Remembering the Greatest Moments In Tramon Williams' Packers Career

Packers cornerback Tramon Williams announced his retirement from football earlier this week. The announcement came on Williams’ 38th birthday and was made via social media.

Williams spent three tours of duty with the Packers totaling 10 seasons. His career journey went from undrafted free agent to Pro Bowl player and Super Bowl champion. When he is eligible, Williams is a lock to be inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame.

By the end of his career, Williams became a very respected veteran presence in the locker room. When the Packers re-signed him during the 2020 playoffs, head coach Matt LaFleur had this to say about the former Louisiana Tech star:

“It’s great to have him back in the building. Such a great veteran leader. He’s obviously played a lot of ball. It’s great to have him in a Green Bay Packers uniform, that’s for sure.”

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst released a statement after Williams announced his retirement, “We want to congratulate Tramon, a true pro, on a very successful career that was filled with individual achievements and incredible contributions to team success. He was a talented, humble and hard-working player who was a great teammate both on and off the field. We wish him, his wife, Shantrell, and their family all the best.”

Here is a look back at five of the most magical moments in Tramon Williams’ career with the Packers:

5. Williams Returns a Punt 94 Yards for a Touchdown, Week 11, 2007 vs Carolina

The game was scoreless midway through the first quarter when the Panthers tried a pooch punt designed to pin the Packers deep in their own territory.

Williams picked up the ball at the Green Bay six on a bounce and then started running to his right. He picked up a block and turned the corner before colliding with teammate Jason Hunter. Williams stumbled but kept his balance and ran the ball back 94 yards for his first career NFL touchdown.

The Packers took a 7-0 lead en route to a 31-17 victory over the Panthers. The victory improved the Packers record that season to 9-1.

4. Williams First Career Interception, Week 17, 2007 vs Detroit

The Packers were ahead 21-3 in a Week 17 game against the Lions when Williams made his first career NFL interception.

Green Bay had the lead but the Lions were driving and facing a 2nd and 6 on the Packers 19. Lions quarterback Jon Kitna dropped back and looked for Shaun McDonald in the right flat. Williams stepped in front of the pass and grabbed it for his first career pick. He returned it 22 yards to the Green Bay 37 before Kitna was able to bring him down.

It was a magic moment for the former free agent and helped the Packers win their 13th game of the year.

3. Williams’ First Career Pick Six, Week 9 2011 at San Diego

The Packers led the Chargers 14-7 late in the first quarter of this Week 9 matchup with the Chargers in San Diego. The Packers entered the game with a 7-0 record and were hoping to keep their perfect season intact.

The Chargers were moving the ball and reached their own 41 and were facing a third-and-four. Quarterback Phillip Rivers looked for Patrick Crayton near the first down maker but Tramon Williams jumped the route and ran it back 43 yards for a touchdown. It was the first pick-six of Williams’ career.

Williams finished the game with six tackles and two passes defended. The Packers held on for a 45-38 shootout victory.

2. Williams Game Saving Interception vs the Eagles, 2010 Wild Card Playoffs

The Packers postseason run to Super Bowl XLV began in the Wild Card round in Philadelphia. This was a tight game with the Packers clinging to a 21-16 lead in the closing seconds but Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was leading his team downfield for a potential winning drive.

The Eagles drive started on their own 34 and five plays later, Vick had the Eagles at the Green Bay 27 facing a 1st and 10 with 47 seconds left. Vick pump faked and looked for receiver Riley Cooper in the left side of the end zone. But Williams leaped up and grabbed the slightly underthrown ball. Williams got up and returned the interception nine yards before falling to the ground in celebration.

Aaron Rodgers took a knee on the next play and the game was over. With the win, the Packers advanced to the divisional playoffs and were prepared to meet the top seed in the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons.

1. Williams Pick Six vs the Falcons, 2010 Divisional Playoffs

After beating the Eagles, the 2010 Packers headed to Atlanta to face the NFC’s top seed, the Falcons, in the divisional playoff round. Even though Rodgers was enjoying one of his best career performances to date, the Packers and Falcons were matched in a close battle. The Packers broke a 14-14 tie when Rodgers hit James Jones on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left in the first half.

The Falcons got the ball back and tried to move the ball downfield and score before the intermission. Atlanta advanced aided by two pass interference calls, one against Williams and another against Sam Shields and reached the Green Bay 26 with 14 seconds left. The Falcons still had one timeout remaining and were trying to tie the score.

First, Clay Matthews broke though and sacked Ryan for a nine-yard loss back to the Green Bay 35. The Falcons called their last timeout with 10 seconds left in the half.

Ryan made a partial rollout and looked for wide receiver Roddy Williams in the flat. Williams stepped in front of the pass and raced down the right sideline 70 yards for a touchdown. Instead of a tie game or even a four-point Packers lead, Green Bay was ahead 28-14 at the half and had the momentum squarely in their corner. The Falcons were stunned.

The Packers received the second half kickoff and drove for another touchdown to take a 35-14 lead and the route was on. The Pack won the game 48-21 and advanced to the NFC Championship Game.

Williams clutch plays were keys to the Packers winning those two playoff games and advancing to Super Bowl XLV.

These are just some of the highlights from Tramon Williams exceptional career with the Green Bay Packers. For 10 plus seasons, he was a strong and steady force in the Green Bay secondary. We wish him well in the next chapter of his life.

You needed to include one more: the pass breakup at the end of the Super Bowl to bring the Trophy home. I remember Buck and Aikman were getting all excited thinking there was interference, but after taking a closer look, concluded that it was a clean play. Tramon got the job done when it mattered most.

Packer Nation will long remember Williams as one of its greats. Loved watching him play and hated the short period he was not in Green and Gold. Enjoy your retirement TWill! You have earned it.
