Packers Vs. Redskins: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Redskins game without benefit of a re-watch.

...

if you're a cornerback, you don't want to be on the Packers - what a rash of injuries.

Packers finally got it right on 2nd quarter drive: 2nd and three, take your shot downfield. 3rd and three, just throw a short pass for the first down. Simple Football.

Taking a defensive time out to stop the clock on 2nd down with over three minutes left in the half? Someone explain football and clock management to our very successful coach.

Micah Hyde is a swiss army knife, but all the blades are dulled. Gets abused game after game.

I will not be re-watching the video of Goodson's video. Gruesome.

All the CB injuries have revealed one thing: the Packers safeties are not as good as advertised.

People seriously get angry at me because I'm not a Jeff Janis fan. The guy is "football clueless."

Smart to be throwing all these out routes against the wind on a windy day...

That roughing the passer penalty on Mike Daniels was just playing football, but in this NFL, you have to know they will call that.

Packers' two backup DL for the game were both tackles(Spriggs and Murphy). Naturally, a guard (Barclay) gets hurt.

I sure hope Quentin Rollins is hurting because his play has fallen off a cliff.

Pretty telling that the #Packers lone deep threat appears to be Jared Cook.

Clinton-Dix has been a decision-making disaster back there this year. Wrong read after wrong read after wrong read.

Hell of a gutsy call by Gruden going for it on fourth down in their own territory with 6 minutes left.

The ease with which Washington was able to get single coverage deep on the #Packers eliminates injuries as an excuse. That's getting out-coached.

Wait, we have a trade, GB's 1st round selection to NE for two 4th rounders, two 5th rounders, and a 7th rounder and TT fulfills his dream of making the Packers both the youngest team and the team with the fewest players who have ever been on another NFL roster.

Not this game. Mike coached a decent game. Ted T drafted a bunch of nobodys and they are showing their stuff which is nothing. You cannot win with zero pass D, it bites you in the ass all the time.

You don't watch very closely, do you? Perry had 4 solo tackles, including a very noticeable sack. He's one of the very few guys playing at a high level, and will get a big, multi-year contract from some team.

" He's one of the very few guys playing at a high level, and will get a big, multi-year contract from some team."

The Packers must have the lowest set 'high level play ' bar in the league to give Perry a big multi year deal.
Matthews comes back, and early in the game Perry gets a near ole from the right tackle then can't pass rush by a gnat afterward...why...because Matthews couldn't get pass a gnat either afterwards. You don't give big deals to 1/4 time pass rusher, especially an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

Packers played the Skins even up. The O did their job but again, as I professed for three years, this pass D is the Achilles heel and the Skins used it whenever they needed a big play.
I have them losing the next three on the road and they did two and next week in Philly. it dont get any easier.
Rogers and the doesn't have to put this on themselves this was another pass d loss. Ted, your draft and development aint working and it never did.

Packers defense is just not competitive. In the last 4 losses the Packers defense has allowed more points than Lombardi's defense allowed in entire 14 game seasons. Redskins were given 4 easy TDs.
After Packers take a 10-7 leads they give up a 3+ minute half ending drive. Then Daniels takes a stupid roughing the QB penalty to allow a Washington FG. Then everything fell apart and the Redskins just had to throw deep and they scored. Over 500 yards and 42 points allowed. Too many injuries, no depth and poor coaching allowing too many one on ones with no safety help for the corners. Lose like we're stuck with D. Capers until the end of the season. Defense is a complete mess. Thanks, Since '61

I love when people comapred 2 different type of games from 2 different eras. Long time ago, the stzar of the football team was RB, not QB nor WR. Running Back (Fullback!). At that tmes scores was like 12-9, 6-3 etc... Today's game are regulary over 25 points for winner at least! So, forget Lombardi, this is the new game now.
I'm frustrated as most of you, too. But I really can not understand why nobody, but nobody says 1 thing. When you ask to much from one position (like most of you expect from Packers safeties) the additional job might not be done to well, but you'll also see dropping in basic job performance (like Morgan Burnett was dear in the light for most season while he was playing with uncapable companion!). My God, Packers secondary playing with 3 and 4 CB and back up is 7 CB. Why? Because all others are injured (remember how many - they were considered to be the deepest position group on the Packers roster)... Yeah, you may realy ask why they are not performing well...

Croat - first find me an era in the history of the NFL when it was OK to allow nearly 40 points per game. I only bring up the comparison with Lombardi to show how bad the current Packers defense really is. As for the injury excuse, check out the injury reports for other teams in the league. The Packers problems are not just injuries. They are depth and coaching. The issue with depth has been going on for a while with this team.
2013 - TT left us without a backup QB and without any safeties.
2014 - TT left us without any TEs or ILBs
2015 - TT, NO TE's or ILBs again and no viable replacement for Jordy
2016 - TT leaves us without depth at RB, CB, and now ILB again.

There are other teams in the league with injuries that are not allowing 40 points and 500+ yards per game. Injuries are part of the game and need to be expected and planned for. Good planning requires preparing for the worst case scenario. We are currently beyond the worst case scenario and as a result our defense has not even been competitive, unless you consider allowing a TD on every possession to be competitive. Let's not forget that even when our defense is healthy the middle of the field is always wide open anyway so I am not sure that the injury excuse is viable, it may have something to do with our scheme and/or the quality of our players, starters or otherwise.
Injuries or not we are being out coached and out played, especially on defense. Thanks, Since '61

There are no "First Impressions" because the Packers have been leaving us with the same impression for weeks and weeks.

Here's a new one though, Janis is one of the biggest dumb asses I've seen in Kick Return duty. He can't catch, can't return, isn't even close to being the gunner he was a year ago. Why is he even on the roster anymore. Who cares if he's "Athletic", he's a liability who doesn't deserve a roster spot. Is he going to stick around for years and years for something he did in one game? Kinda like Thompson and McCarthy have by riding Rodgers coattails?

Sorry but I'm completely and utterly disgusted with this team. Injuries aside, they should still be somewhat competitive yet they've been destroyed, not just beaten. Time to start looking at the draft, lots of positions OF NEED on this team.

Problem is they have had to many key injuries to key players. Let's not forget we are still playing without our top 2 CBs. We are seeing that players can fill in short term. But there is a reason why guys like Hyde are backups. Over time they get exposed.

"lots of positions OF NEED"

Think about all the potential holes next year with the possible losses of Shields, Cook, Perry, Lang and Lacy. On offense - RB,OL,TE and possibly WR.
On defense - CB,ILB,OLB and DL.

Just about every position. Not enough draft choices to cover this even if you hit on them all.

The present sucks and the future doesn't look much brighter.

8-8
8-8
8-8
12-4 has helped too.GB could use a good draft. www.foxsports has a article about 7 reasons the Packers need rebuilding.
I and all of us knew this tme would come, GB has had long- term success and fans may have to face the reality of a down period and it's not like it blindsided anyone who seen it starting last season.

You need to stop with the injury excuses. --- Do you even research other teams' injuries issues? -- Some teams in the NFL are worse off than the Pack (by a long shot).

The Packer's problem is a "LACK OF DEPTH". --- Not injuries.

Not to go all Don Quixote here, but where do you suggest that TT find this depth you speak of? CBs aren't growing on trees, or windmills.

You can't waive a magic wand and create CBs and offensive linemen. There is a finite supply of those guys, unless you're Seattle and can take a former WKU Hilltopper star basketball player (George Fant) who hasn't played football since Pee Wee and turn him into a starting left tackle. Maybe they do grow on trees after all.

Very well said Al! The first guy wearing this disaster is TT. Whiffing over the years on pick after pick on defense since 2010. Ever since Collins got hurt in 2011 this defense has failed routinely in big moments to get the key stop they need to win a close ball game.

MM may be a successful coach but he makes some horrendus decisions when in crunch time and under the gun in close games and in the playoffs.

Im sorry but capers has to go after this yr as well i dont care how injured your team is you cant justify keeping your job after the playoff meltdowns coupled with what were seeing this season. I could go on but I will save you great readers the time.

Capers has to go. May not entirely be his fault with injuries and a GM who only brings in players from the draft. But he can't let the other team continue to beat them deep.

What is funny is Hawkins gets burned 1 time and hasn't seen the field since. How many times have the other CBs been burned, yet they still play.

"What is funny is Hawkins gets burned 1 time and hasn't seen the field since."

I asked my wife this same question last night as we watched Brice (and now we see why he went undrafted: he's a downhill safety who suffers in coverage) hurt himself on that goal-line tackle late. There's a reason why safeties are safeties and CBs are CBs: it usually comes down to awareness and cover skills. Give Hawkins a chance. At least he's played CB and can run.

I'm not saying he will be the savior, I just don't get why he hasn't played at all since giving up 1 long play, (In which he thought Jones stepped out of bounds).
I say give the guy a chance. He may surprise us. In the preseason he made interceptions. Something our CB's haven't done.

I've seen some of the worst defenses and worst single game performances ever under the Capers regime. Nice guy, works hard, maybe his schemes are sound on paper, but it just isn't working. Maybe it's too complicated for our personnel.

Jared Cook looks like what we thought he could be and also what we feared he might be. He can split out wide and get separation, and play inline. His fumble in not quite garbage time ended our chances and diminished his luster. He also dropped two passes, albeit in garbage time: still, I don't like to see it. When it counted, he was the bulk of the offense. [I missed the whole first half due to Folk Fair, but I just reviewed the play by play. Did Cook play in the first half?]

We should not expect Dix to be Nick Collins. Dix just doesn't have the speed and isn't the athlete that Collins was. Dix isn't going to range far over and actually help a CB defend a pass regularly. Dix can be a nice FS, not a great one. Burnett is just okay in coverage when he has a good year.

My guy, Carl Bradford, got to play, and the results were the same for him as they have been for nearly all practice squad guys who are forced to play: he wasn't ready, like Don Jackson wasn't ready. I have to say that Bradford looked bad. I have no idea what Practice Squad guys do but clearly they get zero reps.

Barclay had to play. 1 of his 2 penalties hurt. AR did not have a great pocket in the 2nd half, but the OL generally gave him adequate time.

In defense of Cook, Norman made a great play on the ball. There's a reason why he's one of the best CB in football, and it's not just that he can run and cover. That said, Cook has to be holding on to that football in that situation.

Our offense again started 3 and out three times in a row. So, all you saying is that our coaches are overcoached?
I do n ot see that way. I will say, until 4 Q, they were in the game with very good team for Victory with 3rd preseason game roster on the field. I say they did a hell of a job.
Now, you can say that they should prepare team better. OK. Tell me, what is your suggestion how to prepare Carl Bradford better? Or Jeff Janis? Or any of back up safety, CB? You can not play with 7 players & 4 rookies on D and expect to stop one of the most explosive offense. But Packers almost did...
Yes, I know woulda, coulda, shoulda...
Be reasonable...
I'm just sad that Packers did not win for Adam...

"... expect to stop one of the most explosive offense. But Packers almost did..."

Please. Almost? Except when it counted and then did we stink. Every single time we looked like we could do it Skins had a HUGE play. l was hopeful and shocked that we pinned them back inside 10 and actually were holding them back, we then let them get out if it somehow as usual. Winning teams do not let that happen. Injuries or no injuries. We do that all the time even when at full strength.

Finally a voice of reason amongst a plethora of cry babies... I'm going to go on a rant...

Everyone calling for heads to roll are what's the problem with our country. You need instant gratification now and if you don't get it you want someone to take a fall. You are no better than the lady that spilled hot coffee on herself and then turn around and sued McDonald's. We aren't entitled to a Superbowl every year and we've been to the playoffs 7 years in a row. Go try being a die hard Cleveland fan... those people are fans, you are just a group of fickle nay sayers with bloated expectations.

I work in Minnesota if I wanted to hear how the Packers suck I would turn around and talk to my coworkers. It would be nice to be able to come to this site and not hear the same crap that comes out of their mouths.

It's really easy to spit out a bunch of negativity but why don't any of you produce some substance... E.g. fire McCarthy, OK who is your succession plan? Lack of leadership... OK how are you making that assumption?

I'm not a homer, I recognize the team's deficiencies but I don't confuse intent with result. Grow up and handle some adversity with your favorite team, don't go on a childhood tantrum just because you don't like what is happening... let the dislikes flow on this one

It's very telling when our biggest deep threat is a TE.
Our D is one of the worst in the nfl. The quality is just not there. The defensive line is manhandled most of the time (yes we have an occasional sack but aside from that zip...) and it further exposes the problems we have in the backfield.
Since 2011 TT has missed badly on D. We have plenty of average/below average/poor players on that side of the ball. Not one good player let alone a difference maker.
The roster was badly overrated.
Time for a reset.

"It's very telling when our biggest deep threat is a TE."

There are several playoff-contending teams out there that can say that their top receiver is actually a TE. The Packers played one last night.

Aside from the patriots? ;)
Anyway it was not a "critique" of Jared Cook ot TE's for that matter: even before nelson got injured it was consensual that we needed speed at WR.
It's just that these past few years our drafts haven't solved many issues that we´ve been talking about. Especially on D!
Cheers mate!

Well I expected a loss by at least 2 TDs and I was right.

I get that many people want to use injuries as an excuse, and there certainly is always a reason that some players start while others are backups, but every team has injuries. What we are seeing is that some positions perceived as strengths are anything but. CB is the prime example (and don't get me wrong, I thought that was the deepest position of the roster before the season!). I get it, Shields and Randall are out, but Randall hasn't played well before his injury either. And I do understand that the young CBs can get beat physically or with speed by opposing receivers, but what I really cannot understand is how they don't even know who to cover most of the time - there always seems to be an opposing WR just running downfield completely open... Makes one wonder what they do in practice. To me, clearly a coaching issue. I never have been high on Joe Whitt, and I think it is time after the season to clean house, and start with coaches.

Also, Matthews and Peppers are clearly way beyond their prime. Peppers will be gone, but Matthews still has a big contract. He has to move back inside, as outside he cannot even beat a 3rd stringer anymore... People want to be critical of Perry, but he is one of the few playing hard and having some success...

Dropvante was back in full force...

Finally, if one thinks Cook is the savior of this team, then good luck with that - will make some plays, even big plays, but then also just drop a pass or fumble at the wrong time... Basically, a faster, bigger Finley...

To be fair Randall was very good the first game, after that he struggled.

The truth is the defense was hurt the most by the loss of Shields. He is our Josh Norman, Richard Sherman...

The WR's running open down the field simply is on the coaches. When your team gets beat more then 1 time deep, why are you still sending Safety blitzes leaving 1 on 1 coverage to players they can't cover? This was on Capers.

Mathews coming back from a hamstring injury, I didn't expect much more. You could see he didn't have his strength back in his legs.

Cook showed what the offense had been lacking. A presence at TE. Cook will make mistakes, but he has the speed and play making ability that the offense has been lacking. If McCarthy is still the coach next year they have to upgrade the TE position. He needs a play making TE. If I'm Thompson I strongly look at OJ Howard from Alabama. He would greatly improve the explosiveness in our offense.

Pick your poison: you can either turn your pass rush loose and try to rattle Cousins...who is no Russell Wilson back there. Or you can sit back in zones trying to keep the offense in front of you and hope that a minimum pass rush can get there before you get picked apart. I'd take my chances with the aggressive plan because at this point we've seen that the passive one hasn't been working.

I'm fine with the aggressiveness.

But IMO, they are better off sending a blitzer that is closer to the LOS then sending a safety from 10 yards off the ball.

Sending an ILB or even a CB would have been better IMO. IMO they needed to keep at least 2 safetys' deep as much as they were getting burned.

Agreed...if they're blitzing an ILB up the gut, you can hide that a little better and it forces a guy not known for being a runner (Cousins) off his spot and makes him create on the move. To be honest, I thought this was the ideal role for Bradford when he came into the game as he had a reputation for being able to get pressure on QBs in college.

I agree. I thought that would have been a really good role for Bradford. And Thomas has shown he can blitz the middle.

Sad day, thanks to TT. He does nothing but draft Corners and Wide Receivers. So what difference would it be if the Packers draft l st or last he will draft a receiver. Starks, Barclay , have to go. without a running game the offense is null and void. Packers have absolutely no speed. This team seems to be dead on their feet, and when they get behind they seem to be done. By way Croatpackerfan, I watch the Browns yesterday and I couldn't tell who was who after watching the Packers. GM Murphy has a decision to make...I hope he has the guts to get rid of TT and MM. Hey Mike you brag about your coaching ability and record...well you also had to Hall fame qbs Farve and Rodgers. only one way to go and that's up....I hope

I see the Packers finishing 7 and 9. They will lose to Philly, Seattle and Lions. They should be Chicago, Minn and maybe the Texan. I hope I'm wrong, b ut unless something drastically changes, that's my opinion. Thanks...HAPPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.

The two big turds in the toilet bowl, MM, TT and the smaller turds, Capers and the rest of the staff, except for James Campen, all need to be flushed.

Barclay and Janis need to go...tomorrow.

Find two CB's on the waiver wire if at all possible.

Trade Matthews during the off season.

Get Rodgers to restructure his contract to open up some money.

Sign a few quality Free Agents with that money for next season.

Try to sign Lacy and Perry to one year deals.

Don't re-sign Hyde.

Datone Jones needs to go.

Peppers needs to go.

Draft some damn speed in the secondary and MLB.

Have young Wolf take over as GM. As for head coach, I really have to be honest and say I have no idea, other than NFL experience, young and offensive minded.

Quick, post what you think is the current Packers salary cap situation. Don't look it up, you should know as an expert calling for AR's contract to be restructured.

$9 million in cap space. AR's salary until contract ends...

2017- Salary cap number: $20.65.

Cash value: $13.65
Base salary: $12.55 million
Roster bonus: $37,500 per game active, up to a total of $600,000
Workout bonus: $500,000

2018 - Salary cap number: $20.9 million.

Cash value: $20.9 million
Base salary: $19.8 million
Roster bonus: $37,500 per game active, up to a total of $600,000
Workout bonus: $500,000

2019 - Salary cap number: $21.1 million.

Cash value: $21.1 million
Base salary: $20 million
Roster bonus: $37,500 per game active, up to a total of $600,000
Workout bonus: $500,000

Work out a new contract. Reduce the base salary for the three years. Pro-rate any bonus to adjust current contract out 5 years. Adjustments are made all the time for cap space. If he won't do it, well he won't.

Oh and by the way, I am no expert on contracts. It was just a thought, since many other teams are able to do this, like NE for instance. I believe Brady has done it more than once.

I'm so sorry for having to look it up WKUPackFan. But I am almost 60 years old, so my memory isn't what it used to be.

Oh and I also apologize for posting an opinion here. When I joined this forum a few months ago I didn't know the prerequisite for posting was to know everything like you do.

Yes, players often rework their deals, but it's almost always for more guaranteed money (even if it sometimes seems that the value of the contract goes down, the player is more sure of his take) which makes the club even MORE obligated to that player and his contract and leaves the team more susceptible to cap hell due to significant injury and/or a decline in level of play.

The question is: what is #12's guaranteed money and signing bonus proration over those years? That's the true value of the contract to the club at this point. No player is going to agree to tear up a contract for less guaranteed money and less net value unless they're just going to flat-out get cut otherwise. #12 knows there's no danger of that.

What is really bothering about this team, is the lack of basics they don't seem to know how to tackle by wrapping up. Injuries are part of the game, next guy up has to perform. Joe Thomas looks terrible as a regular inside LB see why he is normally just in pass coverage. Both MM and TT need to move on take Capers with them. Week to week you don't know who is going to step up D Adams sorry not a fan, give his reps to Allison Jordy Nelson has not returned yet too early to turn his page. Cook looked like guy we hoped were getting but who knows, Starks tries really hard but is a 3rd down back. Tall order ahead I will still tune in as most of my life 58 years I have seen some worse from GB. Too many injuries time to look at strength and conditioning coach.

Until they can't mathematically make the playoffs, I'm going to believe they can.

Enjoy the ride, even when it has some major bumps. Things change very quickly in football.

Yup, this secondary sucks right now, for sure. Still some football left though and Packers still have to play both teams that they need to beat for the NFC north.

Anything can happen. They can lose a bunch more games or they can get on a streak. We will see.
