Report: Mike McCarthy's Brother Passes Away

The death of McCarthy's brother postponed the coach's season-ending press conference on Wednesday.

A bad week turned worse for Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, whose 47-year-old brother Joe McCarthy passed away on Wednesday morning, according to KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.

McCarthy is a Greenfield, Pa. native.

The Packers postponed McCarthy's season-ending press conference on Wednesday but declined to offer a reason at the time.

According to the report:

KDKA-TV has learned that 47-year-old Pine Township attorney Joe McCarthy passed away after collapsing at a local gym.

The medical examiner says McCarthy was taken to UPMC Passavant hospital in McCandless where he was pronounced dead this morning.

No funeral arrangements have yet been reported.

That sucks. Sorry for your loss, Mr. McCarthy. Tells one that a game is not that important.

Very sad. Too young at 47 and a tough break for his family. Best wishes to MM and the entire McCarthey clan.

Condolences to the family.

This is what I'm thinking, and I don't want it to be misconstrued as insensitive or anything. Because life and family are definitely bigger than the game.

But considering what happened with the Packers after the death of Michael Philbin, is in fact better for all of us that the Pack lost? If the team was trying to prepare for the Super Bowl after this, and they ended up losing to the Patriots (a strong possibility in any event, death or no), would that be worse for us fans than losing as they did in the championship game? Would that tragic team loss due to a tragic personal loss by Coach Mac (or not even really due to, but with the everlasting question if it was) be harder for us all, the team included, to take?

Was the loss to Seattle, in a weird, crazy, warped way, a blessing in retrospect? Not advocating one way or the other, just thinking out loud...

I don't disagree. I was at an event featuring John Kuhn and a couple of other Packers the night before that game. You could feel the depression. That team cared about Coach Philbin, and they were hurting with him. It made the loss the next day a little easier for me to take because you knew what those guys were going through. Having this pop up before the biggest game of the year would have been a lot for MM to deal with - probably too much.

BTW - I don't want to be too abrasive, but the RIP graphic, look, I know that you guys are doing this for free, but somehow that graphic just feels a little, I don't know, cheap to me. Like a Halloween decoration, and not something I would want put up referring to one of my family members.

DannyDS, I'm not looking for an argument here, but I disagree. I would say the Defensive line is on the Verge of being Very Good, but the Defensive Backfield is Mediocre at best. Williams & Shields are Average Players IMO, & both are Too Small, & both are overpaid. Williams days as a Starter, should be over. I like Casey Hay****, & Burnett seems to be the only guy that can Tackle. Then you have the problem at Inside Linebacker. CM3 did Great there, but by his own admission, he's out of position. Peppers probably won't be there, & if he is, can he have another Good, Not Great year. A.J. Hawk better be playing somewhere else, or they can fire the whole damn Coaching Staff, if they can't see it. I'll say it again, "They should have kept James Jones" We needed him. He would have made a difference. Look at the year he had at Oakland. It was a Mistake to let him go. I've said all along that our Defensive Line was Pretty Good, & CM3 & Peppers had a good year, but that's where it ends IMO. The Rest of this Defense has a long way to go.

I extend my Sympathy to the McCarthy Family. I think MM did a Great Job on the Offensive side of the ball, with a few Mistakes that can be brought up. I think he was Let Down by his Defensive Staff, & that means Capers AGAIN!!, & his ST Coach or coach's, NO PRO TEAM SHOULD EVER LOSE A GAME ON A FAKE FIELD GOAL!! That's High School stuff. Just my opinion. LVT
