Packers WR Bo Melton Seeks to Build On a Surprising First NFL Season

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Bo Melton accomplished a lot in 2023. The former Rutgers star started the season on the Packers practice squad and finished it on the active roster. Not only did Melton play, but he made an impact when he did. This year, he continues to impress at OTAs and seeks to carve out a bigger role for himself in the Green Bay offense in 2024.

Melton was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He didn’t make the team but was stashed on the practice squad. The Packers added him to the active roster on December 27, 2022, although he did not play in a game that season.

Melton had many tools the Packers looked for in a receiver. He ran a 4.34-40 at the combine before the draft and was invited to the Senior Bowl.

The Packers welcomed Melton back to training camp in 2023 but let him go before the season. Again, he was stashed on the practice squad, but he was determined to prove he was capable of playing in the NFL.

Later in the season, Melton got his chance. He was activated for the Packers Thanksgiving Day win over the Lions and played two offensive snaps and six on special teams. Then, he was released again and re-signed to the practice squad.

But in the final four games of the regular season, when injuries struck the Packers receiving corps, Melton not only got a chance to play, but he proved he could be an effective receiver in the NFL.

In the Packers Week 17 win over the Vikings, he caught six passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. That made him the first player to gain 100 receiving yards for the 2023 Packers, a team that spread the ball around to a talented and young group of receivers.

He finished the season with 16 catches for 218 yards and one touchdown. He added a pair of catches for 26 yards in the team’s two playoff games and scored a touchdown against the 49ers in the Divisional Playoff round.

“It was a nice journey just to be from practice squad to playing, but my goal was never just to be a practice-squad player in general,” Melton said. “That’s never my mindset. I’m wanting to be a player in this league for a long time.”

Melton also discussed what helped inspire him while he was on the practice squad. “I’ve been around a lot of good players here that motivated me during the whole year when I wasn’t playing,” Melton explained. “When I started to play, it was nothing different. I know when you do good things, good is expected. At the end of the day, I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing. That’s been working since I was a kid.”

Melton made a strong impression on his teammates and the coaching staff in his limited action late last season. That has continued this year at OTAs.

“Bo is the same guy every day,” quarterback Jordan Love said when asked about Love. “You know what you’re going to get. Bo came in and he definitely wasn’t a starter last year, but he worked. Every day you’d see him on scout team making plays and getting a touchdown and celebrating, and he’s going to treat it like a game. That’s why it was no surprise when his number was called, he goes out there and makes plays.”

Head coach Matt LaFleur also continues to be impressed by Melton. “I think it’s a great story just being persistent and to continue to push forward even when maybe the stacks are kind of put up against you,” LaFleur said. “He’s done an outstanding job. He is so disciplined in his approach and how he is. He is so consistent on a daily basis, and he brings so much value. That’s what this league is all about. Some guys come in and make an immediate impact. Other guys have to continue to battle and show that resiliency that it takes and just continue to chop away. When given the opportunity, that’s when you like to see those guys go out there and perform, and he’s done that.”

One thing that Melton is looking forward to is facing his brother, Max, who was drafted in the second round this year by the Cardinals. They will face off in Week 6 when Arizona comes to Lambeau Field.

“When I saw Week 6, I’m like, alright, it’s going to be good,” Melton told reporters. “No more backyard anymore. Big stage. He’s going to be ready for it, and I’m definitely going to be ready for sure.”

Melton still has more to do to establish himself as a regular contributor in the Packers deep group of receivers. But don’t bet against him as he continues to work hard and keeps making plays.

Another guy that won't amount to hill of beans.
But if he makes the club. Good for him.
He better hang on to the ball!

Ok I'll bite. So why will he not pan out? He has just as good of chance of anyone as he is on the team. I would rather have a later round draft pick make it because he worked hard over a high draft pick that makes it because he was drafted high (Watson). No I ma not saying Watson will fail but he has done little. I hope they both do well.

1. Size- Height -Blocking.
2. Yes- he does have a chance.
Still -No elusiveness
3. No one will double team him.
Like Watson.
4. His game is speed only.
And if he fumbles - Bye.
I agree with your final words.

I agree he is shorter than our other WRs but that can be a benefit because he has a lower center of gravity so with his speed he will be able to run crisper routes faster than other WRs.

MLF states that he is one of the best run blockers. Yes I believe MLF more than I believe you. You do not have to be big to block you just have to have the right technique.

I look at Bo being that WR we need because he is not like the other WR. He provides a matchup problem for the defense.

As the saying goes - you can't train speed or size......... but you can train route running.

Sure - his career ceiling will depend on his willingness to apply himself.

Donald Driver (who also wore #80) was another raw athlete.

Never underestimate desire Stock - and now that his brother's in the league - don't underestimate that as a motivation.

When the knock on a WR is "no one will double team him", you know you're probably hearing the critique from a man who spent a few years proclaiming that Davante Adams wasn't a good WR because all of his yards were YAC.

I'm not making this up. He really dug his heels in and argued that Adams wasn't a good WR because all his yards were after the catch.

DA -wasn't a good wr his first couple years.
He dropped everything.
I stated throw at his left hand to get him going.
Why? Because he had trouble with his right.
But the fact was Rodgers did just that.
The confidence peaked.
But what really was noticeable.
Was his footing and quickness..
Thats when Adams was a threat.
I admitted I was wrong.
But in Truth, he was nothing like Jordy Nelson.
Adams earned every bit of his greatness.
And one of the best left handed WR, the Packers ever had.

we hear such from guys who fancy that they know how to evaluate talent. Fact is, most uber talented players don't make it, so its easy to pronounce any player will be a bust, and you probably get to brag about being a hard ass pragmatic. Keep tootin stockholder. We revere your prognostications.

Otherwise, you could just have said, his chances are still slim, but if he makes the club, and gets on the field, good for him. And yes, he better hang on the ball.

Seventh round pick that is doing well. Works hard, shows resilience, and makes the most of the opportunities that are provided. Yep, Donald Driver was really an excellent find for the Packers. But something else has to be recognized sooner or later. The development of the young WR's into good route runners who have a knack of getting open, this is not a coincidence. Hard work, definitely. But also a coach who seems to be able to communicate with these guys and elevate their game. His name is Jason Vrable, and the Packers recently promoted him, so they know his value.

Bo Melton is the perfect guy to use for T shirts etc, with a message like:

"You have a Jefferson, sure
BUT
We have Doubs, Wicks, Reed, Watson AND A MELTON"

or "Seahawks too slow, cause we have your Bo"

or "We can even beat you with a Melton."

I was puzzled and dissapointed when he did not make the team and was placed on the practice squad. Pack was lucky another team didn't grab him. But; better late than never. He will compete for a starting spot. We have great WR depth.

Some teams might have tried but with the expanded PS and more ability to protect a player we might have been able to protect him. Plus teams are unwilling to bring in new players especially WR and TEs because of the learning curve.

It's all sweet and such, these feel good stories about a PS player making good.

Don't sleep on Grant Dubose being a factor at WR for the GBP.

He red-shirted last year and absorbed a LOT while rehabbing and waiting for his chance.

Dubose is my dark horse candidate for WR impact in 2024.

Also, Alex McGough, AKA Mac GOON may spend a year on the PS and come out next year as the Heath replacement. You heard it here first...

Was just reading another article on Bo Melton, and LaFleur was quoted by Zach Kruse (packers wire) as saying this:

"You always try to find what guys can do, and what they do really well. And Bo's got an elite trait: he can run."

"Anytime you can add value in other areas... Bo is one of our best run blockers. He's not the biggest guy, but it's just the mentality he has, He's got that dog mentality whether it's run game or pass game. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get out on the field. He's embraced that, embraced his roll, and he's excelled in it."

I wanted GB to draft him, and was insanely jacked about Gutekunst stealing him off Seattle's PS. My draft notes on Bo:
--
Since 2020, Melton ranked #19 in Power 5 deep receptions (15), #2 in uncatchable targets (23). This really says it all. Taking out screens, his Catchable TGT Rate was 7th worst in Power 5 over 3 year span. His separation so good it was in 86th percentile.

He shows good understanding of how to run routes and set up defensive backs and has some spectacular plays in his tape. A 4.34 40 at the combine showed he has legit speed as well. Melton broke double-digit tackles in each of the last two seasons.
--
One of his greatest attributes coming into the NFL was his Missed Tackles Forced stat, which goes to Krause's last point. He's insanely versatile and effective/trusted enough to be a QB's best friend...

Loving the MLF quoted "dog mentality."

I distinctly remember how jazzed you were about Melton, and I distinctly remember yawning as a result. That said, once given a chance, he showed he has a genuine rapport with Jordan Love, and that goes a long way toward having a productive NFL career...so, yeah, I'm being proven to have missed the mark. Over the last 4 regular season games last fall, he averaged about 4 catches and 50 yards per game and a 66% catch rate. He played about 1/3 of his routes out of the slot, so his size doesn't preclude playing outside for those who have pegged him as a slot specialist.

There's a whole lotta potential in the WR room, and that's why I think that as injuries set in--as they always do--this offense should continue to be productive.

LOL. I don't blame you at all, dobs, for yawning... nor anyone else. It was the math that got me:

1.
In 2021 Melton had the 2nd most Uncatchable Targets in FBS (23). That showed how shitty his QB was at getting the ball to him.

Despite that, Bo Melton ranked #19 amongst Power 5 WRs in Deep Receptions with 15, and was voted Rutgers' Offensive MVP. Melton did everything there. Gos. Posts. Corners. Hitches/stops. Outs. Slants. Digs. Nows. Smokes. Bubble/hitch-now & tunnel screens.

Taking out screen passes, Melton's Uncatchable Target Rate was the 7th worst in Power 5 over the 3 years span of his career at Rutgers.

2.
WRAPS (a combination of WROPS [Catch% + YPR] and RAS)

The Green Bay Packers have 2 WRs on this 2024 roster who were in the Top 20 in WRAPS entering the 2022 NFL Draft: #1 Christian Watson (20.54), and #17 Bo Melton (16.39).

Watson's All-Time RAS was 9.96. Melton's was (9.22). Amongst those Top 20 WRs in WRAPS, Watson's RAS was also #1, and Melton's was #6.

THREE Packers WRs were near the top of one unique PFF Overall WR Ranking from the 2022 NFL Draft, which included 4 distinct categories (PFF Big Board/WROPS/RAS/WRAPS):
Watson #11
Doubs #16
Melton #23

What the numbers in this section reflect is what the WR was able to accomplish, while effectively removing much of the impact of QB play upon their raw statistics. Since Melton had such an inaccurate QB during his entire 3 year career at Rutgers, he essentially jettisoned from his #180 Big Board Ranking to #23...

I found that very interesting.

3.
Production: where talent intersects with opportunity.
This is another rather obscure listing from the 2022 NFL Draft WR Class, with only 27 WRs from that draft making this chart. The Packers have 4 of them on their current roster in Watson #7, Doubs at #19, Melton at #26 and Toure at #27.

The above listing combines a number of categories unique to a WRs Player Profile and their Opportunity Profile. Age, Dominator (best yardage + TD share season), Career receiving yards divided by routes run, Career Explosive Target %, and some other super geek shizzle...

The point is, this particular category is more a reflection of what a player COULD BE in an NFL offense from a productivity standpoint, if given ample opportunities.

Dobber.... dobber!..... Wake up....!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

4.
Missed Tackles Forced. For the love of God, I cannot find the chart I saw and used that year, but, Bo Melton was in the Top 7ish in the category.
--

To me, the math added up to Bo Melton, with a GOOD QB (????) being one hella steal. He is versatile AF too, along with carrying that "QB's Best Friend" quality to the extreme.

I'm a huge fan of #80 :)

Even so, I see his best role as direct substitute for #9. If Christian is just winded and not injured, putting Bo in makes sense. God forbid #9 has to miss a game, JL10 needs to maintain his connection with that speed, with someone other than #11 who's routes are usually pretty different. That's another way of saying that when #9 gets back on the field after injury, he's less effective partly because JL10 can't hit him in stride on the first try. Our QB also has to be able to hit targets who run 4.6x, and everywhere in between. It's a big ask!

Once we can reasonably expect #9 to play the whole season, Reed Watson Melton are a great "speed kills" combination. Until then I see Bo as having more value held in reserve. So many weapons! MLF drawing up plays should be like a kid on Christmas morning ...

Contrast this article to the recent signing of Justin Jefferson. Each player catches passes from the quarterback. Each can score touchdowns. One player has generational wealth to enjoy while the other enjoys the game without the need to be a star. I'll take Bo any time.

Great little article 👍🏼. What’s not to root for with all these WR’s? Injuries late and it’s like who the hell is this Melton dude? Going up and getting the ball, making plays and I’m like I didn’t know the other guy yet and now here’s Melton! What gold mine of WR’s they stock piled in two drafts 👍🏼
