sense of the energy this team exhibits.
I’ve seen so many different energies take that practice field over decades. Really interesting stuff, Since’61!
My All-Time Favorite camp energy was Jordy Nelson. That dude had fun with it, blazing around showing off his speed at every turn, every rep, whooping it up himself, laughing his ass off.
Our WR Room got LOADED this off-season. I cannot wait to see what all of these young players bring.
Had surgery last year Draft Day 1 and missed all the camp stuff. This year will be good.

gg that is the best way to see what is actually happening. See it in person without media interference creating their impression of the players for us. Nothing like watching the practices in person. Enjoy my friend.
I really enjoyed watching Jordy play. The Packers should have never let him go. He should have finished his career as a Packer. He deserved for that to happen. One of Gute's decisions that bothers me to this day.

I'm going with 9-8 and just missing the playoffs. There are so many questions about the offense AND the defense in spite of the relatively stable lineup of the defense. The only defensive starter who's not coming back is Adrian Amos. Yet the defense has been up and down for the past two years, and I'm expecting the same until they prove otherwise. Average offense plus average defense equals average record.

Before the schedule release I would've guessed 6-11 but the early season games sets them up to make friends with MO if Love plays competently right off the bat. My main question is a Barry led defense has never finished in the top half of the league in DVOA. If they somehow do maybe they win another two or three games.

I see the Packers at 6-11. Even though they have a soft schedule, the other NFC North teams have improved significantly except for maybe the Vikings. I see them at 2-4 in the North. I can see them going 4-7 through the remainder of the schedule. Some teams that could surprise are the Panthers and NO and the Broncos and the Steelers.
Of course it all hinges on how our QB1 has developed. GPG!!

7-10 at best. Pack top-12 #1 choice plus Jets #1 in '24. A strong draft in '24 & a year of experience for Love & WRs under their belts turn Pack around in '24 season. Wait for it! And if I'm way off, I'll be a very happy Packer fan while eating my crow!

No idea on their record, way too early. I just want to see this D ready to go from the start. They looked pathetic and unprepared against MIN in week 1 last year. I would give Barry maybe 6 or 7 games to show us that we have a formidable D. If not, then time for a change. GPG!

I'm thinking 25-0. But I might be wrong.

Seriously though, living halfway between Detroit and Chicago my main hope is that Jordan continues to own the North. After that if we can at least be in contention for the playoffs on the last day of the season I'll consider that a good first year for our next HOF QB.
