Putting Teams Away Earlier

All Gas and No Brakes Please

How often do you watch a Green Bay Packers game and hope you can sit back and enjoy a good win? Probably every single time you turn the game on right? Who doesn't want to kick back, have some game day hors d'oeuvres, a few choice beverages, and enjoy a stress-free victory? The last thing we want is to be panicking over each drive thinking we absolutely need to score on offense, or we need a huge stop on defense. We want to get out to a calming three-score lead and just enjoy ourselves to the finish line.

Well, that doesn't get to happen a lot. The Packers only holding a slim lead or perhaps being down by a score trying to get even, tends to ruin those chances of a relaxing game, and instead, we're at the edge of our seats stressing out. It's just the life of a football fan. I can probably count on only one hand, if it even takes the whole hand, how many times the Packers have consistently dominated the opposition most of the season in my lifetime. It's rare. But you like to have a few each season if you can when your team is dominating.  The Packers have had some dominating performances this season. But many of them have been fueled by first-half scoring and then kind of laying off in the second. Many felt the recent victory against Seattle was one of these.

This past Sunday, the Packers dominated the Seahawks. It was 20-3 in the Packers' favor to start the second half. The Seahawks only kicked another field goal halfway through the third to make it 20-6 before the Packers responded with a field goal of their own to make it 23-6. With Seattle's offense unable to get anything going, it appeared the game was pretty well in hand for the Packers. But given the Packers' own inability to get much moving on offense in the second half, it had many fans still biting their nails. Perhaps it was a form of PTSD given the way Seattle's Lumen Field has been a house of horrors for the Packers for the last decade and a half. Some feared with the Packers' conservative approach and inability to put up more points, history was going to repeat itself. Seattle then scored their first touchdown in the fourth quarter with the Packers offense unable to answer and those fears ramped up further until Edgerrin Cooper intercepted a Sam Howell pass and Jordan Love hit Romeo Doubs in the endzone to essentially seal the game.

Even though the Packers had the game well in hand for basically the entire duration, the lack of production in the second half made it hard to trust that the Seahawks didn't have a chance to come back. This is something the team needs to work on.

Don't Let Up

After the game on Sunday night, in Matt LaFleur's post-game presser, he even admitted fault. "It was lousy play-calling by me." It seemed like instead of attacking the way they did in the first half, the Packers had gone experimental. As if they had a good lead and instead of putting foot to throat on Seattle, they were trying new things to see if they would work. Instead of the straight-forward runs we saw in the first half, it seemed as if the Packers were trying a few new wrinkles out to see if they took. Well, they did not. Even if this wasn't the case, and Seattle was just doing a much better job of flowing to the ball carrier and stopping Josh Jacobs, why didn't they take advantage of that?

As Seattle's defense began to stifle Josh Jacobs in the second half, the thought in my head surfaced, so I decided to post it on Bluesky: "Seattle is sniffing out the run much better now. Time to just catch them sniffing with the play action and put a quick throw over their heads." It would've been the perfect time for Jordan Love to run the Tom Clements-taught guitar fake and then sail a few to Tucker Kraft or Romeo Doubs up the middle of the field to take advantage of the aggressive run defense at the time. But, yet, we never got any of that. Instead, the Packers offense was just walking off the field as quickly as they were walking on.

This falls on Matt LaFleur to not deviate from what works. If the defense can't stop something, keep at it, don't create wrinkles in it or try to get exotic, force it down their throats until they say "uncle." If they begin to stop it, then do the opposite. As I said, run play action passes over the run defense, or if they're stopping the inside run, start running tosses to the outside or screens to remove those interior run stoppers from the equation.

Matt LaFleur can be an aggressive head coach. He knows how to expose a defense to put points on the board early, but he lacks that killer instinct to "humiliate" a team and he gets too conservative. Packer fans know all too well from past experiences what happens when you get too conservative in important games and let your opponent come back. We can't let that happen. We need all gas and no brake until the final whistle.

The Lions were the gauge.
And Blow outs will only get your hopes up.
I'll take control first.
Otherwise it's beating around the Bush.
Winning is the only thing that matters.

That was quite a comeback by the Seahawks. They trailed by 17 at halftime, got within 10 in the fourth quarter, and lost by 17. Absolutely terrifying. In the Packers' five (yes, five) easy wins this season, I don't think the other team has even managed to get within one score in the fourth quarter.

Well, they did lose their QB just when it might have been getting interesting. Made me appreciate Willis even more.

I hope very much to see some more from him and Emmanuel Wilson on Monday in the second half while Love and Jacobs put their feet up. Then the O and D will have already done the job they should do against the current Saints. If we don’t, then we will really need to ask questions about tactical ability or motivational skills.

Geno Smith had led the Seahawks to 3 points in 3-1/2 quarters. What makes you think he was going to stage a big comeback?

The betting line for Saints vs. Packers is Packers by 14.5, which seems high to me considering that the Saints have a pretty good defense. What would you be satisfied with? 49-0, maybe? They were favored by 2.5 against the Seahawks and won by 17, which was clearly a disappointment to most CHTV commenters.

"lacks that killer instinct to "humiliate" a team and he gets too conservative"

Bingo. This is a team cultural problem on both sides of the ball for quite a while now. You can win and pump stats against teams that are not that good or at least not on par with the Packers talent during the regular season, but as we've seen come playoff time against the best teams, they've failed to make that next step. Even as the youngest team they have that ability. Coaches need to trust in their ability to put games over the top instead of wringing their hands over what mistakes might be made.

Like the playoff win over Dallas. We had them down and let them up and even threaten a comeback before finally putting them away. We should have kept our foot on the gas and crushed them when they were down and NEVER give them any hope of winning.

Uh, this article is way, way off base. After the second touchdown to put the Packers up 14-0, there wasn't a wavering moment the rest of the night. The defense dominated, the offense put up 30. When exactly were you worried, in the 4th when Sam Howell had the ball inside his own 20 down by 10?

And they are 5th in the league in net points. So they are "putting away" teams better than 27 other NFL teams, anyway.

I suppose it'd be fun to win 55-3 every game, but that's not how it works - there's a lot of good teams, parity, and strategy in the NFL. MLF isn't going to put a bunch of intricate passing plays on tape just to beat the shit out of Seattle more than they did - he's actually thinking about next week. He's running simple runs and basic pass plays; Seattle's defense got used to it and slowed down the Packers. They still got to 30.

You mean how we all felt in a certain prior game in Seattle? We did a great job of tripping over our own feet after getting the lead until Smith got injured. Then it was obviously over from the first few downs with his back up.

This from Mike Spofford:
"You have to look at why the Packers didn't put the Seahawks away earlier. Jacobs fumbled while stumbling through a big hole. Nothing wrong with that play call. Love missed an open Doubs on a play-action rollout right before the fumble. Should've been a 25-yard gain downfield but the throw wasn't on target. And Jayden Reed slipped on his route when he was going to be wide open on third-and-2, which preceded the fourth-and-2 stuff of Jacobs. LaFleur was absolutely trying to step on the Seahawks' throat. The Packers just didn't get the job done."

That's basically what LaFleur said on Monday.

My theory is it wasn't coaching, the players simply let up when Smith went out. It happens.

Lets not forget while spotlighting the Packers lack of scoring in the second half, that if you are playing another team with a decent head coach, he can and will make 2nd half adjustments to counter what the Packers are doing - the other side is paid too.

A counterpoint view to the Packers "letting their foot off the gas" is that the game-planning we have done on the opponent has found advantages to exploit before the game starts - and is effective until the other team finds a counter. The Packers also have the advantage of scripted plays early on, that the team has practiced.

Then there is the extra effort players can give.......but very few can give it all the time - that's why it is called extra effort. If the Packers give 110% early on, to get a good lead (sorry, you mathematicians out there), then you can understand them slipping back to normal effort later. Is it what you want to see - no - but it is very human thing.

For example, that huge hit our player lays on an opponent to set a tone early on, becomes just a solid hit later on, when the flow of the game is well established, with players mindful of staying healthy through the season - and particularly the playoffs.

TLDR There are a number of things that go into a less successful second half, but it is not as important as having a good first half and getting a good lead.........as long as you can keep the lead until the end.

The throw or the route? Looked to me like a receivers call that pressure forced Love to anticipate, not wait for the break. I’m not sure what Spofford saw before and between these events, but a few plays don’t really make the case for him going for the throat in that game just to be let down by the players. When was the last time LaFleur visibly went for the throat? That might speak to the chances Spofford’s theory holds water.

The play calling isn't the reason we're not scoring even more; it's the execution. In my experience, most plays will work if they are executed properly.

By the end of the first quarter, the Packers already had more points on the board than the Seahawks ended up with. That seems pretty early to me. Not like going up 27-0 in the second quarter, but still pretty good.

A lot of people, many, many people are saying they've seen Sam Howell walking around the Seahawks facilities looking humiliated, multiple cleat marks still visible on his flat throat as he rasps out "uncle" to anyone who gets within six feet of him. Just what I heard.

Mike Florio reported as of 2:30 pm Tuesday, alpha male and former Ravens stud DC, now Seahawks HC, Mike Macdonald was still looking confused, standing alone on the sidelines, staring up at the blank scoreboard at Lumen Field. At least he's tough with tough players who channel his toughness into tough 30-13 losses at home.

Lafleur has this inexplicable tendency to do the opposite of what he should. When he runs the ball with success, he completely abandons it for the pass and it usually doesn't work out. When the pass is working, he gets cute and tries what he did on Sunday. Where are the RPO's we ran with Love last year? We had plenty of success on them and one even resulted in a TD against the Saints. Instead, we see 4th and 1 shotgun runs behind Rasheed Walker (one of the worst run blockers in the entire league) and they routinely get stuffed for no gain or negative yards. Be aggressive Lafleur, Dan Campbell aims to embarrass his opponents, why shouldn't GB run up the score if they can?

That's true. He just largely failed to adjust to a stacked box and kept calling run plays between the tackles. However, it has been true on multiple occasions previously.

You don't run up the score because it's poor sportsmanship. I kind of thought everybody knew that.

If Lafleur does the opposite of what he should, then how does his team score so many points and win so many games?
